Froze during JMT hike
While the water and comment features are good, do not rely on this for your navigation. After day 3 it quit working. When I opened the app it just froze. Restarting phone and app did nothing. A friend off trail gave suggestions through my Garmin in Reach but none worked. The app froze a couple of days later for the person I was hiking with. It’s unacceptable for a back country navigation app to completely lock up and become useless. Fortunately we had paper maps and used Strava to track time and miles traveled. HAVE MAPS DOWNLOADED ON A DIFFERENT APP. DO NOT RELY solely on FarOut.
Used it for 10+ years with only 2 freeze issues
In 2025 and 2026, I found the app completely freezes up after recording the hikes on the John Muir Trail for 4 days without having cell service to connect back to the mothership. The app would open, but would immediately freeze up with no buttons working until I killed the app. This was devastating in the middle of a long thru hike. I had to delete the app and reinstall it to get it to work again and that lost the track recording I did for those days. This is a major bug.
The Bandwagon of Mediocrity!
FarOut, an essential app for all hikes! Glad to see they hopped on the modern app development bandwagon of unstable glitchy mediocrity. New aesthetics > functionality. All these apps change for the sake of change and nothing more, using the same cookie cutter formula and it is soooooooooooo bad.
Great, but very limited . . .
I hope this review answers some questions I wish I knew. I had to purchase one month subscription to get answers. The customer service for this app sucks, there is no contact phone number, only email and I never did get a response, which is why I rate it 3 stars. I mostly hike/backpack in Washington State. I purchased the PCT section for WA. The information available for campsites, water sources and current trail conditions is invaluable for trip planning. However, you cannot deviate from the PCT trail when entering trip segments. For instance, if you wanted to go camp at Waptus Lake, and then continue to Spectacle Lake via Pete Lake, it will not let you drop waypoints along this route. Buying a subscription does not “unlock” more trails so you could enter waypoints along this route, you are restricted to only the PCT. In my opinion, if you want trail information for specific trails, just purchase that section. For WA state, there are very few trails available, mostly the PCT and some short hikes in the SE portion of the Olympics. I cancelled my monthly subscription after one week of disappoint, and will only purchase the trail sections I need, which gives you lifetime access. Thru hiker essential
Fantastic for thru hiking. Don’t know what I would’ve done without it. My only improvement idea would be a rating system for how hard a trail is based on conditions. Not elevation but how technical a section is.
Buggy
Long standing disappearing comment bug remains unfixed. Been a problem for over a year and multiple versions. Should be a five star but I have zero confidence in the app.
Great for multi-day backpacking trips
I downloaded this on recommendation by my friend who goes backcountry trips. I downloaded and saw that there are 2 options. One single trail map that you pay for and will be yours, or you subscribe for a time and explore different trails. I found the subscription to be more useful, though for through hikers one trail may be useful. I found them to be expensive, that is why 4 stars. I am yet to see how it turns out. I could map my next backpacking trip on this and see the water sources, campsites, shelters and so far it looks good! Much better than onX in my opinion.
App is Buggy
Overall the app offers a great experience. I have purchased all the PCT Apps and used for many years. There is one major issue that all of you should be aware of. It has been around awhile and still not fixed. Do not have the app open while turning your phone off airplane mode. If you do it will do a search probably to see if you have a subscription or purchase. If you have poor cell service the link to your maps disappear. The dowloaded maps remain but you can’t access. If however you created a route, you can access those and get access to the downloaded maps and comments. I am guessing most people don’t have routes created so you are in danger of loosing access to maps while on trail. This is one of the reasons, I have paper maps and a compass. But I am guessing many users don’t have this as a back up. So this could be a safety issue.
Initial thoughts
It’s complicated and hard to figure out. I’ll explore YouTube a bit but I just want to create our own trip with way points, camp sites and water locations on the AT? Why didn’t that easy to do? Just want a long weekend hike and can’t seem to figure out how to build my own.

Good, but still has double-commenting bug after years
I used this since when it was called Guthook. I’m hiking again this year and noticed that editing comments will often cause a duplicate comment, which is a bug I remember from seven years ago. Please fix it! Otherwise, it’s a great resource that’s worth having for recent reports on water, bears, bed bugs at hostels, etc.
No Appalachian Trail section maps
Yeah so the App Store clearly shows there are sections to purchase for the Appalachian Trail, but after downloading the app, I realize you have to pay all $75 for it. No thanks.
It’s still good but needs update
I haven’t seen a recent comment and my waypoints disappeared from the map but it’s still been great at navigating me to where I needed to go. My public comments don’t show up
River Runninf
This is the perfect app for rafting rivers. No more guesswork on where you are or how far you have to go. It is awesome.
Not great for OR and WA hikes
Not finding this app useful at all. Doesn’t show the full trails. No public comments or anything on any of the trails Ive looked at so far. Way too hard to use and no back button. See no benefit over AllTrails. Waste of money
Need ability to load 2 sections in a bundle
I really do love the app and would not hesitate to give it five stars, but the inability to load and simultaneously activate multiple map sections in a bundle is very frustrating. I want to plan my thru hike and save planned daily routes. Naturally a hiker is unlikely to end their day where a particular map section ends — we will cross into the next section before stopping. The inability to see and use two sections at once is limiting. Obviously a workaround would be to save two separate routes for those days, but then you’re doing hiker math to know the Real mileage, elevation details etc for the second part. I read somewhere that this limitation might be due to performance concerns. Maybe make the option available only when all data has been downloaded for offline use? That would work for me and my review rating would immediately go to 5 stars.
They ruined a good bit
Farout added an ai feature that categorizes and deletes comments automatically and now years of useful comments are just gone, do better farout
Wish The Web App Worked
I downloaded FarOut and purchased the AT Guide to use for hiking the Appalachian Trail. I was looking forward to being able to plan routes using both the mobile and web apps. Unfortunately, the web app has proven itself to be of little use. For some reason, when viewing routes on the web app that were created using the mobile app, a certain percentage of them do not show the highlighted route or directional arrows. Additionally, if one creates some routes using the mobile app and some using the web app, all hell breaks loose and the routes are no longer sorted alphanumerically in the route list and the routes overlap one another. It’s a shame FarOut doesn’t have the same level of sophistication that their competitors like Gaia and AllTrails have.

Unusable after 3 days on trail
The app is fine for planning while you have internet, but BEWARE of using it as your sole source for navigation on trail. My experience is it just stops working after about 3 days. It opens then freezes. The fix is to reinstall which isn’t going to happen easily on a thru hike. I know. I had backups for navigation and luckily I was in the Sierras where water is plentiful. Be safe out there and DO NOT DEPEND ON THIS APP AS A NAVIGATION APP it will stop working just when you need it.
Keeps Crashing
I have loved this app for years! Since it was Guthooks. Now it crashes constantly on my phone. I’ve updated to the latest version. Please help before summer.
Unusable since last update
I have an iPhone SE and the app consumed huge amounts of battery and 20gb of storage since the last update. I had to delete and re-download it. I’m currently on an AT thru hike so this is not a fun issue to have.
Not working
The app is not working properly after the last update. I cannot view my profile info, many sections of the apps are empty. Also, can't log in my profile on the farout web page. Please fix it asap.
National Park maps
Adding the Great Smoky Mountains maps has helped my son and I start exploring the GSMNP. I’d like to see one for the Art Loeb Trail.

unfortunately, with the last update 13.0.2 and setting the application to the Czech language, the application is broken. I can't get into my account to edit. I can see the maps, but that's all 😟
Torres del Paine map expensive
I recently did TDP O circuit. I bought the FarOut guide, but I felt it was expensive for what it provided, and not necessary. Water is available everywhere, and the trail is well marked.
Great app, horrible UI design
Looking for 10 minutes already how to change the section of the map I’m using. Just cant find it.
Great app
I still like paper maps but I use Far Out for planning as well. My only criticism is there are hostels, locations and such that have been out of business for years. Love to see them clean in up year to year rather than having to search the comments.
Stranded on Eagle Rock Loop
I assumed I could access the downloaded map when I had no signal, but evidently not. Am grateful my buddy had Garmin app. Please let me know if the fine print said I do not have access when there is not a signal & I will update my rating.
Great app, but I do have a wishlist
Incredible app, very useful for thru-hikers. I hope Guthook will expand soon with the Kunsleden and Olav’s Way in Sweden and Norway and the English South Coast Path. These trails really belong among the others but are not available yet.
Offline map issues
Offline maps not working when zooming in to see if your on the track, very disconcerting when you’re trying to find the way back as can be hit and miss.
Amazing or Garbage, depending on the trail
I used FarOut (previously guthook) on the PCT in 2019 and it was excellent. Currently using it on Te Araroa and it is only somewhat helpful. Missing campsites, markers, bypasses, and just generally not up to date. Granted, Te Araroa is a newer trail than some others but the app could definitely use a yearly update here to keep things current. On the well established trails this app is all you need
Amazingly useful
Being able to identify water points is an absolute game changer. And I love the fact that you can buy the maps once and not have to pay a monthly subscription.
Worthless app
This app sucks, waste of money. I bought the PA NCT map and it didn’t work well in areas with limited service.

Only criticism at this point would be that many of the town names are often obscured by icons and are a pain to read or decipher.
Crash after update
Very nice app! But since I updated yesterday I cannot use the app anymore. It opens but as soon as I press a functionality it crashes and shuts down. I already restarted my iPhone (is updated to latest iOS) and deleted my app and downloaded it again.. nothing helps. What should I do?
Great app
My wife and I did a SOBO AT thru hike in 2023. We used FarOut the whole way and had no issues. I recommend FarOut to anyone serious about backpacking or hiking far away from a parking lot.
Epic trail failure
I’ve used farout for several years now on a few trails. In July I hiked the wonderland trail and my app wouldn’t respond, the screen would freeze, and it wouldn’t record my route. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, same problem. Luckily my hiking partner also had the app and was having no issues. I meant to contact farout back then and ask for a refund for that trail since it wasn’t cheap and was totally useless. I forgot. Now I’m preparing to hike another section of the Appalachian Trail and the app is having the same issue. My screen is frozen and there’s nothing that I can do about it. Not only that, but FarOut has not even made it easy for you to contact Support. There are a bunch of tutorial and frequently ask questions but no way it seems to contact the developer to get help directly. This is obviously case in point why you can’t rely on technology alone and should always have a backup. I’ve loved this app for years but this glitch that seems impossible to fix is ruining it. Please make support easier to contact.
Needs improvement for the Camino.
This was the app I used the most while doing the Camino Frances. Overall I like how you can find your location and distance to the next town. It is missing the most direct route between Tricastela and Sarria. It shows a couple of hostels on the route but not the trail. Other apps provide more info on albergues/hostels. I encountered a couple of glitches in the app and the support team was excellent. With some updates on the Camino Frances this will be a five star app.
New tab bar is bad
The main tab bar should house screens that are the more often used. For me the two most used screens are the map and the elevation, and not account. I suggest removing the trails button from the tab bar to somewhere else, since you are very unlikely to change the trail when you’re hiking.
