The most ethical Ai
I do not believe that the majority of people who use the Apple Store today look down at the App privacy section of the desired application they wish to download. If they did, they would be horrified at the unnecessary amount of private data that these apps and companies require of them. Lumo by Proton provides an AI that interfaces with the user on a strictly confidential level. It also avoids creating anything more than a professional connection with the user. Its primary function is that of which all Ai should be, a tool to be used. If I have any constructive critiques it would be the speed at which answers come. They typically are far more delayed than those of the mainstream models. Other than that, I feel Lumo provides a great balance between privacy and user interactions.

Now everytime you click send it just doesn’t load your message and shows it blank as if it’s still waiting for a message.
Underrated LLM but needs work
I was pleasantly surprised at all the features and capabilities of Lumo. They really stepped up their game. I was a daily Grok user but Lumo has been a breath of fresh air in terms of: ✅ response style (rich visual hierarchy) ✅ helpfulness ✅ tone ✅ depth ✅ customization Areas for improvement: 🚫it stops operating mid-response if phone goes to sleep or switching apps. 🚫 text is way too small 🚫 file size for uploads/docs etc, needs a major increase 🚫 freezes/slows during longer conversations and sometimes have to close and re-launch app. 🚫 UX/UI is aesthetically pleasing but it could be a lot smoother when navigating. Overall: Big fan and excited for what’s to come. Just please take my advice above.
worked once
I ❤️ proton, and had super high hopes for private AI. My first use was cut short 3 sentences in. I log in with my user and for weeks it now as soon as I open the app, it says I have used all my chat limit on the system for the week, without even searching a single thing for weeks. So only 3 sentences out of the chat on the first day and none since. This is the opposite experience I have had with every proton product. Signed, big proton fan.
This has huge potential
I really hope this becomes a fully integrated AI across the proton family of apps. It would be very cool if it integrated either the likes of Mail to help write emails, docs and calendar but that is completely private.
Best chatbot overall tbh
I’m not just glazing it, as with everything it has room for improvement. That being said privacy first and eco friendly data center is amazing! I haven’t had a problem with the responses and I love the memory control and overall customization. The main thing I would like from it is a response option to where you can highlight certain parts of a response follow up on it. Also during typing a response it would be nice to be able to minimize what you have typed to be able to re-read what it said easier, without cutting what you wrote. Again, fantastic app and a great for everyone. And yes this praise is deserved

No Go Button
App needs to be opened several times before will present the arrow to submit a query. Today I’ve re-launched it 10+ times and cannot submit a question. What am I paying for here. Fix this.
Promising, but room for major improvement
The good: it’s encrypted, it’s private, it’s under Swiss jurisdiction which has way better privacy and data usage policies than the United States and many other places. With Lumo 2.0, things definitely improved in terms of coherency of responses and reduction of hallucinations. With the plus subscription, I seem to be able to use it nearly endlessly and never hit any kind of limit usage caps or other constraints. It has improved in the year since I’ve been using it, so that’s promising. It has gotten much better about file handling, including images, PDF files and others, and this genuinely brings it closer to its less privacy focused competitors in terms of capability. The bad: the user interface, especially on iOS, is clunky and doesn’t match the polish one would expect on a modern iPhone app, these days. It still seems to hallucinate more frequently than competitors like Claude and ChatGPT. It often forgets my custom instructions during most conversations, with me having to remind it at least once. I do appreciate that it now automatically compacts conversations once they get too large, so that those conversations can continue. However, by the time the conversation is large enough to be compacted, it starts draining your phone battery and taking forever to get a response, and even the user interface starts to get less responsive and glitchy. Maybe there’s more work to do in figuring out how to manage lengthy, long running conversations. I want to especially talk about accessibility: Screen reader accessibility is inadequate. I’m blind and I’m using the voiceover screen reader in iOS, and obviously I am able to use the product, so I would not call the app inaccessible, but it’s more difficult than it needs to be. I will say, this isn’t hard – if you are using semantic HTML elements, or components designed out of the box to be screen reader accessible and W3 compliant, you should get this accessibility for free. I don’t know what these shops are doing, probably spinning up their own custom components that do not adhere to these guidelines, but it’s frustrating and fixable. I hope proton will take this seriously, because it impacts their entire suite of apps. Myself and other Blind customers are just as worthy of a complete experience as anyone else, especially because I’m paying for subscriptions to several of their products. Note: based on the developer response and what seems like a sincere desire to make these suggested improvements, I will happily update my review and my rating, but first I’d like to wait and see if the improvements materialize. Hands down better than any other ai out there. Quick and accurate responses and Lumo is quirky adorable and funny to boot!!
Enter button missing
Half the time the enter button never appears so app is unusable. Microphone button is always there though

Small font size
The small font size that does not appear to be adjustable in the app and that does not seem to tie into the accessibility font size in iOS, makes the app virtually unusable.
Has problems
I use all proton products but Lumo has problems on my IPad. When i select it a blank screen appears and I can no longer access. Must remove it and reinstall.
Privacy first that earns your trust
If you value privacy and ethical tech, Lumo is a no-brainer. It may not be the most feature-packed or powerful LLM out there, and the UX has room to grow, but that's not the point. What sets Lumo apart is what's happening behind the scenes: your data isn't being mined, scraped, or used to train models. You're not the product. As a Proton user, subscribing is a given, the Plus plan is genuinely reasonable, there's no cap, and it pays off. The key is to invest time upfront: set up your projects and structure your work. Do that, and Lumo's responses are excellent. It's not trying to be everything to everyone, and that honesty is refreshing. If protecting your data matters to you (and it should), this is the best AI assistant available.

If you want complete anonymity use the free version of the apps as you won’t link credit info. There you go higher level opsec. Update: 07.21.26 My saved chats have all disappeared!????! What happened with this latest update?!
No copying and pasting photos and files
I wish Lumo allowed pasting photos straight to the app like Venice and other AIs; it would make life easier; sometimes I just want to paste a photo or PDF.
Why
If you want to pay for a far less capable AI model with even stricter guard rails and censorship than the others, then this is for you. As a long time user of proton-mail, I’m disappointed to see the company spending money on something like this. Proton the privacy hook is useless when you censor content. Your Lumo is less capable, and has more censorship than all of the other models. Why would I care about privacy? This is just stupid and a waste of money. This project should be shut down.
Depends on use case
It certainly chats with you. I wouldn’t use it for research. I mainly use ChatGPT. I asked ChatGPT to come up with a knowledge test for Lumo, and it generated a prompt to determine who oversees the CDC and the WHO and what actions have been taken by either in the past 90 days. Lumo took a really long time to think about it before giving up (based on other reviews, I’m not sure if giving up was an error or because the prompt was political, though I wasn’t trying to make the AI take any particular stance). Then I decided alright, let’s ask it something simple but somewhat obscure, so I asked it for Sonic’s middle name. It said Sonic did not have a middle name, not even in the Archie comics. ChatGPT got Maurice immediately and provided a citation. I’d be comfortable using this to bounce ideas off of or vent, but it’s ability to search for information isn’t quite up to par. I do really like the interface and the cat mascot though. I hope it continues to improve.
text size is WAY too small on ipad
1. even if I put 275% zoom the text size on iPad still looks like it’s 100% zoom. obviously I don’t need it to be gigantic like 275% zoom but.. it’s still too small and it should increase based on the zoom% (at least to a bigger size than the standard 100% zoom) 2. please add A copy button for my own prompts, not just edit. Right now tapping my own message only gives a pencil icon to edit it. Most other AI apps let you copy your own prompt text too, which is handy when you want to reuse or tweak it somewhere else.
Unusable
Tap mic button – immediate crash, app closes. Not occasionally, every time. If you cannot talk to your AI, it is not useful. It’s 2026 – why do we even have a text field anymore? (I’ll give it to you for odd spellings and exact numbers, but honestly … )
Really good but could use refinement
I value privacy so I downloaded the app. It works good for my daily usage . The responses aren’t as verbose as chat gpt. I would like the ability to upload multiple pictures at once. Also I think it would be good to not have to enter a prompt when a picture is uploaded within the same chat.
Needs so much work
So frustrating. I love the personality of this little guy but something is seriously wrong with the app. It regularly just logs me out or claims there’s a connection problem when there isn’t. Answers will come up empty for no reason over and over. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled and given it days for them to update or fix. And when you contact customer service, you get this long list of things for YOU to do and they don’t do anything at all as far as I can tell. So I suspect I’ll have to get a refund and get rid of it. That’s really too bad but they just aren’t taking care of it. Edited to add: I just went from paying the year to free and they purged all my chats. THANKS. Wow.
Still Needs a lot of improvement
I’m sorry but this AI model keeps getting stuff wrong. Even when asking about things that are easily available on the internet. I have plenty of examples of it making stuff up and then back tracking once I call it out. Also Proton keeping their cloud storage subscription separate isn’t a convenient. Hopefully they make some much needed changes and I can try this again in the future.

Bug report unrelated to review: Hi Team, sorry to use the review section for this but I’m not digging through a hundred help articles to find where I can submit a ticket rn. I used up my weekly chat limit over a week ago (2+ actually) and it hasn’t reset. This came around the launch of lumo 2.0 (unrelated but I liked the old cat design better btw). I use lumo for everything so this has really affected my lifestyle. I how it can be resolved soon. Good day. Actual review: I used to use OpenAI but I found the suck-up-like answers to be a bit of a turn-off, and I really wanted more privacy. As soon as Lumo was developed, I downloaded it (already a big fan of proton for about 7 years), and it’s been great! I had to use ChatGPT and other a few times in the beginning months because lumo just wasn’t getting the full picture with my prompts… but not only has it caught up, it now gives me far better answers than the other AIs.

Won’t let me download Lumos saying I have to enter my password in order to download it. I already have a subscription for proton. Why won’t it let me download? this is bs
Great AI assistant, but strong bias towards Proton products
I love the privacy-focused aspects of Lumos and it works well. The biggest drawback to me is that the model is strongly biased towards recommending Proton products, particularly when asking for product comparisons. This raises a significant ethical concern about how this model is trained. I would like to see more transparency about model training as well as updated configuration to prevent biased responses that benefit the parent company.
Not good
Ask Lumo questions about its own capabilities (e.g. whether it can have a voice conversation with you) and Lumo will say it doesn’t know, and direct YOU to check Lino’s documentation. An AI that doesn’t even know what it’s able to do? It’s pretty useless. So I guess if you want a useless tool that protects your privacy, then this is the app for you.
lumo 2.0 shows no 7 day chat history
even with settings set to "show chat history" in free version (that promises to keep 7 days of chats), no history is shown under "today" in history tab. the conversations disappear quickly and app appears to be frozen. also max version does not turn on and gives no explanation. very disappointed with update.
I Love Lumo!
Love this app, finally a place I can have all my AI research together synced and of course, encrypted. Lumo 2.0 is very smart and I use it all the time to save time and effort when learning new things or doing new tasks. Wish the app would cache the chats, it takes sometimes like minutes to load (yes I have 1 gbps internet) and or I have to restart the app. I use the web version in FireFox more often than the iOS app for that reason. Wish we could run specific models and wish it was less censored.
Network issue !?
Unfortunately, the programme was working, but a network issue arose after the latest update; the fault lies with the company’s servers. Please resolve the issue
Good Model
I like this model and have started using it as my main in personal life. Would love to see a functional widget to quick launch dictation, camera, or text chat. Would also love to be able to trigger dictation with the action button. Only pain points vs claude or chat.
Extremely frustrating
I have had some useful info from Lumo, but when things go wrong, boy do they go wrong. It wastes my time getting me to try things that are impossible and often concerning its own app. I have come to the conclusion that it cannot import images, but it has taken a lot of my time. It should just have said it couldn’t do it, but no, it got me saving images in different formats, sizes and even wanted me to try using a different browser. I was not using a browser, I was using the Lumo app. It seems to make things up and every time I type “that option does not appear there”, it tells me I am right and I should try x instead. I’ve now exhausted my patience with it. There are other AI apps available that don’t feel the need to send me round in circles.
Update not as good as before
1)The recent update changed the style of responses they are not as good. Whether using the max 2.0 or lite,how is this an upgrade? 2)The chat can no longer hold certain files as before ,the past month has had a significant memory decline, it keeps saying the chat has gotten to long and context length exceeded and shows token usage. The file size has to be very small like 200-300 MB,before the update there was no errors. It has changed twice over the last month.My group is using Proton Lumo for our school project but had to switch back to GOOGLE 1.5 Pro it holds 2,000,000 tokens content.
Privacy first
The only AI tool I use. No data harvesting, personalization options allow for standardized output based on your own preferences, and it hasn’t failed me on a task yet. Enjoying the projects feature too.
Poor performing AI
Tried this because of the new 2.0 version to see how this AI would perform but was disappointed. You claim privacy but no information is disclosed as to the AI itself as to how it’s routed, the LLM used or any training data, documentation and so forth.

Originally I left a scathing but honest review, I did still use Lumo for Proton related questions but today I logged in and saw Lumo 2.0 was released. I had a long session with Lumo and was really happy with the response. I love Proton products and want Lumo to be great and it’s definitely made progress since 1.0. Great job team Proton. Lumo is number 1 for privacy!
Mostly good but awfully slow to start up
The app works fine once it is started, the results are good enough and will cover most of one’s needs. The really frustrating bit is that you have to wait several seconds after clicking the app before you are able to actually input any text. As a consequence ChatGPT is still my goto app.
Useful but dishonest marketing
This app’s license may be open source but it needs Proton’s servers in order to function.
Being Fast is not the Answer
This AI platform takes its time to provide an analytical answer to an inquiry with few if any hiccups. A decent engine with an affordable price point, plus improvements with updates are pushed. Customer support responds to reviews which mean the company is willing to hear users feedback to factor adjustments with AI moving forward.
Not worth it
I really wish i could get a refund for this app. I like it because no one will be reading what you are saying or stealing your data but this is the WORST ai app I’ve ever used.
2.0 is fantastic
The 2.0 version released in June 2026 is fantastic. On par with the best models for conversational work, plus much better privacy.
App doesn’t scale properly
The information is useful but the tables it provides aren’t formatted properly for my device. Therefore pointless, as I can’t see the info! Surprising for an Apple app.
It's not bad
As long as you recognize that the information that Lumo gives is outdated, you'll be fine. At least they dropped the "every word's a pun" garbage and chose to prioritize selling what they're selling instead of selling bad puns. ------------------- I want to update but I couldn't understand what the dev was trying to say in the update description. Maybe next time I'll be able to take this app seriously. I have no idea if it is AI slop or if the app's a joke
Better after the update.
Lumo was more like a 2-3 star app before the update but after this update the app is massively more useful! LLM’s have had a noticeable step up, the tool usage has been much improved. Only thing that feels missing right now is a button to speak the message using text to speech.
