Doesn’t Load!
Proton mail stopped working both in my Firefox browser on my laptop AND with the app (even before I just updated my most recent mail was from May, 3.5mi ago). Hot garbage.

ALL SERVICES BLACKOUT
ITS BEEN well over 10+ hrs of not being able to check mail ; verify 2FA transactions, important emails etc you legit are placing me in a bad predicament moving from Gmail I did so assuming you guys would be the more reliable and resourceful pick but this that is going on is terrible
Newer version is glitchy
I love the privacy and security of Protonmail! It's great having an email platform that is not creating a profile about me for marketing purposes or trying to spy on me. I also like that it does a better job than other email services at protecting me from spam, fisching and cyber threats. When I first got the app on my cell phone, it was very convenient, since it allowed me to check my email on the go. I could switch easily from my paid account and my free account whenever I got notifications of emails from one or the other. Unfortunately, Proton seems to be trying to be like other email providers– especially Gmail. I left Gmail because it was so invasive and was trying to do my thinking for me, categorizing my mail and other annoying things. Now Protonmail is doing the same thing. They have even added an AI assistant, which I HATE! The last couple of updates of the program actually made it very glitchy. It kicked out one of my accounts from the app, so I can't sign into it anymore. And I keep having to do these stupid puzzles whenever I try to log back into it. This week the service actually had some sort of network-wide failure, so I couldn't check my email at all for several hours. I wish I could reset the app to the way it was before.
Love Love Love Proton
Easily the one company I hold the highest level of trust with. Been using their VPN for years (and I’m not one to pay for subscriptions). Mail has been something I’ve used much less but always for the highly sensitive things. Great app, great services, amazing company. Until Switzerland agrees to bend over on their privacy laws, Proton is the cats pajamas for all of your needs. **update: forgot to mention that the ability to change the app icon to something more inconspicuous is a great feature. But the name should either change with it to match the photo, just be changed to “Proton” (or something), or allow users to create a custom name. Otherwise a calculator app with the name “proton mail” draws more attention than the regular icon.
Slow and Clunky
Had to stop using because it was so slow. I recently had to sign in to Visible but never could receive a verification email before it expired. Appalling.
Great
Would like to see a true dark mode for the web app (where email content field is not bright white).
Poor code quality
How many times does a paying customer have to turn off Proton’s signature line after updating? Seriously. Repeatedly calling it a bug or code regression after a while suggests simply Proton can’t manage creating quality code. If that’s the case, then it means the privacy and security promises Proton makes might not be so airtight.
Can’t log in
Updated and now I try to log in, says something is wrong try again. So now I can’t log in. Also all my passwords aren’t working says something error json. Also I try to get email sent to it and not sending to my mailbox pass mail. So idk what wrong but mobile hasn’t been work g for me lately.!
A simplified alternative
Trying this out as an alternative to my other cluttered email. So far, so good.
Servers Down
Servers have been down for quite some time. Especially if the issue is a "cooling failure." Or were they hacked?
Great mail, Two Small Improvements
I’ve been a longtime Proton Mail user and overall I really like it. there are two small improvements I think would make the experience noticeably better. 1. Add a discreet mail icon The “Discreet app icon” feature is a great idea, but the current alternatives are Weather, Notes, and Calculator. It would be much more useful to have an actual discreet mail icon as an option, similar to the Apple Mail icon. I’d prefer to keep the app looking like a mail app rather than disguising it as a completely different type of app. Apple mail icon would be perfect disguise. 2. Make “Sync with system” the default on the web version When opening Proton Mail in a new/private browser tab for the first time, it defaults to Light mode even when the computer is already using Dark mode. You can manually switch it to “Auto-Sync with system,” but I think that should simply be the default behavior. This is especially noticeable when I log in through a private window at night while my computer is already in Dark mode. It’s a small detail, but having Proton auto follow the system appearance would make the experience feel much more seamless. These are both relatively small changes, but they would make an already excellent service noticeably better.
Leave out the AI
Don’t you hate when you open your email and have to click click click clear a bunch of dickover messages informing you that AI features have been enabled without consent? I do! I hate it! Leave that google nonsense at the curb or I’ll find a new email service to pay for.
Black screen
Have updated and reinstalled App and when I open App I get a black screen. Rated 3 stars as when it worked it was good
Less spam
If nothing else, the spam level is less than within any other app I’ve tried so far.
Won’t load
App will not load after latest update.
After a year and updates
I was upset because the app use to send some data that was tracking your connection but not anymore. After a year on the basic plan it was a good investment. I have seen the changes to the app and it has not sent any data that exposes the connection. That is without a vpn so it may have but not recently. I have one email address left to create on my tier and decided to re-review it the app again. I’m having a better experience now and it is getting better. Love the pure email experience with no account sync even if it asks to link with my google account. If you don’t want to use or invest in the apple, google, and email sync then you should have this app. With games services linking more and more this app will help it stop. Just be aware you lose your account you lose the email but there are enough recovery options to avoid it. Thanks for removing the random telemetry data from the app so it can be used on my mac. Now I’m happy with this next step is replacing my social media email with a private paid version.
Continued degradation of the UI
20 Aug 2026 pt 2: Stick a fork in it folks. She's done. Used to be that the unread message count badge would fix itself after you refreshed the mailbox. No longer. Now the app badge is stuck with the wrong number of unread messages permanently. So Proton is not just ignoring bugs they are doubling down on them and making things worse. 20 Aug 2026 Why is a privacy forward app scouring my messages to needlessly categorize them??? Even better you've clobbered even more of the bottom row of the inbox list with a badge for the unread count. Who thought that was a good idea? Just show me my messages without covering them up with needless dreck. Before some genius decided that white space was more important than content the unread messages count lived out of the way. As a paying customer all I can do is beg Proton to stop updating the UI — you're making it worse with each update. Since fixing actual bugs is not a priority they could at least spend time testing their awful app on a smaller phone. It's barely usable on an iPhone SE, not because of some technical limitation just because of poor design choices. 15 Apr 2026: yep. App badge still broken. Want to see how many unread messages you have? Tough! You will get an approximation and you will like it! Did you think that the app badge would accurately reflect the number of unread messages? Tough. You will get a random number generator and you will be thankful. It's not like you pay for this service. Want privacy? Tough! We will load privacy violating icons because they're pretty and you can't turn them off because you will love them!
Overheating My Phone
Look, I love the service, but the last update has brought back some behavior that just chews through my battery and overheats my phone. It was there earlier this year, then it went away, but now it’s back. I can be using apps that melt my phone, you guys.
iPhone
Excellent. Constant updates. Devs are very astute. My best compliments!
Fake reviews
Ignore the paid reviews. This pos app barely functions. Will not open. Sent a dozen emails that never went through and are absent from my sent history. Can’t check my storage cuz that won’t load either. Avoid, all other reviews are fake
Family Sharing
The app is always improving but still need webmail for advanced features. HTML email is problematic. App store support to manage family downloads isn’t enabled on Proton apps. Would like to be able to approve/deny what kids download.
Important Features not developed
We need better and more accessible organizational features, sorting, pinning, filtering, labeling.
Unread was fine where it was
I am unfortunately not a fan of this new UI update, and I instantly opted to keep my inbox as is. Even so, there are minor but annoying permanent changes that I don’t like. Offering these as granular/customizable options would’ve been much better. It’s a small thing, but please implement top/bottom options for the Unread button placement. Not everyone uses their phone the same way and, for me, the new placement achieves the opposite of its intended effect.
Privacy at its best
Thank you
Crash on install
He’ll, first time trying to use and it crashes as soon as I try to create account.. why would anyone use it at this point.
Glad it exists
It's nice to have the option of a secure email provider that is already established enough so that its continued existence can be relied on. I know I am a freerider, but... Anyway, the one caveat specifically for this mobile app and the reason for 4 stars instead of five is that, if someone's motto is "privacy by default", then the loading of external images should be off BY DEFAULT too. And this was not the case, as I found out recently when I got an obvious phishing email, reported it as junk, the phisher followed up with another email that, this time around, landed in junk all by itself (as it should, the system learned things fast), but when I opened it (to silently gloat at them for wasting their time, I guess), all the images in the email did load and it was only then that I went into settings and saw that loading of external images was on. Some of us are in a situation where we would rather not reveal even our approximate location to people who might be phishing for stuff. Otherwise, very good UX. Thanks.
Offline mode does not work
The app does not download images in emails. I have plenty of phone space and the latest version… Spent 30 mins w their Lumo chatbot and got nowhere. In the end - no offline mode, you may lose access to you email content. Do not rely on it.
Modern design, same old lag issues
Recently tried it again and my previous review still stands. The app design is more responsive and nicer to use with better animations compared to the old app. I still have the same annoying server side issues though. For example I delete an incoming email via the long press on the notification. When I open the app later, that message is still there until I manually refresh the inbox. Same with read emails showing as unread after I’ve definitely opened them. Please focus on these bugs or delays between client side input and server responses. I think the most frustrating issue is the delay or lack of notification updates. I often have a badge of no or one message, but when I open the app, 5 seconds later it loads 3 more emails that have been on the server hours ago.
Best email service I have used.
I have used six different email services, proton is hands down the easiest to navigate. The security is my favorite feature.
Broken
The most recent update has broken the app
Why the Gmail look?
As an email service, I find Proton Mail meets/surpasses my needs. I use folders and filters to keep my inbox looking the way I want. I do not like this latest upgrade to make it look like Gmail. I do not want Proton to determine which emails are primary, social, promotions, or newsletters.
Awful search functionality
I want to like this app so badly but the search functionality is awful. It frequently fails to find emails based on keywords in the body. It is so frustrating!! The search is worse than outlook (iykyk), which is a feat in 2026. I have this account bc I prioritize security but they make it hard to justify the benefits.
Free option is very limited and there aren’t any notifications with the Apple app
The free option is very limited in options, space, etc. and there aren’t any notifications with the Apple app. Seems like basic features are missing and I’m unsure if it’s a sales tactic to make you “upgrade” or just a poorly made system.
.
.
Proton Mail is becoming more like Gmail every day.
Ever since Gmail became untrustworthy, the one thing I have learned is that we will never again be able to have a “forever“ email provider. At some point, Proton will become unusable. But I will be much better prepared to switch.
Almost ideal
Please add the option to create new contacts on the app, that’s my only feedback.
It’s a dis
I put in my email and password 27 times and finally on the 28th time it gets in there other than that it won’t let you into your account no matter how many times you put the correct password in not good
Doesn’t automatically sync email
I’ve tried for months to find the setting that enables the app to sync mail yet I still have to wait 20 or more minutes if I receive an urgent email in order for the mail to sync. Background refresh is enabled and I don’t see any other settings that might prevent it from syncing.
IS IT TRULY SAFE
My phone got locked up. Off to the phone store. All e mails needed or not. We’re fully encrypted to myself and anyone else. That’s that in a clam shell with no clam to see !
Categories
If I wanted categories, I would have set them up. This app is turning more and more into bloatware.
Can’t open forwarded emails
Proton Mail works well overall. My biggest issue is that when someone forwards an email from Outlook, it comes as an attachment that I can’t open at all (unless I was also willing to install Outlook).
Warning!
I've been using proton mail for years now, and just recently realized why I wasn't able to find things with search. The iOS application does not support searching by mail content! You read that right. This is such a basic and obvious feature that I legitimately did not even consider the possibility that it would not be implemented. The recommended solution is so hilariously inconvenient -- launch a web browser and enable the setting, then search. Why the hell would I even bother to have the App then? Are they going to ask me to open a browser and refresh every few minutes to see if I have new mail? That would be more secure than an App + push notifications too. Hopefully they'll prioritize this feature, I can guarantee a large part of the user base is not aware of this and would not have switched to proton mail if they knew.
Folders
Please eliminate the unnecessary 3 folder limit, especially for those with a proton plus account already.
Always works
Enough said
Not helpful
Needs to figure out a way to make things more streamline, and user-friendly, and to represent itself better as a Swiss born app that touts security and functionality, but mostly gets in the way and is untested and Product productive and therefore unsafe
Great company, some work left to do
I really like this company. Their customer service is excellent and they genuinely want to fix all the bugs in their system. There aren’t many left but it still feels like it’s in beta testing sometimes… overall, great though :)
App No Longer Works with VoiceOver
I’veBeen a supporter of Proton since the beginning, and accessibility has always been a bit of an issue, but this latest version of the app has made it impossible for me to use the app on my phone. I go to log in, I get my password in, and It doesn’t log me in. However I can log into their VPN with no trouble. I hope this issue can be fixed soonest.
App is Getting Worse
Ads to upgrade to paid are getting more invasive, and it’s ruining the app experience. I don’t need to see a button in my mailbox menu and at the top of my inbox to upgrade—if I choose to upgrade, trust me I’ll be able to find out how. Pushing these paid tiers throughout the app is getting annoying and spammy. Same with the mandatory ProtonMail email signature ad which one can only turn off by paying a monthly fee. I am more than okay with Proton adding and locking features behind a paid tier, but adding annoyances throughout the app for free users is a poor way to go about incentivizing people to upgrade.
