World news
Thank you for providing a great read BUT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT IN THE FOLLOWING Cannot choose which section to read , cannot change format of layout, I would like to start at c and then b ? The page keeps moving once an article is read and does not come back to the place . Started an article and once it has been read it does not go back to the same place .suddenly I am three columns down . Please help with these problems
Pages won’t turn
Recently in using the app the pages don’t turn when trying to read. When I swipe to turn the page it will go back to the front page, then when I click to re-open it takes forever (or doesn’t) re-open. Also, some articles won’t open when clicked on. This is a recent problem. I’ll cancel my subscription if this isn’t fixed as it’s taking too long (or not possible) to click through the paper.
Please add a dark mode!
It’s hard to reach such a white background at night or early morning
I don’t like the new online version
I don’t like the article version. I like to see the newspaper end go to the sections I want to read. I find the new version very “clunky”
Scrolling is broken
On both iPhone and iPad, scrolling the home page is horribly jumpy. Much worse on iPad. The home page will just start scrolling itself without touching the screen. Sliding up (backwards) seems to provoke it, but even that isn’t strictly necessary.
Thank you local journalists
The SDUT reporters continue to bring me the issues and analyses I want to read. Creative solutions for helping our unhoused and how it affects our budget choices are especially appreciated. I suggest an occasional feature where a question is posed and readers suggest ideas in short paragraphs.
Still no night mode
I have been a digital describes for years and there was a night mode on the old app. When the new app came out I sent a message to request this feature back since I often work and night and it makes it easier on the eyes to read the news in night mode. I was assured night mode was coming back, and… multiple update and still no night mode. The only positive the new app has is crossword puzzles. Bring back night mode.
App is sub par, content is worse
Failing newspaper with poorly written articles. More special interest than news. No more facts, just opinions from some 20 y/o journalism student
I Hate to be negative but
Please get better. I used to deliver the Evening Tribune when I was 10. I’m now 84 which will tell you all about my loyalty toward our local newspaper. Not so local anymore. Since you left town all we get is warmed over local coverage days old. The same old stories as last month only by a different reporter. Are there any writers that actually live in San Diego County? Are you just trying to wear us down so we subscribe to your LA rag. Disgruntled
Content
Content is good , but when you read an article is does not go back to the same place but gets lost . Need to go back to the same place . Getting old and need to have possibilities of enlarge the the letters .
I like it
Opens and reads like he paper version. Especially satisfying on iPad
Each fix is worse than the one before
Great update, not. Now o can’t open the newspaper. Just add for north coast rep. Fix it please.
Review
Generally good app but fails to go back to same location after finishing a story. Always have to shuffle back to where you previously were.
Low tech app
Why is it impossible to have the paper stay on the article or page you were reading when you stop for a minute? When you return to the app you have to start over on page 1. There isn’t even a reasonable way to jump back to the section you were in.
Print Function Gone
Print function is gone in recent update. Please bring it back so subscribers can easily print puzzles, articles to share with family members lacking tech skills.
Still the Best San Diego News
This is the go to place for San Diego news
Latest update inoperable
Terrible upgrade. Can’t access “newspaper” without automatically selecting the first article. Forget accessing sections anymore. Totally useless.
Cancellation
Please cancel subscription
Please be unbiased!
Fox News, CNN news, PBS and the SD Union Tribune too- why can’t we just get the news like we used to without the biases. I don’t want to read your article with your opinion - that’s what the “Opinion” section is for. Ugh! Please report the news like it is with facts! Thank you
Forced updates
I personally dislike being forced to update the app with each new version. There should be a choice in case I’m in a hurry or don’t want to update in that specific moment. There are many good reasons for the option to postpone such action. Please add an ability to skip unless there’s a critical issue requiring immediate updates.
my home town paper
The UT has a pretty good job of reporting on stories throughout the entire San Diego County region.
Marketing Director Should be Fired
I signed up for the $1 for a year online subscription. Occasionally I am able to log in but not often. Everyday I get another offer. I tried to sign up again but was told I have an account. Please quit contacting me.
Cheapening the online experience
For months I’ve enjoyed accessing the ePage Cover of the SDUT on my lower priced online access account , until a week ago when that access was blocked unless I pay for a full subscription. I don’t read the SDUT often enough to merit paying for a full subscription. Any more cheapening of the experience will have me biding farewell to the Union Trib.
Needs dark mode
The app has gotten progressively worse.
Comics
Hard to find the comics with this format
Wow, wow wow! Kudos
I just downloaded the app on both my iPad and iPhone, and even though I usually wait a bit before writing a review, I couldn’t resist sharing my thoughts right away! I’m really impressed with how easy it is to save articles and navigate through the different sections. Everything, from the pictures to the text, is visually appealing and makes the experience enjoyable. If you haven’t checked out this app yet, I think you’re in for a delightful surprise!
4/14/26 update
My app had to update in order to read the paper, now articles are only loading what’s on the current page I’m on, not the full article. If you swipe through to the page where the article continues, it won’t let you select the rest of the article to read. Please fix this bug!
Games
Cannot get the crossword puzzles to work on iPhone since latest upgraded. Other games are very difficult to use.
Jumps around
Every time I’m forced to update this app, I hope this problem will be fixed - it makes a click sound and then jumps to other sections on its own and you have to a scroll back to where you were. It’s really annoying. Please fix.
Disappointing value for a paid local news subscription
I subscribed to the San Diego Union-Tribune expecting in-depth local reporting, but the experience has been underwhelming. The app and website lack a dark or night-mode option, which makes reading extremely difficult for users with light sensitivity. The content itself feels thin—more photo galleries and surface-level event coverage than meaningful reporting. Much of it reads like fluff rather than journalism that explains what’s really happening in San Diego. For anyone looking for serious coverage of city and county issues, Voice of San Diego offers far more researched, substantive, and informative reporting.
Cannot find the comics
Impossible to find the comics. Very unimpressed with the app.
New update is worse
I was getting used to the last update and then it was changed again. This update is clumsy and slow to load. I don’t like the arrows you have to click (sometimes several times) to navigate to the desired view. The font on my iPad is very small and if I make it larger it doesn’t carry from one article to the next. Thus, in article view I have to change the font in every single article, and before I scroll down, because the font option is only at the top. The font option in the settings does not work. Also, the photos in article view don’t include the captions, so I have to switch back to page view if I want to read them. It’s clumsy and ineffective. Surely you can do better than this. I’d take the last update over this one. Please fix this app and make it user friendly!!
Fix it and then leave it alone!
This newspaper used to fit perfectly on my iPad 12.9 inch screen. Someone decided to tweak and mess with it and it no longer fits. None of you have noticed? Please fix it so I can read it vertically again and then leave it alone. If it ain’t broke don’t mess with it. I have to pinch and zoom to read and then again before I can turn the page. Come on now. Test fully before releasing an unneeded update.
No dark mode
The navigation is difficult on this app and I wish there was a setting to switch to dark mode.
Problem
Several updates ago the full size paper will not appear on my screen. I was able to talk to one of your people who said she would get back to me. That never happened. The paper is three quarter size on my iPad??????
Each update is worse
Each supposed enhancement to the paper has been worse than the last. Two things that no longer exist that should be brought back. First, you can’t download the newspaper to read it off-line, like on an airplane! Second, you can’t share & text an interesting article to someone else to read. Most other newspapers allow you to share 5 to 8 articles a month.
Updates.
If this one is an improvement, it will be the first time. Glitchiest website on my computer. I think you guys should be able to get a professional to do your web work.
Offline reading requires never closing the app
As the title implies. Offline reading only works if you download the digital paper while being online and then never close the app. If you close the app, or the OS closes it because of memory or processor usage, it’s not possible to access the offline paper because the “Sections” tab options don’t load unless the app is online. I’m writing this as a review because I tried to submit this as a bug, but the contact/support button in the app directs me to a page asking me to subscribe, which I obviously already do, and provides no contact info, at least not within the app. Also, the bug where saving the paper offline on some days makes it crash the app until you delete the offline copy is still present, I reported that months ago. I only get to actually have an offline copy maybe 4-5 days per week. Alden has been degrading the functionality of this app ever since they bought the UT. The fresh coat of paint is not hiding the fact that the UI has become increasingly less flexible and less intuitive over time, and there are numerous crashes, freezes, and blank screen bugs that seem to increase in frequency with every update. I’m going to keep trying to support our valuable local journalists with a subscription, but it’s getting harder to justify with the increased difficulty of even being able to consistently access the digital version of the paper that I’m paying for.
