What people like
- Great for quick daily news summaries
- Good source for Irish national news
- Articles are concise and easy to read
- Free access unlike other major newspapers
What they complain about
- Forcing you to sign in is annoying
- Comments section is full of trolls and abuse
- App crashes often or won't open after updates
- Ads interrupt your reading experience constantly
Great!
Great source of balanced news. Comment section best avoided.
Sign up,I think not
App deleted. Not going signing up for a bit of news. Gud luk
Comment section toggle please
Good app, does the trick nicely for news. Please consider adding a settings toggle to chose not to display the comments section. I know I don’t have to scroll down to it but sometimes it’s too easy to have a look and it’s a relentless cesspit, similar to X.
Changes needed
Political bias (pro-government, Israel etc) is very pronounced and making The Journal increasingly irrelevant to readers. When political bias becomes as obvious as it has on The Journal then you know there is a problem. Editorial standards need to be improved around areas such as bias, spell checks, and grammar. Comments section needs overhauling, too many hacks, trolls etc. either clean it up or do away with it in its entirety.
Shame about the trolls
Great news and fact checks. On the ball with breaking news. All that effort sadly ruined by trolls.
Good alternative
I think The Journal is a good alternative to the traditional newspapers and radio news.
Deleted because of compulsory sign-in.
They started forcing users to sign-in to read lots of articles which I refuse to do. There’s plenty of other free news sources online that don’t require me to give up my data to read, so that’s the end of The Journal for me. 👋
Stop with the push notifications!
You send too many! I don’t want to opt out but I have to! Please only send pushes when the news is actually relevant and important to everyone.
Honest opinion
Left leaning woke journalism. It is my honest opinion and the opinion of the majority of my peers. Thank you.
Review
Stop closing the comments on so many articles, thanks in advance
Always good journalism
Always worth a look. Happy to recommend
Forcing readers to login
Forcing me to login? Goodbye thejournal.ie, you used to be my favourite
Inconsistent
Most articles well written with the occasional clanger of badly worded headings. I find very little Irish bias or spin which is good. Can understand reasoning behind closed comments mostly eg legal proceedings, sensitive article, but can be frustrating when there appears to be no logic eg yesterdays report of a football match. I would like to see a reason given each time comments are closed. The growing trend of people commenting on other articles or going completely off topic is annoying.
Becoming unusable
I have no issues with adverts being part of The Journals app, it’s much needed revenue. But when it begins to affect my user experience, I use the app less and less. The video that auto plays at the top of the screen causes the volume of whatever I’m listening to reduce. And now as I’m reading through an article, the text jumps around as I scroll. I suspect this happens as the next advert is loading. I am using the app less as a result.
News is not updating
Have had to delete and reinstall app three times this week. Anyone else have this difficulty and how can it be corrected?
Daily news updates
I get a brief update on a number of the relevant news issues each day. I read all the reports every day, which keeps me well informed, on the reliant happenings both in Ireland and around the world. The articles are a short concise synopses on the relevant points, I like this style of reporting.
Forced sign-ins and begging for money
Bizarre decision. Not worth creating an account to be tracked. Then nagged to pay on almost every article
Concise news
Just the right amount for my interest level.
Comments and seeing how many people agree with comments are gone.
This ruined the journal, many people I know don’t go to the Journal anymore because of this.
Review
Be nice to have some of yer writers based in cork

Hi U A very good coverage of reliable news Séamus
Months of Nagging then forced to register
After months of constant nagging to ‘register’ an email address for a news app then have now decided to make it mandatory before you can read any articles. Thanks but no thanks. App removed, so long The Journal Thanks for all the fish
The journal
Really enjoy read most days
Awful app on iOS
If you only want to read it’s good but if you want to post some comments, you will be doomed. 90% of the time it won’t post and will spin indefinitely whatever the comment is.
True news!
Great e-paper and it’s free unlike the other 2 main Irish papers
Invergordon
Love the journal.Ireland in the Scottish highlands.
Can’t read articles anymore
It looks like they have blocked articles unless you sign in. Looks like I won’t be using Journal.ie anymore.
Don't read the comments
The news reporting is very good, but their comments section is horrendous. It is a puddle of misanthropes, right wingers in disguise, egg people and angry loons. It should be removed, it adds nothing.
Lowlife readers.
The Journal writing standards are fine, and I make a voluntary subscription. It’s the comments that gets me. This publication seems to draw out all the bottom feeders in terms stupidity.
Unbalanced reporting & the app has a technical flaw.
I realize TheJournal.ie caters to liberal ideas, but the flaws I see which keep it from excellent ratings are running quickly with stories that are often based on rumors and innuendo without checking for accuracy and facts. In a propaganda style, the headlines are often written in a sensationalist style and the use of the lead photo is usually a manipulation to get a click. There is a bad technical flaw in the app that has been in existence for over a year. When a user comments on an article and clicks the post button, a pop up declares “there was a problem posting you comment”. Unfortunately this is not true, and it leads to some users posting the same comment two, three or even four times. This is a terrible flaw and I don’t see any other apps that have anything similar. One positive comment I have is that when I see misspellings, grammatical errors or factual errors, the user can inform the writer. I’ve done this many times and some writers send a thank you. This says a lot about the character of the writer and it makes me pay closer attention to their work, whether I agree with the content or not, as correcting errors is essential for good journalism. I also recommend a little less bashing of political and world figures in a general sense. This makes the journal appear sophomoric.
Journal review
A wonderful, fairly comprehensive daily account of national and international happenings. No convoluted language. Well done to all journalists.
Forcing users to register
Recently The Journal started to force users to register in the app, otherwise it just kicks you out of the article. This is very inconvenient and unnecessary, so I’m considering to stop using it, if they continue with this practice.
Hire a spell checker
I enjoy the articles, but seriously, you need a proof reader before things go online. I am dyslexic so have to triple check my work before I send anyone anything. The amount of spelling mistakes in your articles is ridiculous and lowers the professionalism of your outlet.
Frustrating
Why on earth does the stories list scroll to the top unexpectedly?! And I have to scroll all the way back down to get to where I was. Does anyone in Daft media know anything about UX?!
Thumbs down
Really need to bring back the thumbs down.
My homeland
Love reading from my homeland. Keep up the good work.
Poor to say the least
Seems only the leftist community can say what they like on your app, you bar comments & people with no explanation or recourse
Crashes
Getting worse. Still crashes (the whole app) every time you close a blog - but now is from the article tab too not just the comments tab Update : problem fixed. App much better. Commenters ever more bitter and are a poor representation of Ireland unfortunately
Update won't work or open
New update downloads but doesn't open.
Decent variety of articles
Really crap moderation of commenters lets them down. End up seeing the same rabble blowing smoke on every article. Be nice if the heavily down-voted comments were hidden.
Great source for the news
Never miss it . A must read morning and evening
Cant disable sports notifications and sign in prompts wont go away
The constant sign in prompts are annoying Sports is not news. The app needs the ability to decide which notifications to recieve
Great app, worth a look...
Current news app, varied content and a great comments section too! Works for me as my go to Irish news site on my iPhone 6s
Photo problem
Every time I open a slideshow there is no way to close it
Real profiles
Hi guys, Really love your app. Great source for Irish - related news, and great insight by your contributors and some commentators. My only gripe is the keyboard warriors who hide behind an avatar, while delivering bile. Would be great if you could link this to a real profile on FB. Realise that might be hard to do, though. Some people do not add to the debate, but merely spew offense. Otherwise, great tool.
Great summary of Irish news
I live in Northern Ireland and really appreciate having access to a brief summary of the major issues I the Republic.
No stars. Wish they would scrap the forced 1 star on people just to review
Doesn’t work any more since recent update. No issue using until this update. No part accessible so couldn’t report through the app. Deleted/ reinstalled didn’t work nor did turning device on/off. iPad is most current update
Not impressed
What have you done to the app? Installed the latest update and now it won't open or tries to open and then crashes. Have deleted the app and reinstalled it but still does the same thing. Very disappointed. I am running 1st generation iPad with up to date IOS.
App, Server, And Stories Are Weak
Topic: App, Server, And Stories Are Weak This wouldn't be an entirely bad news service app, if only it didn't make it hard to actually use the service to read. I often dread opening the app, because I know what a multitude of pains I will have to endure when simply trying to read. Then, there are the issues of the news aggregators or superiors having an agenda and showing bias. More articles on tea are preferable to being lectured about some pet preference or new fangled cause of the moment. The best parts, though, are the Irish humor, history, culture, food, and the reader comments. However, articles all too often are un-inquisitive, incurious, uninformative, and leave out the basics. The news aggregators lack perspective on the needs of the readers for context and clarity, by delivering content which is vague and obtuse. For example, the news aggregators lazily use acronyms or shortened terms, while never bothering to give the full version. This is particularly egregious when a given acronym has more than one meaning (such as AIB). Even school kids know the first rule for acronyms: spell it out upon their first occurrence. I sometimes learn more from the comments than the articles. The app frequently crashes, resets to the first article if the user multitasks and goes to another app for a minute, constantly loses its place, goes back to the top of the list while reading farther down the list, often refuses to load the next 30 articles at all unless the user closes the app and starts afresh, opens pages slowly, stalls when scrolling down a page, renders page content slowly, sometimes won't load comments, and otherwise makes it hard to access articles to read. So, half or more of the user's time is spent just navigating. The app is decidedly unfriendly to impaired users. It actually discriminates against the vision impaired, because the app blocks the standard ability to highlight text. This matters to impaired users for two reasons: 1) It is not possible to use the text-to-speach function by the vision impaired. 2) Disallows highlighting even a single word at a time, when want to use the Define function. If the user copies an article's URL and wants to read it in a regular or internal browser, the app chooses to launch itself instead. Only by opening the URL two or three times in a row will the app stop interfering. That is very obnoxious, wastes time, and messes with the user's workflow. Thus, the app and servers need a serious overhaul, to improve the speed of content access. If there is an editor, please teach the newer writers the trade.
Steams perfect but bad download
I think this app is great. As an Irish person living abroad I read it daily to keep up with stuff at home. It has the important stuff but not too much. One problem is with "offline" I often 'download' stories and get the message to say download complete but then once I go underground and loose 3G connection all is lost :(
