If you're looking for a podcast app, this is it
It's unbelievably, blessedly customizable, but not overly technical. The interface isn't cluttered or cumbersome. It's free but the ads aren't intrusive. It's got a massive library and the recommendations aren't promotional or otherwise irrelevant. There are no shareholders and using it doesn't fund terrible things. You don't feel forced into a subscription, either by excessive ads or by downgrades in the free experience, but Premium still has cool features I'm interested in (plus it supports the app.) Personally, I love that it doesn't try to be a social platform either. I honestly have no idea how one guy made such a perfect app in his spare time.
⌚️ Apple Watch Gold - Love it
Update: Years later, I return and try to put it on an iPad mini and there’s nothing here. It’s as if it’s just a gray screen. It’s not what it looked like years ago when I left these awesome reviews. It was deleted within two minutes. I will stay with Pocket Casts. Old reviews below. Love the dark mode. Love that it adapts to Waze speaking thru podcasts and replays the seconds that I missed. Love that it syncs episodes to watch if u want. Wish Apple 🍎 would let us play podcasts thru the watch’s speaker 🔈. Update Aug 2019: Still a Beast
2026.8.1 Playlists Fixed!
Update: Aug 28, 2026 Curated downloads are fixed and will not delete after adding to a playlist. Thank you. Old review below: This update including a “strict episode limit” that straight up deletes episodes in progress from both my device and any playlists they’re queued in. It’s now impossible to queue up arbitrary episodes in a playlist without basically disabling the limit entirely. The old system would occasionally delete queued up episodes as well, but they would at least be maintained in playlists and could be “pinned” by playing a few seconds of them, locking them from being downloaded. I’m updating this review to 1-star until this change is reverted. It completely breaks playlists and makes it impossible to manually curate episodes to listen to.
What happened???
This app was the best for years and has been ruined by the latest update. It’s glitchy, it freezes, it won’t scroll easily, and is just overall FRUSTRATING! But what really pisses me ofc is that I just paid for another year before the update and now I’m stuck with this garbage. FIX IT!!!
An unfortunate update
This is simply a buggier app after the redesign. It just feels like everything needed more time to bake.
Episode limits are sane again!
Deleting my prior review to now account for the fact that Marco listened to feedback and fixed the episode limits.
New design is not user friendly
Raising the prices while making the app buggy? Stop trying to stuff new features in just because it’s faster to develop now with AI. Good app but the new UI is confusing and takes a lot more clicks to do the same actions, compared to the old UI
Cautiously optimistic after some recent bumps (premium user)
Aug 2026: I’m glad to still be part of this big, passionate community as a premium user. I am super grateful the dev listened and pivoted so quickly after a recent major update caused some of us to lose our queued episodes and portions of our libraries. The dev has posted on reddit they’ll move more cautiously in the future when rolling out big changes. I do think some folks like me are a little weary of how the dev’s evangelism for AI tools and his trust in them is likely outpacing their actual capabilities. Hopefully more guardrails are put in place? Why am I keeping it at 4 stars? Users shouldn’t have to be in a discord or on reddit or in test flight to be able to use an app. The dev could be so much better at communicating to users within the boundaries of the app’s text and interface. Also, I’m not sure if it’s changes to voice boost or an aspect of the downloads, but some quality of the audio experience has changed. I used to be able to listen to overcast for hours each day no problem (way longer than apple podcasts) and my ears throw in the towel a lot faster now. ——— Previous review: Love the additional speed increments. Gonna stick with the classic miniplayer over the new one because I always miss words and need to go back. So glad it’s still an option!
Great app, questionable direction
It had taken me a while to get to grips with the redesign. I'd finally made my peace with it and created a number of playlists. It was working okay, and then they move the goalposts again with this new hard episode limit... It makes no sense, the previous logic was actually smarter: you decide on the limit for automatic downloads, and if you want to add more, you can. You're in control. With the new logic, whatever you set as the limit is hardcoded, and if you want to download another episode you can't unless you disable the limit entirely, which breaks automatic downloads for that episode unless you fiddle with the (already super fiddly) settings for every individual podcast before and after downloading. Who does this help? Who thought this was a good idea? If there really is a use case, why not make it an optional setting rather than breaking everybody's playlists?
Good but getting slow and bloated
I was very happy with this app for years but after several upgrades it became unbearably slow (second and a half to start scrolling) and the interface lost coherence. With impending price increases, I'm switching back to Apple's app, which is an interface fiasco but it is free and responsive.
Easy to control, non-pushy
This app has a few banner ads which you can pay to remove but it's not built to try to influence your podcast choices and that makes it better than the vast majority of other apps including the standard apple one.
Locks up on spotty WiFi
This release does not fix an ongoing problem where the app locks up and will not continue playing if you are on spotty WiFi. It will look for new episodes, even on a plane with message-only WiFi, but will hang until it (never) finishes d/l-ing. Image proof posted to Reddit and Mastodon
Audio wholesome goodness
A very good and nicely crafted podcast app with an excellent range of audio enhancement features (eg smart speed and voice boost). The recent move to strictly enforce episode limits is a step backward - I would prefer a flexible system that retains the x most recent plus any older episodes that I have downloaded. The recent introduction of transcripts is a fantastic addition, continuing a tradition of providing great features as part of the free base version of the app.

Episodes disappear
At times all downloaded content disappears until my watch is reset. The first episode plays and when completed all the other episodes disappear and you are left with nothing playable
Best Player App
This is the best podcast player I’ve ever had! And it just keeps getting better with each update. Thanks so much!
Downloads Don’t Work
There’s so much to love about this app, but ultimately, the downloads don’t work and never have. Every time I’ve gotten a new phone, I’ve had to suffer through the process of redownloading my episodes as they refuse to do so in the background. I have to keep the screen on and stay on the download queue while they take hours to download. Then the final straw this week: one of my podcasts refuses to fetch new episodes. It took a full 20 hours to be recognized in Overcast when it was available everywhere else. I tried some troubleshooting tips, including switching Sync Profiles to see if the episode showed up there (it did not) and now I’m in download hell. The app deleted all my downloads and now absolutely refuses to process the download queue no matter what I do. The only thing that works is tapping each episode individually. That is unacceptable. No amount of fancy features makes up for broken basic functionality.

Random Glitches
Using an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Recently updated and for some reason the app will delete my entire queue, sometimes while I’m listening to the first one on the list. The podcast will just cutout and then my queue of 4-5 podcasts are deleted. I then have to go back to each podcast and download the episodes and make my queue again. Sometimes the app will skip the podcast I’m listening to and skip to the next podcast in my queue. Have almost always really enjoyed using this app but these bugs/glitches that seem to happen with most updates are probably going to make switch to another app for my podcasts.
Episode Limits
Why did they change episode limits? Who was asking for this to be strictly enforced? Now I can’t use this option and either use a ton of space OR lose true extra episodes I manually downloaded. I other than that it has been great for years. Will seal out a better option now.
Auto deletion
Anyone figured out how to lock an episode so it won’t be deleted?
New update ruined app :/
I’ve recommended this app to many people before, and always loved it. I’ve even paid the premium subscription before in the past. However the recent updates have been a dealbreaker for me. The episode limits (which used to just be how many NEW episodes it would download) now apply to ALL episodes. This means that it literally won’t let you download more episodes unless you turn off the limits. For podcasts with daily episodes, this is an absolute nightmare. I had a 1-3 episode limit for these, and I could just manually pick the ones I wanted instead of filling up my storage. However that’s not possible now, and even just a few days of this update has added over 1gb to my storage. There have also been some pretty annoying changes with previous updates too. For instance, if a specific episode has custom episode art, the title is pushed over to the right. Titles without custom art are justified all the way to the left. This means you can’t easily scroll a list, because the titles are now essentially in two different columns. I totally get that it’s just one person making this, so I know that can occasionally come with hiccups, but I’m just so confused how decisions are being made for such a popular app. It feels like the developer is just making choices based on HIS own podcasts, not what others use it for. I’m pretty sure something from every new update recently has had to be rolled back or fixed, which doesn’t reflect very well on however decisions are being made. I’ve worked in tech for years, and UX/UI testing is really crucial, even for small teams of developers. There are some pretty avoidable mistakes that keep happening that it seems like would have been caught from user testing. The benefits of using the app now are outweighed by the negative, which is really disappointing. I hope this episode limit change gets rolled back because otherwise I literally won’t have the phone storage to keep listening to podcasts on this app, which feels crazy to me.
Great podcast app
Wonderful podcast app though recent unreliability has taken away from it
Forced data loss
The new version’s episode limit behavior is a no-win for anyone who used it as-intended previously — on first launch of the new version I’m forced to either delete all 100+ episodes I manually downloaded, or unilaterally wipe out all the soft limits I deliberately set per show: both are forms of data loss and there’s no option to simply retain the app’s previous behavior. I painstakingly set the per show limits so automatic downloads wouldn’t accumulate on their own but I could still manually add episodes beyond the automatic limit when I wanted; this was how this core feature was designed and telegraphed so it’s how I trusted it to work; I saw nothing wrong with that and it should have at least been retained as an option. Instead I have to choose which of my work Overcast will delete before I can use the app again. Bad experience and a betrayal of user expectations for sure.
Update: superheated my phone again Overcast is back! Running smoothly, and once again the best play
Update: My phone got VERY hot while overcast SLOOOOOOOWLY tried to download a podcast, again. It had been mostly working, but now it’s malfunctioning again. I left a scathing review a couple of weeks ago after overcast was failing in all kinds of ways, including overheating my phone and running my battery down. All that’s been fixed! The UI is running flawlessly, downloads are happening reliably, the menu button is working again, and my phone is no longer overheating. So glad overcast is back, cuz these last weeks without it have kinda sucked.
Best podcast app
Loving the updates recently especially the history and the transcript.
Strict Episode Limit & Developer Hubris
Marco, if you’re going to lean on Claude to code your app, you have enough time to make thoughtful decisions on feature roll-out. Instead, you released a strict episode limit that breaks longstanding functionality and user behavior. Your rollout was user-hostile and destructive of users’ playlists, podcast settings, and good will. You would have absolutely roasted Tim Cook for a decision like this. I’ve been an Overcast user since launch because I believed it’s best-in-class, but the negligence and hubris of this rollout resonates with the increasing out-of-touch perspective you bring to ATP.
Good buttttt
I love listening to pods and especially GZM shows like six minutes but this app takes up a lot of space on my phone
Disappointing updates
So often an update ruins my experience. The latest one deletes in progress episodes when a new episode is available (connected to my episode limits). I understand people may expect a limit to be a rigid rule but come on. Who wants the episode they are listening to randomly deleted?
Pretty useful on iPhone, not launching on Mac
UPDATE: At one time, the MacOS app launched and worked ok. Now, with latest releases, it never launches. The window opens, the spinner spins, but the app never completes launch. (Using macOS Tahoe on M2) +++++ I use this app daily on my phone. It’s always worked fine—there are quirks that annoy, but it gets the job done. Quirks include: • stopping play, removing AirPods and putting those away in case, podcast auto starts playing again, only over the phone speakers. • some pinned podcasts sometimes display at the top of the podcast list, and sometimes disappear—no idea why
Great
I switched to Overcast after the standard app was changed in super annoying ways. One thing is I don’t know what a new icon which has suddenly appeared today next to some podcast episodes. It looks like a diamond with a plus sign inside. I poked around the app and website but am unsure. I also don’t think on mobile it’s easy to see the advantages and how to subscribe.
Ruined
What used to be a great app has been junked up with premium upsells and AI features. Let me turn this stuff off.
Both simple and complete
There is little to say about Overcast, it is both simpler than other podcast apps I have tried (including Apple Podcasts, which frankly is sub par) and nevertheless nearly full featured. The basic operations are straightforward and it’s easy to configure and adapt to your listening flows. It would be perfect if it had a mechanism for catching up to old episodes alongside new ones but no other apps support that so it still stands at the top even without it.
Used to be the best, now barely usable
I have been using this app for years with no problems. However, recently the app has started slowing to a crawl, and crashes about five minutes into a podcast just about every time I use it. I tried to contact support about these problems but never heard back. If they don’t fix these problems soon I may have to find something else
Much better than spotify for podcasts
easier to organise and clear playlists. good sleep timer. if i had one qualm, it’d be that the screen auto locks when reading transcriptions. i know it’s possible to allow it to stay on, as they do on spotify, youtube etc. so i’d like to be able to read transcripts without needing to tap the screen every minute.
Just a delight to use
Just a great app for podcasts. So much better than the default Podcasts app. I love how it has improved over time and the developer is always keeping it updated and adding new features to make it better. One of my favorite features is smart speed. The podcast transcript feature is cool but I don’t really use it. Thanks for a great app!
Unusable after update
After the latest update I find the app unusably sluggish. How can I revert to the old version?
Great continuing support and development
Despite a rocky update, the app has continuously gotten improvements and updates to make the app more stable, useful and reliable
Used to be perfect…now a bust
I’ve been a huge fan and user for over a decade but it’s gotten so bad in the past several weeks that I am very VERY close to doing the painful switch of all my podcasts and settings to a different app if you don’t improve the constant crashing and glitches and inability to use it. HIGHLY FRUSTRATING!! I never wrote reviews but have had it up to here.
The best of a terrible bunch
This is the best podcast app for iPad, but that's not a particularly high bar. Why are they all so dreadful? This one at least has sort options and a play queue, which are very welcome features. But why does it start playing random episodes when it gets to the end of the queue? Why can't I just add things to the queue and have them play in the order I add them and then stop? Oh sometimes I can, then sometimes I can't. Why can't I hide played episodes? Why does it switch from "All" to "Current" when I rotate the iPad? All these seem like such basic failures it makes me think nobody who writes it actually uses it.
Best podcast app period
I’ve been using this app for many, many years and it’s consistently one of the highest quality, most consistent apps I interact with. Can’t recommend it highly enough. I listen to well over a thousand hours of podcasts every year and I have never had a single complaint about this app.
Update Issues
Every time they make unnecessary major changes to this app it breaks the app. Stop messing things up.
App works great
The app works great. The only issue I have is the subscription to support and remove ads. Give us a one off purchase option. I’m never signing up for a subscription but I’d like to remove the ads and support the app.
Once-great app feels vibe-coded and brings flaws to the fore
Per my original review, was “highly intuitive to discover, sample, subscribe to and play podcasts”, “easy on the eye” and “potentially addictive”. But seven years is a long time in tech, and bloat has since set in. Podcasting has now matured to the point where player core functionality is easy to nail down. Five tabs ought to do it: Suggested (by OvercastGPT); Subscribed; Played; Saved; Disliked. Marco (nice engaging chap with heart and head in right places) and Overcast needed a step back and refresh, but this release rather misses the mark. In recent months, various features work and then stop working - almost as though the code itself were non-deterministic, somehow…
Almost perfect
Haven’t had any issue with the app except for one thing - trying to skip forward. Pressing the forward skip button more than once seems to trigger the app to automatically take you back to the previous episode, and you have to exit out and click again on the one you actually want to listen to. Even waiting several seconds between presses doesn’t seem to stop it from happening. As my favourite podcast has 4 minutes of ads in front of it, this process can become tedious. Other than that, no problems.
Great Podcast App
This app is easy to use, constantly updated and extremely reliable! You won’t be disappointed with the intuitive interface and wonderful set of features!
Crash and Burn
This last update made the app unusable. It’s been 2 weeks, are you going to fix it or are we all going elsewhere?
The best Podcast app around - but it's not perfect
I LOVE this app. After years of dealing with the native Poscast app, this is a joy. But it still needs tweaking. Played, partially played and episodes that failed to download should be easier to see. Auto download of NEXT episode in the series rather than LATEST would make sense, as would the ability to create a playlists of ALL unplayed eps. ALSO: We need a way of RATING podcasts for the creators, as exists with Spotify and the Apple app.
Problems lately
This has been my go to podcast app for years due to great intuitive interface etc. lately however it has been freezing on startup, as if it’s temporarily offline, and even downloaded eps just won’t play without a 30 second freeze/ delay. Not sure why this has started, but it’s getting frustrating.
Widget playback bug
Playing a podcast from the widget will start playback ok, but it will not make the podcast ‘active’ in the app and receptive of Siri commands such as ‘fast forward’ or ‘next chapter’. By ‘active’ I mean the podcast with the speaker icon beside it in the app. Please fix this as I cannot use the widget anymore.
