im interested in more privacy than google maps, and magic earth offers that👍
paid model is ridiculous
if people like your product, they’ll buy it. you don’t need to lock essential things like carplay behind a wall just to test it.
Promising navigation app
Intuitive UI, easy to navigate the app. Still some quirks like missing highway exit numbers, skewed/ stretched interstate label graphics in CarPlay. This app has come a long way since I started using it before the UI refresh. Looking forward to improvements.
Major price hike for what?
I appreciate the privacy focus of this navigation app. For its previous subscription price I could look past the shortcomings and support the developer for providing at least a privacy-focused product. However, the outdated POI database, lack of detailed business information, and laughable public transit database haven’t improved substantially over the last year-ish that I’ve subscribed to the app. If there were significant improvements in the areas I mentioned above *before* the price hike, I might have thought it was worth it. But now, I’ll go look for other options until the developer makes major improvements for charging this much.
Big price increase
Price has increased from a pound to £12.99 a year, which is just too much. £5 or so would be more reasonable.
Awesome app.
Great substitute for Waze. I prefer apps that don’t support genocide. Works well. Has all the things. Thank you. 🙏
No more free
Useless, used to be free. I’d not mind paying but all my downloaded maps are no longer available
Like it… could use a little work
Best thing that’s not Google sucking up your information. Sometimes i search for something and it thinking I’m 5000 miles away. Also, would be nice to search by voice while driving
Come on now
Despite flaws, I was trying to use Magic Earth as much as possible - I was generally using it for about 75% of my mapping needs. I have had significant issues with it choosing routes that are overtly odd or routes that are ineffective given traffic patterns. I appreciated the privacy respecting approach and an overall functional product. I was willing to pay 0.99 USD/year, but now the dev has increased the price twenty times what it previously was. Unfortunately, the product is not worth that; I’ve cancelled my subscription.
Almost had potential…
The concept is great, but the sudden 20x price increase is not, especially considering a few key issues. I used to be a subscriber but cancelled. I understand cost increases, but 20x is ridiculous. I like the route statistics showing elevation, road surface, etc. however, you must click on each item to see it. Displaying more info on larger screens would be more helpful. Issues holding it back: Maps are highly sensitive to rotating when you don’t want them to and then when you try to rotate them back, they don’t change. There’s no snapping at true north, so you have to press the tiny button to put it back. Address location isn’t the fastest. Wish there was trailer mode, but truck options are fine enough. Seems like some of these issues have been around for a while. Hopefully the developer addresses them if they want to justify the price increase…
There is no trade-off!
Five Stars just for this statement from their website: “Everything in Magic Earth is grounded in PRIVACY. There is no trade-off between using the product and protecting your identity.” As an American, I take my Fourth Ammendment Rights SERIOUSLY Apple!
Best offline turn by turn navigation app
Best out there. Hands down. Lost my support due to subscription fees.
Great - One Flaw
Perfect alternative to "big tech" apps. This is my go to, and it has everything I need. The one draw back is that is overheats the entire phone within 10 min if it's the summer and within 30 min if the car is cool. Doesn't matter if the phone is or isn't charging or where it's sitting. It's just the app. Once that's fixed, this is 5 stars.
Good map but…
I have found Magic Earth a useful tool but, in my opinion, not worth the significant subscription fee increase. I wonder whether the map previously downloaded will disappear after the renewal date.
No good for HGV
Been using this app for a week after purchasing a licence. Thought it seemed quite good for the first day. But then running it along side my TomTom with the same HGV dimensions it keeps trying to take me through weight limits as if it is ignoring the profile I had set.
Great offline map
I hardly use it at all. Got it just for emergency when I forgot to download googlemap ahead. It was free in the first year, then I paid $1/yr for past 2 yrs. It is $20/yr now. I may not renew the subscription based on how rarely I use it. Anyway, it’s a very good offline map to have (I’ve tested out in city, small town and trails) Highly recommend.
From an Android and IOS user
Due to circumstances outside of my control I have had to switch phones twice in the last few months. Their process for accessing your paid premium features on a new device absolutely sucks. You have to click a link that is supposed to email you a new code you have to activate on your new device to get the features you paid for. The big problem is both times I’ve needed to switch I’ve had to contact support because I straight up don’t get a link to my email. I’ve tried every email and alias I have. Support can’t offer any help either, they just resend the same link. Eventually when I had to switch the first time it worked after several weeks of trying. This time I had trouble again and I think I’m giving up on the app. Check the Google Play store reviews. They’re much different. They remade their entire app and started charging subscriptions for it while it was half baked, using customers as beta testers. It crashed on me every single drive no matter how long, the search sucks and the app overall still leaves a lot to be desired. They slowly started improving on the crashes but they still have a looooong way to go before the product they present actually lives up to the promises to their customers. CoMaps is under active community development and will take a while to get live traffic updates but when they do it will be a much better option for people
Great app but..
But I wish it was fully open source.
All hat, no cattle.
Good ideas, but very glitchy, inconsistent, and many of the features (like the watch version) just never worked. Felt like a beta test — definitely nowhere a finished project. They tried to run before learning to walk, and ended up on their faces.
Ehh, needs more work
Used this a couple times in town. Didnt always route me the shortest distance. There’s no CarPlay for the free option. Can’t see paying for this when there are free maps in Google or iOS
Top of the line
Perfectly work in Europe and USA..
Sucks
The map itself looks terrible, very low quality and slow to load when zooming in, and it shows the North and South poles as just two big black circles connected by a long black line going down the globe. Downloaded only because I heard that it still had Palestine and some cities in Lebanon, and from the pictures on the App Store it looked promising. Then I read the reviews and saw the app itself. Apparently it costs $20 a year when it used to cost $1 a year, and it doesn’t work right without paying. I have deleted this app now.
Good App
I tried this app when towing my caravan as you can put in the dimensions (as a truck) & it seems to be good at avoiding unsuitable roads, low bridges etc. it also works with CarPlay which is great. My only issue is the speed limit displays the ‘normal’ limit, not the limit for larger vehicles.
Not up to Par
Okay, I’ve waited over 6 months to write this review. I think that’s a fair amount of time to give to the developers. First, the extra star that Magic Earth earns is because of their privacy policy. I do think that their aim is admirable when it comes to protecting users privacy. However, the app itself is definitely not on par with the other big players, such as Apple Maps and Google maps. My biggest complaint is the lack of tangible response from the developers. I reached out to the developers with the following suggestion on September 10, 2025: “Please make the search results viewable on the map.” Their response followed on September 30, 2025: “Thank you for your feedback, I've forwarded your request to our developers.” Additionally, on September 23, 2025, I wrote the following: “Okay, let’s talk Lane Assist. From my usage of the app the Lane Assist needs at least three improvements. 1) Most important improvement, Lane Assist needs to be more predictive. The Lane Assist is unhelpful if it isn’t accounting for what the following prompt will be and how closely it will follow. Example, I’m on the freeway and Lane Assist says I can be in any lane as I pass by an exit. It then tells me I have to be in the far left lane for the next exit 300 feet ahead. At freeway speeds, that’s a blink. The earlier prompt is completely unhelpful, and even counterproductive, to the prompt that follows after it. This happens way too frequently. It’s very frustrating. 2) Lane Assist tells me to stay on the freeway nearly every time I pass an exit. I don't need Lane Assist to tell me to not take an exit. If I’m on the freeway, and my next exit isn’t for miles, I only need Lane Assist for that exit. To have it tell me to use any lane on the freeway to continue on the freeway for every exit is annoying. 3) I realize that those two things aren’t quick fixes. I imagine there’s a lot of code that has to be written for those to be sorted out. Something that would be an improvement, and probably be a lot less code, would be the option to turn off Lane Assist entirely. For navigating in my city, not having it would be better than having it the way it is currently. This really should be an option in the settings regardless. Aside from those things, there should be other options available in the settings. Being able to turn the battery indicator on/off, same for the current speed and speed limit indicators. I don’t necessarily need or want any of those things taking up screen space and should be able to turn them on/off individually. There are other improvements that could be made, but for now, the ones outlined above should be given priority.” Their response on September 25, 2025: “Thank you for your feedback. I will forward your observations to our developer team. You can show/hide battery indicator if you tap on it.” I missed the battery option toggle. That was my fault. Nonetheless, more than six months later, none of the feedback given to the developers has made its way to the end user. If this was a free app, or still at the $0.99 per year price point, then my expectations would be lower. However, the things that have changed have been an increase to $20 a year and scenic route as a routing option. For $20 a year, not only should you be taking user feedback more seriously, but you also need to be a good navigation app. There are so many little things that make the end user experience less smooth and less useful than the bigger apps like Apple or Google. For my use case, I won’t be staying with Magic Earth.
Overall okay but confusing navigation
The directions for turns are often wrong or confusing. I find myself needing to look at the map to know where to turn. NYC
Boo!
Was free to download maps then drive/walk using GPS. Now you’ll (over)pay annually to do the same. Good privacy policy.
Can’t delete app there is a bug
Don’t install there is a bug you can’t uninstall
Useless on Watch
What's the point of having the App on your watch when it still needs to run on your phone at the same time??? Apple Maps works on it's own, and a few others, but Magic Earth has to have the phone App running?! Maps could be saved to the watch, so that can't be the excuse. Make it work on the watch without having to open the App on the phone and leave it running.
No more free?!
Been a long time user of this app. I was shock when I updated it yesterday and now it force me to pay annual. No more free?! No offline maps at all?! One star. I found a new free GPS app somewhere else!
Pretty good
07/27/2026 Traffic seems to be accurate at times. Better than before. It’s getting closer to being useful. When navigating specifically in CarPlay it doesn’t show the exit number. In my area it doesn’t show the county road either just a different name that isn’t posted on any signs. Would be nice to show exit number and what’s on the sign so you can visually know your taking the right exit. The speed limit seems to have gone away. Not sure if that was on purpose or a mistake. 05/06/2026 Traffic reporting still doesn’t work in my area. Since traffic is the main reason I use navigation this app is still pretty useless. I’m a premium subscriber but won’t renew without good traffic information. 04/01/2026 Overall works well still. The biggest problem I have is there really isn’t traffic calculated into routes. If they are only using their own app crowd sourcing traffic data it won’t work as there isn’t enough users. Since this is a paid application now I would need good reliable traffic data to keep using this application. Overall it’s pretty good. Sometimes when I search for a place it will shows me other places with the same name but are not the place. Also when searching on car play the keyboard always shows so you can’t see anything except the first result which is annoying.
Great alternative
This is a solid alternative to the big navigation apps even though it’s a less mature product. The traffic data seems on par with Google and Apple. Needs a lot of improvement with the search function but it’s exciting that an app based on an open source map can get me from A to B without sacrificing a lot of convenience. I’m going to keep supporting.
Ancient maps 23+ years old
That satellite images are over 23 years old! I looked my house everyone does, and I noticed that a large oak tree had fallen in hurricane Isabelle(2003) was still standing, and a nearby road that opened in 2002 was still under construction… Don’t waste your money!
Good
Edit: They added back 2d mode, upping review. The map hides the road names when moving the map around which makes it hard to find things. It would be useful to customise how much detail is shown on the map. It is very good at finding things with search.
From $1 to $20 per year
I liked this app and was meaning to sign up for their $1 a year plan. But today for Black Friday weekend they've raised the price to $20. I wanted to support you for offline maps, but I can't at this price. Would have been nice to give people a heads up before this change.
Privacy good, awful search
The app itself is great if you know exactly where you want to go. But if you’re looking up where to go it’ll search thousands of miles away in another state.
Really good
This is a direct replacement for all those paid-for apps, but at no cost whatsoever. Has accurate traffic updates. Sensible routing options. Give it a try.
Really, A Paid Subscription?
I guess nothing can be free in todays world. You now have to pay a monthly subscription, so it’s off my phone. No reason to pay for something i get for free elsewhere.
Half baked
GUI route planning layout is ready easy to read. Sadly it is useless to navigate by public transport- I cannot click on a railway station and get it to plan a route. Instead I must click on a local shop etc. Cumbersome Layers access ( Default, Satellite, Terrain etc). Offline map mode doesn't work: Downloaded two map regions (Belgium and Gibraltar), but map data unavailable until I enabled my mobile data. Added three places in openstreetmap.org but places have not appeared in Magic Earth.
No better than the free apps
I purchased for the live satellite navigation images, I thought that would help navigate busy streets. It does not load images just a blurry green mess, also the navigation itself was not the accurate either.
Carplay
Has problem ! Cutting off the music that was playing
Great app
Been using this for a year now since buying a motorhome and it’s been great to navigate places and avoid certain narrow roads and low bridges. There is sometimes an odd glitch whereby when I get back into my car after been away in the van, you cannot close magic earth and switch to google. Seems intermittent and doesn't always happen now though since the last update. I just reboot my phone and it sorts it. I’ve been recommending this to all other motorhomers in groups on fb when I’ve seen people asking for a good app to use for navigation.
Sketchy
DO NOT TRUST THIS APP!! I was interested in trying this app as an alternative to The other big names. When I downloaded it a pop up came up and offered a 30 day free trial. I clicked the button and approved it then got charged $10!! It said FREE trial and they charged me instead!
Very Good
This is an excellent app, it works offline which is what I needed. An improvement would be the ability to search for addresses using UK postcodes.
It was good but now it’s not
This was an amazing application. He worked great. I loved everything super easily. Nice intuitive filled with features and the driving AI stuff but one day they added a subscription on top of it and it used to be free completely with no ads but now they slapped a subscription on it and I hate it now the one free map app that I found that was actually good got a paywall.
Disappointed
The app was okay but glitchy to begin with. Then they added a $1/year subscription. Not a problem, worth supporting their development. As of today, navigation is apparently broken, at least for me. I check the app store reviews here, and that's how I learn that the subscription price has been bumped up to $20/year. No warning via the app itself, or anything. The price bump might have been reasonable if it had been explained. As it is though, immediate unsubscribe and delete for me.
Version 7.9.2 update issues
Edit: After recently rating this app as 3 stars I would now like to increase this to 5 stars, this is due to the app developers listening to my comments on the iOS 15 CarPlay issue I was having. The app developers promised to sort the issue I had with version 7.9.2 and they then released a perfect update with no issues in a timely manner with version 7.9.3 Thank you to the Magic Earth Team for listening to one of their users comments and thank you also for continuing to support users of iOS 15, it is much appreciated. Previous Comments by me…. Magic Earth was an amazing app in the 7.9.1 version yesterday, however the latest update today is a disaster..!! The current vehicle speed and road speed limit info in the top left of the screen which was ultra useful, have been removed in the Carplay iOS version and replaced with a duplicated battery level icon ( there is already a phone battery level indicator on screen in CarPlay… alongside a bizarre non moving number zero 0 which doesn’t appear to change from 0… Guys this was an amazing 5 star CarPlay app yesterday and is now a total unmitigated disaster today… Please, please, please revert back to the previous version 7.9.1 with the two speed indicators in the top left of the CarPlay screen, as the latest version makes no sense at all and is a retrograde update which loses functionality.
TRY TO TRICK YOU. BE WARE
They say is $1 but they increased it to $20 without any communication. Scammy scam scam!!
Carplay
the app becomes unusable on the phone when carplay is active. The app should run on pahone as normal when its not selected on carplay. Carplay can play music where the app can open normal on phone.
LOVE the UI, but Non-functional in NYC
I think the app is laid out very logically and woukd love to use this map. I hope the developers can fix some key issues I am experiencing intermittently with offline maps: -Searching business names won’t pull up results, or will perpetually will show throbber. About 50% of the time I give up and use Apple/Google Maps. I’ll still kep trying ME first for the time being. -Searching for ferry ports pulls up routes instead of discrete locations. e.g. searching “Pier 11” results include all the ferry routes themselves instead of the port origin/destination. In general, there is no need for users to search a point in the middle of the river. -Insufficient map contrast in dark mode. Difference between water, land, streets, and the text is not dynamic enough to easily read even in a dark environment. -Needs toggle layer for public subway transit. It’s helpful to see all the trains and stations at a glance. I absolutely love some of the design choices of this app. Huge applause for adding a “mobile data” setting to toggle specific content on cell networks. I also love that my map isn’t covered in fast food chains and clothing stores before I even search for them.
Disappointed
I got this because I was told I have the option to record my drive and that this was a more privacy-based app. When you download it tells you that you don’t have to have an account, but when you try to record, the app tells you that you have you have an account. The android version is apparently free and you don’t have to have an account. Sad days.
