Lack of storage
I am paying for extra storage but they still don’t have the extra storage capacity available and keeps saying extra storage is coming but they has done so for several months. No one replies to your questions or when the upgrade in storage is coming.
Recommend to all new parents
I absolutely love this app! I find myself looking through and adding to it almost daily. Now I have a second child I often look back at the first at the same stage to remind me of when the older one was that age too, it’s so quick to scroll back. I deducted a star because I wish it took a few less steps to upload.
Great App, but…
The App has been great, but when you close your account they continue to charge you, so make sure you cancel your subscription on your side. Once account is closed you can’t get hold of them either! It’s a shame to end this way given the years I’ve been with them :(
Ok. But expensive and lacking in its chat function
It’s a nice enough app that looks good, is user friendly even for old folks and pushes pictures in a good manner. But it’s expensive compared to a free solution lige Google Drive. And I just can’t believe how limited the chat function is. That’s where it could shine. As it stands, you can’t post pictures or memes in the chat, and you can’t add reactions to other’s posts without alerting everybody in a new message. Also, it doesn’t recognise links and you can’t copy text from posts. All these functionalities are very common text capabilities in nearly every other platform.

Great app. Broken widget sadness
My husband and I both use the app for our children and our nieces and nephews. It’s brilliant, permitting us to update family with photos in a private setting. That being said, both my husband and I have an iPhone and whilst his widget works, mine remains black. The “a year ago today” was my favourite bit, and mine no longer works, whilst my husbands does. Both my phone and the app are up to date and the settings are the same as my husbands. The developers upon asking say it’s a bug- but why is it impacting my phone and not his? It’s a brilliant app otherwise. Please fix this issue.
They keep raising the price
Had since 2015. Was like $2 a month then. Now it’s $7. They’re just banking on families not wanting to lose access to photo sharing. do yourself a favor and start out with a free photo sharing system for family cause it’s gonna be more expensive than a Netflix subscription eventually
Too many emails
Basically the app seems fine but it seems almost impossible to turn off the excessive email notifications.

I love the back then app! Since many viewers are grandparents, please help us out and make the font larger in the “ comments “ section! It’s so tiny we cannot easily see it!

I got this app when it was life cake and then it was took over and rebranded as back then. All the lovely features have changed and the charge is just too much per month to keep MY photos of my child accessible. I didn’t mind paying the one off charge a year which was about 30 odd pound but there is no option for that now it’s just a monthly payment which works out a lot more per year. I feel like I have to keep the app as most of my memories are loaded on and it is a nice place to keep them but unfortunately at a price.
Not bad
This is an ok app. It has the core features we were looking for, but it lags some extras that we be nice to have. An example is the ability to connect the app to your other devices in order to display a slideshow of memories on your smart TV, through google chrome, or on your PC or Smartphones screen saver. You can download the pictures and videos, but they come with rather obscure titles. This is a shame since it has all the meta data to name them after the children on it and the date it was taken. I could go on, but the button line is that the app is great, but you should check the market for apps with just a few more features. Last but not least: the app had a makeover a few years ago. While your pictures where transfered, they lost all comments and “hearts” from family members. Even worse, they raised the price many fold from one day to the other. We would have found a new app at that point were it not for the enormous amount of pictures already in the app. So be careful… Before this happened we recommended the app to all parents to be. Now… No 😅.

Good but could use improvements
I’ve used the app for just over a year now and it’s brilliant however it takes ages to upload videos from 5 second videos to 30 seconds and it eats the wifi when uploading. Photos upload almost instantly but videos take ages. And in the store it’s always the same stuff there’s never new stuff in there I emailed about making a memory book but still waiting. Other then that it’s a great app to look back on memories
Not Enough Storage
We loved Lifecake so assume this would be similar but 1gb of free memory isn’t reasonable with multiple children. Looking for a new app to share photos with fam now after nearly 6 yrs of living Lifecake. :(
Gute App, fehlende Übersetzung
Grade für die ältere Generation wäre so langsam mal eine Übersetzung nötig, die gab‘s beim Vorgänger Lifecake schon, und die App ist ja jetzt auch nicht mehr brandneu. Für die deutsche Lokalisierung kann ich gerne behilflich sein! So ist die App für alle „nicht Englisch sprechenden“ nutzbar, aber nur mit Hilfe und Erklärungen, das geht doch sicherlich besser!

BackThen is the perfect way for grandparents and any “absent” family and friends to keep up with the growth and development of little ones that they love but perhaps can’t see very often. And it’s private and safe.

I have been using Back Then for almost 13 years now at $4.99/month. I have lost photos and videos from the app. They do what they want. That is $780. Now they want to increase the monthly rate on me by 35%! It was great while it lasted but im officially giving deuces to back then. Not woth the price when they do whatever they want with your photos and videos. Some get saved some do not.

This app only allows people who are invited to write comments or likes for photos and not people from anywhere which doesn’t maybe you should try adding an option of adding friends with there Bio or just make people pick friends, on a friend list that would good for you with your parents permission

Leider keine Alternative zu Lifecake
Ich nutze seit Jahren lifecake, welches nun seine Türen schließt. Backthen wird als Nachfolger von lifecake genannt. Nun kann man theoretisch die timelines von lifecake auf Backthen automatisch übertragen und promt muss man ein Abo abschließen, für (momentan) 200GB, weniger geht „im moment nicht (ein Schelm, wer Böses dabei denkt)... sorry aber soviel benötige ich die nächsten 10 Jahre nicht. Eigentlich schade drum, das auf diese Art und Weise versucht wird Geld zu verdienen.

The price of this app has gone up so much in the last two years. I think it’s too much for what it is now.
Love this app
I love this app and have been using it since day 1! We transferred over from a previous app and love all the new features such as printing photos and Huply for the animals. My only issue is the upload speed. Huply seems to be able to upload photos at a much faster rate than back then. I take a lot of photos and often have to leave my phone to upload them over night. It also seems to get stuck when uploading quite a lot which can only be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the app. I have to do this about once a week. If these issues were fixed it would be so much easier to use.

Can not download photos to computer
So far the app is exactly like Lifecake. Sucks that my whole family (7 grand-parents and more aunts and uncles) has to switch over and they’re running into issues and that I can’t follow my nephews and nieces until all of their parents do (IF they choose to do the switch). Got my refund from apple for my 95$ year’s subscription that I had purchased weeks before the shut down thankfully. So far the down side is that I can’t download the photos and videos from BackThen to my computer which was a fantastic feature that I used regularly on Lifecake.

Always crashing
Great app, but a possible notification bug?
I started using it as my brother and sister-in-law wanted a safe place to share pics of my niece. Such a great idea, and the app is mostly great! However, the thing that is really irritating, and potentially a bug somewhere, is that I have turned off all marketing notifications, yet I still receive annoying notifications from the app with offers for purchasing VIP or physical gifts with photos on them. I would class that as marketing notifications no? I just want notifications about photo uploads, I don’t want to be continuously advertised stuff I have no intention of buying. Hope this will be looked at.

Great app, improves constantly
We’ve used this app since we had our first almost 8 years ago. Our four kids entire lives are in this app (which is also terrifying should they ever shut down completely). We love the tagging and filtering system as well as abilities to add stories and milestones, and LOVE adding videos. Things we wish for in future updates: the photobooks that automatically create leave me wanting so a way to api into Shutterfly or similar for total books (including stories, comments from family/friends) would be amazing . I would also love a way to purchase dvds or compiled videos as a “home video”.

With Lifecake closing I figured I would give this recommended app a try, well it was a disappointment. On Lifecake I had plenty of storage left before I would have had to buy more storage but with Back Then you only get 1GB free and the only other option was to pay $7 a month for 200GB. No thanks, I have gone with a different app that offers unlimited for free.

We have loved lifecake for 4 years and will really miss it. But $7.99 per month, month after month, year after year is just too steep for us. It’s a shame. I wish Lifecake’s independent founders the best with this new app. Thank you for lifecake. I’m sad to see it go
