Best Podcast Player, Period
I've been using Downcast since I carried an iPhone 4. I'm now on an iPhone 16 Pro Max and I've never found anything better. Downcast gives you the power to control exactly how podcasts play and what a playlist contains, and it does it LOCALLY ( i.e., no streaming) so you can continue to listen when you're hiking or biking in rural areas with no cell coverage. AND it does everything without the annoyance of "subscriptions". Yes, you need to learn how the options work, and you may need to read a Help page, but in return you get a player you can use across all your devices: phone, tablet, iPod, watch, and laptop. I have a "Daily" playlist I use most mornings, and a "News Only" one that lets my wife listen to the news without being bored by all the tech stuff I listen to; we both appreciate that. Keep up the good work, y'all!

Great app for holding all of my 96.8 GB’s of podcasts. Easy to use with some cool features, like being able to make a podcast list with just certain podcasts and excluding others. Having podcasts start after a set time and end after a certain time you can control, in case your podcasts don’t droll on about commercials for the 1st 5-15 minutes or the last 10 minutes. The jump skip is also a helpful feature. I am very happy with this podcast and grateful to use it every single day! I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS APP TO OTHER PEOPLE AND TWO OF MY FRIENDS STARTING USING IT AND WONT GO BACK TO THEIR OLD 🍏 PODCAST NETWORKS. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 😎⚡️🤙 Thank you!
URLs not resolving
All of a sudden all my urls stopped resolving. Everything is stuck in the download queue.
Not Bad but not Great
I find the lack of intuitive controls and the inability to perform basic function really frustrating. I am not the typical user, I want to stream my podcasts and use up all the memory space on my phone. I configure to save all and also to configure to only stream an episode. I have to delete the podcast to get all the episodes back in the library. Should not have do that.
A very accessible app
I actually didn’t think this app was around anymore. I took a chance and re-downloaded it because the Apple podcasts app is OK, but not nearly as accessible as this one. Thank you for keeping it around. I do appreciate it.
Where are all my playlists.
Updated after it crashed and had to upload again. Now ALL my podcasts lists have been deleted. So bad update bad mananger.
Still the best podcast app
Updated Review: After many many years of use (at least 12+ years) Downcast is still the best podcast app I have found. I use it almost daily. It just works, has a fantastic simple user interface, and it's highly customisable. But there are some negatives. 1. cloud sync doesn't work very well which is a big letdown if you use more than one device. 2. Playlists are rule-based only, which means you cannot arbitrarily add selected episodes to a playlist, this is a peculiar and annoying oversight given the general level of customisation the app offers - thankfully there is a workaround which is to create a playlist for locked episodes and then add episodes to the playlist by marking them as locked. 3. The app while it still appears to be supported has not had any meaningful updates for a very long time. Because of this I have changed my review from 5 stars to 4 stars. Original review from years ago (2012ish) :- After using Apple's awful podcasts app this is a million times better (Apple take note). Downcast is a joy to use. It automatically updates and downloads podcast feeds, the search is as good if not better than iTunes and you can manually enter feed urls. It's really easy and intuitive use and it has lots of configuration and customisation options should you need them. Highly recommended.
Was Good Now Meh
when I first downloaded it, it was the best option. It had a number of features, including speed control. Since it was downloaded, the quality has been lacking. Increasing freezes, skipping during playback, jumping to other podcasts, disappearing playlists, inability to export podcasts, and so many more problems. There have been no updates at all in almost 18 months. I have to wonder if it’s finally been abandoned.
Constant frustration
While I love the intuitive interface, there is one constant irritation that makes me wish I could find a better podcast app. If I join a podcast and download the back episodes the app will constantly delete them. I don’t know why, but I find myself going to listen to a pod and finding only the latest episodes available.
Super for offline podcast listening! Just one little request…
Perfect for podcast enjoyment without an internet connection! The one feature I would really like to see added are additional playback speeds, especially 0.8x, 0.85x and 0.9x, which would really help those of us learning a new language through non-English podcasts. Otherwise, super app!
Doesn’t seem supported anymore
The watch app hasn’t worked properly in a month or more. No updates in that timeframe. Time to find a new podcast app.
95% perfect; Is video supported?
I’ve been using Downcast for over a decade and it’s stood the test of time. I think I read video podcasts were supported but I sure can’t figure out how to make them work (must they be downloaded?) The are more aesthetically pleasing apps but the functionality will be lacking, in particular the Playlist feature. Some issues are related to Apple, such as the inability to perform background refreshes longer than (two?) minutes. The workaround here is to select the podcasts you want refreshed automatically and do the others manually.
Average
No way to import files from other podcast apps. It’s a bare bones podcast app that hasn’t had any updates or bug fixes in over a month.
CarPlay interface worthless.
Maybe it’s because I listen to podcasts in my car on CarPlay, but I really don’t understand the love this app gets. If I have 20 episodes I haven’t listened to in a subscribed podcast, it hands me one and I can’t even choose which one I want to listen to. The free version of PocketCasts is far more feature rich in this environment.

Not so good anymore
This use to be a good app. Lately however none of my podcasts play through to the end. Very disappointing.
Love it, but starting to show its age
My favorite podcast app, but it’s staring to crash in the background more frequently and the UI is slow after the iOS 26 update. I wish playlists had advanced Excel-like sorting. I’d love to sort a playlist by date ascending, the playtime remaining ascending.
Better But Not Great
Looking for an alternative to Apple Podcast. This app brings back some functionality that Apple has lost touch with, but was hoping for more podcast playlist settings abilities. Trying a different app now, but maybe the good days of podcasts are over.

Hi, this app requires your location to download most recent podcasts, which is annoying and not necessary. I don’t trust my personal data.

Been using this for years. Lots more features than the Apple Podcasts app and Spotify. Stable. Updated regularly. Highly recommend.
Auto skipped to the end of a series…
Just downloaded. It blows my mind that Apple Podcasts can’t do the most simple thing in the world - pick up on the last thing I was listening to. I did a search for an alternative and Downcast was the top contender. I just had my first listening experience and WTF !?! I started with the first episode of a 10 episode series. After the first episode it skipped ahead to the 10th. After some confusion and spoilers, I looked at my phone and figured it out. Dear podcast player developers- The first offering should be the last episode you were listening to and the default should be playing episodes in order.

I still love the app very much, and use it every day, but please, please, please either move to CloudKit, move the synced documents to a user-visible folder in Files so it can be pinned/Keep Downloaded, allow a choice of folder or sync protocol, or just abolish sync as a feature. I can't pretend that this isn't a significant strike any more, so I'm dropping a star. I still think it's the right choice if you only use a single device for listening, but with the advent of self-hosted options for podcatching and audiobooks, I must think about looking elsewhere. Original review … So much to love. VoiceOver friendly. Respectful of your privacy (no backend infrastructure, uses iCloud sync). Robust and featureful. Great pricing (but leave tips!), no subscription needed. Doesn't have needless gimmicks; just focuses on what's necessary and functional. It's the hi-fi of podcatcher apps. And now for the downsides, which are more than made up for by the upsides: iCloud sync is dodgy as all sin; it's easiest just to turn it off. The playlists cannot be arbitrary, so that you cannot add to or delete from them without affecting the underlying episodes, which has important implications for building a Castro-like Inbox experience. But you know what? Just get this app. You simply won't know 'til you've used it in daily life just how much joy it can give you, merely by doing what it does best. The author should be commended for what is, in my opinion, a tragically under-appreciated app. To read all the reviews on other sites, you'd think the few little slip-ups it had in the past were fatal strikes (iCloud syncing, BBC podcasts temporarily not working). In reality, this is the loadstone, the north star to which other apps should aspire. Bravo, keep it up, and fix sync!
Buggy, slow, no development
I’ve loved this app for over a decade but the current developer has other things to do I guess. Deleting a podcast episode often doesn’t work. Schedule WiFi updates of new episodes just doesn’t happen. Maybe a CarPlay widget could be created? All ideas that someone putting time into this would work on.
Approach with caution
A great app that I have used for a number of years, great headphone/earbud support and totally compatible with Car Play…but. The app has suddenly (May 2024) stopped being able to search for podcasts as the listing does not exist in the app. Waiting for a fix from the support team. Hold off until the fix is applied.
Great player
Needed a podcast player that would allow me to create playlists of downloaded pods that would automatically play the next in the list without internet. This was suggested to me. I really enjoy it and have suggested this app to many people who also enjoy it.
Please fix the bugs!
This app would be perfect if not for two major bugs: - If I delete a podcast feed (even after disabling auto-refresh on that feed), it reappears at the next download and queues up all the episodes from the deleted feed to be re-downloaded. - Manually downloaded episodes that haven’t been played yet disappear at the next download refresh. I have to lock them to prevent them from disappearing. I’ve been using this app for many years and it’s been great until recently. Super frustrating.

Worthless Search
This could be a good podcast player if they fixed its complete inability to search for podcasts, and the inexplicable delay in getting new episodes. Or, perhaps they still feel the need to treat us like children with curated and “approved” podcasts only? Can we please just stop this?

I have this app for years, paid for that and now EVERY episode has ads at beginning and in the middle of every podcast!!! Holy!!!
Good app, a little long in the tooth though
Downcast is a perfectly reliable and easy to use podcast client. I’ve been wanting to make playlists where I could group together all the podcast episodes about a certain subject in The Rest Is History and similar podcasts, where episodes about the same subject follow each other in sequence. It’s very hard to do that in Downcast. That’s not a fatal flaw, but I do consider it a flaw, and I might have to switch to another client.
Clunky and outdated
This app has fallen behind others and I can’t use it any more
Getting Pretty Buggy of Late
App has started forgetting where I am in a podcast. When I go back to an episode it starts from the beginning again. Also, CarPlay integration is SUPER-buggy. It often stays it’s playing something different to what it is. Doesn’t always start playing the next episode, fails to mod playlists. Just ugh. It’s easier to queue up on your phone and let it play that way.

Been using for years. Love the interface. Just wish there was a speed up option in between 1.25 and 1.5. Other than that, perfect.
Worthless
Waste of 3 bucks. I don't download. I stream. Making a playlist of different podcasts can't be done streaming. More frustrating than the stock app and that's sad

Not recommended
This was a good app a few years ago, but unfortunately the developer has been unable to effectively enhance it. In particular the syncing between multiple devices just doesn’t work properly. Reluctantly I’m switching to the Apple podcast app, at least until I can find a better option.
Not as good as it was a few months ago
This used to be a great podcast program but lately it’s become shockingly unresponsive when it’s downloading new podcasts. I have given them a couple of month’s to fix this but so far, no joy. It may be time to find another app. Such a shame.
10+ years😊
I’ve been using this app for 10 years plus and it does everything I needed to do just for me appreciate it
Lasted less than a week
Clunky and clumsy to use - Playlists that don’t work and just remain empty. Paid for this. Bur it lasted less than a week on my devices. Fortunately, it was not expensive otherwise I would have been asking for a refund. It’s back to Spotify for me.
Very good app. Just one request!
Great app and I think I’ve pretty much tried them all…. The only thing I miss from other apps is the ability to mark a show as played from CarPlay. At the minute it seems the only way is the skip through till you reach the end or manage the episodes from the phone directly.
Where is it?
So here I am, playing podcasts on iOS, but the latest one is too loud. I look for it on my Apple Watch to adjust the volume - but it has disappeared. I check on my watch app and confirm its absence. What’s more, it’s not in the ‘available to download’ list, either. So I go into the watch store and manage to find it with a search. Yes, it’s definitely available for Apple Watch. I click ‘Open’ but it opens in my phone. There seems to be no way to retrieve the watch app. Should I move my podcasts onto another app? Update: oh, now I get it. It’s moved on to compatibility with WatchOS 7.1 and my watch is maxed out at 6.3. Couldn’t I have retained the old version as is normal when a new version is incompatible? Seems a bit harsh just to remove it without asking!
Won’t open - almost unusable
issues - -Opening the app is a nightmare, most of the time it doesn’t load beyond the start up logo and on the rare occasion it does it takes a very long time to load. This is making me consider using an alternative app. -when trying to export podcasts it freezes on the email screen, I am unable to enter and email address or press send, I can only cancel -Downloading is extremely finicky, it seems to only work with your phone unlocked, staying on the downloads page -Search that suggests whilst typing would be great, it’s a sorely missed feature for me -UI seems a bit outdated and clunky -A grid view would be great
Straightforward, efficient, reliable
I've tried many different podcast players over the years and Downcast has been the best for me. If you want a lot of bells and whistles and if following the crowd is important to you, then this is probably not the player for you. If you want something that works reliably, I recommend Downcast.
Paid £2.99 and it doesn’t work!!
Paid £2.99 on my iphone 13 and no podcasts are accessible either under categories or search. Every screen is blank. The most annoying thing is that there is no clear way of contacting anyone about the problem. I have seen a reddit thread on this so am not the only one. Have requested money back from Apple.
Still my favourite podcast app
I have been using Downcast for years. I have recently tried a few other podcast apps, but I still come back to Downcast. I like the customer playlists I can make. Lots of configuration options.
Background downloads not working
I’ve been using this app for over 5 years and it’s great however since iOS 13 was released the downloading of podcasts in the background has stopped working to the point where you need to have the app open with the screen I’ve unlocked for downloading to happen which has become tedious to say the least
No longer downloading YouTube 'podcasts'
I chose Downcast as it was the only app I could find which could download YouTube clips, like Jonathan Pie's material, but it seems to have given up now. Bit long-winded to get an RSS feed for each one but could be done. Now they've all stopped.
