Lovely
This app is a great alternative to doomscrolling, and has helped me read a lot more
Better Than Instapaper – Not
Hi folks, I can’t recommend this app. Downloaded it got a very slick email from the CEO extolling its wonderful virtues. Then a very clever way to upgrade a pro trial. Well, their trial didn’t work so well. And Matter didn’t perform any better than Instapaper frequently coming up with a pathetic excuse that it couldn’t scrape articles from Apple News. Overpriced and Underperformed.
Ability to add more than one email for email news letters.
The app is great, highly functional does everything it promises. My favorite features are ai summary of an entire page, audio book feature where you can listen to the content rather than reading, article recommendations based on saved articles, learning with Ai flashcard style. My only misgivings are the fact that you can only add one email address for your email newsletters. Also organizing is rather limited. There should be the option of saving links or articles in different folders, tagging within said folders. Currently the only organizational option is tags. Not enough
Okay app let down by unresponsive support
No way to opt out of subscription auto-renewal (when not subscribed via the App Store). Unresponsive support to both genuine feedback and cancellation requests. Better apps out there. Avoid
Not worth $60+ per year
This app without a doubt has the best vocalization capabilities, but it’s pretty poor in terms of enabling you to identify sources within or through the app
Essential
I’m a longtime read-later app user, from Feedly to Reeder to Instapaper and beyond. I’ve been using matter since it launched a few years ago, and it’s surpassed them all. I love its ability to redirect newletters so my mailbox stays clean. It allows me to save, favorite, and highlight my favorite articles and newsletters. Its AI “readers” are the most natural and “listenable” I’ve experienced. It provides a beautiful reading experience. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Beware Predatory Subscription Tactics
App is okay, however, upon opening it, I was confronted with a subscription offer that promised a trial. Unfortunately, I did not receive a trial, and $14.99 was deducted from my account. Within 5 minutes, I attempted to request a refund from Apple, I was informed that it was not eligible. I cannot endorse any application that conducts business in this manner. I advise you to avoid it, as there are numerous reputable RSS readers available.
Pretty good, missing a few things
A widget for unread articles would be a game changer, or the option to buy once. I just can’t justify paying monthly.
Buggy and shuts down, stick with a competitor
Great design and nice audio voices but it repeatedly shuts down as an app for no reason. I’ve done all the trouble shooting several times and it hasn’t improved. Customer support has not been very helpful; just repeating the same “have you tried this?” and also asking for screenshots of the issue which isn’t going to help diagnosing it further realistically. I can’t be the only person with this issue, so overall a disappointment and I will return to a competitor.
Great concept, mediocre execution
I love the concept of the app, but it falls far short of being your go-to reading app. It’s very difficult to get PDFs or text emails into the app. Sometimes the emails are in your queue quickly, and sometimes they don’t show up at all. The browser extension sometimes pulls in the article, and sometimes it only creates a browser link, which is no better than a bookmark. You can supposedly add content via the iOS share menu, but it’s very limited in what can really be shared to it. I’m a paying “pro” user, but there is no response to support questions. They don’t seem to be updating the app.
Simple, powerful, reading queue
Matter comes to fill the gap after Pocket closed down, and I love its simplicity and useful features. Finding things to read in the discover or related articles section is nice. You can also add newsletters or rss feeds. Adding things to read later is simple as using the share sheet anywhere on iOS or via browser extensions for other devices. With premium you get a natural sounding voice reader, article summaries, highlights, search and no limits on the archive. I like sending links from google news or social sites to fill the download queue for stuff to read later.
Tried matter, but the app is a waste of time.
It downloads most webpages fine, but the way it formats them is sometimes obnoxious and counterintuitive. I looked past it because they claim in multiple places the app can download PDFs and easily convert them for reading with all the features they advertise. I tried 4 PDFs and only one worked. I tried going premium (used the free trial) and same problem. I emailed their feedback email asking for help and got nothing. I emailed their support email, got nothing. I emailed their CEO, who emails you when you sign up saying to reach out to him with concerns. Did I get a response? Nope. It’s been a week. Don’t waste your time.
Does the job
Solid and customizable reader, appreciate the Discover tab and being able to follow writers/publications. Support for any and all RSS feeds so I don’t have to rely on newsletter workarounds would be appreciated.
Can use with only one device
I tried to get it in mt phone. But my email confirmation never arrives. I wrote the company - check spam/junk, which I of course had done. No other help available I gave up and deleted it. After several emails back and forth, they never did anything with the information I gave them April Update I thought I’d give them another chance. Still no email confirmation received
Good App, Bad Support
I like what this app has to offer, but I don’t have anything nice to say about the support. I’ve opened multiple tickets with the support team via the Slack channel available via the app and I’ve heard nothing in weeks.
Best way to convert content to audio
Great product that allows me to save news articles from multiple sources, and provide text to voice playback from a saved queue. Saving works great with paywalled articles, but the caveat is that if you are on ios, the paywalled article must be brought up in Safari to allow the full article to have text to voice playback. For desktop systems, the Chrome extension works with paywalled articles.
Used to Love…
I used this app to aggregate articles into a single file to send to my Kindle. Other apps allow single article send and it is very messy. I was enjoying the app; then the update happened. I lost the ability to do the only thing I used the app for. I contacted the company several times but never received a reply. I have Readwise, which is incredibly responsive. Rating a 1 because I couldn’t get help and paid in advance for a year.
Great but some problem
Great UI and stuff but the transcripts don’t work for YouTube videos as well and YouTube videos don’t play the background???
sometimes it works
maybe it will save an article, but don't rely on it to do so
Let down by unresponsive Customer Support (update)
They finally responded. It seems you need to write a bad review for the to pay attention which is a shame. New version is nice, and Matter is probably still the best app to organize your reading, but some key features have gone for no good reason (they confirmed it). A good example is the ability for bulk delete both in your inbox and archive. It seems they assumed people don’t mind accumulating documents, but for many it’s key to keep their archives organized. Hope it comes back. Original review: The app is good, but despite being a paying and loyal customer and their claims of being user oriented, they never answer when you contact them. Good luck if you need support.
Better than Readwise
For my use case (listening to articles), this is so much better than readwise reader. Rarely it gets messed up on the TTS.
Used to be great
I used to use this app all the time. Now, despite paying for a subscription, the app doesn’t recognize I’ve paid. This feels like fraud.
Love the content but…
Hello, I love the articles recommended to me but often you continue to recommend articles that I have already read.
Desperate
App nags you with full page subscription sheet every time it’s opened. Kinda desperate
Good experience but…
Overall it does a good work but search needs work urgently
Best read later app
I’ve tried several different apps but Matter is the prettiest and best interface. I just always go back to Matter.
Not a good fit for my workflow or my life
I am not a particular fan of read-it-later apps for general reading. I do have a need for apps that assist with researching or keeping up with topics of varying scope. I want to easily extract information with an eye to acting on it. This app is not notably better than its competitors, Pocket and Instapaper, which were much earlier to market, and a bit less modern. All of them are frustrating to me. All they do is act as an extra inbox, and they do not make me more productive. They all alter and filter the contents of web pages, and often cut essential information like the authors of articles. Then there are other, more widely applicable issues: First, the price: $60/year, and it’s going up in 2024. I think it’s very expensive for what you get. Then the interface, which I find unpleasant. Each entry takes up a lot of room both horizontally and vertically. It seems thick, somehow. Finally, there’s the curation, which is unimpressive.
Pretty solid with a few frustrations
I’m a few months in now, and this app has become part of my daily routine. There are a few things that could be improved to make it perfect: (1) RSS limitations: with a standard like RSS, I don’t understand why so many legitimate feeds are not recognized (2) sometimes I’m afraid to open an article because I don’t want to be flooded with “since you read…” the next day (3) the reading minutes meter seems to not go away unless you uninstall and reinstall—I just don’t want to see this at all. I’m hoping more updates are coming—haven’t seen any updates in a while.
Disappointed
I’m a long-time Pocket user, but that product has really fallen off (GUI, reliability, voices, etc) so I’m looking for a new tool that’s similar to what Pocket used to be. I tried Matter, but wasn’t super impressed. The GUI is good, but no better than Instapaper (free). The summarization sounded promising, but didn’t work very well. The idea of managing my RSS feeds sounded great, but Matter couldn’t process half of the feeds I tried to set up. The product has potential but seems half-baked on the advanced functionality that I would actually pay for. So I guess I’ll use Instapaper for now.
Women authors
Pretty good app. The content is very much lacking. I’m a big proponent of female authors and for whatever reason content from female authors is completely lacking. I’ve “followed” and “favorited” female authors but the content is so narrow that I consistently am not provided with any articles from them. Most of the days out of the week there’s just no options. I’ve falling back to simply finding my own content for which there’s no reason for me to pay for this service anymore.
love it
makes it realy easy and intuitive to have all my newsletters in one spot. reduces clutter and actually makes me wanna read them
I’ve lost all my data after update
Will never use it again. My reading list disappeared after update.
Great read later app with a UI that’s actually nice
Been using Matter for a couple months now, switched over from Pocket and I’m loving it! The feed is clean and the keyboard shortcuts for highlighting and notes are super convenient. I’ve especially enjoyed the ability to listen to my articles and cleanly save video and text in one queue. I’d really like the newsletters feature to work better for me. I got it all hooked up with email forwarding, and I can see them come in on the desktop version, but I do most of my reading on my phone, where I cannot find the Inbox. Hoping that this can be added to a menu in the future.
Initial Experiences with Matter (Subscriber version)
Based on matters reviews and features especially the sync to notes apps , I took the plunge of switching from raindrop.io to matter. However, my initial experiences with the app makes me rethink whether this decision was right. Here are the few disappointing aspects of the app which the developer should address right away - (1) Twitter threads - Matter claims to convert twitter threads to single page readable content. However, to my surprise every twitter thread that I saved was redirecting me to the website for viewing which defeats the purpose. And unlike raindrop.io you cannot highlight web content unless the text is parsed in reader mode. (This issue was shared in the in-app feedback option) (2) Incomplete Reader mode - Unfortunately, the matter claims to have strong parsing capabilities to convert into reader mode. However, the most basic websites were completely only partially converted into reader mode and again I had to go to the website to read the content. Once again defeating the purpose of a read it later app. This in my opinion is the most fatal issue in matter which needs to be addressed right away. (This issue was shared in the in-app feedback option - along with the link of the websites which were being partially parsed) (3) Highlight bug - The inbuilt highlight which claims to be intuitive is actually buggy. To illustrate, while you select text it automatically enables highlighter which highlights the content. But as soon as you scroll it’s gone. The workaround as of now that I could figure out was to actually select a word to enable the selector option which then gives options (copy , highlight etc.) and then highlight content. Once again defeating the purpose of a fluid highlighting feature. So far my initial experiences with matter have been very disappointing. For a steep subscription pricing in India, these elementary issues and bugs shouldn’t have arisen.
Nice start but repeats over time
Gave up another subscription newsletter organizer that I liked better, because of the curated content Matter offers. Quite enjoyed the material to start with but several months in most of the content is on repeat. There are days without a single article I haven’t seen before (other than my newsletter inbox). At this price point and based on what is being advertised, I would have expected more.
Beautiful and useful app
I enjoy it so much.
Description is a lie
“Matter offers a free service and a paid service.” No, only a paid service.
Version 2.14.8 won’t save articles
Love the app, happy to subscribe, but the share sheet in the latest version seems to have a bug. The sharing/tagging dialog doesn’t show properly, and my queue is not updating. Can you fix please?
I used it ‘Out of the Gate - V1.0’, but…
.. the ‘Subscription Scourge’ has ‘Scuppered’ it, for me. Plus, one of the best features was ‘Binned’. The ability to post/repost Articles, and add your Own Comments to them was - Brilliant! It was taken away, with a small paragraph to say ‘We think otherwise!’. This was the Big thing I didn’t like. I’d started to repost quite a lot of stuff and built up a following (which as a ‘New’ Writer/Author was a huge deal), once this went, it kind of became ‘irrelevant’ to me. Then, chuck in the ‘overpriced’ Subscription, end of interest. Developers need support ☑ 100% ‘Boutique’ Subscription Pricing’ (where all the ‘Big’ & famous apps who believe they are ‘trendy & hip’ decide they are going to ask/demand unrealistic & expensive prices: because! After all, trendy folks (Customers) want to be seen using the most trendy and expensive apps to show off to their friends and online followers!) Well, there’s my thoughts, anyway. As you can tell, subscriptions, to my mind, have reached ‘Exhaustion’, completely & utterly. Folks can’t sustain them any longer. the average person, paying subscriptions for all the apps they use in their workflows and entertainment flows would be utterly broke and unable to pay all of their bills (on average). All the developers are achieving is to alienate customers (away from their apps), ensuring their user base is far inferior to that which it could be, and, if they are honest with themselves, over valuing their product. No subscriptions, One-time pricing, and realism will see them in a far more equitable position.
Transcription used to work
This app is dead. Developers are no longer updating the app as frequently. The transcription service no longer works. When you email them, they just tell you that they would look into it. Go find another app
"Double-tap is back"
Devs responded in a timely manner to a complaint I had, so I felt listened to and encouraged by their continuous work to improve the app. Much appreciated!
False
The 7 day trial doesn’t let you do anything but watch the preloaded video, so you can’t truly see what the app really does. So don’t even offer the trial. Disappointed.
Subscription exhaustion
I realise developers need to get something back for all the work they’ve put in developing apps. But we’ve come to a point where you can’t even breath, without having to pay a monthly fee (figuratively). And for me going forward I’ve made the decision to only buy apps that use a one-off payment and maybe an x-year upgrade to a new version. So for this reason i’m out.
Locking features
I was a huge fan of this app, but very disappointed to see that they have decided to lock all features behind a subscription paywall (a vastly expensive one for what the app offers). I understand moving to a paid model, but removing basic features like managing your subscriptions makes it pointless unless you pay. As a service I always think you have to be very careful of removing features, adding a paid functionality for new features is a much better approach - otherwise you just upset your pre-existing user base. Disappointing that I’ll be moving to a different app.
Same old stuff
Been using this for several months and am getting the same assortment of articles . Mostly directed to business people. I am a retired educator with many interests but none of them are business. Digging through my history and queue I can find something worthwhile. It would be great to have these upfront and daily instead of stuff for the corporate bros.
Best reading app for iPhones
Matter has everything a reader could want. You can select any article and file it to read later. The app also gives you useful reading suggestions based on your previous usage.
Garbage
Cheap developers, bad design, trying to milk the crowd using subscriptions. Waste of time.
Great app but needs iPad mini improvements
Good app and has the best text to speech functionality, pen support and highlighting features of all similar apps but this needs better page formatting, button scaling and landscape scaling improvements for using the entire screen to read on the iPad mini 6. These are all better on Instapaper, pocket and UpNext.
2 stars for locking a feature behind premium
Originally added a site to subscription when first installing the app. Now it seems this feature has become premium and means I can no longer manage subscriptions. This has had the knock on effect of meaning you are also unable to remove any existing subscriptions and are stuck with whatever was already added previously.
There is no free plan
After the 7-day free trial the options are: $79.99/year $14.99/month It’s a pretty ok app, but I don’t like the lack of transparency or documentation.
