Best authenticator app

After making the switch from Google Authenticator, I have no idea why I tolerated Google for so long. Proton works well, it respects your privacy, and has better features and design. Major bonus points for having a desktop app too. I really hope Proton continues to support Authenticator long into the future. Small complaint: shorten the app name under the app icon. Just call it “Proton Auth” so that the name isn’t truncated and displayed with an ellipsis. It just looks like poor execution, which doesn’t inspire confidence in a security app.

Needs work

I like you can sync between devices with your Proton account but every time you open the app your 2fa accounts have changed position...tried on 2 different iPhones different models and 2 different iPads and those were also 2 different models and the 2fa accounts change position every single time. Ente and 2FAS are my number 1 and 2 with Proton in last place until they get their finger out! I can reproduce this time after time constantly changing positions each time I open the app...on the other Ente and 2FAS never change the position of your accounts. Tried on 2 different models of iPhone and 2 different models of iPad

Finally a clean authenticator app that doesn’t feel shady

I'd say this app deserves four stars overall. It handles the main stuff pretty solidly, and its cleaner than most security apps out there. You open it quick when you need a code, and everything looks straightforward without all the junk. No weird ads popping up or pushes to buy something extra, which is nice for a 2FA tool like this. The privacy side stands out too, especially since it’s free. That makes me more likely to suggest it to people. I think thats the part that gets it points over some others. But yeah, it doesnt quite hit five for me because it still comes off as kind of new. With these authenticator things, I worry more about trusting it long term rather than just the basic idea. Ive only used it a bit, so Im not ready to say its perfect yet. If youre already set up with something like Apple Passwords that works right into your phone, switching might not even cross your mind. Stability matters a ton here, since even tiny glitches could mess up access to accounts. Proton has patched some starting bugs, which shows they care, but it also reminds me the apps still growing up. I might be oversimplifying, but that maturing process feels real. I plan to stick with it myself, mainly because its simple and privacy oriented without any ad nonsense. It seems solid enough for now, though not totally flawless. Close to being really great, I guess.

Backup issues

This morning I got this message when using the app “iCloud backup is no longer available- Your 2FA codes are safe. Due to reliability issues with Apple's iCloud, we've switched to the new backup - works with any drive app including Proton Drive, Dropbox, iCloud and more”. It would appear from my settings it’s no longer backing up to iCloud. The message however suggests iCloud is still an option. A circular message, it would seem. Needs work.

Good but with serious flaw

This is a really nice Authenticator app, especially since it can sync with a desktop version in multiple ways. Not many Authenticators do that. The problem with this Authenticator is that it is too easy accidentally delete an account from your list with an accidental swipe. There is no need to for such a simple method of deletion on an Authenticator. It is not like you delete multiple items per day like email. The delete function should be very deliberate and have a confirmation step. Fix that and this would be about the best Authenticator currently available.

appalling system performance

As much as I love Proton’s other products (seriously top tier VPN and Mail services), trying to scroll through the list of codes stutters the whole app (M1 MacBook Air). There’s more than enough power on this system to scroll through some text and images. Back to ente auth I go then.

This app was amazing, but they removed free iCloud syncing which automatically kept all my codes up to date across all my devices (including Windows with iCloud installed). Best Authenticator App

This has been the best Authenticator app that I’ve personally used (and I’ve used several). Works very well for everything you can ask for with this kind of app and I love the peace of mind it brings with knowing they’re not harvesting unnecessary personal data. I’m not a fan of the fact that the encryption keys for windows OS desktop app is stored locally…defeats the purpose in my eyes for privacy and security, hoping that’s updated in the future. I also am hopeful for it to fully integrate/sync with proton pass eventually if you choose to opt into that. I’d recommend the use of this app to anyone.

Bug with biometric lock

Select "Biometric lock" in the settings. Now when you open the app on a device which requires touch ID (iPad Air M3) you need to touch the sensor on the device in order to open the app. However, if your finger(s) you use for authentication is injured, or you select "Cancel" in the touch ID popup, you will not be able to use the app any more. The touch ID popup will keep coming up and it will never be dismissed. As a result, you can't even swipe the app to the background, which will render you entire device unusable unless you shut it down. Normally if touch ID fails the third time, the system presents entering your device code. But this option is not presented if touch ID fails, so you are cooked. This is stupid. In order to have biometrics enabled on your device, you have to have a code as well. So why lock people out of the app and their device if touch ID fails, and in those cases just present the code entry option.

Looks nice but a couple of functional flaws

Update: Now supports various sorting options. Nice. +1 star The interface looks decent; import worked well; synching is working; BUT import created a few duplicates (not present in the source data); therefore there is no duplicate detection: and the display is ordered by time created, apparently—no way to sort by account or provider name, which would seem to be a most basic feature. Finally, there is no Export function: what’s labeled “Export” in setting is just a Proton-specific backup file, quite insecure. Room for improvement.

The app does more or less what you need & let me get off an alternate product. It would benefit from a few more refinements. Suggestions. - Folders for keys to be grouped. Please. Does not save codes. BEWARE

I am a huge fan of Proton, and finding out they have an Authenticator I immediately jumped on board. And it would be good: if it actually kept the codes. On all platforms (for me, iOS and Mac) the codes are deleted constantly. Sometimes immediately while in the app, I’ll open the settings page and they’re all gone, as if I had just installed the app. I have to REIMPORT THEM EVERY TIME I need a code. Absurd. Please fix this, luckily I backed the codes up before deleting Google Authenticator, otherwise you would have lost me access to everything. Don’t bother collecting troubleshooting data, happening on multiple platforms means there’s internal problems. Check your code. Well. Very well.

Proton Finally Got It Right

I spent a long time looking for a company that could build a secure, easy-to-use authenticator app, and Proton absolutely nailed it. Okta looks polished and offers push notifications like Duo, but switching phones is more of a hassle than it should be. Google Authenticator does not give me the same easy access across all my devices that Proton does, which is a huge advantage for Proton. Apple Passwords is excellent when biometrics are involved and works well for OTPs, but when it comes to accessing and managing OTP codes, Proton Authenticator is simply easier and more convenient to use. It is simple, secure, and straightforward — exactly what I wanted.

Expected Proton quality is way off mark

As an Unlimited subscriber this release falls way short of the expectations. I guess it does the job but the UI is horrible and weirdly misaligned with the rest of Proton’s design language, no encrypted exports, no way of reordering entries (let me do alphabetical!) and no pinning to the top. I’d also like for entries to be waaaay more compact so it fits more in a single screen and it’s easier to read, and to be able to tag entries (see Ente Auth). C’mon, Proton!
