Could be great, but…
Prior to using this app, I have mostly used Waze and Googlemap. I decided to try out TomTom after buying the ‘Tom’ device, which I think is a very handy gadget, but requires TomTom to be installed on your phone. So two stars from me. I’ll start with the positives. It’s free to use, the layout is very clear/clean and I like some of the features. For example, if you’re going through an average zone, TomTom will show you what your average speed actually is and adjust accordingly if you slow/speed up. It’ll give you some breakdowns at the end of your journey and paired with the ‘Tom’ it’ll warn you of any speed cameras or hazards. It has shown me better routes, often finding shortcuts missed by Waze and Googlemaps. The two occasions I ignored its diversion directions, I ended up regretting it after double checking with Waze and going with that. The negatives - whilst the app looks great and works very well (when it’s working), there are problems. The biggest problem being that if you’re doing a long drive, the app will stop working. It’ll still be on your screen and still showing your speed. But it’ll stop showing you whatever the speed limit is and lose track of where you actually are, often showing you as in the middle of a field next to the road and not moving. The arrival time will not be accurate and overall it becomes useless. You can get it to work again, but only if you end the navigation and start all over again - dangerous and hopeless if you’re already speeding down a motorway. This is an absolute fail and needs fixing if anyone is to take the app seriously. (And just for clarity, both my iPhone and the app itself are fully updated). The next major issue with the app are locations themselves. Again, an absolute fail and renders the app utterly useless. Some locations simply aren’t recognised in the app. My home isn’t recognised and so I have to set the centre of my village as my ‘home’, despite being nowhere near my house. On a drive recently to a nature reserve, the app decided to take me down a farm track nowhere near the nature reserve itself. Its inability to locate locations has left me unable to rely on it and I’ve had to revert back to Waze or Googlemaps to be sure I’m going to the correct locations. When driving to a new location, I now don’t bother with TomTom and instead go for Waze, because I can’t trust TomTom to recognise the location, or take me to the correct location. Overall I actually think TomTom has a huge amount of potential. I think features on some of the other apps aren’t particularly helpful and I think TomTom has the balance just right. Showing you your speed through and average zone for example - really useful! I’d far rather use TomTom and paired with ‘Tom’, it could be absolutely brilliant. But until these major issues are fixed, it’s completely unreliable. I believe they used to charge people to use this app - how?! Please fix the app asap! Until it is fixed, I will be returning to Waze, which I can rely on to work.
The updates are the problem
I came looking for an update to cure severe problems with this app, only to find there was an update last week. That’s when the existing problems become much worse. This app is not suitable for iPhone 15 max. I’m now trying Apple Maps in desperation.

App very frequently repeats the previous message anywhere between 2-10 minutes later (e.g. you’re told to “turn left” 5 mins after you’ve already made the turn). Not so bad on motorways or known routes but awkward in a city on unknown route. Also not confident it’s choosing best route - ignored instructions on 30 min journey which google maps and car sat nav said would add 8 minutes

Who let the Devs Vibe Code?
This has gone from great to appalling. Just uninstalled after a journey, several times it decided to reroute and advise on impossible detours, e.g. change from straight on to turn right while on the junction. Other time it advised a right turn on a no right turn junction, age of the no right turn sign suggests it wasn’t new. There’s no warning of detours just updates the route, despite setting to suggest alternatives, suggest not choose them for me. Goes down small roads and narrow residential streets to shave off a few minutes, trying to out Wave, Waze for useless diversions. Back to Apple Maps until something better comes along.
It’s OK, needs improvement
Second time using this app. Leaving Waze due to political views. Heading to work and without knowing that two of the main freeways I normally use are closed down. Who knows how long but there is already construction on site. The map didn’t try to redirect me, said fwy was open. Maybe it’s due to not many people in my area using this app. That’s understandable but when I was reaching another exit, instead of providing the EXIT street name. It said the City, so I kept driving looking for the other name but it turns out, I drove past my exit. Therefore arriving late to work.
A shame, wanted to love it
Extremely laggy & delayed maps. Updated app consistently with no change.Also doesn't know all areas and places so you have to be very specific with postcode and full address.You can't deselect routes ie to avoid tolls or ulez routes. It's a very clunky app and I really tried to use it for a month but it needs a lot of work!
Almost good
Really wanted to like this, but the main feature I installed it for is broken, along with a few others. That feature is the always on speedo - I drive a KPH car in an MPH country so need to know my current speed in the correct unit - Apple Maps doesn’t show the speed at all, Waze now stupidly obscures the speed with the speed limit, and Google Maps is just spyware. This was the only other nav app I could find with an always on speedo, but unfortunately half the time it just shows as 1mph. The other big irritation is that despite telling it to use dark maps in the app’s settings, and having permanent dark mode and always use dark maps switched on in CarPlay’s settings, this app ignores all that and is blindingly bright and incredibly distracting.

The voice was very obssessed with us using the HOV lane. Obssessed. Wouldn’t shut up about it. Didn’t show lanes to use at busy highway interchanges and gave some misleading directions at times.
Good, but….
Great navigation app, but please keep the previously chosen scale for the map. Could you also keep up to date with speed limits? There have been at least 5 map updates for the UK and one road that you have marked as 50mph has been 40mph for at least 6 of those updates. My Garmin keeps the speed updates slightly better, it has taken 2 updates after the changes for it to show on their maps. The speed changes were over 3 years ago, so if Garmin can do it, why can’t you?
Offline Maps and visual need of improvement on apple car play
Great app would recommend if only if you was able download offline maps it would complete the navigation experience plus needs improvement on visual on apple carplay compare to google maps
Poor substitute for device
Too basic, not functional enough to be used as a proper sat nav. Cannot set way points or stops Google maps is much better as a phone sat nave app
Currently the best
Currently the best sat nav I’ve tested on iPhone and I’ve tested many. Easy to find any POI, so far I didn’t have issue with finding anything, good routes, and it’s showing your speed so plus for all of these. So why I gave 4 stars, it’s because the app is changing the route when you drive without asking you. And I’ve checked that option and I have it set up as manual, so it should ask me if I want to change the route but it never did and so many times the app changed it that it’s really annoying. Only option is to turn it off completely at the moment. Developers , please fix it and I’ll change to 5 stars immediately.
Very buggy
I have had loads of issues with this app, a limited summary is below: 1. Audio telling me to turn left when it was a right 2. Trying to take me on private roads. 3. Taking me in a circle. 4. Taking me off a main road only to rejoin the same road a few minutes later and lost time. 5. Audio caught in a repeating loop stating that there were roadworks when none was present.
Meh
It’s not at all what expected I might as well have a satnav on the dash. It runs through my phone. I’ve gotta keep the phone connected and on so it burns my phone battery down yeah 5 out of 10.

CarPlay only shows night colours
After more than two month’s use, since 21st July the app shows only night colours via CarPlay. Reinstall has not fixed this.
Could be improved
Decent app has warned me of all the cameras I've passed lately and some traffic jams + roadworks. An improvement would be a setting to warn of cameras a a further distance away but apart from that I like the app.

It would be super ideal and efficient if in CarPlay when trying to change route options to avoid freeways it would let you do it while IN CarPlay instead of having to do it in the app only by disconnecting CarPlay. Also, when looking at all route options and selecting it, that it would show you what the route actually is via screen text v. just showing you on the map.
Intrusive!
It works well enough but it’s a bit overly friendly and desperate to be a social media experience! Stop telling me how many miles we’ve travelled together and I don’t need to be told to enjoy my afternoon! Thank you anyway. Also, “turn left at the roundabout “ is very misleading, one always has to turn left at the roundabout to leave it regardless of the exit number. Turn left suggests I have to turn left by which point I’m not noticing the fact that later on you say leave at the 3rd exit. Very bad instruction.

This app could not be recognised by / associated with Uber driver app
I wanted to use it as a main map, but it was not detected by Uber driver app nor the Bolt driver app. I like the TomTom app, and it would be convenient to have the option to use it. Is it possible to make this app compatible with Uber/Bolt in the near future?
Not as good as I remember
Update. Developer responded. Ok so - wasn’t ever made clear that Tom device is only for “flyover” mode. The app is no use for navigation 2 issues there. If I’d paid for (all I can see is trick “go” but when you look, there’s car pricing at £20 pa) would the TT paid app do what “Tom” does? Only better. With nav. Wouldn’t it make sense for Tom buyers to have flyover included but option for paid upgrade to “go”? I’d take it. Currently considering returning the hardware Ex private hire driver, heavy user of TomTom hardware. Now iOS and Apple Maps. Bought Tom device, now have TomTom navigation software installed for car play. Can’t seem to see how to set it as a default, nor how to ask Siri to navigate somewhere using TomTom From the CarPlay Tt app I don’t seem to be able to speak to it to set home address for example, or destination. I can search POI’s but that’s not what I want! Tom device is interesting, I like seeing accurate road speed limits. But it means having TT map open, even tho Apple map is navigating. Unlike Ooonie it isn’t showing me mobile camera hot spots, but maybe that’s because I’ve no route set. Yes I’ve looked at settings in phone for default apps (doesn’t list mapping) and in TT app for helpful options.
Traffic works well but makes strange decisions.
I have used this app for a while now driving around Belfast. The traffic feature works great and generally the routes are good but I think there is definitely something missing in the routing algorithm compared to other sat nav’s. Specifically, this app loves to take a shortcut onto other streets to avoid traffic but does not account for the usually much larger delay in turning right (across traffic in the U.K.) at the end of any road, especially when that road is also showing congestion. When calculating a route is fastest, this delay seems to be unaccounted for.
Let's revisit the traditional ways
Super easy to use and fits perfectly with my retro style unit featuring Apple CarPlay on my 2009 CLK. It's perfect for the era when the car was first released and works like a charm without being too complicated.

I like this app over apple, google and waze. The only thing I have an issue with is that it doesn’t show the next Exit by name. It shows the next in xx miles. If you’re familiar with the area then it’s fine but if not.. it’s a bit confusing. I would also like to be able to add police as an option. But prefer this app over those others mentioned above.
The App won’t open since the recent update!
I don’t know how to fix. Sometimes opens if I toggle the connection to the internet, but it’s not reliable. I like this app better than all of the others due to the lack of fluff. I don’t need photos and yelp reviews built in (actually I REALLY don’t want that) so this app is great. Please fix it.
Make it like W@ze but without the gen0c1de involvement
Add the police alerts. Maps sometimes freeze. Make icons bigger for car play and text bigger so it’s readable. Don’t add foreign controversial government T&Cs like another app has. Play hazard alerts even when CarPlay is in split mode.
Impressive
I have only just started using this, but already it is proving to be an indispensable little gadget. The speed camera warnings are timely, there’s no reason to be caught out, plus the odd bleeps when the speed creeps up by a couple of mph. One of its best features are the beeps themselves; loud enough to be heard, but not so loud it becomes intrusive and annoying. I have had equipment in the past that was too loud and too frequent to the point where I turned the thing off, kind of defeating the objective, but true just the same. I won’t have this issue with the Tom! All in all, an impressive piece of kit that will accompany me on my travels wherever I go. Definitely worth the money!
Doesn’t stay on
It started off ok, then it stopped alerting me. Also hard to remember what each directional button does without opening the app. I use the Saphe abroad and it’s much more idiot proof with a longer lasting battery

Carplay disables phone input
You can't use the phone keyboard to enter an address, you have to use the linear keyboard. An active route on the phone is stopped when carplay starts, but you can use previous addresses, at least. Maps are outdated, major street name change from 2 years ago not reflected.
Great App… but
App keeps crashing while using Apple CarPlay at least 50% of the time so can’t really use it as my main Sat Nav app I’m afraid which is a shame as it’s probably the best when it works.

Since update to 12.81.2 Apple Play in the car crashing
I have swopped from Waze a year ago but after updating Tomtom app today to 12.81.2 it’s ok on the iPhone but when connecting to Apple Play in my 2026 Kuga the TomTom app on Apple Play crashes, I have rebooted the iPhone but again the Tomtom app on Apple Play crashes again. The only thing that has changed is the update of the app so I’m pushing it back to you. I’d rather stay with the Tomtom app but as it’s crashing on Apple Play I’ve had to go back to Waze. Hope you can sort it out or give me an idea what I can do at my end, but problem started after the update.
Seems ok not sure if there are any charges?
The app looks good but I honestly do not know if there are any chargers - if there are it will make a considerable difference to this review.

This app is improving a lot, but at the same time this is still long way to replace Google and Apple maps.
Useful but needs work
The app is functional, the maps are excellent, but the search function needs major improvement. There are plenty of positives. The app is beautifully designed, the maps are clear and detailed, and the live traffic data is genuinely useful. The biggest problem is the search function. For example, searching for Metrocentre, one of the largest shopping centres in the UK, can bring up an obscure location instead. Finding the place you actually want often takes far too much effort. Even after saving a location as a favourite, it still does not appear at the top of the results. Because the search is unreliable, I tend to rely heavily on favourites. Unfortunately, there is no backup or restore option. This means all saved locations could disappear after an update, reinstall, or accidental uninstall. Overall, this is a well-designed app with excellent maps and useful traffic information, but the search and favourites system seriously let it down.
