The best feed reader app out there, and one of the best iOS apps period.

This app is such a joy to use and embodies and even elevates the elegance and best practices of iOS itself. The clear organization, feature set, interface that gets out of your way, and beautiful typography make reading effortless and satisfying. Thank you for this gem!!

Not recommended

Some bugs like being unable to add some feeds remained unsolved, and emailing the developer didn't get any response (already three months). For subscription I don't expect new features delivered but the reliability of the basic functionality with communication to users, if they face issues. Understanding the only developer is busy but when you launch an app with a subscription plan you should evaluate whether you can handle the enormous workload for both developing and maintaining apps.

So disappointing

I originally bought the original Reeder in 2010 and have used it as my only RSS reader ever since. It seemed to have stopped working today and won’t reload, so I started exploring and found this new version. I moved all my feeds over, but it just doesn’t work the way I want it to. I’m constantly seeing things I’ve already read, and I don’t want to see them anymore. I can’t tell if I’ve read something or not. I keep rereading things, which is a waste of my time. How can I make it work correctly?

Had to abandon after years

I couldn’t use the new version. I sent multiple requests to support for assistance and never received a reply back so just gave up. After years of using the older reeder I wanted to use this new one and I can’t even see a way to simply pull the feed and show one line per entry. I always get a preview despite searching for a way to turn it off. Some feeds I’ve used it says it can’t find when putting the entry to pull it despite other feed apps finding it just fine. I’m so used to using this so having to give up on it is disappointing but I wish the developer well and hope others can figure it out.

Loss of third party feed support

I have used and paid for Reeder for various versions and upgrades, and is one of the best reading experiences, hands down, on iPad and the Mac. However, the removal of any third-party feed service has killed this app for me. I tried to move feeds over and then stopped - just wasn’t worth my time when other readers exist, and I’d lose web view functionality if i did it. You should know going into this that that support that existed in prior versions was dropped for this rebirth version, and it wasn’t clear that it’s iCloud only. I don’t want to move all my feeds from feedbin etc. Into an iCloud-only sync app, limiting where I can view those feeds and on what devices. A shame this happened, maybe understandable to simplify support, but further closes an open standard into a closed one. So long old friend.

It’s really strange to not support dark mode while reading. It only impacts the article view and menus. If all you want is a timeline of intermingled feeds

Originally Reeder allowed each feed to be viewed independently. I prefer that approach because I like scanning articles within a context rather than the firehose of everything all at once. Over time Reeder has shifted to a preference of the timeline view of intermingled feeds. But I could always find a way to view each feed’s timeline in isolation. Recently that has been taken away and there is only the combined feed timeline. Not for me. I’m switching to NetNewsWire. Choices are good and I’m glad we have them.

The rapid improvements after launch seem to have been stopped dead by implementing liquid glass and working on other apps, which is a shame. I’m a fan of MELA so got Reeder on the basis that this should be great. It’s good, but not great. I worry that it has not been updated in a while, seeing it is a relatively new app. And the Filter feature could be better implemented - eg, it would be really useful to be able to filter on a particular feed AND on a particular keyword, but I can’t find a way to do this. Perhaps I’m missing something, but then the Help section is very basic and no real help at all. A terrific app inside there somewhere crying to get out!

A novel take on RSS

Reeder is amazing. I loved the original version, and I think I love the new one even more. The app takes some getting used to for RSS users used to typical unread counts, but once you do, it just feels normal. Like scrolling social media. There’s no pressure to finish — just a little number telling you how many articles there are left until you’re caught up. (And if you don’t want that, you can disable it.) The iCloud Sync is bulletproof. You can stop scrolling on your Mac, take your iPhone out, and it’ll keep you right where you left off. Truly a brilliant app and worth every penny.

Stubborn design masquerading as taste

I dislike almost everything about this app. The good first, because there is very little of it. The article view itself looks good. Once you are actually reading an article, the typography and layout are fine. Unfortunately, even here there is friction. The animation that slides each article into view is slow and there is no option to disable it. Now the bad, which is most of the app. The article list is actively hostile to efficient reading. Rows are comically tall, with no way to reduce their height. I only want to see headlines. I do not need a preview of the article text. I do not need images. I do not need avatars on every single row. The headline font in the list is also too small, which is baffling given how much vertical space is being wasted. If you want to show context, a single avatar or indicator at the top showing which feed or tag I am currently reading would be sufficient. Repeating visual noise on every row adds nothing. Keyboard navigation is shockingly bad for an RSS reader. There is no clear “Next Unread” command, and if it exists, it is not configurable. Instead, there are only “Newer Item” and “Older Item,” which is not the same thing. Worse, these commands do not move across tags or folders, which completely breaks any sane unread workflow. There is also no way to mark all articles in a tag as unread. That is a basic operation for anyone who actually uses RSS seriously. The result is an app that seems designed for people who want to admire UI chrome rather than read efficiently. I genuinely do not understand how anyone uses this day to day. It is pretty in places, ugly in others, and functionally frustrating almost everywhere. I will be sticking with Vienna, buggy as it is, or possibly NetNewsWire. The latter has some of the same shortcomings, but at least the developer appears more willing to engage with feedback and consider changes.

Feels Half-Baked, Missing Features

As a long time Reeder user I figured it was time to download Reeder 2 and give it a test. I assumed that most of the option from the original app would be available in the new and improved app, but was left sorely disappointed. Control over the headlines size and preview length is MIA, meaning I can now only see 7 stories at a time as opposed to 15 on the old app. That’s if there are no photos included, which for some reason display full width in the preview menu sometimes. There’s also zero indication of if a story is read or not. I don’t need a red badge, but some way of knowing if I’ve read something before would be helpful as someone with +20 feeds who can sometimes only catch up once or twice a day. Finally, the new horizontal slideover animation when switching stories feels much slower than the previous app’s vertical switch to the next story. Either way, I paid for a yearly subscription to support the developer (Reeder 1.0 is one of my most used apps) so I hope improvements come over time.

An excellent reinterpretation of what an RSS reader should be

It took me a while to warm up to the approach taken by the new version of Reader as it seemed to turn everything I was comfortable with in the older Reeder on its head. After a couple of forays back and forth between the two versions I have finally settled on the new approach. After I few months with the new version I still have to remember that the letter K has now replaced J as the prime navigation key, and I still finding myself reflexively hitting the letter L (later) rather than J when I want to return to an article previously viewed. That aside, I’m getting to really like the new approach. One small niggle: can we please have a keyboard shortcut ro select reader view?

Undelivered promises

Well…going to update my review to reflect my new concerns. Unfortunately, not only has nothing changed (infrequent updates, undelivered promises, etc.), new ones continue to pop up. Now the app is buggy and inconsistent, so it is even less recommendable than before. Unfortunately this leaves us with an app only worthy of 1 star. I would love to reverse this decision should Silvio bring this app to what was promised, but in the absence of that, it’s not worth your money - stick to classic or another RSS/news reader app. 4+ months without an update is pretty disappointing when there are many promised and incomplete features. The developer once again ‘recreated’ the app (which may be true), for I believe now the 5th time, with a new shiny subscription model (past versions were new one-time purchases) for the app to work. With this subscription, it was promised to have more frequent updates with a stream of frequent new features along the way. Unfortunately, that hasn’t come true, and is disappointing for those of us that paid more in advance to help spur that investment in development. I’m a fan of Silvio’s work and development, but I’m afraid he hasn’t lived up to his promises with this one. Until that changes, I suggest you save your money.

Awful waste of subscription fee

My recommendation would be to avoid this app, feeds fail silently, impossible to usefully diagnose and fix errors from the diagnostics that are visible. The interface probably works for some people but a design where you can’t even clearly see what you have or haven’t read doesn’t really work for skim reading at speed. Even the OPML import was a mess and not easy to tidy up. Wish I’d not wasted the money on it, however most of these issues aren’t apparent until you’ve purchased a subscription so the free tier didn’t actually help me evaluate it in any way.

Feed Glitches Under Tahoe

I love what has now become Reeder Classic with read counts rather than the new Reeder’s timeline. However, Reeder Classic looks now to be abandoned. Hence, downloading the new Reeder. I could probably get used to not having read counts any more due to the otherwise great design of the app except for one thing. It’s really not compatible with macOS Tahoe 26. I have to constantly reload or quit and restart the app for it to show all the feeds. They keep disappearing making it entirely frustrating to use. The app works fine on the iPad with iOS 26, but not on the Mac. This has been going on for the past two weeks that I have been trying to use the app and why the developer has not addressed this is beyond me. Other readers (ReadKit, News Explorer, etc.) have no such problem with Tahoe. I really don’t want to switch apps, but I will not subscribe to an RSS reader that can’t display feeds properly. So, where is the love for this app from the developer? And, their commitment to their customers?

Potential

As others have noted, it takes some getting used to, and has some odd design choices e.g. the filters would be useful, if you could filter by feed or folder, but the inability to do so makes them a very blunt tool; read items in one list will still show up in others, further degrading the utility of filters; the lack of unread counts (or even just a new items marker) on folders or filters causes unnecessary checking; why do you have to tell it what type of feed has just been added, when all the info needed is in the URL?!? Overall I can see the potential, and happily subscribed, but a few small tweaks would make a significant difference.
