GAIA is #1
GAIA is the best hiking and mapping app out there, and I’ve used many.
Trash
This app is borderline unuseable (16 pro max). Constant multi second lag for any action. Freeze/crash etc. No 3d maps. What a joke. I had Gaia on Android devices years ago and it worked perfectly. Will be spending the year I’ve paid for looking for a better option until I cancel my subscription.
Great app, please fix CarPlay
I use this for hiking, hitting fire and logging roads on my motorcycle and getting around those same places with my truck. Great app, best I’ve seen so far. Only gripe I have is that you have to have the map layers opened on displayed on your phone/tablet before CarPlay starts up or the map doesn’t display right. A fix for CarPlay stability would be great!
So much potential ruined by a few things
2 things that really bothers me: Can't snap a route to a trail when offline (why???) No free roaming navigation map with the apple watch (just copy footpath app)
Have been using Gaia; but broken CarPlay is killing it
Have been using Gaia for years and have been very happy with it and the CarPlay use. Recent updates have broken CarPlay where it will not show any map (downloaded or not). This is a huge disappointment and contemplating dropping Gaia in favor of other solutions which would be a pain since I love the features and use of gaia
Professional use
Gaia has been extremely valuable to me in my professional capacity of inspecting commercial industrial scale projects. More user-friendly than normal GIS and the ability to store all of my data in one spot has been extremely valuable.
Confusing
Downloaded the app after copilot recommended it. Had no clue how to use it or even search for trails. Was so confusing it was useless. Deleted app 5 minutes after downloading
Great app
5 out of 5. Terrace search and rescue ,easy and accurate great user friendly
Everything is paid
Forces you to create an account, to access any modes, layers, etc. it’s all paid. They use public maps like OpenStreetMaps, which are free, and charge for it. Don’t get the hype.
Hot mess
The site works perfectly but the app sometimes decides it doesn’t want to or the account isn’t valid and don’t even think about downloading a map or syncing data
The Navigation Tool I Trust Outdoors
The one app I consistently rely on for trail navigation whenever I’m out exploring the outdoors.
Confusing and glitchy
I had a lot of hope for Gaia. I’ve used it for many years and expected product improvements over time would lead to a more reliable, intuitive, easier to navigate, more performant app. Unfortunately, Outside has not invested in this product and it has frequent glitches and a horribly complex user interface.
Latest update is much better
After years of decline, the latest update is excellent. A better map with fewer errors and a more sensible interface. I can recommend this as the best hiking app I’ve used. There are still issues like fixing the default track name. But overall, I’m grateful that they’ve made some good changes.
Can’t add past hikes anymore
I love this app and used to praise it, but now I can’t record my previous hikes manually without paying. I’m forgetful and don’t always remember to hit the record button when I’m out, so I appreciated being able to track it manually after the fact. Can’t do that anymore without a premium subscription now 👎🏻
Please please please fix CarPlay
I love Gaia over the competition, have used it for years… and I’d love to get back “off” X… buuuuut Gaia CarPlay is garbage. Fails to load layers without kicking it, stops updating location if the phone screen goes to sleep, and other quirks that make relying on it impossible. Sad. Please spend some dev sprints on fixing all these problems. Read these reviews, read the support tickets many have submitted for years, read Reddit…
Super useful
I would be confused which way to go during hikes with lots of intersections and turns. Gaia has saved me more times than I can count.
Is the base map downloaded?
Steep learning curve and the Gaia websites aren’t helpful. It’s very difficult to confirm if the maps have downloaded for off grid reference. I regret this purchase and getting my $60 back seems unlikely.
No 3D map on iOS
It is disappointing to pay the same price for premium, yet not get access to 3D maps using the app on iOS.
Recent Update Issues
Regular update wiped out 2-3 years of tracks and waypoints. The subscription was current and login was present, but it hadn’t been syncing. Double check your current sync status BEFORE updating. Any help from the developers would be hugely appreciated - it appears (to storage) that the data is still present.
Great Maps, So-So App
Gaia has some of the best maps for off roading, overlanding and in general enjoying the outdoors. However, the app is only ok. Map downloads are comically slow and difficult to setup. In the era of TB phones, why can’t I just download whole states like in other apps? Why does a download of 100MB take minutes on gigabit connection? Relatedly, sharing of plans and routes is needlessly complicated. And the Car Play app sometimes can’t show maps the phone app has for some reason. It is all worth it because the maps are great. But I wish the app was better.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I use GAIA for my overlanding. I find the app very accurate and user friendly. I find it better than onX for what I use gps mapping for. You won’t be disappointed!
Lost my data
Some changes a while back locked me out of my data (recorded tracks, etc.). Numerous support requests went unanswered. Awful app.
Wondering what other app I can use!
New design is clunky and needless. Why fix what isn’t broken? And the app still doesn’t fix what IS broken: glitchy map layers, crashing….
It was great until Outside Mag
I like the USGS Topo layer, but it seems to me the resolution took a significant hit on both the phone app and web interface.
Most reliable hiking app
This is by far the the most reliable hiking app I’ve used. Excellent quality and accuracy.
No customer support
I absolutely LOVE this app. I can’t imagine life without it. I recommend it ALL THE TIME to strangers on the trail. BUT the only customer support available now is a stupid AI chat bot that is not at all helpful. It offers to open a support ticket, and says someone will email me shortly, but I’ve been lost to a black hole. I have a problem that needs to be solved, and AI isn’t helping. REAL HUMAN PLEASE
Best for Prints (Canada)
Gaia has proven as a powerful tool for printing physicals of various top maps. Has relatively good integration with different layers and is easy to maneuver. Still needs pairing with other platforms as occasionally the roads and lines are missing. Would still recommend pro version for backcountry planning and plotting.
The iOS version is the poor cousin to the Android version
I started using Gaia after seeing a friend use it on his Android phone. However, the iOS version is not the same and is missing some of the best features, like 3D maps, elevation profiles and track direction indicators. I have subscribed to this app for a couple of years now in the hope that these features would be implemented on iOS but sadly this app has not evolved and I am now switching to an alternative.
I’m doing the two week free trial
I’m doing the free trial before I decide to pay for this app. How long does it usually take to download everything needed to use the app?
Extraordinaire
J’adore planifier mes sorties de moto hors route avec Gaia …simple et extrêmement efficace
This app runs in background
POS WILL NOT SHUTDOWN
Very simple
The app is very easy to use if an old man can use it anyone can 😆😆.
Routes don’t snap to trail
I have loved using this app for years, but I’m honestly considering switching to an alternative because of how frustrating the route making is in the app. Sometimes it works just fine, but over half the time it will not snap to the trail no matter how hard I try. Turns a quick route assessments into a completely frustrating experience.
It’s ok
Other apps provide the same, some even more. But this app also works fine. Worth the download.
Great gps app!
I like how you can just take a picture for way point to find your way back. Saved me a few times in the bush
Crashes within 30 seconds every time
I have been a loyal paying customer for many years but the app has become unusable because of crashes literally every single time I open it within 30 seconds. Latest version of iOS, iPhone 17 pro, latest version of Gaia. I will update this review if this is fixed.
no elevation
When you tap a place on the map, elevation data is only available online. While you can estimate the elevation from contours, it could be easier if the app can do it too when offline.
Dropped Nat Geo Trails layer
I’ve used the GAIA app for years but they no longer support the National Geo Trails map layer. I used that layer about 90% of the time as it provides detail that none of the other options do. I’m shopping for a new mapping App. Outside took away the value
Lacking in Canada
I have used this app for many years and love it, however a lot of map layers are not offered in Canada and the maps are becoming quite outdated vs apple and google maps.
Wooooowww
Dope shi
Suddenly So Bad
This app used to be great, but the quality of the maps has gotten really bad. They took away National Geographic Maps, which were excellent. 6 years ago, I bought a 5 year subscription for $50. Now it is $60 for only 1 year. With the degradation in Map Quality, I won’t be renewing.
Please add Family Sharing
The subscription is not cheap! Could you please add Family Sharing so that my spouse can also use it when she goes hiking without me? Otherwise great app!
No longer the best gps app
Been a user for almost 10 years. Gaia took a huge step backwards with the recent loss of Nat Geo Trails Illustrated Maps and the World Imagery Satellite coverage. Nothing Gaia provides now comes anywhere close to the detail those layers had.
Cell coverage its good off cellular NO GOOD
I used Gaia for example on canoe trip in NWT of Canada to track hikes and each day we travel to new camp via canoe and it NEVER kept a single track = BRUTAL
Used to work
I’ve been using this app for a while now and until recently it worked fine. I now can’t delete tracks or routes at all because there is no longer any delete option. I tried contacting tech support and they want my credit card info………not happening…….when you pay a yearly fee for something this is ridiculous. I’m disappointed that the guys doing the updates can’t fix this issue.
Crashes
The go to for so many years but crashes during downloads and route creation are making it tough to stay.
Ganz toll
Haben damit 3 Wochen in Neuseeland unseren Track gezeichnet und mussten 2 mal zurückfinden. Ganz toll! Jeden Cent wert!
Needs polishing
I am shocked this app has such a high rating. The navigation is not at all intuitive. It’s functional and there’s a lot of potential and I’m sure those who use it regularly are able to get used to it but it’s just so painful to get started with. Hard pass unless you already know you need it.
Works good
Seemed to work well but then it’s the only gps app I’ve use so can’t compare. Did the job well for what I wanted but unfortunately I got logged out and didn’t use it for quite some time. When I logged back in the app was no longer free. I don’t use GPS enough to pay for it, I just used it to mark areas/locations on our property. Another disappointing thing was that you now have to log in through another companies website to use it and then find this particular app on there. Not very impressed at all.
