I like to see all the features nearby which provide interesting distractions on my trips.
Special offer not working
I wanted to re subscribe when I got a special offer at £25. However when I click the offer in Apple Store it takes me into app where I only have option for £35… not impressed
Latest release
Great app…but search option is just not working properly. Offers street names when searching for towns/villages!!
Good app.
Unfortunately sends marketing notifications when notifications are turned off.
Useful app - just be careful, can be very unsafe
Recently I have found that the routes given by the app are steering me to walk down fairly busy roads with no pavements It is a great app but I would recommend throughly going through suggested routes on google maps first to check it is actually safe first
Northumberland Coast
As a OS user for some 16 years it is an excellent tool. I produced a 5 mile walk for friends in half an hour. Excellent .
Glitchy
Me and partner are finding the app to be very buggy, dont think it deserves its current star rating and thinking of unsubscribing
Useful App
On the whole, it’s a useful app. I like that you can download routes to use offline, that you can record your hikes. But it would be better if it automatically showed where you actually are when you open the app, rather than having to scroll across the whole English map to find your position.
Where is the AR?
This app used to have a very useful augmented reality feature which would identify anything on the horizon if you pointed your device at it. Why has this been removed on the fully paid version?
Why no family sharing?
I’d feel a lot happier paying the subscription cost if my husband and teenager could also share the subscription. When out walking our phones have different signal strength, and battery life. We take three phones on walks to share the risk of one not working. Yet only one can access the subscription. I can’t afford for three separate subscriptions and it seems crazy anyway seeing as we walk together.
It’s brilliant
I think it’s like magic. You’ll never feel lost again.
Rip off
Took my money for a premium subscription , have an email receipt. Open the app, first thing they want is more money for premium? I’ll be contacting apple for a refund!
Good but scope for improvement
Very good as far as it goes. The Apple Watch display is rudimentary and needs redesign. Also, the addition of a waypoint proximity alarm would be very useful.
Over complicated now
Had this app for over 5 years. Unfortunately it’s gone from a simple reliable navigation app to a bloated monster. It’s overblown “bells and whistles” have resulted in it becoming both unreliable and inaccurate when all you want to do is follow a simple downloaded route. It seems to stop of its own accord, is incapable of running in the background whilst you access other apps thereby causing much frustration and annoyance. The dodgy “Snap to Path” feature can also get you in trouble! First world problems I know but it’s not cheap and should be able to work as intended.
Great app, but I can’t get to premium any more
I travel to the UK every few years and love the OS maps app. It’s great for planning walks to historic sites in the countryside and the subscription price is very reasonable for a month at a time. I’m heading to the UK soon and I can’t upgrade to premium. My devices say I already have a subscription on my Apple ID, but I don’t. It asks me to log in with my apple account but there is no “log in with apple” option, only e-mail. So I deleted my account and created a new one with my Apple ID e-mail address and it still does the same thing. Apple doesn’t even show the expired subscription from the last time I went to the UK. I assume because I paid OS directly instead of through the Apple Store. Now when I try to manage my subscription from the web, the website just pushes me back to the app and I get the same “You already have a subscription with this device’s apple ID” error. Please add Apple ID login so this weird billing thing doesn’t come up any more, or bring back web-based subscription creation. Great great app, terrible subscription infrastructure :-( EDIT: I was able to renew by searching my e-mail for the subscription receipt from years ago, which had a “manage subscription” link there. That took me to the App Store and let me Resubscribe, even though the App Store wasn’t listing the expired subscription. Sounds like Apple made some changes to the App Store list of subscriptions that has broken your user experience for US subscribers.
Very useful
I’m a scout leader and find this app brilliant for checking route distance and suitability for hikes. I also use it with my family for holidays and with friends for weekend hikes etc. I pay for the premium subscription which allows me to download routes if I want to give others a paper copy to follow.
Contact me
Even the ‘report an app issue’ link takes you to a 404 error! Trying to subscribe but the handoff between auth in my banking app and going back to the OS app to progress is broken. The screen disappears so the purchase can never be confirmed! Common error with iOs I think. So, how do I subscribe using annual discounted fee?
Personalised Routes
It would be useful to be able to adjust route maps on a desktop or laptop computer
⭐️ 2/5 - Poor UI Logic and Inaccurate Elevation Tracking (iOS)
While the cartography in this app remains unmatched, the user interface design and core tracking metrics are currently failing basic standards for an outdoor navigation tool. Intuitive Navigation Missing: Locating recorded data shouldn't be a trial-and-error process. Live "Activities" are counterintuitively placed within the "Profile" tab instead of being grouped logically under "Saved" or "Routes." Flawed Partner Suggestions: The curation logic for partner routes lacks filter common sense. Recommending the AA (Automobile Association) for a dedicated off-road mountain biking route is completely unhelpful. Flawed Elevation Geometry: On a recent circular route starting and finishing at the exact same location, the app recorded significantly less descent than ascent. According to the final calculations on iOS, I am apparently now quite a long way underground. The visual maps are great, but the underlying data logging and menu layouts require serious attention.
Great maps. Disappointing tech.
Downloading is very restricted in area despite the subscription. Pin icons are almost invisible in colour and size and there are surprising dialog display glitches. Presumably because of an aging paper oriented design and an old coding base. Still the maps are excellent and unlike other formats clearly show the public footpaths which are so useful in the UK countryside.
Great app.
Top draw, great features, use it all the time cycling, walking, in cities.
No longer works on iPad
For some reason i can no longer open the app on my iPad - it just refuses to open at all!
Really useful but some quirks
The offline maps work great and this app has held up when exploring remote locations with poorly defined paths. It has some issues - when tracking a route the phone app sometimes automatically pauses when I stop for a rest but doesn’t warn that it has paused, nor does it restart automatically when I move on so my recorded routes always have gaps; I can’t find any key to the topographical map symbols; the Apple Watch app as others said is useless but could be so so useful.
Don’t see how to integrate with OS hiking guides
I’m a big user of Ordnance Survey hiking guides, particularly the Pathfinder series, but don’t see a way to integrate these routes into the App. Am I missing something?
Limited support for Canada
I couldn’t find any existing routes or trails in my region. No support for topo maps either. Might be useful in other regions but not for me.
Worth every penny
Been a subscriber for years now and honestly it’s fantastic! Great for planning routes and just seeing what the surrounding areas have to offer. Highly recommended
Can’t upgrade. No support available
Can’t upgrade to premium as keep getting an error message to say “subscription linked to another account” even though I don’t have another account. Tried to contact support and it takes you to a broken webpage with a 404 error message
Novice user
I’m just getting to grips with this app, but liking the it so far
Plagued with problems, poor support
This app has great potential but it just doesn’t work. I can’t view routes I have created nor can I view routes uploaded from gpx files. Support is so slow as to be worthless. I am a Premium member which means I subscribe to all their features. That gets you an app that doesn’t work and support that takes days to answer. Why bother. Worse than the cost of the Premium membership is the amount of time wasted trying to get simple things to work. It should be clear by now that I am not a happy user and recommend people to steer clear. I also use AllTrails. It works. I’ve never used AllTrails support, I’ve never needed to.
Great maps, buggy app
I’ve used the os app for years and os maps for even longer. The maps are outstanding, but the app is too unreliable to count on. Unlike other mapping apps where you can work in an offline mode, when there is a problem with the os servers, you are logged out and unable to access your downloaded maps. This can be a critical problem, so I consider the os app to be more of a planning tool than something to rely on when I’m outdoors. There are several other buggy aspects, but most can be worked around. And as a planning tool, the os app is very helpful. It’s worth having just for the convenience of having the excellent os maps at your fingertips.
Mappa Mundi.
I like to read books . I like to read my country. Ever since I was a boy , I have found a deep satisfaction in just looking and imagining the poetry on the parchment.
Payment Requirement
You have to pay a subscription to use the offline maps. I’ve deleted the app as I’m not paying £35.99 per year.
Pretty good
Very useful and pretty goodon the whole. When planning though, it fairly regularly refuses to snap onto an available route which renders some searches and planning completely useless
“Premium” topo has a long way to go
Australian “premium” topo maps appear to be a low res scan which does not zoom without terrible pixelation. Certainly not worth the subscription and nothing like the quality of the UK version. ViewRanger is a better option at the moment for Australia
Map download
Although you can download actual OS maps, which is good: these maps take a very long time to download, in the US 24 hours; you have to scroll to map area to download, so when downloading adjacent areas there is likely to be overlap, so you download overlap areas twice;
Opens up UK hikes
Amazing ways to explore walks that work for everyone
Keeps PAUSING
This app keeps PAUSING so all your data gets skewed. You have to keep RESUMING. Surely, it’s an easy fix? But OS won’t sort it.
Great maps poor planning tool
Update: OS maps are great for hiking and biking. Traveling a lot round the country it saves money not having to buy and carry local maps (usually 2 as I always seem to walk on the edge of the map. One thing annoys me when in a popular area there are too many routes made by other users, which can be very distracting.
Can’t Rely on This App
We subscribed to the maps for a month long walking holiday in UK. Downloaded maps disappeared, their update went badly with many bugs. Could be fatal, so carry a hard copy map.
Doesn’t work when connected to the internet
Update. The app works great with no internet connection. Disable mobile data for the app and it works great. Having purchased paper maps, I’ve used this app to download the off-line version. The app continually requires me to re-login, and I frequently have to re-download, or at least verify the download, before I can use the maps. Horribly flaky behaviour.
Dimi
I can retrace my runs on here and get the distance in my free time for free
Really useless for planning a route
I can't understand why this app gets so much support. I'm a bright guy and you would think that a map navigation tool would require a FROM and a TO. Not this app!
Now has watch maps but activities broken
Great to see the watch app can now display maps. However in 5.6.0 I can't save activities to Apple Health. The watch app asks for read permissions when you first install it but doesn't seem to be trying to write. Reinstalling doesn't fix it.
Quits repeatedly with large custom offline maps
Created a custom map of most of Pembrokeshire (250K) for an upcoming hike. Once it finished downloading, I zoomed in and out, scrolled, etc. It only took a few seconds for OS Maps to quit. I tried again with similar results. A separate custom online map of SE Wales had the same trouble. I had fewer problems with paper map downloads (OS maps that have a digital activation code). This makes me think that OS Maps was not thoroughly tested with large offline maps (>250K). I will make sure that I carry paper maps for now.
Not serious about safety
The app developers are pretty casual with their users’ safety. Offline maps are an important safety tool on a hike and if you can’t rely on them being available (or if they’re not available at all zoom levels), it can be a risk to use them on a hike. Given that this is basically a government funded endeavour, it’s terrible how careless they are.
Excellent
Great self route creation feature
Shocking
Constantly crashes on my iPad
The life saver
Never leave home without th OS app. Tells you where you are now and which way you are pointing. Fundamental
Released with fatal bugs
In July of 2016 I used this app for walks in the Yorkshire Dales. I had planned the trip carefully, researching walk routes on the Internet, and downloaded about a dozen offline maps, a key feature of the app, designed so you can view a map in a wilderness area without data connectivity. The maps saved ok, but I discovered when I tried to use them, that if I loaded a saved route on top of an offline map, it would crash immediately.. On my first walk I had to abandon the app altogether and use a paper map. Later I discovered I could use the app if I loaded the map I needed for the upcoming walk using wifi in my hotel. As long as I didn't save it, it would persist in cache and I could load saved routes on top of it. So I finished the trip using the App that way. That's why a 2* rating. When I contacted customer support after my trip to report the problem, they admitted this was a known bug if you save more than "3 or 4" offline maps.
