Secure Calendar
UI is pretty good, a fine comprimise for zero knowledge personal and shared calendars. Looking forward to the 2026 app re-write. I tell all my friends to use ProtonCal.
An absolute buggy mess
App crashes on startup after loading my calendars. I uninstalled and reinstalled. It doesn’t matter if I load from the widget or the app icon. Crashes within a few seconds of launching every time. Instead of spending their time trying to roast businesses on LinkedIn they should fix their broken mess of an app.
Slowly replacing Le Google
Issue with subscription calendar only on the iOS app showing multiple instances of a subscribed calendar. The event shows up ~15 times when it is on the day it’s supposed to happen. It stays there even after the event has passed. Future events only show once, until it gets to that specific date. Desktop app is fine.
Constant syncing errors
“Event synchronization error. Response error.” These are frequent now. Will have to switch to another app as this one is unreliable
Slow
I love the proton ecosystem but this particular app is the weak link. It is painfully clunky and slow. Creating new events takes multiple seconds to save. Opening the app takes a few seconds (even though I have 12 calendars, it should Load right up.) UPDATE clearing the cache helped it somewhat. Still a few seconds on a modern device. Also, the app should know to clear the cache automatically to make it better. Even still, thank you !
The best and doesnt track me as a product!
Transitioned for google and im so happy. Proton ia gret.
Proton isn’t focused on apps
I’ve been a subscriber for a couple years now. In that time, I don’t think any of their apps have had an update. I’m glad a company exists that’s focused on privacy but their apps are stuck in 2005. It’s increasingly frustrating that you can’t do basic things - like set Proton Calendar as your phone’s calendar application. A word of warning to others, do not put all your eggs in one basket. You may find it’s nearly impossible to exit something if you ever change your mind.
Good but needs some improvements
Needs to come up to par with other calendaring systems - love how it’s integrated with proton email but man it needs some love
Needs More Updates and Features
The app could be really good but it needs bugs worked out and more features.
It’s ok
It doesn’t search for locations when you enter one. So it’s up to you to enter it into your navigation app later. This is particularly annoying for people with CarPlay because it breaks the automatic suggested destinations feature that uses the calendar location. But I doubt this app integrates with CarPlay anyways. It doesn’t accept calendar invites. I tried to open the ICS and this app wasn’t offered as an option. I also tried drag and drop into the app and that failed too. It also uses my proton email address instead of my personal domain email address that is set as my default email address on the website. I don’t want to share the proton mail address with my invitees. And how I sync my iCloud calendar to this app??? Or my tasks? This app isn’t full featured enough to compete with Outlook, Google, or Apple calendar.
Great overall
I’ve been using the app for several years now. Started using it in its original beta and have never looked back. It’s come a long way with functionality and still has a long ways to go but overall I love it and the peace of mind it brings knowing that big tech and other online trackers don’t have my entire life’s history documented on their servers to sale to who knows who. My biggest wish/want is for Proton to finally release the new calendar app that allows for offline mode and the to-do features built in…was originally announced so long ago and keeps getting kicked down the road so if that could be released any year now, that would be great. Other than that, I’d recommend this tech suite to anyone.
No offline mode
the fact that this doesn’t have an offline mode is unforgivable
Great app, small request.
Love the app, no complaints at all so far. Just a simple request really, the yearly repeat option for events should have the same ability as the weekly, and monthly to repeat on days, not just dates. It would be greatly appreciated, and make adding come holidays to the calendar easier.
Moving in the right direction
2026 Aug update - tried again but to be honest, only having the calendar colour in a little strip on the left looks bland and is no real help. Calendar is the weak link in the Proton system. Take a look at Awesome Cal as this is the level I’d need before I can switch. The rest of the Proton ecosystem is superb. 2026 update - moving in the right direction. Still some way to go, as import from Apple calendar still a pain and full day and timed events look exactly the same. Also less urgent but also needed is the ability to import local Outlook pst archives. The Proton Bridge app seems ideal to span the intentional gap imposed by Apple to lock us all in. I hope one day there will be a Proton Messenger so I can fully remove myself from the icy grip of Apple. 2025 July update - A big step forward with an iPad friendly version. Definitely moving in the right direction. An extra star for the improvement and another for the positive developer response. Thank you. Now need to import calendars into Proton, so I can remove them from Apple. 2025 June update - How can it be that over a year has passed and STILL there is no advances? Still can’t easily import Apple calendar or Outlook pst. Still no iPad app. Down to one star. Real shame, as Proton is a great email. Original review - Needs to at least compete with the basic Apple Calendar app; and that means a widget, an iPad version and offline use. When I looked at the ‘add calendar’ option, it didn’t show the calendars I already have set-up on my iPad. No way I am inputting nine years of calendar information by hand! Compared to the other apps, Calendar seems to be an after thought. I would like to get in to the Proton Ultimate system but this and the poor/lacking support for importing/exporting from/to Outlook pst archive in Proton Mail make it a non-starter. A sync add-on for Outlook would solve this but I doubt there will be the demand to make it worthwhile.
Nice Calendar
I found the calendar easy to use. It had all the features I needed except one - colors. $50/year is a bit steep to get colors for calendar entries, when I don’t need more than the free level for any other service.
Excellent Calendar!
Proton calendar works great and is the best for privacy!
App keeps freezing and events don’t appear
I’ve completely switched over to Proton from Google. However, the calendar app keeps freezing. At least once per time I go onto the app, and then I have to close it and re-open it. It also won’t always load my events. Instead, the calendar opens empty. And then when it DOES correctly display my events and I go to tap on one, the app freezes. This needs to be fixed.
Feature Request
Hi! I really like the app. I would love it if you could add Liquid Glass to it.
No offline mode, slow & clunky
Whenever you are offline, this app will not allow you to add anything to your calendar. If you want to scroll through days quickly, you can’t do this, you have to scroll forward one day, wait for it to catch up, then scroll again, you go at its pace, not yours. If you want to change an event forward e.g. by one week, and that spans a change of month, you can’t see a mini calendar view, you have to already know which date one week forward is and use the scroll wheels to select a date. It’s all just so clunky…
Nice but missing
I like it but biggest thing missing to me is a search function. If i plan something wat ahead or if I want to know last time I did anything, I have to click every event till I find it
Número uno fan
Been with proton for nearly a decade. Big fan of what they stand for. I use this calendar instead of apples calendar. Easy to use, great reminders.
Requires connectivity
Unlike, say, the built-in iPhone calendar, this software requires internet connectivity. That may be fine for people in rich countries, but for those of us in what Europeans like to call “the global south”, we cannot have 24/7 connectivity. Where I live, that kind of connectivity is both too expensive and too unreliable. This is another toy for rich people, not for the masses. —— After writing this, I got a request to update more positively my review because they are considering making the app more user-friendly for people who cannot be connected 24/7 to the internet like Europeans can. Happy to upgrade my review because— when I see action, not just European promises.
Minute change suggestion
This is a good app. I’d recommend adding a feature that allows users to change the minute column to increments of 5 instead of 1. That would reduce options from 60 to 12, making scheduling more efficient, and few people schedule at times outside of increments of 5.
Doesn’t show contact Birthdays
It has potential, and I mostly prefer it over the Apple Calendar, but it’s not quite there yet. One important feature that’s missing is contact birthdays. Which is a dealbreaker for me so I’m going to have to move back to the Apple Calendar. It would ideally pull these from phone contacts, but it doesn’t even pull them from proton contacts. It’s in the top 10 most requested features and was first requested in 2020 so they’re aware of this but the request is still under review after all this time.
Functionality feature limit
The app doesn’t allow a yearly event on say the 2nd sunday in a given month. It allows it monthly but not yearly. I contacted proton and was told by Nikola that the developers weren’t adding that feature. Ive since deleted the app from all my devices and reevaluating my paying account. In a followup email from Nikola, i was told he will recheck with the developers about it. This makes one wonder if they were ever consulted in the first place. Who knows. I gave it 3 stars because it isnt fully functional and have gone back to apple calendar which does provide this feature. Response to developer, i deleted the emails with the ticket number along with the app. I stated who i communicated with.
Good, but room for improvement
This app is pretty good, but when someone shares an event with you, you have almost no control. I just want to change it so that shared calendars are different colors. I also can't delete a shared event- not me doing the sharing. I want it separate from "my calendar". I think you can do a lot of this from desktop, but not from the app.
Unbearably slow
Takes 10-30 seconds to do anything in the app. Unusable
Need watch app please
Works great on phone and iPad but missing watch app. Add watch support and I’ll change rating to 5 stars
Agenda View
Annoyingly the Agenda view does not show upcoming events, i’d like see my week at a view. We’re not all business users, being a home user I just need an overview that I can see without clicking on a day to see what it is.
Missing important function
There is no ability to search for an event (past or upcoming). This is very inconvenient and frustrating.
Persian calendar
Add Persian calendar please.
Lots of bugs fixed, still lacking basic calendar functions
Idk where my original review went? Regardless, I appreciate they improved a lot of the initial problems I was having. So I figured I could finally dive in since those issues were addressed and maybe it’s a functional app now. After trying to fully transition, I am now having a whole slew of other problems, again, with basic calendar functionality. I get a synchronization error for so many things which rejects the creation of an event or any changes you make to an event) when I: - Try to move an event from my Personal calendar to my Work calendar (both in Proton Calendar, just using the feature where you have different colors for different kinds of events) - Trying to add multiple custom notifications at once - Trying to change an existing single occurrence event to reoccurring - Trying to create an event for the first time, selecting a calendar other than the default calendar AND adding any other modification like adding notifications, or changing setting it to be reoccurring. There are more that I can’t remember right now, including one option which actually just crashes the app every time I select it. I’ll come back and add them when I run into them again.
Thank you Proton AG for reaching out.
One example of problems with events is that of recurring events. I have a recurring event every Saturday, but on some weekends I need to modify the time. I cannot do that from my phone or tablet; instead, I have to always do it from my desktop. The modification could be the time or maybe it's an invitation for a recurring event from another family member that I need to associate with a particular calendar not the default "My Calendar". Again, I have to go to my desktop because the change is not possible via my phone or my tablet. I hope this helps give you a better idea. Thank you for your time.
Widget problems
when i finish a task i like to remove it from my calendar but the change is not reflected on the widget even after spamming the refresh button and even removing the widget and adding it back . Its not a app breaking problem but its an inconvenience and when i hit the refresh button my widget should actually refresh to reflect whats on my calendar.
Too basic
Misses too many options available in other calendars like Outlook. Search box for example would be nice so one can search for specific scheduled meetings or appointments
Effective Minimalist Calendar
Clean, easy to use, shares across devices calendar app. No frills, it just works like it’s supposed to. Future enhancement? Allow configuration option to set start of week to Monday, so weekends (Saturday-Sunday) display together. For some of us, that’s how our lives/schedules work. ========== Back for a followup, and a time away looking at other calendar systems, this continues to be one worthy of a go. It can be configured for Monday start. The interface is simple and clean. Works across devices and as a web based utility. As I said before - no frills, it just works like it’s supposed to. I’ll be here for a while now. Thank you Proton.
Just start over from scratch
I love privacy companies and Proton, but you guys have just lost the plot lately. Focused on way too many other apps when Calendar remains so bad. I tried to give this app another shot, but this is STILL just not a good calendar for anyone trying to do serious productivity work or running a business. No search function, no way to import things from mail, no address autofill, no way for addresses to open in Maps. Colors are a “paid feature”? Seriously guys? I signed up for Proton unlimited and I even agree with the free account people that’s just pretty lame. Unfortunately, I have to stick to Google Calendar still because Proton is not focused on their core product that made them into the suite they are now. Mail & Calendar. Lock in guys.
Love it, but I could use a few improvements
I love Proton products, period. Nevertheless, I would like to see some improvements on the calendar app: 1) be able to drag and drop events from one day to another, 2) make sure all events are editable on mobile app (that’s not the case right now), make printing the calendar available for those that might need that.
Needs serious work
I like a a calendar to notify me WHAT the event is not just a generic " an event is going to happen". That tells me nothing. Second app in the Proton suite ive dropped using because, it lacks basic stuff. Its been mentioned by several customers on your forum. As a paying subscriber I expect better.
Need to add some features
I love using proton mail so of course I want to add proton calendar on top of that. I’m an avid digital calendar user (used outlook calendar, Google Calendar), but I want to ditch those and fully use a more ethical calendar usage. Here are a few problems: it doesn’t have the holidays implemented, it doesn’t have the search bar, and it doesn’t have the feature to add additional email to connect so it can automatically add calendar invites. Hopefully the future updates can add these, or even better upgrade.
Superb Calendar
Proton Calendar is brilliant and works so well and the interface is excellent. Just the best!
The worst proton app
No search, slow to load events, takes maybe 20 seconds to make a new event. Absolutely unusable.
⚠️ big bug
① please add ability to add participants within your own organization. Currently error reads “self invitation not allowed” ② indicates the number of pending invites but not who.
Notification Hell
Proton Calendar uses background tasks to handle notifications. If the app has been idle for too long or closed or hears someone sneeze, then it won’t send you notifications for upcoming events. It’s not a good tool unless you are the type of person who references a calendar without relying on notifications for timing reminders. It’s been disappointing.
Desperately Needs a Search Feature
I see that you already acknowledged in response to a previous review that a search feature is planned to be added, but that was back in September and your most recent blog post about Proton Calendar makes no mention of it. Can we please get that coming?
Improving recently
Some great additions recently that solved several issues for me. Glad to see the app improving over time.
Have to Upgrade to use colors
The single most basic feature I was looking to use. Color coating events , isn't even even available after downloading it Doesn't even give details when I clicked the upgrade.
Good but no search functionality
It would be almost perfect if you could search for events
Basic
Missing many features found elsewhere not least the search function
Has potential
Glitches every time I try to make an adjustment to an event I have set to repeat. Sometimes it duplicates the event and sometimes nothing at all. I never leave reviews but they don’t offer customer support so came here so they might fix it. I like the encryption and the visual design despite not having access to color coding in free version. But why pay for something that’s glitching and has no way to communicate bugs to staff?
