What people like

What they complain about

- No search function for articles
- iPad version lacks landscape mode
- Articles often show blank screens
Landscape mode for iPads, please
Long time Slate reader and Slate+ subscriber. I still use my green and purple patterned mug. Please bring back landscape mode for the iPad. That’s not a corner to cut. I enjoy Slate a lot less since the new app rolled out. Please consider bringing it back, soon, in a new version.
Crashes constantly
I love slate but hate their app. It crashes constantly. It takes me 5+ tries to open articles. This has been going on for months and updates have not fixed the issue.
One issue with app
Love Slate and its writing and podcasts. My one quibble is with the app. How come no search function?
Great content, if you can access it.
App frequently crashes when I try to open articles.
Latest update broke app
App isn’t showing the text of articles. When I click on any article, I get a blank white screen.
Podcast to written word
From Australia I first encountered Slate with the podcast Political Gabfest, a favourite weekly gem. Then Slow Burn, I consider the best ever Podcast, backed by brilliant research. Just new the written word. Slate has the authenticity and fearless independence usually only seen in outstanding public broadcasters.
Are we in 2011?
This is the buggiest app. I pay what - $120 a year for the privilege of an app the neither allows me to browse stories much less click into them. I go to the AppStore all the time praying for an update. They are periodically there, and do not fix the fundamental problems.
Better now
Hurrah! At last they changed the default feed back to ‘Recent’. It’s taken far too long.
Meh
The headlines are all sensationalized clickbait even if you’re a paid subscriber. The crosswords don’t automatically load the current day’s puzzle, sometimes reloading yesterday’s. If I leave a crossword for a couple hours and come back to it, it’s blank.
More ads, less content
Content is more difficult to find in the new version. Ads are everywhere. The only positive aspect is that they’ve weaned me off my slate habit with this terrible interface.
My fave app
I love all things Slate - Jacob, Mike, Virginia and everyone else. You keep me informed, entertained and hopeful. Thank you. Ed
Slate Plus is a ripoff
You pay $119 and can’t access the benefits. Customer support tries to help but is unable to do so. It is a shame because the content looks good. Don’t bother with Slate Plus. It’s so frustrating
App is fine. But “back” button is white on a white background
App is fine. But when reading an article, the “back” button is white on a white background. Please fix this.
Now two starts for half-assed iPad landscape support!
Upgrading to two stars, as the iPad version is no longer locked in portrait mode. Instead you get to view portrait mode just rotated and stuck in the middle with empty black bars on the side. Longtime Slate Plus member here. You’ve got to be kidding? On the iPad this app can’t rotate to landscape mode? I use my iPad Pro ~90% on the Magic Keyboard and in landscape. Hopefully this is all a big mistake. I’m going to go put a hot compress on my neck.
Content is great, but the tech could be better.
I joined Slate Plus to have access to ad-free podcasts and bonus material, especially for Slow Burn and Amicus. The Plus editions are supposed to show up in my Podcast app feed automatically, but they never do, so I have to go into the Slate app itself to listen. Not a big deal, but not as advertised.
Great news app
The Slate app works perfectly, no problems. Content is great & more necessary than ever since the election.
Glitchy
So glitchy that it shuts my phone down. And the podcasts in the app have commercials even for slate plus members (despite what they say)
None of the links ever show up!
In the articles with links to items- you can’t see the items or the links. And this app freezes for me quite a bit. Please update!!
No landscape mode on iPad
What am I missing? This is the ONLY news app I have that doesn’t go to landscape mode on my iPad. In this day and age that is unacceptable!
Doesn’t keep me signed in
And keeps saying there’s a payment error, when my subscription isn’t up for renewal until July.
Always interesting
Content and app of similar high quality and clarity.
App completely unstable
I keep checking back for updates, hoping the problem will be fixed. The app crashes constantly.
Great Mag
App recently fixed with update. Quality articles good mix of topics.
Fix the notification bug!
I love Slate. But there is a bug in this app where if you get a notification for a story on your lock screen and choose it, it will open the app on a black screen. I have to do a hard reset of the app and find the story manually. The transition from the notification into the story in the app is broken. Very annoying.
Not much Slate Plus content
I love Slate. The articles and podcasts are fantastic. However, there doesn't seem to be much extra content for us paying Slate Plus customers. I'm happy to pay so you stay in business, but it would be grand to get more for my money.
Great app
Easy way to access Slate articles on phone and iPad.
Not good
Doesn’t include search functionality anymore. The games listing is (now) set up so you can’t easily find previous games. The font resize function clips the last line of every paragraph. Not compatible with automatic light/dark phone os settings. Really baffling design choices.
Get this app
This is, in short, a top-quality news app. Don't buy it simply for it's purply colour, pleasing to the eye as it may be. Buy it for the quality of its content. This app proves the old cliche that 'you learn something new every day'. Be a sport. Download this bad boy.
Accessibility & Performance Issues Abound
Incompatible with Speak Screen. No support for system font size adjustments. The custom font size control is unintuitive placed relative to the toggle to activate it, its operation being finicky at best, and it probably took more work to build that than to simply use the existing system. Performance is pathetic, scrolling a simple text view with a few images and ads is jittery and stuttering. On a device with a 120hz display and plenty of power to scroll a *single news article*, it’s so ugly and distracting. I haven’t yet bothered to try voice control, but given the embarrassing state of this application I doubt anything works with it. It seems even the most basic applications are impossible for people to build these days. Let me know if you need a competent engineer.
Love slate but the app needs a lot of work
It’s clunky and crashes and searches are a problem
First class resource
One of my favourite 'go-to' sites for intelligent commentary and insight. Highly recommended.
Search?
Why is there no search on an app with thousands of articles? It's useless. And I'm a plus subscriber
Great content but app crashes
Love Slate's content and the app is easy to use and reasonably nice to look at. It's a shame it crashes so much. Especially when you try to view the different sections e.g. arts/news.
“Recent” crashes
I love the last format update of the Slate app, and as a Slate+ subscriber I tend to keep up with articles, so Recent is a great option to find what I haven’t already read. However, with th last update, going to Recent crashes the app for me as it’s loading the headlines. Otherwise I would be very pleased, this crash is very disappointing.
Great content, poor app
Slate is my favourite source for news and a leisurely read and I use this app many times a day, even if its got some pretty big flaws. Hardly any pictures will show (esp. annoying when an article is referencing a specific image or feature stats) and it glitches frequently. Still, for the content itself, highly recommended.
Best news app I've used
Super awesome just like Kurt Russell
Notifications to Nowhere
Slate Notification: breaking news about XYZ! Me: clicks notification Slate App: Black Screen Me: restarts the app, checks recent stories then searches for XYZ. Finds nothing. Conclusion: Slate constantly sends me notifications for articles that either aren’t on their app or I don’t have access to. It’s too bad. The app design is so bad because they actually have good journalists.
If you like the site, you'll like the App
A great view of reading slate on iOS devices. A more powerful search fiction is the main fault but otherwise a great app.
I prefer landscape mode!
I enjoy Slate content, but the new version insists on showing it exclusively in portrait mode on my iPad. Not a fan! Gove me the option of using my device the way I prefer.
great content but crashes a lot
I am a huge fan of Slate and read articles on this app about once a day. the articles are consistently interesting and well-written. but WHY is this app so buggy, it crashes basically every time i open it and it updates. not a big deal as just re-open the app but annoying.
Comprehensive and exhaustive.
I don't read anything else.
Discontinued subscription
Done
Informative
Informative, functional, user-friendly interface. Content is excellent if it's Americana you seek.
What, no landscape mode?
The app is not designed for iPad, no longer supports landscape mode, so it doesn’t work for me. Such a waste of excellent content. Hate to give up Slate+, but can’t support IT mediocrity in 2023. Hey Slate IT, why don’t you just ask a ChatBox how to do it?
Slow to load, seems buggy
Have to agree with those below who've found Slate slow to load. It can take forever for the home screen. If you open an article form the home screen it almost never load. Click through to the category screen, then click the same story, and it loads. Happens irrespective of quality of data connection (even on wifi). Just weird behaviour. Home screen should show stories in chronological order, as on the site's home page. Slideshows don't play in the app, so why not filter out those stories (or fix the slideshows). On the plus side: allows full screen reading without the ad bar - nice little usability concession. As for the content - if you're the kind of person who likes Slate, then this is the kind of content you will like.
Great app
Awesome app
App not working
Great content when you can see it; overall poor app. Click on stories but just get taken to a blank screen, despite subscription to Slate. Disappointing.
Fantastic app
Always great coverage
Disappointed with last update
I’ve been using this app for a couple years, but I can’t anymore. The recent update forces portrait view. I’ve always used landscape as my tired old eyes need the larger font. I’ll keep updating the app in the hope that my accessibility issue will be fixed some day.
Got bugs
It's nice to get all the articles in a simple format, but I can't get videos, slide shows or the DoubleX blog. If you are going to charge, the bugs should be sorted first! Awaiting updates!
