Poor update
Since ye updated app you can’t click on photos in any articles to make it full screen. Previous version was far better anyway
Good, but not perfect
Everything is great except not being able to enlarge the text like it did previously and search for articles.
Ok app but make images clickable
Since the new app came out, images can’t be clicked on anymore which means you can’t make them bigger where needed. This is bad, please fix it.
Bring back navigation bar
The latest redesign is a step backwards. Please bring back the navigation bar at the top. It made it much quicker and easier to switch between sections. The new layout feels less intuitive and requires more taps. The app is otherwise good, but this change has hurt the user experience…

Was ok , the UI wasn’t great. New update and it’s so good. UI is so nice , easy to use , modern interface and overall good articles

Great App but….
Great app overall but you can no longer tap images to zoom-in like the previous version. A retrograde step in that respect.
Poorer navigation and bland ‘refreshed’ look.
The new app with its refreshed layout is less functional and more difficult to navigate. It is bland and uninteresting. For example switching between news and sport is not intuitive and takes more clicks. The font is smaller and more difficult to read. There are tech issues such as parts not loading and showing as blank. I sure an update can fix these but the layout, navigation need to be urgently redesigned. I find myself using the app less now as the alternative Irish news apps are easier and quicker to use. It’s a pity.
Less user friendly new app!
Previously, you could open a story and then simply swipe or scroll through to the next article with very little interruption. In the redesigned app, each article is more of a standalone page- slower and so annoying- using app less now!
Best free news app for Ireland
Excellent news coverage and usually quick with breaking stories. I use it every day on phone, pc & iPad. Analysis from correspondents worth reading.
New changes reduce user experience
The new changes are not good. One, you cannot search. Two, you cannot zoom into images and the text. Three, you cannot flick right to quickly see all the news items as you could in the last version. Please consider updating again to address these issues.

The latest version of RTE news is a really nice update. A search function would be very useful in this new user interface and topic listings.
Bring back the old app!!
My go to for content but removed the banner and ability to swipe between news items is a big mistake. Please fix…
RTE news refreshed
Improved from previous version I a way but the text size cannot be adjusted. And the home button doesn’t take you there really. You can no longer zoom images. The home feed list is a bit cramped, a little more space between sections might help

Some plusses: -Topics along the bottom much better for one-hand navigating on phone. -Much slicker looking interface. -Grouping videos and live feed in the Watch heading. -Dark Theme. -User settings well-laid out -My List -Link to weather on top right (even though most users will have a weather app on their phone, having a Met Éireann feed on our national broadcaster’s app is really good). Some of the issues I have so far: -Video content freezes, won’t download properly, especially when trying to view full screen. -Cannot zoom images. Badly needed when viewing on a phone screen. -Cannot swipe between stories. -New layout is only a small niggle-it’s just the standard change from the familiar and will just take getting used to. Overall, for a news app, it’s quite smooth, stories and topics are easy to navigate (though a back button or swipe between stories option would improve this further). Content is generally good from RTE. Disappointing though to regularly see spelling mistakes and grammatical errors in the content, but I guess that’s not the app’s fault! I’d upgrade my rating to 4 or maybe 5 stars if the video playback issues were fixed and the ability to zoom or display images full-screen was introduced. Without these, any videos or images are essentially inaccessible. UPDATE: The video playback issues and lack of zoom on images are exasperating. The frustration factor every time I want to view a story has led me to downgrade my rating to one star. It’s a shame, because many other aspects of the app are quite good. Shame the app developers couldn’t get the basics right.

A refresh but too many lingering issues (June 2026)
Some nice visual improvements but the app is still NO replacement for their news website. Years after I reported this bug, it does not let you customise push notifications. Yes, there are toggles for turning categories such as entertainment off, but they are not functional as they turn themselves on automatically again later that day. Every time. The app has lost the ability to zoom in on photos, which is challenging for people with poorer eyesight. The app will not let you select text to use the lookup iOS menu, so if we find a word or a name we don’t recognise, we have to exit the app to look it up instead. Clearly there has been been no end user testing, so the app fails on basic usability. Use the RTÉ news website instead.

Latest version has a couple of issues. You need to go back to homepage to select next article, old app allowed you to move to next story in sequence. Old app had easy feature to change size of font. I can’t find how to do this in the latest update

Font size too small!
I have been using the RTÉ app for years, but this recent update means I can’t really use it any more. The font size is too small and there is no ability to increase the size or zoom the text. Very disappointing!
No Dark Mode
Great news service - but no dark mode leaves this app a bit behind the times. Any chance of a dark mode update?

Why does the app fully reset/refresh every time I reopen it? Could be a case of me checking a message for 10s, then jumping back into the app and I’m on the homepage again. This has to be a configuration thing because no other news apps I have do this. Really hope it can be fixed. For my sake but also for views for the app: it’s not worth my time finding the article, then also finding where I was, never mind casting my mind back to the subject - I just give up and look at something else.
Efficient and full updates.
For a person living in the north, this site is a highly useful, concise and pretty immediate source of news and comment. Reporting seems full and fair and, for me, involves efficient and full updates. Overall, my comments would be positive and affirmative of content and analysis. Go raibh maith agaibh go leir!
Updated App design - poor user experience
Terrible, poor UI app that is impossible to navigate with ease. Returning to the homepage in the past worked better - would need to bring the top by default instead of scrolling all the way up manually, images can no longer be zoomed. App doesn’t automatically refresh and needs to be scrolled to the top to perform refresh. Swipe to the right/ left are not functioning. Frustrating experience, if not fixed soon - it will be uninstalled. Update: I have deleted the app since there are no improvements that addresses the issues.

Nice for getting news from back home while abroad. Remember to switch your VPN over to Irish servers if accessing from outside of Ireland. Content won’t load otherwise.
No sound on videos
I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app but there doesn’t seem to be a way to fix the problem!
Fine, just buggy
App is fine, but buggy when it comes to video playing. But the most annoying thing, every update notification preferences in the app resets. I turn off sports notifications so I don’t get spoiled if I can’t see certain matches live, and the amount of times a match gets spoiled for me because the app has recently updated is infuriating. If the fix notifs resetting it would get 4*

It’s great because it keeps you up to date with news and sport from home. Quality!!!!
Non functioning
All things ‘tech’ regarding RTE are an absolute nightmare. Cheap, second rate, constant ‘glitches’ never a coherent explanation. Advertising always ‘stuffed in and works’ but content on apps as reliable as the Bakewell tart in charge
News / Hone page
Seems this page won't load since the last update, at least nog on my iPhone. Other pages load big much slower than before. Such a shame was an excellent app. Hope you find a fix soon.
No sound on videos
The app is ok but a big problem is that the sound doesn’t work. I have tried to trouble shoot with no resolution. I can see from forums that it’s a common problem.
Great but 1 big annoyance
Love the content, good notification but it’s a bit frustrating that the app goes back to the homepage when you jump to another app and the back again. Please make last page persist

Some people want the best they watch bbc then some want the very best and watch utv THEN AFTER THAT IS RTÉ
Please roll back the app
The older version was better IMO. Concise and easy to navigate. The new version is more like social media than a news outlet. You instantly lost credibility by doing this and lost the older generation
Balanced Reading
The app has really improved after removing the pop up ads The question remains as to why ads are still on news articles After the fb data mining scandal , Rte need to to re-evaluate this part of their app service Clicking on an imbedded video and adjusting the volume control leaves the user looking at the volume settings , missing the video Being able to customize sports news weather is great
News never opens
Very poor performance regularly crashes and fails to open up the news section

Can’t click the ‘X’ to close video. Have to close the app and reopen. Very frustrating. Been like this for a long time. Please fix.

Excellent news site. Gives comprehensive coverage of local, European and world news in convenient format.
Bring back the old format
The latest update to the app is awful. Navigating it to see the latest headlines and regional news is too cumbersome. I used to visit the app multiple times a day now I’ve subscribed to the Times. Please change it.
It's A Goiod App
This is a good okay world news app. When breaking news is happening you are notified as soon as the news is happening... And it's a good European news app overall. It could be better like BBC or FNC . I would giving this news app a 5 star but needs more news alerts and updates that the other news apps are doing
TV GUide
You do not publish a TV guide on this app though you do have groupings for Sports,Entertainment etc. To get an idea of RTÉ programmes, the main web site requires activating. PS. Ray D’Arcy is a disaster get him off RTÉ. His spoken language is often not decipherable.
Great but. I audio on clips.
It’s great for keeping up to date but only problem is no audit on video clips. Tried everything, deleting-reinstalling, it’s not on mute and volume is shown as up but still no sound. Audit on other apps (BBC etc) working fine.. bit of a mystery..
