Love love love!
This app has me even more excited to use my cookbook library then ever before! With so many recipes popping up that I may have forgotten about its pure inspiration every time I open up the app!
Some apps should not be subscription based — Too greedy
It’s a good concept, I’m in the middle of cataloging my own cook books on Notion and it’s such a tedious process. I would happily purchase this app for a $5-10 one time fee but no way a monthly subscription. You could have had my money but got too greedy.
Love it! But…
I really love this concept. And it’s a great looking app. Super intuitive. The cost though…woof. I would pay a flat fee, but this cost ongoing, it’s a bit much. Hopefully this will change in the future!
Monthly fee
A one time fee would be easier to manage. Paying a subscription for copyrighted material I already own? The convenience does not outweigh the price. Offer a “ lifetime” one payment option.
Used to be better
The Home Screen used to give you a varied suggestion of recipes from books you owned which i really liked. Now they’ve changed it to turn it into another form of social media where it just ends up plastered with “community” (aka strangers) recipes. You get less varied recipes/cook books and it’s really not what I subscribed for. It still gets 3 stars because the ingredient search function across books is really useful but I hope they implement a feature that allows you to opt out the community/social part & return to the previous Home Screen.
Excellent
Saves browsing looking for recipes. Gets you using your cookbooks and cooking new dishes.
Free version not working
I downloaded it to test if buying a subscription is worth it. It seemed fine but at some point I started getting pop ups every time I wanted to use any of my recipes saying that I need to pay - I have not added more books than the free version allows and it just happened out of nowhere locking me out of the app :( can’t do anything without it showing up and while trying to turn it off it just goes back to main page.
Q about subscription
Hi! Will I loose access to my books library if I don’t renew the annual subscription?
disappointing
i have seen a lot of press about this and it seemed like a great tool i was only really going to use the cataloging feature so i was disappointed when you was only allowed 5 books before having to subscribe it just seemed silly to me and i don’t think its worth paying just for the privilege to catalog more books maybe this just isn’t the app i was looking for.
Does scan well at all on iPhone 15 pro max
Does scan well at all on iPhone 15 pro max. It shows es the wrong lens I think. And the search for ingredient is not finding much :( £40 is too much
We love this app
This apps unlocks the power of our 90 odd cookbooks. We love how we can search by ingredients. No more flipping through indexes or leafing through cookbooks with no indexes. We have started using most of our cookbooks again. We wish it was offered at a more affordable price point. We think it is overpriced; however now that we have it we definitely use it multiple times every week.
Subscription/Rental
I absolutely refuse to rent software, especially at $50/year. They lost me during the sign up process when they asked which rental plan I wanted. Apple really needs to start saying which apps are purchase and which are subscription based. Could be a cool app otherwise. The FOK recipe app was $2 for a lifetime (purchase!) and they continuously add new recipes and allow you to search by ingredients.
Didn’t get it
It’s anounced like an app that will help you to classify your recipes, but I scanned 3 barcodes and then nothing happened. Requested index then, but naver happened. Is one of those app that sound like a good idea but with very poor implementation.
Limited use
I tried this and most of my recipe books weren’t in the index. There’s also no category browsing, like any standard table of contents, it’s just search by ingredient. Also, the app only contains the ingredients, it doesn’t include the method; now, there may well be good copyright reasons for that, but the point is if you think this app will replace your recipe books in the kitchen, it won’t. It’s just a search engine for some of your books.
Fantastic app for home chefs
This is an amazing app and has finally helped me organise my huge cookbook collection. Now I’m making meals I wouldn’t have necessarily noticed before, and I love that they’re adding new features like shopping lists and meal plans. I hope one of the features they can add one day is custom books or foreign books!
Awful app
I wanted to love this and the premise is good however there are hardly any books indexed. I tried 10 different books and none of them were indexed. The majority of my library is “Taste of Home” cookbooks, and I didn’t find one that was in there. This should not have been released until more books were indexed. Very disappointing.
Meh
Cool concept. Search your cookbooks based on title or ingredients. But still need to get out your cookbook for quantities and method. Personally wouldn’t pay a $60 annual subscription for this service. Probably would pay a smaller one off price though.
Great idea but library lacking
Downloaded this app after seeing it advertised, what a great idea! Sadly a lot of my books weren’t on the app at all, and many of the ones that were had not been indexed (which entirely defeats the point of the app, isn’t the point to pay for the index???). After 5 scans it prompted me to subscribe, but having had almost half my collection missing from the app there’s no incentive for me to subscribe. For any value for money the library needs to be extended much wider - many of my books are very popular books. For now I’ve loaded the 5 books I rarely look at and will see how I get on with those
Love this app
If you have a bit of a cookery book addiction this is the app for you. It’s brilliant for finding recipes even from some older, more obscure books and means you get to know and use your books rather than ending up googling second rate recipes. I’ve been using it all the time since I downloaded it. It’s like receiving an exciting new cookery book in the post every day and actually using it.
Misleading!! You have to pay for it
Nowhere does it mention that you have to pay for this app until it asks you to create an account. Deleted my account immediately.
Seems like a great idea but
The cost is way to high, I already own the books so why would I pay a monthly cost to get access to books I already have. A one time fee sure but a subscription na
Great idea, massively overpriced
It’s a cool idea, I would use my books more and would absolutely pay a small convenience fee. But an ongoing $60 subscription is way too much for searching content.
Love this
A fabulous app, a way to organise the recipes I want to cook from my books and track what I’ve cooked with a self review. I usually don’t pay for apps but I couldn’t not have this. With so many cookbooks and my eye on many more this is invaluable.
Rent your own books.
Let me get this straight - you would like me to rent my books from you. Books I already own. Um…no thanks, I have already parted with the money for these.
Easy to use
It’s quite easy to use, and simple- which I like. It was based from the EatYourBooks website. On the site , you can view a list of recipes in a potential book , eg on kindle, before buying it. Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have this function. Perhaps this can be incorporated? It’s much faster than the website too 👍🏼
A treasure for the cook with too many cookbooks
This app fills a unique niche: it’s for the cook who owns too many cookbooks. It makes it easy to search through your personal collection of physical and digital cookbooks looking for recipes, ideas about using ingredients and the like. If you just have a handful of cookbooks, you don’t need it. But if you’ve bought a number of cookbooks over the years and you’ve added them to the Eat your Books site, this app makes it really easy to search. Is it perfect? No. But I don’t know of anything else like it. And it’s so useful. Yes, the app costs money. Programming takes time. Updating programs like this one takes time. But think of it this way: For a relatively small cost, you can restore the usefulness of those cookbooks that you bought over the years. You’ll save yourself time. Rediscoveries await.
Great idea but poor execution
I downloaded the app after seeing so many ads for it and it sounded so appealing. Unfortunately the book I have downloaded (rather popular ones) were not referenced yet and therefore the app is useless
So glad I found this app
I've long struggled with a way to effectively search my cookery book collection, so this is a game changer. It’s really easy to use, especially with the barcode scanner - amazed that even my most obscure titles are indexed. I’m already planning next week's menu using books that I wouldn't normally consider. And justification (not that I need it) for the shelf space!
Great Idea But…
I really like this concept but unfortunately it doesn’t deliver on search functionality. Only about half my recipe books could be found. Of those, that it did find, I tested searching for recipes I know are in my books, but it did not return any results even when being very specific or more vague on ingredients. Too bad.
Take my ******* money now!
I LOATHE subscription apps but I’m going make an exception for this one if it goes like I think it’s going to. I invented this app YEARS ago, unfortunately I’m not an app developer so it just stayed in my head until it popped up on my instagram feed yesterday. I’ve spent a couple of hours scanning my cookery books ( 88 ) a few had to be searched for by name rather than scanning but I suspect that’s my phone problem and not app and even so it was super easy to do. I only had a couple of books not listed and they were like Marks and Spencer’s or freebies. I was surprised so many of them were there as some were old and very random. A few don’t have the recipes indexed yet so I’ve requested that, have no idea if it will work but it won’t matter anyway in the long run. I’ve already committed to making 50 recipes ( you’d think someone with 88 cookbooks could manage more but here we are ) and have high hopes that my cookery book reading will actually turn into cooking. A suggestion for the app ( and it might already be there and I’ve just not found ) would be able to tag books somehow. I have favourites in some places and the not so popular kids are hidden away a bit would be lovely to be instantly see where I’ve stashed them but that’s just me getting excited. Thank you for making this app! ❤️
Be careful!
⚠️ MISLEADING – READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING Do not be fooled by the description. Nowhere does it mention that this app requires payment to use – you only find out after you’ve signed up and created an account. By that point, you’re already locked in, and to make matters worse, there is no way to delete your account. This is completely unacceptable. The pricing should be made clear upfront, before anyone hands over their personal details. Consider yourself warned – avoid this app until they are transparent about their costs and give users the ability to remove their data.
Excellent
I’ve been using eat your books for years and am a huge fan. The app, in its first iteration, is lovely and visual and makes it easy to search through my cookbooks. I use the shopping list extensively for meal planning so hope they add that soon in an update :)
Sneaky
Asks for a bunch of info then hits you with the subscription fee. I can’t stand how everything is on a subscription model now, instead of letting you just buy it once and use it forever (I don’t mind paying for updates when I’m ready to upgrade but don’t want to pay monthly forever). And to not be upfront about the cost until after getting a bunch of information out of the user doesn’t sit well with me.
