Incredible free version
Came from pocketcasts after they started using gen AI chapters. I feel like I wasted two years using it because Castro has been much less buggy for me so far! My only feedback is that the UI feels kind of messy, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Really amazing work, thank you!!

Favorite Podcast Player, Buggy CarPlay Support
It’s still my favorite podcast player, even if I have to regularly quit the app from my phone because the CarPlay app froze or won’t play sound.
Never resumes where I left off
Castro seems to be incapable of resuming my podcasts where I left off. I listen through Car Play and whenever I try and resume a podcast, I’m back 25-30%. Very frustrating.
I’m a daily user of Castro
I’ve been using Castro for years with only a few minor issues, but recently it’s started draining my battery whenever I use it during my daily run. I’ll start with my phone at 100%, and by the time I’m finished, the battery has dropped dramatically. Today, for example, it went from 100% to 36%, with nothing else running on my phone. It’s really disappointing because I’ve enjoyed using Castro for years, but if this continues, I simply won’t be able to use it on my longer runs. I’m hoping this is a bug that can be addressed in an update soon.

The "Inbox" metaphor is a great way to triage a lot of podcast subscriptions.
Yet another rent seeking podcast app
I’d make a crack about podcast apps being super easy to squirt out, but this one wasn’t even written. The developer just bought a free app and started charging for it. Clever.
Great app, sync hates me
Update 5/27/2026: Joined the test flight but it caused issues. Since leaving, my ability to sync across devices stopped working. It’s like I’ve fallen in an Apple Passwords/Keychain hole. Using Castro’s built in tools has not solved the issue, and support hasn’t been able to provide any other updates or suggestions. Still a fantastic app. If sync moves away from keychain I’ll come back and give a shot. Original review: Been on Castro since day one. Have seen the edge of demise multiple times. What the new owner has done is nothing short of remarkable. They brought back the app from the death, provide regular updates, and finally deliver an iPad (or Mac, where I’m writing this) with working sync. A modern feature that Castro fans have waited on for years! The sync is fast and I find myself getting through so much more of my podcast queue thanks to the feature. I’m glad to say goodbye to my grandfathered because the owner has provided so much value for my $$.
Downloading Errors Recently
Made castro my default podcast player a few months back, and, until recently, it worked very well. But downloading errors have become the rule, not the exception of late. What’s more, when there’s a downloading error, the episode in question still leaves my inbox—as if it had been successfully downloaded, which it hadn’t. This means I have to manually find the show, locate the episode, and hope that it downloads this time.
Bugs Have Appeared
I have lately noticed that about 1 in 10 of my queued, downloaded programs is immediately and silently skipped. I have also been getting a lot of errors trying to download.

has become almost completely unusable
Now it’s crashing every time I add a podcast to the queue. Every morning I have about a half a dozen new episodes from three or four different podcasts. Each time I go into a different podcast new episode list it hangs up and I have to exit the app and restart and go back in to add the episode and then go on to the next, where it crashes again. I have to do this three or four times each morning to set up my queue.
Great but can’t use
Pocketcasts is constantly glitching so I’m trying to find a new player. I like Castro but the lack of automatic downloads makes it unusable for me.
DINK!!!
Does someone on your design team think that the sound of a sharp, ear piercing ‘dink!’ is a pleasant thing to put in your head every time there’s an error? Especially when that error is merely transferring from an area of wifi to 5G or vice versa? Especially since it happens several times a day and every other podcast app doesn’t freak out every time you switch connections? Why do you willingly inflict pain on your app subscribers? Why does your app feel like you hate us? Stop stabbing me in the ears, please. And tell your app not to break down in tears every time I leave a wifi area.
Very Buggy
This app is so buggy. It’s been buggy for years, so it’s not something specific to an update. New podcasts won’t load, you have to force stop the app a ton, you’ll press play and it doesn’t play and the play button disappears. Now I have to deal with the pain of transferring all my podcasts.
Beautiful app!
This app is gorgeous. Minimalism is refreshing. Doesn’t look and feel like an Android app like most others. Castro is full of customization and podcast features. You can smoothly import all of your Apple podcasts in a couple taps. Love the name too haha. Very cool and clever. The app is free to use but if you love it and want to deep dive into more features, the annual subscription won’t be annoying either. It’s incredibly reasonable unlike most premium subscriptions out there. It’s a win for me!
lots of bugs
i want this to work for me but it crashes, fails to load or play podcasts, and lags almost every time i use it - probably gonna give it up UPDATE getting worse! Lately new errors including stuttering playback and randomly going silent. What’s up?
Favorite podcast app, but has a bug!
Will randomly skip a random amount of time? Sometimes 15 minutes or some random time like that. Confirmed that I don’t have the skip intro, it’s on most longer pods.

I love this app, but as my subscriptions have grown so has their management, I’ve ended up swapping to Overcast.

Been using Castro from the beginning. It is fast, responsive to my diverse interests and pays for itself in multiples that make it an undeniable choice.

Castro tried the newest rage, which is a year- end review of your listening. But in the process, the app wiped out my current queue, which I have slowly rebuilt. Glitches like this don’t help ratings!
Big Yikes - 60% Price Increase!
Castro was seemingly sold in 2024 and it’s perhaps no surprise that there has been a subsequent price increase on the Castro Plus subscriptions. Fair enough. But when my personal 5 year+ sub rises by over 60%, that’s just plain rude. After providing some honest feedback to the “support” team, a delightful chap named Dustin kindly put me in my place. Apparently, I was “Grandfathered in on a discount for buying it a long time ago.” He then declared the price actually went …wait for it …down. “We cut the price [for] new users and almost everyone. At least 80%+ of users got a price reduction with the changes (maybe more I just don't have the numbers anymore).” Bless. Thanks Dusty. I guess I fall into the black hole with those other 20% of pensioners who are paying more. Now, you might think, “Just sign up as a new user, dude”. Alas, the price is still up by 65% - not down. You may say, “Just use the free version, buddy”. Also, alas. Unfortunately, as per other reviewers, the “free” version of Castro is, to be blunt, mere Meh. Dustin was kind enough to offer his professional - sorry, personal - opinion to longtime, loyal users like me: “People who have been using the app for so long probably value it the most, so the idea they should be paying less doesn't make a lot of sense to me.” Good on ya, Dustbin. I sure hope new users come to value the app someday. This high-flying corporate connoisseur of customer service and communications had one final piece of solid, sensible advice: “If you like Castro and want it to exist you should pay for it.” Or not. I cancelled my subscription and signed up with another podcast player. For free. Thanks Dustin.
Good, could be great.
I’ve been a Castro Premium subscriber for several years and overall I really value the app. The iPhone experience is polished, intuitive, and genuinely enjoyable to use. The triage style inbox and queue management are still among the best in the podcast space. However, the Apple Watch experience needs significant improvement. I now consume most of my podcasts during workouts using my Apple Watch, and unfortunately the Watch app does not feel reliable enough for that use case. A few recurring issues: 1. Offline download and sync reliability is inconsistent. Episodes don’t always appear on the Watch when expected, which defeats the purpose of pre-downloading for a run or gym session. 2. Playback does not automatically resume after notifications or system prompts interrupt audio. During workouts this becomes frustrating very quickly. 3. On occasion, the Watch app displays errors suggesting I need to “upgrade to premium” to access downloaded content, despite being an active Premium subscriber. That’s confusing and undermines confidence in the platform. Castro on iPhone is excellent. Castro on Apple Watch still feels unfinished. I’m staying because I like the overall product, but I really hope Watch reliability becomes a priority. For users who train and rely on Apple Watch playback, it’s not a minor feature, it’s core functionality.
No one else is even close
There was a brief dark time when Castro was not being managed, and I tried other podcast apps and none came close to what Castro offers. The queue is exactly how I want to listen to my shows.
Need to buy premium to skip intros
Don’t see why this is in premium mode podcast allow you to do this without paying for it
Fave podcast app
Can’t believe you took away the yellow icon for legacy users. One feature that would be nice is the ability to filter out played episodes. It’s very annoying to have to scroll past all the episodes I’ve listened to already to get to the next.
Trying since new owners.
EDIT: 4th June 2024. Still no iCloud sync or any sync between my daily driver iPhone and my test iPhone. Both on newest iOS and signed in on same subscription. So I have to add new podcasts that I have installed on daily driver to the test one, this feels really backward. Yes I know I can export then import but why so many steps to keep both in sync. I have noticed over the last update (beta TestFlight) that updates of a couple of shows are either not showing at all or at least delayed by few hours 3+. I checked straight away with other apps, Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast and apple always updated, pocket Casts is definitely second followed by overcast(not subscribed anymore). I’m not sure what’s happening and I really hope they get the servers sorted as I’m not liking this at all. It’s been happening a lot. Error 5002 or error 4 something as it changed really quick which I didn’t remember? Anyways please sort out as I’ve got/had high hopes for a Castro comeback…. Since the new owners this App is progressing nicely and really has helpful support. I paid for subscription and got on to the beta and I’m happy. Everything works and I really like the flow and UI. Yes there are others with similar options so that’s now the norm and others have different UI which is down to personal preference. I like another’s UI slightly more but they seem to put new things behind an extra Patreon extortionate paywall price even if you have full subscription so that’s a bit off and leaves a sour taste.yes Castro sub is lower now and in the middle of the top 3 now for cost which is a good move and the chapter selection and other tweaks come out for all subs and not behind a sub+Patreon.!!!! Overall I’ve been running this side by side with my longstanding App and it’s winning and getting better and more honest and nothing is hidden. It works with the Apple Watch independently of iPhone so no need to download then listen. Oh no it’s a solid stream and go which I love and don’t have to download podcasts filling up unnecessary space. I’m a happy bunny and glad I took the plunge and trusted the new owners to make it even better, thank you.
Love it when it works
Hands down the best when it isn’t fully broken. This is not the first time this has happened and I cannot fix it. I’m reasonably savvy. This should not be happening repeatedly on a paid app.
Very good podcast app
Castro is a very god podcasting app and is my favorite to use, even though there is a lot of competition. One feature I would request is to make it easier to add multiple episodes of a podcast from the episode search screen. Right now, you have to search, find the episode, click on the episode, queue the episode, and then repeat the above for each episode.
Completely broken by recent update
The app hasn’t been working since the update two weeks ago. It either freezes or crashes on start up.
Getting better
Since going under new owner ship, the app has improved immensely. It is now back as my primary podcast app. As some one who likes to rearrange the order I listen to shows as they come in Castro is great. My only issue is that it doesn’t support video which is about 70% of my podcasts.
iPad app please
A lot of us switched to iPad mini for most things and it’s frustrating there’s no iPad app :(
Casting to Google
It is remiss that there is no facility to cast to Google speakers on your WiFi. Pocket cast does this so it is definitely possible.
Great podcast program
A great program with a lot of cool features I really like the ability to sync between my phone and my iPad. The only thing I would like to see is the ability to export a podcast as an MP3 file. Also, I think the $25 price is a little bit high, but the program does everything that I needed to do, so it’s really worth it for me.
You went and ruined it
Prompts to upgrade for $ every time you access the app. I’m not paying a dime for an app that’s supposed to be hassle-free.
Broken suddenly and no support
They fixed it in December and it’s broken again! I very much doubt that I will continue my subscription. This was absolutely perfect! Suddenly it no longer connects to the directory. It’s not finding new episodes and the discovery page won’t load. Everything gets a time out error. No reply or acknowledgment from the support team.
Done with it.
Used this app for many years, as it has a nice UI and watch sync for offline playing - but the syncing often takes 1hr+ and the support team have been radio silent for the last 6 months.
Best podcast app around
They have had some serious problems with their servers recently but apparently they’ve just been bought out and improvements are on the way. I hope so. I tried all the other podcast apps and none of them work as well as Castro. With other apps I feel like I’m drowning in the UI just to play an episode. Castro is clean and direct and easy to use. Hope the new owners don’t mess too much with it but focus instead on improving the backend.
My favorite podcasts app
I’ve tried a TON of podcasts apps, like over a dozen. I stuck with Breaker for years, even after it was sold and development stopped, because I liked the user interface so much (and they removed the ability to export). But when I discovered Castro, i finally switched because I finally found a podcast app with a user interface i really liked that was regularly receiving updates and new features. I’ve been using it for a little over a month now and I can say without a doubt it’s extremely reliable, user-friendly, fast and works great on my car’s radio. If you’re a Breaker refugee like me, this is your replacement app, trust me. Literally only the 2nd podcast app I’ve ever used that I’ve been willing to pay for the premium upgrade version. And like I said, I’ve tried dozens.
Banner ads anti consumer
I paid for this app back in the day. They now added banner ads to even me. That is horrible.
Fantastic in general
Great app, wish it had an ipad optimised version. However as of mid November 2023 seems to have issues reaching the internet to fetch new episodes
What happened?!?!
Well this *was* very good until a recent update…..!! (sigh) Now there’s no way to quickly and easily clear down the Inbox. Back to the App Store to find a replacement then! :-(

I hope the people involved in this software are ok. Podcasts are an important media for people as the Castro team well know. Please give us an update regarding when the service will be back up and maybe if there is anything that users can do to stop this happening in the future. Peace.
The best podcast app
Look no further. I tried a bunch and this one is the best by far. Everything about this app is great, but the queue feature is everything.
No longer works
I’ve used Castro for years and it’s my favorite app bar none. However, with the last update I couldn’t navigate to a new podcast without finding what I wanted to listen to, completely closing the app, and searching to update this a second time. Trying to fix this I updated to the newest version and the app is completely broken. I can’t search, can’t see my history, can’t even play my current episode. Nothing works. The app is completely frozen in the newest version and I’m afraid I’ll have to find another podcachter after maybe eight years of swearing by this one.
Tab as - good but glitchy
The new tabs feature is a real improvement. My queue used to get overloaded and hard to manage and navigate, and the inbox was somewhat redundant. But suddenly the new navigation makes it so much easier to filter, sort and search my inbox. It’s an absolutely fantastic portal to finding the content I want to listen to But… it’s currently glitchy - “show” icons remain visible even when all the relevant episodes have been deleted, and sometimes the same “show” icon appears multiple times on screen. At the moment I’m forced to restart the app quite regularly to resolve this. Fix the glitches please, because then the app will be truly great
No obvious way to provide feedback inside the app
Can’t provide feedback inside the app: the Custom Show Phrases are broken, which is very frustrating, and this is the only place I can report this bug
Going downhill - switching to another app
I used to love Castro, and have been using it for a couple of hours each day for the last few years. I have paid for the app. Recently, some changes have really started to make this app less enjoyable to use 1. Even though I have paid for Castro, they introduced a new pricing plan which treats me like I’m a free user and nags me to pay more 2. Ads are appearing in my feed and I can’t remove them without paying more 3. I have an older phone, and the app stutters and lags quite a lot. I have tried quite a lot of other podcast apps, and Castro is the worst performing of the bunch What I loved about Castro: 1. Clean design - has just the features you need and none that you don’t 2. The inbox / queue for deciding what you’ll listen to next. It’s great to subscribe to podcasts and have them in an inbox you can then pick and choose the best ones to listen to All in all, while I still love the great things abo Castro, I’m switching to another podcast player that runs smoothly and doesn’t serve ads to paying customers.
