Orca is very Intuitive for me!
So far Orca the App already feels like ‘home’, and I don’t receive the Orca Core 2 for probably another week or two… it’s route planning isn’t perfect but Man is it quick!
Didnt route
Couldn’t get it to route a single trip. Just kept saying unable to find route.
Feature request
In the Netherlands there exist a high problem with waterplants 'fontijnkruid'. They apair in the Markermeer between May and September. There is an website www.waterplanten.nu that shows where they are. It would be great if Orca can show this as well.
Extreme problems still exist
The app is intermittent in Core connectivity and autopilot control, among other problems

For høy pris!
Best ever navigation app
Everything in one place at an affordable price. I use it as Safety Contact Ashore for a fleet of three boats. As a charity value for money is important. With Orca I get an easy to use app. Can assess and monitor passages against plan from the shore. In one app I can see weather, wave height, wind current position of any one of my vessels. From that I can calculate estimated time if arrival. When I am at sea I now have the app I dreamed of. Thank you Orca.
Charts not accurate
After using Navionics from when it first launched I wanted to have an alternative after Garmin managed to degrade an excellent app. Unfortunately Orca did not deliver. Many charts in British Columbia coastal waters are “stitched” together in a haphazard manner with critical depth and depth contours missing and being dangerous for navigation use. The AIS, weather and tide overlays are better than Garmin. Current information is not reliable.
Works greatly for me on my tug
I have the hardware orca 2, so with that in mind. IT works great. I use it for navigation, weather, tides, etc. It seems to integrate well with some of my boat hardware, GPS, Volvo engine data.
NOT working on Lap Top
It does NOT make it clear this nav software requires a Tablet for its to Work ? I paid for Orca Core and 12 month free software. Downloaded it on to my Mac lap top but no links to Manage it at all . It appears it will only work on I pads or The likes of a Samsung Tablet Bit disappointed Make sit clear of get it to work on lap tops
Fabulous presentation
We are on a cruise from Bergen in Norway to the Russian border in Kirkenes. The Orca app has been a wonderful companion while we cruise.
don’t rely on it
does not calculate trip times with any accuracy, using the app on a mac is cumbersome
Puute
Orca puhelinversio ei näytä purjehdittua trackiä
Route Length
Not being able to route a 200mi route is disappointing - that’s not very long in the scheme of weather routing for sailing
Not quite
So I’ve been a pilot for years. ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot and intuitive. Not so much with this app.
Great
Very Helpful
No internet AIS
It does not show AIS ships in the free version. Totally misleading
Orca Axiom
Works Great in PNW
Used Orca on a 47’ sailboat during a round Vancouver island race. Worked amazingly well. While we didn’t always follow its predicted line for sailing, it always makes the eta within 20 minutes. Very impressed. Chart coverage is great in the PNW. Auto route woes great too.
Terribly broken
Took me forever to create an account. Apple sign in didn’t work. For some silly reason I spent time to it figure out (despite worthless error messages, a confused fire base backend, and an unhelpful AI that asked for my phone number). I guess I was motivated by “free”. Well, it ended up being a waste of time as this app doesn’t work as a basic chart plotter. Good luck pulling up details of a bouy. If the app doesn’t feel like rendering text alongside it at the zoom level you’re at, well I guess you’re not going to get any more info. The “at this location” screen is perversely too sparse on data “starboard lateral mark” AND too verbose as overlapping restricted areas take all available screen real estate and you can’t even scroll to the last ones. As far as data goes, this is purely coastal. Inland rivers in the US have occasional bridge heights listed, nothing else. Complete waste of my time and not worth any space on my phone (even though free). Maybe in a couple years if real mariners start using it.
Has Potential
I have been using orca for a couple of months and it is definitely a great solution for upgrading your boat tech without breaking the bank. It works well with Raymarine, Garmin and B&G equipment. The mapping is highly detailed and it’s easy to setup. On the negative side the customer is a little slow to resolve issues.
Henner
Finnes mye bedre rimeligere alternativer.
Not there
I looked at the charts and made a route in St Augustine Fl. This chart would have made me afraid to come in the inlet. It is just a base chart with no ad ons. The inlet has no depth info between jetty and ocean. So there is no way to see the shallows. The charts need work. I would have bought the system if the charts were of navionics or Aquamaps quality.
Great app and expandable
This is a great app that does everything that it says that it does. Provides good routing and the NOAA charts are good visually. I expanded this to include the Core 2, which connects to all other instruments on our boat. I like it alot.
Hopeless
Try as I might I cannot get this to easily plot a course. Unimpressed
So far so good, but
Downloaded Orca app onto my iPad, looks good so far. I’m thinking it will be a good back up for my fixed Garmin plotter. I’d be interested in upgrading to the paid version, if only Orca would provide a simple list of differences between the free and paid versions. What would I get extra to justify the price? What are the differences ????
Unusable in Mexico
This app shows promise and could be great in the US. I’m currently sailing in Mexico and there are no depths even in well charted areas. Disappointed as i like many others are looking to get away from navionics.
Not quite there
Some features good. However some important information is missing from charts. So I have to use another chart system. Routing does not include tidal streams, so just shortest route and time calculation is the same with favourable tide, or adverse flow.
Game Changer
Having installed the app and a Core 2 alongside my Axiom system, I’m hugely impressed. I was going to use it as a backup/fall back in the event my Axiom system failed, but I’m now increasingly using it as my main system. I love the fact that when creating a route, it always finds the bay, anchorage. Marina I’m searching for (unlike the clunky Navionics app). Being able to show weather/wind/waves along an entire route and altering the departure time or day to see how the weather evolves is unique and game changing for me. The fact I can control my autopilot from my phone, from my iPad, even from my watch, with instant response, is impressive. I can now sit anywhere on my boat and have full instrumentation and control over the boat without being glued to the helm. The ability to instantly transfer an Orca route to Axiom is simplicity itself. Highly recommended.
Clunky
Not great. Pretty slow even on my iPhone 13 Pro
Very good app missing some final touches
As much as I would love to give this app a 5 star review as I love the direction it is going. You are missing some final features / touches. Apparent wind speed on the rose should be an option. Most sailor work with AWS for sail changes and a lot of decision making. Having TWS as the main indication does not work for me. Anchor alarm. I have not managed to figure it out and use the remote monitoring option. Auto routing works nicely. You diagrams could be a bit more descriptive. Cannot make sense from the height of the bar how strong the wind will be. Polars for catamarans. I could not find my polars, Leopard 44, and looking for similar catamarans I found out that there are only handful of options. Weather anchoring would be a great add on to. We can elaborate a lot on this one, but for sure you can present good options for tonight and the next couple of days from data you pull from Navily. Another big plus for me would be support for Samsung smart tv. I can do it with screen share but native support would be a big one.
Advertising
IT is Dangerous to block the screen with advertisements while navigating. That’s made this app not reliable
Not Ready - But Promising
I’m liking the concept. It doesn’t seem to have a way to connect to my already-on-the-WiFi NMEA data through my Vesper Cortex. I will keep track of this app as it develops.
Excellent
Excellent software with good autorouting and control of my Raymarine autopilot. Shame about the customer support which is slow and disjointed. Pity, as this lets it down.
App won’t work
App won’t work with iPad mini running iOS 12.5.7. It just hangs after the first screen

Poor
Mye bra, men noen mangler

Great app
Hangs
Won’t run on my iPad. Just hangs at the startup screen with orca logo. Disappointing.
Kartet henger
Einfach zu bedienen, viele Nice to have wie Internet-AIS etc..
Melding
Kartet kunne inneholdt mer fager. Dashbord burde inneha «Time» ved ankomst. Kompasskurs i tall.
App
Great app easy to use
Don’t bother with this app it doesn’t even work
Download as this seamed like what I was after Couldn’t even get the demo to run A complete waste of time
Great app, poor battery management
I tried Orca on my last trip from Elba to Alghero. The app performed really well and has a wealth of information. The only downside, and it’s a big one, is that it zaps your battery. On my iPhone 12 mini I could only use it for a few hours and then I had to plug it back into a spare battery. If they can fix this I would wholeheartedly recommend Orca, but as it stands I prefer Navionics purely because I can use it all day without depleting my battery.
Poor communication
Downloaded this app because it seemed to be just what I was looking for. Even better that Orca also offer the Core which is also the kind of nav hardware I need. The disappointment came when I took my iPad out to sea to try the app. Even though tethered with 3 bars of 4G Orca just didn’t work. I used the in-app chat to ask why it wasn’t working and if there was any key for the symbols (standard with a paper chart and essential for someone like me who is new to sailing). I got no reply and they just keep sending spam emails. A shame for Orca because I would have bought the Core for £399 but I have absolutely no confidence that I will get any support, should I need it down the line. 3 stars because the charts and course plotter is great, 2 stars off for poor communication Update: The Orca team did actually get back to me after the weekend. 3 stars seems a bit harsh now but I’m still no fan of chatbots or spam
