Tuta as a Service is the best of the best when it comes to protecting your privacy (just ask ChatGPT or Claude) The mail client itself is basic but could be better. Anyway not the real reason I got tuta. So service is 5 stars but since we are rating the app it’s 4 stars for now

Not sure why I paid for it

Search is horrible. It finds things that do not match, and it misses things that do. You cannot sort messages. It frequently says Offline and has a link that says “Reconnect,” but that link doesn’t reconnect. I am not sure it does anything at all. Frequently, you cannot delete messages. Swipe, and it appears to delete, but it remains in the inbox. Check on web, and it turns out it was successfully deleted, but the iOS app does not update the message list correctly. Swiping is clunky and needs major work. When swiping left and right, list should not also scroll up and down at the same time, but this app does.

I have an iPhone XR running iOS 18.7.9 and about half of the time when I open the Tuta mail app I only see a white blank screen! I am wondering if other people have experienced the same problem or is it only on my phone? This is really more of a question than a rating; I would like to fix this issue but I am not sure how.

Frustrating customer support

I loved using this app and the calendar function is incredible, furthermore the people and the values seem to be very noble. But a couple days ago my email tripped the spam filter because I sent out ten resumes over the course of three hours and now I can no longer receive emails or of course send. This would be no big deal because I understand completely how this could happen but unfortunately there seems to be no appeal process and the customer support email seems to be inactive. This is a tremendous nightmare for me because many of the jobs I applied to through this email are dream jobs but now they are quite far away.

Lack of Log Put Feature is a major privacy concern

The email service is okay in theory but the inability to fully log out of my account every time I use it poses a major security risk if my device is compromised or someone else uses it. There should be an easy Log Out option so that an actual password (not just a passcode on my phone) is required each time. Even ending active sessions did not log me out and I was able to access the app and emails with just a passcode. This breaches my works security protocols so I will be looking at alternative email providers.

Fooling people in the name of privacy

I was fooled into buying its subscription (and then canceling later) because this company does nothing but to create hype about “DeGoogling” movement and show off how bad American companies are. However, in reality, it’s even worse than they keep attacking all the time. The company will simply suspend you receiving and sending email if you don’t pay a subscription even if it’s a free account offered by them. Shame on you, Tuta. I doubt a tiny company like this could survive even a few years with these unethical practices.

Missing core features

After reviewing (and purchasing) tutanota, it is a very good product, however it is missing a core feature that I can't believe isn't included... which is setting automated rules/triggers. I have so much junk email come from what I would consider reputable companies. I don't want to block or mark as spam, but most of their maillists output do not interest me. On Gmail (and other products) you can set basic filter rules and auto mark them as read. Tutanota sort of does this, but it only applies to putting emails into folders. If this feature were available then I would be able to use and recommend it. Until then, it's not practical to use as my daily. Sorry for the harsh review but I can't score more than 2/5 until that's available. Please consider implementing this. Also, the macos app is great but the iOS app often has issues syncing and showing notifications for mail that isn't there. iOS app and search is still broken 2026-02.

Wiped my phone contacts.

I wanted to like Tuta as an option to offer private email, but the app somehow wiped all my phone contacts from the native apple contacts app when I synced it. There was a warning about “sync issues” with iCloud, but no clear explainer, and no warning saying *all your phone contacts might be REMOVED entirely*. Thankfully, I was able to reimport them from Tuta, albeit with all contact photos gone and a few errors. And I still have iCloud backups, but this should not even be possible. I am young and more technologically savvy than most of my peers in white collar work, if I can make this mistake, so can 90–95% of users, Tuta needs to fix this.

I’ve been using Tuta for more than 5 years. In the beginning, it was acceptable to have a sluggish and unresponsive UI - I thought they would eventually fix it, and the pricing was fair enough at £1 per month. But now they’ve raised the price to £4, and on top of that, searching in the email app is a paid feature. Yes, you read that right - to search your own mail, you have to pay extra. Deletes account and holds your MFA hostage

Absolute nightmare of an app. If you don't log into a free account for 6 months, Tuta completely purges it. Because I used this email as the recovery key for my UniFi network infrastructure, I am now completely locked out of my hardware.  To make it worse, their policy is to never recycle addresses, meaning the ONLY way to get my email back to receive my security codes is to create a new paid subscription. They are literally holding my deleted digital identity hostage for a ransom fee.  Forcing users into a paid tier to resolve a lockout caused by their own aggressive deletion policy is a toxic user experience. Go to Proton instead—they actually respect their users and don't create digital emergencies like this. Avoid Tuta at all costs.

I want to love it but just can’t—Free Tier Review

I really just wished the company gave the search functionality on an email service. Without it; the free tier is rendered useless for proper use. I’d rather be reduced to 500mb of email storage in exchange for search functionality. It’s sad but I’ll be completely switching to proton or mailfence. I am a user since 2021; I did wait until to see if such a basic function would be rolled out to the free tier but it’s just not possible for me to fall in love with this mail without it. Everything else was solid tho. I am aware that the company offers paid subscription so it may be right for you if that’s the way you want to go. For me however, I’m coming from gmail, Hotmail etc so I sacrificed a lot for privacy, just needed the search to make my life work but it is what it is..

The app is great… but. ..

How can you ask people to pay for a subscription, but when they wake up in the morning, you’ve discontinued support for their phone. My phone is on v15.8. It’s just had a security update… so it’s gotta be a secure phone. But Tuta says it’s not. None of my other apps have complained. My bank app still works. Can I expect my bank account to be emptied by hackers, in the next few days?? I should do the right thing and let my bank know. They may be unaware!! It’s just an email app. It’s not really the end of the world, if it gets hacked. But the 28p in my bank, well, I have to pay my mortgage with that. I could lose my house soon. If there’s any kind of security issue, it’s probably your app development that’s needing some work. Not my phone needing hourly updates. Don’t get me wrong. This app is seriously good. It’s given many people some well deserved privacy. Paid for, or not. We are all grateful for that. But some phones can’t be updated, yet they’re still encrypted and secure. Plus, many of us can’t afford to buy a new phone every 10 minutes. Have a re-think… please.

Add ability to set alert sound in notification settings!!

Many other apps let you set an alert sound specific to that app in settings > notifications > [name of app]. Tuta mail REALLY needs this. As of right now we are relegated to only being able to change the global default alerts sound which the tuta app uses. This is b.s. man. I want to be able to set a custom alert sound for the Tuta app so I immediately know that I’m getting an email. It’s ridiculous that this hasn’t been implemented yet.
