A great way to learn a language

I’ve been using LingQ for several years now just got serious with it in the last year. It’s great for reading and listening and building vocabulary in many different languages at once or a single one if you choose if I use it for both French in Spanish and I’m very happy with the content.

Great app but developers are unresponsive.

I’ve been using this app for 6 years and there’s been a few problems for years and they never get fixed. You can not highlight more than a few words at a time like in desktop which it’s important for denser texts with more complex structure. You can exit the app for a few seconds and it refreshes and it’s tedious to have look for and open the lesson again.

Confusing user interface and bug

First and foremost I would like to thank the developers for the free app. Can anyone imagine the days we learned languages from books and later from CDs? In my opinion though the user interface should be improved in certain areas. When listening to a lesson the app doesn’t turn the page and the current sentence is hard to discern from other sentences. Could the current sentence be shown in bold? The back button does navigate to a sentence read out 5? seconds ago instead of the previous sentence. 5 or 6 Status to flag the level of ones familiarity with it, is a bit much and I don’t get what these labels are supposed to mean. Worse though once a word has been ticked off, there’s no way back. My memory may not be the best but truth is people do forget vocab, so it would be good to change that feature. Last but not least I never know which menu gets me to the vocab test. The descriptions are not terribly good.

One of the better apps

Took me a while to get into the swing of it, but now it’s my most-used learning app. Drawbacks are occasional translation errors and somewhat odd designation of “words”. But it does a lot and works with lots of sources. Once you find some appropriate material to study, you’re golden. I use in conjunction with a chat AI (Claude in my case) to dig into deeper questions. The built-in AI is getting better, but I already have Claude trained up for what I want.

LingQ Impressions

The LingQ concept is great, although the implementation is somewhat rough at best. The AI quality ranges from very poor to almost okay. Translations can range from being completely off base and marginally correct to good. The AI pronunciation is not infrequently absolutely terrible, and sometimes inaudible. I keep using it because it is the only software package of its kind and despite the shortcomings, I am learning a lot. Please work on making the software as amazingly fantastic as it can be.

Valuable app for language learning

I’ve enjoyed utilizing the LingQ app for well over a year, and I will continue my subscription for the foreseeable future. Listening to native speakers in the language one is trying to learn is very crucial. By listening, one picks up on not just the words and their pronunciation, but also the intonations and the rhythms of the language. Being able to read along is also a valuable language learning tool, and I like being able to change the blue highlighted words to bright yellow (new word) to light yellow (familiar) and finally to not highlighted at all (known). Repetition is key in learning new words, but the learning process is aided by seeing the words in context in different ways. I’m not a fan of studying vocabulary on its own, although it would probably speed up my learning if I did that too. I am learning Russian, and there is one serious irritant with this app worth mentioning. Within some of the short stories and commentaries, there is a lot of Western propaganda spewed forth, specifically surrounding the USSR. The common talking points brought up by Russophobes and haters of the USSR have been largely debunked long ago and there is no excuse for allowing these myths to be continually propagated. Russia has declassified the archives and the truth has been spilling out, albeit slowly. For those who are interested, one can read books on the subject (such as Grover Furr), listen to podcasts such as ProlesPod (“The Stalin Eras”), or watch videos on the real history of Russia and the USSR. It saddens me to hear native Russian speakers misunderstanding or being ashamed of their rich history and regurgitating myths propagated by the West trying to malign and destroy them.

Confusing

There is no path. They just throw a lot of content at you. I’ve also found vocabulary errors and in German it is imperative to learn the article with the noun, but they do not include the article in the flashcards. Speaking of the flashcards they frequently show the same information on both sides of the flash card so they already give you the answer but making the flash card worthless.

Really does more than annoying me at times when editing definitions either get: self undo when I finished editing it or keyboard disappear suddenly mid editing and I accidentally delete the word definition. Not to mention some words in Cantonese, the pronunciation are just wrong, noticeably it’s one of the most common words 咁 (gam3) being pronounced as (gam2). There’s nothing better, but it needs real improvements

There is no better app for reading ebooks and listening to podcast audio in a foreign language. The interface for tapping one or more words then fetching a word’s transcription, for both its dictionary definition and both in-context definition, and saving it, is unparalleled. But why does it take so long to load? Why is the app’s upload interface so glitchy compared to the one on the Web? Why can’t it auto-scroll in the same interface with the click-to-translate? Why doesn’t it make an attempt to count or save word stems? I really wish this app were just a little better.

The perfect intermediate level app, but.

First I want to say that I’ve been paying for this app for a while. It’s integral to my language studying, despite the use-case being flawed for MY specific target language (Russian)- even so, I find it and the lessons inside to be invaluable. That being said, to anyone reading this: your mileage may vary, but I truly haven’t found a replacement for LingQ’s ability to generate audio AND transcriptions AND translate words AND phrases in real time—and create flash cards, too! Which, again, depending on your target language, will vary in helpfulness (especially if your target language significantly and often modifies the spelling of words, then you end up will a million cards. But at least your LingQ coin number keeps going up, so the dopamine button is there). The AI implementation is wonderful, especially the LynxAI- I used to painstakingly screenshot the transcriptions just to copy the text and paste them into ChatGPT to generate multiple choice questions. Now, however, that can be done in-app. I have TWO major gripes with the AI, though: First: Please allow for the conversations with LynxAI to be done in your preferred language, too. Sure it’s incentive to know my target language better, but when I’m asking for multiple choice questions to test my comprehension of the passage, I don’t want to be confused about the questions. But I can get over this gripe, it’s totally bypassable by using the highlight-translate function. Second: The screen reader voice. I cannot deeply enough express my hatred for whatever is going on with the AI voice. In Russian, when it’s reading aloud, in its ‘attempt at sounding human’, it HESITATES. IT STUTTERS. IT LITERALLY SAYS “UHHH” AS IT’S READING LARGE PASSAGES! It’s so bafflingly stupid to hear a robot sound as confused about my target language as I am, and yet it’s the one with infinite, programmed knowledge. It’s an embarrassing implementation, and it frankly enrages me. It does not engender confidence. It sounds like it didn’t want to show up to work. At least Microsoft Sam didn’t sound bored when it would read to me. The uncanny valley of sounding robotic- which, mind you, has not been a problem for years now as we have all adapted to the voices of digital helpers like Siri- has been bridged, but at what cost? If I wanted to listen to someone speak Russian with absolutely no confidence, I would simply speak into my selfie camera. The day that the AI voice changes to something less offputting, I’ll change my review back to five stars, but unfortunately the VERY useful and integral tool of generating brand new audio for texts is being undermined by this weird implementation. P.S., Sorry to whoever’s baby the Russian screenreader voice is, but I’m going to hold your hand when I tell you this: your baby is ugly. Looking for change, but if nothing else, I hope the staff get a laugh out of this review. Thank you.

Enjoy the app but there are bugs

I really enjoy this app, it has helped me read short stories from just the one week of having it. i’m learning korean and i notice some of the recording are not the correct word (example the number 7, has a pronunciation of a completely different word than what is showed on screen) so that part is a bit frustrating bc i’m a new learner and don’t fully understand why there’s differences- whether is be a bug or an error. also when there’s multiple choice- when it comes to picking the word that is spoken- some of the words glitch out and there is no audio, so you have 4 words to choose from with no audio to listen too, so you either have to guess or just select “l don’t know” which is annoying. those are the only things i’ve noticed, i do enjoy this app despite these bugs- please fix them soon though lol, i feel like this app will accelerate my learning extremely well once the app is optimized.

No other app fills this role, but wish it gave greater control and bug fixes.

Overall, the app is great and has become a vital part of my language studies. That said, there are some annoying bugs and functionality gaps that I wish would be addressed. I should be able to use any YouTube video, regardless of it having captions or a transcript available, the app should be able to generate one that I can edit on the fly. The app shouldn’t be trying to add pinyin words to my vocabulary, it should know that any pinyin found in a caption is not a Chinese character or word. There are still some kinks to work out with the Chinese-language functionality. It often misidentifies word boundaries, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to correct this on the app. I’ve also noticed some pronunciation issues depending on which voice is selected. I’d also love to see more control over the UI, especially options for font size and where the lesson text appears on the screen. I don’t see why the layout couldn’t be more like a book page. Even with these issues, I still rely on the app heavily because I haven’t found a better, more cohesive way to turn YouTube content into lessons and track my progress. With more UI customization and improvements to the Chinese functionality, this would easily be a 5-star app.

It took me a while until I fully appreciated how good the LingQ Mandarin Chinese HSK 1 course is. Excellent Language Learning App

This is an excellent language learning method, specially for people who are already in A2-B1 level and want a boost to B2-C1. However, some missing features are keeping this app from offering the best language learning experience. First, this app does not target people who do not have a background in the language they are learning. For example, if you are English speaking and want to learn Russian or Arabic, you would get frustrated immediately. There are “Basic” lessons in every language in LingQ, but they are not basic enough for someone who wants to start from absolute zero. Second, the app does not generate quality audio on imported text. LLM is advancing fast, and voice generation has become extraordinarily. A good language app has to keep up with the pace. Third, the “Known Word” count has to enhance. If you start listening to news, you will realize that your word count augments rapidly, but the “New Words” are just the names of individuals! LLMs are capable of finding these kinds of content, and prevent them from appearing “Blue” in the first place. The known word problem goes well beyond that, and LingQ needs to define some policies regarding word counting. Fourth, LingQ is seriously lacking a comprehensive writing section. If we are having an AI chatbot in the app, how difficult would it be to have a writing section that asks the user to write X words, then corrects the writing using AI, and generates flash cards based on mistakes and enhancements? In short, LingQ is awesome, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I appreciate it as what it is now, and I am looking forward to seeing it improve.

The app is riddled with bugs and it seems to miss the fundamentals. Many new features have been added since I last used the app, but features as simple as adding new words simply do not work correctly. Totally overwhelmed by vast amount of stuff initially. Very hard to find a way round, which delayed my eventual buying for many months. Getting better in leaps and bounds having learned to navigate the sponge! Highly recommended but perseverance essential. Continuing to improve as I learn my way around. 2nd look: truly horrible. I am not interested in tokens, streaks, coins or other gimmicks. I don’t want to take on the challenge of all the intricacies of this app. I actually want to learn Mandarin. There is no shortage of material and a clear method but no sensible measure of progress. I will persevere but it could be so much better and less frustrating if the gimmicks and general fog were removed. Months later: Dec-25 No longer truly horrible but still very hard to get motivated and can be boring. There is no structure to suck you in or to measure progress by. I spend much more time on Duo Lingo which ran out of new material at one point and is quite limited in many respects but it is totally structured and demands progress.

Lots of glitches but still ok

I really like this app, I’ve waited for years and years for it to be developed and improved. One issue I do have is the amount of glitching. I pay for a full version and it’s quite expensive but my streaks often disappear which is frustrating, or it shows I haven’t done any reading when I have done 13 pages in my book that day. Some days I try to earn my daily streak and it seems to take 35 minutes of reading and other days it takes a couple minutes. I often have to close and reopen the app and re read what I had read to get my streak. This inconsistency is annoying, time consuming, and causes me to not read as much as I do on other more consistent language learning apps like Duolingo- which have great streaks and reward systems and interaction with friends ect. I hope these glitches can be fixed soon as I would love to be proud of my progress and learning on this app as well. Otherwise it is great! It does offer so much more than other apps in regards to translating content.

Lacks some functionality

I love LingQ! It’s taking me to a new level of learning. I’ve been using it for less than three months and I’ve learned so much. But simple, behind-the-scenes functionality isn’t as crisp as I’m used to in apps And software in general. I can’t move an imported lesson or add or change a tag without deleting the lesson and re-imported it into the desired folder with the desired tag. This is tedious and a big time waster. When I edit a definition/translation, all my previous definitions, complete with mistakes, remain. I would think I should be able to delete my old definitions if I’ve improved them but I can’t (or can’t figure out how). The result is that the list of saved meanings accessible to all is very untidy and how would a person know which meaning/s to choose for one’s own use? I’ve been using forums of one sort or another since 1997 and I can’t figure this one out—so maybe I can do the things above but I can’t find out how. I can’t find a place where others learning my language (Norwegian) are hanging out or where questions about the language are being asked and answered. The basic concept of LingQ is brilliant but it would be nice to have the functional nuts and bolts more adjustable to users’ needs.
