My Go-To!
Fantastic app, I have” knocked it out out of the park” several times according to my husband. Such a great variety, I love that you can save the recipes categorically for future reference as well… thank you New York Times!
I can no longer use my 5 year old IPad to access recipes
Who was the “brilliant” person(s) in your IT department thought it was a great idea to prevent thousands of PAYING subscribers to prohibit them from accessing recipes from their 5 year old iPads?? Does he/she/they not understand tablets are the preferred device to post recipes on? I give the NYT one week to fix this issue or I cancel my PAID subscription. In all seriousness, RSQ
Don’t love new layout
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the NYT cooking app. Can’t imagine life without it to be honest. I just have to say somewhere though.. WHY?! Why did you do away with the way the platform let you toggle between the ingredients and the directions under “start cooking “ It’s why I first fell in love with this app. No more scrolling up up up and down down down.
I can no longer access the app
I am told to upgrade to the newest version, and it requires IOS 8 or higher. I do not have it, although I upgrade my iPad Pro every chance I get. So I am out now ?
Prep and cook times wildly inaccurate
For example, Pasta Alla Vodka lists a 30 minute time. I don’t know anyone that can get a pot of water boiling, chop an onion, grate Parmesan, measure vodka, measure cream, chop parsley, chop oregano, chop garlic, and measure out oil, salt, pepper, pasta in 30 minutes much less cook also. From prep start to ready to start cooking, it took me 50 minutes. And another 30 to 40 hour to cook pasta, drain, cook onion, garlic, pancetta, reduce vodka, reduce tomatoes, and reduce cream. Come on NYTimes Recipes, you’ve got a great app, great recipes, but stop with your “quick and easy meals” fiction! That’s not you.
My go to source, as a non-cook
The only unrealistic thing is the cooking times… Always plan to at least double the time required
Subscription nightmare
It’s so NYT to male unsubscribing impossible. I spent an HOUR on hold waiting for a customer service rep to tell me they could not cancel my subscription because it was through Zuora. Do not subscribe.
Good app, more options would be helpful
I use the app often and read readers’ comments to help amend recipes when needed. It would be helpful if some of our questions could be answered by Times’ cooking staff. Also I’d appreciate more healthy versions of some of the richer recipes. And I really miss being able to save recipes from other sites to the NYT Cooking app!
App no longer works on any apple devices that can’t update to iOS 18
As many others have mentioned, I used to enjoy this app and primarily used it on my iPad, but recently the app has stopped working if you don’t update it and won’t update on any device that isn’t updated to iOS 18. My iPad works perfectly but is older so it can’t update to iOS 18, making the app unusable. Not sure I’ll keep this subscription. It’s certainly not so amazing that I’d buy a new iPad when my old one’s still working fine.
My favorite resource
This app is an excellent repository of fine cooking. It’s often my first stop for a new recipe and we have many family favorites saved!
Absolute game changer
I honestly don’t know how I survived without this. I get so excited about cooking now! The content is great but also the app itself is so good and easy to use. Can search by ingredient, time, meal, etc. has made my cooking game top notch h and I’m finally enjoying cooking for my family!
This update is broken
After being told to update I keep getting looping message to update to later iPadOS which I cannot do. Zero stars…
I like it, I also think…
I really appreciate the broad spectrum of recipes. I do wish they had the a meal planning portion of the app. I use MANY apps and recipe sites and sometimes I forget where the recipe I wanted showed up. I know, I’m old, but I can’t be the tone…
Nice app
Way too expensive
Love NYT cooking but hoping for more
I use the app weekly for inspiration but would love to have more search options, this is very limited to me. I’d love to see new AI features also.
Huge inventory of recipes
You can find a recipe for anything !
Can’t use the app any more!
Since I have only IOS 17.7, and apparently can’t update to iOS 18, I can’t open the app anymore. All my saved recipes are lost. NYT cooking was one of the reasons why I subscribed to the NYtimes. Can’t imagine, why you can’t let people use the older version compatible with the older IOS anymore. You lost a customer.
Good ideas, but don’t trust details
The NYT app delivers lots of good meal ideas, but the recipes are not always as flavorful as promised, and the time estimates are wildly off. Read the notes for adjustments, and consider doubling the most flavorful elements. Pasta dishes in particular tend to be bland - reducing the pasta by half often yields a good flavor level.
Stopped working on iOS 17.7.11tablet
Tells me to DL the latest compatible version… Which doesn’t work either😬 Catch 22 No iOS update available. What to do?…
Some questionable instructions
I truly enjoy reading the recipes, but if I wasn’t a cook and understood methods there would have been more than one failure. For instance, the blender chocolate mousse recipe said to beat the heavy cream for 5 minutes. It would be butter by that time. The cashew brittle said to boil without a candy thermometer for 8-10 minutes. That length of time brought it to less than a soft ball stage. A little more editing is in order.
Fantastic
Have been making these recipes once or twice a week for three years and have never had a mediocre one yet. Excellent collection of recipes, including quick and easy ones, always new and fresh, and easy to use app. It’s just fantastic.
Issues with Latest Update
Latest Cooking app update requires I buy a new I-Pad to download. Really? I would understand if it was a gaming app but a data base app that make my tablet obsolete. So much for sustainable design. Shame on you NY Times. Why don’t you try again. C
Useful and Fun
A helpful app for finding new recipes and keeping dinner time from slouching into repetitive boredom. The recipe box keeps things organized and the ability to keep personal notes puts this app a big notch above simply using blogger recipes. The search function is accurate and a big time saver. I wish the recipes and contributors had more variety. I also wish the recipes were, in general, more delicious. I was a longtime subscriber of Fine Cooking, and their recipes were consistently more delicious and varied.
Excluded!
Now the app requires iOS 18+ I can no longer access it on my older iPad. Unless that changes, I will have to unsubscribe. Shame as it’s a great app.
Good app as far as it goes
but wish I could add recipes from other sources to the app’s Recipe Box
Just the greatest
Great, easy to follow recipes with outstanding results. My go-to source for quick dinners! Bravo!
Have to keep logging in
If by any chance you have to search and go back you have to login in. And it cost US dollars to take advantage of recipes. 😢
My go to for kitchen ideas
For me it's like what The Joy of Cooking was to my mother, a quite reliable go-to but with more creativity. The Most Helpful comments from readers are a must see when a dish is new to me and often has useful variation ideas.
New style distasteful
I used to love scrolling through this app finding new recipes , (and cooking them of course), but the new version has moving videos, and they're ugly and off putting. It used to be where I went to take the edge off the news, but no way now.
Advertising with Recipes!
It’s all the good recipes, but the amount of “shop ingredients …” and ads I’m not sure what I’ve actually paid for. Ads are at least not as junky as News+.
Wonderful Resource
A wonderful resource with innovative and yummy recipes!
Won’t run on iOS 16.7.16
I really liked this app but now it won’t run on my iPhone. Unfortunately my phone can’t upgrade past 16.7.16 and the NYT Recipe app recently upgraded and is now not backwards compatible.
Metric…
Please offer metric measurements! No idea about cup measurements in particular..
Font size!
This isa good app, with a big fail: lack of ability to adjust font size for those of us with less than perfect eyesight. This should be an easy thing to do.
Put off by imperial measurements
There’s a great variety of delicious looking recipes, but having to manually convert from the US units (seriously, a ”cup”?) puts a barrier to entry. It shouldn’t be on those creating the recipes to amend, this is something the app itself should be able to do. Put a toggle, and yes fine have a warning saying ”measurements and units were automatically converted, please double check if unsure”. Then it becomes useful for a non-US audience.
Loving the recipes
While for years I relied on another cooking app for my recipes, I was introduced to NYT cooking through a family friend. Whenever she came over for dinner she always contributed some amazing dish that she made from recipes found here. As a means to have new options, I finally signed up for a subscription. I can say I am not disappointed. I have found some new amazing recipes and so many new things I want to try.
High data usage
This app used 22gb in the background over a few hours, costing me over $50 in data overage charges.
Great recipes, poor experience
The search functionality is really limited and the meta data connected to the recipes isn’t great meaning it’s difficult to find a relevant recipe.
Why no option for metric measurements
Nice app and brilliant recipes, but the lack of metric conversions is a pain for non-US users. Yes, I can convert separately but it’s a pain. This would be relatively easy to fix and would help open app to much wider audience.
The app is SO BUGGY!
Freezes constantly. Have to close app and restart almost anytime you from section to section. Recipes are great. App is as mediocre as a fast food burger.
It’s the only online cookbook I need
I have a library of cookbooks off my kitchen covering every cuisine and time period ( including a WW II one for rationing…it may come in handy again). But my go-to source for cooking is the NYTIMES cooking app. The like minded readers offer wonderful critiques, suggestions, and tales that I’ve come to rely on. Well done, you
Update.
Asks to press update. Never works. What the heck. Says requires 18.7 Mac My latest update is 17.7. It’s a fairly new iPad. Cmon. Not nice of your app
Useful for ideas
I’m not v interested in cooking so this gives me a lot of ideas especially for veggie food. I like having own library of recipes and being able to organise them into subjects separate from partner who uses the app too as part of NYT sub.
Measurements units
I'm general I'm a decent cook living and raised in Europe .. Where kg grams or cups are used predominantly . So I got 3-4 NYT recipes quite wrong because the conversion did not work out well for me. While EU is in your target areas, itbwould be preferred you could give us a choice on measurement unit and prepare properly your delicious recipes ...I hope it makes sense ? Thanks
Nice recipes, but lack of European measures a real hassle
I’ve tried a few of them, and the variety is great, but I keep being interrupted by having to calculate European measurements. It would be useful to put them in the recipes after the US ones. The results are delicious.
Great recipes!!
I have so many NYT recipes that I just love…like their Turkey Burgers! They taste phenomenally good, are actually quite simple to make and healthy at the same time! That’s just one example…I love this app!
Can’t update because my tablet is v.17
Although I subscribe to the NYT, I am no longer able to see the recipes because my iPad doesn’t support the v.18 update this app needs. Any solutions for this?
Killing App
Yes, the NYT cooking app will kill you. Pages load themselves unbidden. Recipes disappear. Unnavigable dead ends you don’t want appear. Oh dear
Metric?
The recipes are excellent however it would be excellent if they offered a quick button to switch to metric measurements as at the moment, it requires me to look up the measurements then swap to another app to convert them. Frustrating!
Provide metric system as option for ingredients, degrees etc
The recipes are good but the ingredients and other instructions are too US centric to offer it in Europe. We use the metric system over here, guys! There was apparently a recent change that grams information are also provided. That is a step forward. But degrees are still only in Fahrenheit and not in Celsius. Also sometimes it’s missing if temperature is supposed to be fan assisted or not (which every other recipe in Europe will tell you). Now, I know that a publisher like the NYT will be America-centric obviously but to appeal to an international audience it would be good to provide other options for instructions. Of course I can convert everything - which is what I do if I cook something from NYT cooking - but it puts you off because it’s too inconvenient to do it all the time.
