Best language app
This is by far the best language app I’ve ever tried. It doesn’t use ai (to my knowledge), it’s basically free, and it has lessons that actually work in tons of languages! My only criticism is that you should add chapters on how to learn the different writing systems, and also to maybe add Esperanto. Thank you! -an aspiring hyperpolyglot

Love to Vietnamese!
I normally never write a review for an app, but I am especially inspired today to express my appreciation for this app. I have always wanted to improve my Vietnamese (my family speaks)but have always found it so difficult across various apps because of different pronunciations and the exaggerated formality of the language. As a speaker seeking to increase her vocabulary outside of a household setting, I commend your dedication to the language and the curriculum to actually teaching someone a language with the goal to put it to real world use with REAL conversation. My only complaint in the way the app is formatted. I think your mission is amazing but if the app was a little easier to navigate take Duolingo as inspiration maybe? Also vocabulary wise I am already familiar with many words as is but would love to add a unit one vocab word to a bigger vocab flash card list with more advanced words. Thank you MANGO team!
Too complicated and poor ui

No Kanji
This app really needs to incorporate kanji into Japanese learning. Teaching everything primarily in hiragana makes reading real Japanese more difficult, because Japanese is normally written using a combination of kanji, hiragana, and katakana. A simple improvement would be to replace appropriate hiragana words with their standard kanji and provide furigana above the kanji for learners who still need help with pronunciation. This would allow users to learn how Japanese is actually written while still being able to read unfamiliar kanji. Without enough kanji exposure, I feel like I’m learning to read Japanese in a way that doesn’t reflect what I actually encounter in Japan. Adding kanji with furigana would make the app significantly more useful for serious Japanese learners.

One of its kind app, it offers a learning vida a great listening experience besides exercises. The support team is rapid and responsive. Thanks a lot for such a great app.

I remember hearing about Mango Languages 20 years ago and how it was potentially free if you did it at the library. I always wanted to try it, and now that we live in an age of smartphones where we can connect our apps to our library cards, this really is a great gift. I am one of those who completely lost faith in Duolingo once I realized that its business model relied on drip feeding people the feeling of education for as long as possible to keep getting their money rather than actually educating them. I am thrilled that this app exists, and I am thrilled that the institution of the library still exists in these dark times for public infrastructure so I need to give all of that prepuce before I register my one complaint: I have just started a French course and want to take advantage of the autoplay feature while I get ready in the morning, drive my car, etc. but unpredictably it will jump at seemingly random points in seemingly random exercises, skipping to the next. I don't want to miss any content because it was surely laid out with the repetitions by design. But I also don't want to have to sit beside it like a babysitter to advance slide after slide when there are so many opportunities throughout the day to let it just play to me. This one but being ironed out would make the app perfect for me.
Library account
Signing up with my library card still is a difficult procedure. I’m still not able to after googling and reading how to.

finally finding a free language learning app with only the need of a library card is amazing, unlike other apps that are stuck behind a paywall/won’t teach you anything, mango actually does teach important basics and has a flash card feature! 10/10 to anyone who wants to learn a new language !!
Not good for Vietnamese
Fell for the trap. Saw someone mentioning it being good for southern Vietnamese online. Little did I know that they only have one unit for Vietnamese, and it was very much focused on tourist interactions (while also being way too advanced for a tourist lol)… and it definitely didn’t have any units with southern Vietnamese language used. Oh well.
“How old are you” is incorrect in Japanese
I’m learning Japanese and the app taught me to say that “お歳は？ (otoshi wa)” is the correct way to ask how old are you. However, native speakers say that’s unnatural. The natural and polite way to ask is actually おいくつですか？ (oikutsu desu ka) and the informal way to say it would’ve been “何歳ですか” (nansai desu ka) so I’m kinda disappointed that Mango didn’t catch that

i’m learning french and only got to the third lesson before it didn’t let me finish, and said i needed the membership or whatever everytime i tried to progress each day. it’s trapped and broken and will not let me continue, while there’s no other apps i know of that teach canadian french?? what the hell
Meh
I have their paid subscription but am looking for alternatives to Duolingo because their predatory business model of constantly pushing PAID users to buy points for real money to buy your way through the levels really ruins the joy of learning a language for me. However, there seems to be no app that does it all perfectly. I find this app from the sample content to be very “dry” but two definite pluses are how the app explains WHY a phrase is said a certain way - it gives insight in to the literal meaning of a phrase- and in addition to speaking with a quality voice, it also shows the phonetic spelling to help you understand how to pronounce a word better. What I really don’t like is the push to sign up for an account- free or not- especially when it only lets me see a few basic words I already know. I want to know what other lessons and activities are contained in this app before even signing up; I have ZERO interest in signing up for yet another subscription trial. I want to know exactly what the content is ahead of time and THEN if it has value I will pay for it.
I love your app but
I really love your app it helped me learn how to pronounce some Japanese words. I deleted the app for some space but now when I try to open the app it won’t open. I tried to back out of all the other apps and reset my phone but I still can’t use the app, it’s just all black then backs me out. Thanks for listening and if you have some advice I would be very grateful to try it out thank you.
App doesnt work anymore
This was my favorite app and was helping me tremendously with learning spanish. One day it just started getting stuck at the loading screen. I deleted the app and got it back but still its stuck on the M (main loading screen) and i cant move past that, log or sign in, nothing. Ive never seen anything like it and have no idea what the solution is. I hope the mango team will look into solving this soon, im extremely disappointed.
Great structure and information
I love how the information is presented and that you can listen to it on the go as well!! I just wish more lessons were available for Korean ^^
Still has bugs
I live in Germany, but I am not fluent in German. My husband is more fluent than I am and he greatly disliked the pre-test. I have not used this app in a while. After seeing the pre-test I’m wondering if updating the app was a good decision. The pre-test was weird. It was asking questions but not in the same way a normal German person would speak and even English speakers would not ask those same questions in that way. I also don’t like that every time you click a word all the words are scrambled. Maybe that’s cute for children, but not so great for me and my spouse. One of the frustrating things was the words we were looking for were not always present, or one tense of the word was there, but not the tense we wanted to use. Questions were answered wrong because the correct word was not present. For example a word we used was incorrect because it had an “s” at the end, but the correct spelling of the word we wanted was not present at the time of submission. I did not see a way to report errors in the pre-test. I am going to ask my German neighbor what she thinks to determine if using this program will be worth our time. Are people designing this program or is it Ai? That could potentially explain errors.
Paywall
It seems like a rather good app if you have the money, but you can only try out the first unit before having to get a subscription. The actual walking process is rather alright, although it can be difficult to understand how to mimic what it’s telling you to without knowing how to move your mouth. For example, making the throaty Dutch sounds, or how to move your tongue to make certain sounds in Spanish, etc.
best language app
Free with a library card and breaks down how to form sentences, use grammar, and pronounce words. The app got me to A2 spanish, so it is a great starting point! I wish there were more lessons for languages like Korean, but I like how there are so many languages on the app. It would be useful for traveling and I appreciate that there is no AI.!!!!
Still no Dark Mode and no Kanji
There’s only “night mode” when doing a lesson but not when navigating the app or using flash cards. Please add an app-wide dark mode. One of the languages I’m learning is Japanese, I’d really like to see more Kanji being used in the lessons. Kanji is as important to Japanese as Hanzi (Chinese characters) is for Chinese. Mango manages to use Hanzi for Chinese immediately. Please fully incorporate Kanji in Japanese lessons—like is done for Chinese with the Hanzi characters.
Almost perfect
I’ve been using it for like a day and it’s pretty good, and it teaches you important stuff first (unlike of Duolingo where it starts with fruits or something and you learn greetings much later). But the only thing I would like it a button to slow down the pronunciation so I can really understand it. Also I would to sometimes have the pronunciation in English (exp: weather = nal-ssi) because even though I know the alphabet I still can’t remember perfectly. But I do love that it teaches useful stuff first. It also has a button for pronunciation but you can skip it if you don’t feel like talking. Super great but I would love some small adjustments!

I got the app and started Arabic and it was really great at first but then after I completed 3 lessons it started asking me to pay and just wouldn’t let me move onto the 4th lesson. I’m not sure if I have to pay or something but yeah

I mean seriously. I have recommended this to all of my friends. It’s insane. If you really use the app and put in the effort, you will learn another language. Amazingly organized lessons, real speakers. It actually works. I never write reviews, but unbelievably good. Been using for 2 years at this point

You seriously have to pay $14 a month just to get more than three lessons Duolingo is kind of a money sucking app but it at least lets you do more than three for free lesson I was told this was free I do not recommend it
Cantonese
Was one of the better apps I have used to learn Cantonese. unfortunately they don’t have a lot of content for Cantonese like they do with other languages. I hope they update and add more lessons to the Cantonese portion

I am an 11 year old trying to learn French but to do that I need a good app that will teach me. Only there is one problem. There are only apps that I have to pay for that are actually good. This is one of those apps that I do not have to pay for especially if I have a library card. But there’s one problem I have a library card for the Grove family library in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. But this app does not accept Grove family library. I need it too. That way I can learn French easily and get everything I want to get done done other than not accepting all libraries. This app is a really good app. Unlike apps like Duolingo, this one does not say you are incorrect whenever you are which lifts my self esteem. Salut!
More material please
Love how the app helps with pronunciation and practicing listening and reading comprehension but it’d be awesome if Polish and Ukraine had more material on listening or reading conversation comprehension like what French, Russian etc have. Also while the Arabic course is extensive like the other major language course, help learning the Arabic alphabet as well for the other languages that don’t utilize Latin script or Cyrillic or maybe I missed something
AI
Just started using this the other day and it seemed ok I guess but I just had a popup that said “How would you rate our AI conversation partner?” Um…. I’m not going to pay money if a human being is not actually writing the lessons. I’m trying to actually learn a language not AI garbled trash. I specifically came here to get away from Duolingo’s AI trash. Very disappointed.
Already wanting more!
So far I’m loving this app. It’s so nice to study with resources dedicated to specifically Latin American Spanish— and I’m looking forward to diving into speciality units too. The library partnerships are so amazing and im recommending this resource to everyone I know. One request: please add more Korean units!! I’d love to continue learning more advanced Korean on this same app, instead of having to pick up elsewhere when I inevitably finish the existing lessons

When I go to pick the language I want to learn, (Canadian French), it just stays on the loading screen.

Needs improvements
I am taking the spanish course and the app doesn’t play the sounds reliably on my iPhone. I.e. the feature for recording my pronunciation doesn’t work 90% of times, it doesn’t play back what I recorded or the example. The same for those types of slides where I have to listen to some phrase without seeing the text. That’s very frustrating.

What if there were multiple voices/accents/dialects for each vocab/phrase/etc., for which can be done via feeding vocal training data to an AI model optimizing for the most realistic (or most likely to encounter) voices/accents/dialects in a particular region (e.g., Male British accent in London region speaking English, Female American voice in Midwest USA region speaking English, Female Chinese voice in Shanghai China region speaking Mandarin, etc.)?

Mango is great- although one thing. for some courses - NOT ENOUGH LESSONS. Spanish and French have listening and readings at the end. what about Croatian? My one request is to add some more lessons and activities in Croatian. Also maybe more grammar notes, to explain conjugations, noun cases and such. but it would def be 5 stars if croatian had those extra lessons

It’s a great app! And I love the idea but I speak a little bit of French and for educational reasons I wanted to learn more but some of it was wrong such as “ comment ça va?” They said it was “ ça va “ but that’s wrong so I feel like some more could be right, I’d give it 3 stars because most of it is right but more needs to be right, be aware always check
WAYYYYY better than Duolingo!
Discovered Mango through my library membership. It explains things in much detail and doesn't distract you with annoying cartoon characters and constant sales pitches like Duolingo. It offers some interestingn language choices like Icelandic (if they could add Luxembourgish, that would be awesome!!!) as well as fun things like Shakespearean Insults and Pirate.

i love this app so much and it has such a perfect teaching style. i’m currently learning korean and have 14 hours of study time. i also want to thank you for making it free for those with library cards, it’s really helpful. but i have one suggestion, could you guys allow auto play for the vocab review please? like the lessons you can autoplay, but you can’t with the vocab review cards. i think adding that would make the app perfect

I am someone who is passionate about learning languages but does not have the money to pursue lessons.If there were another way to support I.e by watching ads or donating or even through invitations it would be better than paying monthly which is what all apps seem to do.Especiallt since were in a crisis and everyone is locked in it would be a lot better if it were free and in the future I would like to pursue languages and make them them free on the App Store/online someday.But it is a great way to learn especially if someone struggled with Word orders and needed tips on how to structure a sentence.
