Won’t work for Chinese
Their extension and App works for all other languages but Chinese. When you switch to Chinese subtitles extension shows English or Korean, I’ve never chosen to learn Korean. In the App account, when you pick Chinese it teaches you Japanese instead, I’ve never chosen to learn Japanese. I even forced a switch to Chinese in the website url and still ended up Japanese. Decent with 1 major design flaw on the mobile app
Decent app but contains one major design flaw. On the mobile app, it doesn’t support international keyboard so one can’t fill out the quiz answer. Workaround is to open a separate app like notes, type out the answer then copy and paste the answer. Very annoying.
Failed to deliver
I chose German Advanced which matches my competence. The format is good; using videos and quizzes. The language is current and I had no software issues. However several days and ca. 1 to 2 hours revealed errors in the German and English sentence structures, e.g. errors in punctuation of questions, or with sentences containing full stops in the middle, or with extra words in: “Here we were received with great joy and great joy” or “Because the costs are significantly higher. Than those for a combustion engine.” or “Er macht eine Ausbildung in E-Technik gemacht. “ or “and saw in my birthday here partying.” There were just too many errors to have confidence in the material. If this is AI driven the language model provider needs to up their game.
A Lot Better (Spanish)
I like it overall. The Spanish content is really well-developed and up there now. Can't speak for the other languages. But Spanish draws on all the movie, Pixar content, our culture, and the accents are really cool. I love the mostly clear and educated Mexican accents and videos on Mexican culture. I passed on fluentU years ago and even just a few months ago. But, now I'm in Ukraine, and wanted to reconnect with a deeper understanding of the language. It's not too bad. Gotten better at this moment with the user experience on fluentU. I just hope they keep it this way and not make any deleterious changes.

Frustrating
This service is quite frustrating, I paid for a year of the plus service and it could be a great service for language learning but there are definitely problems that I feel can hinder one’s progress, the quizzes are way too long, for a 4 minute video the quiz is taking me well over an hour, I would skip the quizzes altogether except it appears to be the only way to mark a video as completed. And for this particular 4 minute video, the quiz finally ran out of questions and the video is still showing as incomplete, so I wasted over an hour fooling around with this quiz just to get the video completed and it still won’t mark it completed. I need the videos I watched already marked as complete so I can move on to other videos and feel like I am making some kind of progress. This service is way too expensive to be having these kinds of problems, completely defeats the purpose of it being a learning platform when I can’t even mark videos complete. Also it would be nice if there was a shuffle button so you can get a random video to watch and not have to go through hundreds of videos as this can be overwhelming. I may just cancel the membership after my 1 year
The pronunciations are too robotic, but good overall.
I am learning Korean and have an intermediate understanding. This app is amazing for building context based on clips and then learning the vocab etc. My only complaint is that the the voice repeating the sentence are essentially from Google Translate. So if you’re trying to learn the pronunciations or the “flow” of certain sentences, do NOT try and follow the robotic one. Reference the video clip instead. I wish someone would take the time to clip the video audio to the sentences being taught or just record it themselves. It would have been great.
Great idea, terrible execution
I’ve used FluentU for over six years to study Mandarin and can say the structure of the flashcard system is unique and in many ways better than other systems out there (and I have used many of the most popular alternatives). I really want to love this app, but sadly can confirm there are tons of quality issues that regularly show up with the app (often it seems little to no testing must have been done since some bugs are completely blocking anyone from using the functionality). These are not small nit picky issues, they are major functional issues that should not have been allowed to be released in the first place. This has been a trend for the last few years and is getting worse. It feels like the app started with a different engineering team and handed over to a much less experienced one. Very sad,
Does it works on mobile phone ?
I just looked at this app and at the first glance everything looks great in the web version however when I am trying to see videos on my phone app it doesn’t work and it is really frustrating.
Love fluent U
Fluent U makes learning a language fun and engaging. Great exercises and quizzes. I wish there was a fluentU program you could listen to while walking or driving. ?!
Lied about trial
The app shows you get a 2 week free trial but then charges you right away. I have to request a refund from Apple now. It just charged me $200.. what a rip off
Uniquely inspirational
I am nearly to the end of my free trial and will be continuing the course. Where this has already helped me tremendously is in the spelling of French words. The orange ticks indicating the need to review are brilliant. I find it so stimulating and to use the power of other mediums to really grasp pronunciations in everyday language is essential. My translator app even recognises words it did not before. Such a fun way to learn. I am just starting to develop my own flash cards.

I would try this app but I don’t see a subscription price. Everyone hides their prices and I don’t like it. If I don’t see transparent pricing, I move on!
Halfway to being brilliant
The collection of captioned videos is a tremendous learning resource. For those alone, I may continue after the free trial. There are issues though. No landscape mode on iPad. Poor playback controls. Annoying ka-ching noise and animations after every activity like some Facebook mini-game from 2010. Also, it forces you to use English and pinyin in the tests instead of 汉子. It’s too bad, because this could be amazing. But as things stand…

You will not get anything they advertise
I got this a couple of years ago and had really high hopes. It worked for a while and I really liked the videos they had. But they advertise everywhere that you can upload any video/movie/podcast and will be able to study with it. But, when you are in the app, their FAQ says that you are only able to use their selections. It constantly has bugs, and when you try to talk to customer support, you will only get a bot (and sometimes not even that.) During the 2-ish years I had the app (holding out hope for things to get resolved) I was unable to even access my account for about 6 months, and they never gave me a refund or even acknowledged it again. The flash cards are constantly wrong, so if you don’t have a foundational knowledge in your target language, you will get the wrong information. They also say that you will get speaking practice with the app, but I have only been able to use that feature once or twice in the time I’ve had the app. And that isn’t even counting the weird AI updates they’ve started forcing on users and cause even more bugs and glitches.
Good app for French
As someone learning French in school, I wish they’d taught it this way more. It helps you learn colloquial phrases through videos rather than the traditional learners way which leaves you sounding like a textbook. Love that. I just wish they had more advanced flash cards, the intermediate and advanced are just slightly harder beginner words

App not working
It’s been over a week now and this app is still not working. I open the app and the logo will be there forever with no change.
Charged Immediately for free trial
Like other reviewers, I was charged immediately for a free trial. I understand sometimes people struggle to cancel their subscriptions before the paid version renews.. but I was simply charged before my free trial period even started. I have contacted support for help and will update this review if help is received.
Good but has room for improvement
PLEASE fix the bug that changes Chinese from simplified to traditional automatically EVERY TIME!
User Interface is lacking; App doesn’t rotate on iPad
I’ve been using FluentU for a couple of weeks now and my main complaints are: 1. The poor user interface. Compared to other platforms I’ve used, the look and feel, button placement, moving between lessons, etc. is poorly designed. Sometimes I’m not sure whether to click or swipe. Other times I’m not sure how to move forward with a lesson that is not complete. I will likely get used to it over time, but they really need to revisit the entire UX for simplicity and visual cues. 2. I can’t believe that the IOS app doesn’t rotate on an iPad. I use a keyboard case with my iPad but cannot with FluentU because all the lessons appear sideways. It’s not due to rotation lock on the iPad, either. This is a big miss for mobile learners like myself.
Read, write, listen, speak
I’ve been learning Japanese everyday for 2 years now with various tools and just found FluentU. Your brain will learn faster watching videos of people using words in context, it’s that simple. I even type the sentences out on a Word document while I’m watching. Then shadow talk with the voices at 50% playback. Then take the quizzes. Read, write, listen, and speak all in one. I’m making gains faster this way. A big plus is you can increase the size of the font pretty big for the kanji. This I really appreciate. ありがとうございます😊
Video is almost useless and the teaching method undermines pronunciation.
When playing the video clips on an iPad Air the clips fire off one after another so quickly that there is no time to process the info. The clips are moving so quickly that the beginning of each clip is truncated. Additionally like all language learning programs they expect you to be literate right away. The western alphabet is used differently from language to language. Teaching people to read and write before they can understand leads to poor pronunciation. Stop doing this very few 6 year olds can read and write but most of can speak their native language pretty well.
This is the best learning tool I’ve seen for French!
I am at the intermediate level in French. I’ve used Rosetta Stone as well as Duolingo. It’s hard to stick with either of them because they just get boring after a while. I am pretty determined to learn conversational French, and I stumbled upon FluentU when I googled the differences between “quand” and “lorsque” - which resulted in a great document from FluentU. So I signed up for the two week trial. I’m enjoying the video method SO much! I get to hear way more French the way that regular folks speak it. AND I get these useful emails with extra notes on grammar, recommended movies and popular expressions. I am blown away by how fun this is! Not a Free Trial
If I need to hand over payment details then it’s not a free trial. Too many incidents of people being wrongly charged in the reviews so I’ve had to back out.
Subscription cancellation
I subscribed to the two week free trial, but the subscription did not show up in my Appstore Subscriptions so I was unable to cancel it. I was just charged $96 for an app I barely ever used. Update: I reached out and FluentU refunded me and cancelled my subscription. I don’t know what the problem is with Appstore subscriptions but I’m thankful for the great customer service.
Amazing app!
Finally a new way to actually learn and remember the words. I typically don’t write reviews, but this app makes me want to. It is so worth it! Got it for the free trial, and stayed for good. Th only app I use now to peachy Spanish

Great app but one annoying issue
When using it on the mobile device, when you enter an answer, it pops up saying ‘great, pay attention to the (tones)’ but this box blocks the English translation of the sentence so it’s impossible to see if you correctly I translated the sentence. But the app is great aside from that! It would be great to fix it ( possibly have the pop-up disappear if you click it)
Infuriating, limited, slow
The videos often fail to load then the app wants you to spend your time logging all the bugs. Do your own work. I already paid to use the app. The advanced Spanish is basic.

Recommend for learning real conversational language
I’ve tried many apps but I like this one as it uses real life conversation, songs, documentaries, dramas. It’s very varied. The real life situations make it highly applicable to learning every day language skills. Thank you
I CANCELED MY SUB AND THEY STILL CHARGED ME
What more can I say? I signed up and had it for a year. Was fun but not progressing that much whatever so I canceled it and then checking my bank statement months later i see that they have charged me for a renewal. Not only that, but i actually don’t even have access to the material so on top of everything I’m getting charged for services I don’t even get.

I am unable to cancel because the settings page is always under maintenance. It is a scam. They keep warning me that my free trial is almost over but there’s no way for me to cancel. I’m going to have to ask my cc to reimburse me. Don’t sign up.
Meh
Concept is really good but the actual app is not great. The videos are not massively engaging - they seem a bit haphazard. Loads of them do not have the subtitles shown underneath and some of the ones that do, miss out whole sentences making it annoying/difficult to follow.
Enjoying app but one big issue
I am really enjoying the app, this form of learning is very productive as you are learning from real humans voice instead of speech robot. I am currently on the trial version, however my only big issue is the price of the membership personally I think it is too high compared to similar language apps on the market so I’m not too sure at this moment if I will carry on with a membership after the end of my trial.

Cancelled on last day of trial, still billed, zero response from support
I tried this app and then cancelled on the last day of my trial and still got billed $140 for a year. I’ve tried emailing support about this with no response. FluentU took my money even though I cancelled on the last day. I want my money back!
The best Chinese learning app for me
I love consuming media and being entertained while learning. This app is perfect for me because it lets me do both. The interactive dictionary lets me learn more and more words each time I’m learning something. It’s a great opportunity to boost your vocabulary.
Transcripts are good, but the “teaching” element is lackluster
Their formula is to rip YouTube videos and create content from them. The questions are not challenging or thought provoking whatsoever; the multiple choice questions can be easily answered correctly without any knowledge of the language. It seems to me that they transcribe the videos pretty well, but they put next to no effort to create an educational environment beyond that. Not worth the money.

A more entertaining way to learn
I just started learning on this app, I have tried Rosetta Stone and Duolingo and got bored so fast. With this one I am loving the videos. I can’t wait to start a new part of the unit to watch the fun videos you have there. The videos plus “gaining / winning points” and having day streaks is definitely making me feel engaged. Rarely leave app reviews, but this needed to be said :) Hopefully my dream of learning Spanish would be complete soon 🤞🏼
No landscape mode for iPad
I do most work on my iPad with an attached keyboard. This app does not support landscape mode and I can’t use it, so I cancelled my subscription 10 minutes after setting it up.

App doesn't work anymore
I've been a user of this app for over two years. Recently the app stopped working so I put in a help desk request for suggestions. Their response was for me to notify them via the app that isn't working. That's like asking a person whose car with an engine that doesn't start to drive to the shop instead of getting a tow. So the only way this app works for me now is to uninstall and then reinstall every day. That's a real pain so I am probably not renewing if this doesn't get resolved.
