Seatfrog Rip off

Tried to upgrade didn’t mention it was upgrading to standard premium and not first class. Don’t use this app or certainly don’t ever book standard premium. Complete rip off

Used to be good

When this first started you could get an upgrade for 10%-15% of the standard ticket price. Now it’s typically 100%+ the value of the standard ticket and so the value is greatly reduced. To make it worse, the auction ends so close to the departure time of the train there is no chance to enjoy perks like 1st Class Lounges when they’re available. It was good whilst it lasted!

Used to be great

I've been using SeatFrog for several years. I've had some absolute bargains in the past but sadly no more. Perhaps it's because SeatFrog has become more popular but I've only bought one upgrade in the last year. When upgrades are being bid above £40 you may as well just buy a first class ticket in the first place. I'll give it to the end if the year but I shall be uninstalling the app if I don't find any cheap upgrades before then.

Refund policy

I bid on the wrong train which was my mistake but bid so high I got an instant upgrade which is now not refundable. This will be the last time I use Seatfrog.

Cannot cancel a bid.

Personally don’t like the system, yet another middleman taking a cut.. If you bid on a train time, make sure it’s the right one.. :(. Should be able to cancel around 2 hours before, or within 5 minutes or something to cover mistakes.

Easy, good value but flawed

Often represents excellent value, compared to what are hideously overpriced train tickets. Needs to be some way of withdrawing beds under emergency circumstances, or process to appeal.

Unavailable seats

We booked seats on the 11-47 train from chesterfield to London St Pancras, which was running 40 minutes late to find all seats were taken. Why do seat frog sell seats that aren’t available.had to sit in second class instead a waste Of money

Can’t login

Tried to sign up for this and the magic link doesn’t work. A modal box pops up with something went wrong, then the app goes back to the login screen and the animation loops after a split second.

Stuck with bad seats

As a solo traveller, being assigned an “upgraded” seat at a table of four makes the journey less comfortable than just being in standard class in an airline style seat. Why can’t seating preferences be added, and why are they so strict about not changing seats?

Great idea, limited for Scotland

Love the different features however a couple of them aren’t available for any Scottish stations (eg. secret fare). Also can’t seem to be able to add a railcard which means I unfortunately can’t use the app to buy tickets as I’d be paying more than apps such as Trainline. If this is rectified then I’d definitely use it!

The app is super helpful and easy to use. You can upgrade your train tickets super easily. Their customer support is also prompt and excellent.

Lack of flexibility

Accidentally booked wrong upgrade due to new UX features. Seat frog wouldn’t let me pay the difference for the upgrade I wanted. The rigidity is off putting and responses from customer services using multiple names in same comms doesn’t give me a great deal of trust!!

Flawed

Good for a solo traveller, but you can’t be sure that 2 people upgrading in the same transaction will get seats together. I’d rather sit together in standard than apart in First Class.

Not as good as it once was

This app used to be great. I used to be able to upgrade to first class on Avanti west coast. Today I thought I was bidding on a first class upgrade auction. What I actually got was “Standard Premium” (Premium Economy). This app no longer provides the value it once did and it is time to uninstall

Good app Customer Service will put up a fight if your train is cancelled

Seat frog is currently the monopoly on seat upgrades and has done and provided me a decent service when buying tickets when the train has ran. If the train has been cancelled they will put up a fight when presented with data showing the train has cancelled and you have abandoned the journey. I had a chain of about 4 reply’s with their customer support with proof the train was cancelled until I quoted my rights they gave up and refunded. If you look now there FAQ form for refunds is blocked by bitley so looks like they are dragging their feet on refunds.

Innovation in UK rail fare upgrades !!

Best thing to happen to UK trains since coal. You only bid what you want to bid and only pay if you win. It’s pretty simple.

Be very careful when using!

The click through from the app may not take you to the right train leaving you with an upgrade for another train. Good luck with customer service. Shame as it’s a good idea

★★★☆☆ United Kingdom · v4.4.10 · 19 May 2026

Overpriced

I like the app. It works well but when it started you could bit £5 for an upgrade and hope for the best. Now it’s starts at £26 in some place. This weekend I’m travelling Newcastle to Edinburgh and the bidding starts at £26 but I can buy an upgrade with LNER direct for £11 and this guarantees me a seat. What’s the point. Just seems like you are overpaying yourselves

Tickets purchased using this app don’t have an option to be added to Apple Wallet, which makes it a poor platform citizen.

Screen cuts off info, beware £3 platform fee

Iphone SE: Apr 2026 Looking at saved payment cards, it cuts off the expiry date so you can't tell if it's still valid. Can screenshot if you like. Old review below: the auction bid screen has the edges cut off. Still just about usable. Beware the £3 platform fee which only appears once you place a bid. Before then, it says an unspecified “Transaction fee **may** apply”. In fact there’s no “may” about it - it “will” apply. Otherwise I’ve occasionally had a bargain 1st upgrade but just as often been outbid to close to the ordinary upgrade price.

Better up to date information on seats

Used to upgrade from Bristol to Penzance worked great. Tried for upgrade Penzance to Paddington no go kept on saying only one seat available, needed two. Gave up got on to train to find over 20 available first class seats for entire route. Brought upgrade direct from GWR onboard.
