What people like
- Digital scores are beautiful and easy to read.
- Support team responds quickly and helpfully.
- Includes helpful fingering suggestions from experts.
What they complain about
- Annotations disappear or get lost easily.
- Eraser tool is frustrating and unreliable.
- Scores often fail to load properly.
There’s been much improvement
Better than a pdf scan of the score and the new pdf upload feature is great. Plenty of features like bookmarking, easily switching from the solo part to the same part in the full score, and annotating.
Terrible app
Purchased scores on the app and realized I am not able to print it out because the toolbar icons don't work as the app registers every click as "turning the page" wherever you do it, even if you click on the icons. Money wasted.
Disappointed with lack of features and support
I bought a horn sonata score. Disappointed that there aren’t parts included, but just the full score. Also, wish that page tuning pedals worked with it. Pretty much useless for performances as a result. I’ll have to screenshot every page and use in forScore instead. Also, why no support option?
Can not print
Recently I can’t print out the music anymore. The buttons on top don’t work.
Needs work
The formatting is pretty, undeniable. The concert/performance mode is nice as well, and the customizations to spacing and sizing are nice. The issue is compatibility with writing and generally marking the scores. If you begin marking near one line and veer into the margin of another line, the mark will not record in the adjacent line. The eraser function is also extremely bad. Unless it’s just very unintuitive and I’m using it wrong, it feels so bad to try and erase marks. You’d expect to be able to scribble over marks with the eraser and make things disappear but 9/10 times that doesn’t happen. For an ecosystem that charges nearly as much for digital scores as they do for their very high quality physical copies, the software needs to be top tier. This software is not top-tier.
Sehr gute App
The app is buggy!
Every time I restart the app, all my purchased scores are gone. Nothing in my library. Complete blank. I have to delete the app, reinstall it, and then log in for the first time again, and then it may show up. I am currently in this cycle 3 times already and can’t get my scores back. Not such issue on an older iPad
Gute App!
Völlig unbrauchbar in diesem Zustand.
Great Quality but Troublesome Print Layout
I’m a professional classical musician. The quality of the score is as always among the highest in the industry. The app is in general smooth to use despite the paying-for-credits thing is not as intuitive. However, there’s a major issue for me that’s almost a deal breaker: the multi-movement scores only produce single movements within a collection, and while it might be easier to locate, this approach completely ruin the printing layout. I dig everywhere and didn’t seem to find an option for “printing the whole piece”; instead, I was only able to print through individual movement. So, for instance, for Schumann’s kinderszenen, I’d have some pages with only one line of music. I seriously hope the developer can add that feature.
Simply amazing
In my view, this is how the future of classical music publishing will look like: bringing reliable scores to the tablet, for serious performers who are fed up with playing from shady IMSLP downloads...
eraser function not working
Everything is great, except when I write things in the music, there’s no way for me to erase it. Pretty disappointed with this lack of basic function.
Great performance app, 80% of the way there
The Henle Library is a very good. I use it for piano and harpsichord on my 12.9” iPad Pro. I’ve been using a different PDF-based app for a year, and the Henle’s rendering is significantly easier to read then even a good PDF. The sizing controls are great. Even though I have all the music I play on open source PDFs, it was worth it to me to purchase it in the Henle Library because it is easier to read and play, and I can get trustworthy urtext editions. The fingerings are generally reliable. I play all the time in two-page mode fitting as much of the music on the screen as possible, and I don’t have a problem reading the score. I use a foot controller to turn pages. The Henle Library is only about 80% of the way, there, though, lacking features I find very useful in other music reading apps. - In two page mode, I really want to be able to turn only one page at a time so I can see the next page while still playing the current page. This also lets me choose the most opportune time to turn pages, which is an issue because using two pedals makes it difficult to hit the page turn pedal. - I really don’t like the hi-lighter transparency level and would like to set it myself. It’s not usable with the current transparency. If these issues were fixed this would be an enthusiastic five stars. As is, this is great for learning a piece, but for performance I’m likely to use my other app that lets me turn the page when I want to.
Keeps whiting out!
Frustrating. I can’t trust it. Ever. It just randomly whites out a page while I am playing or most of a page. I have to close the piece to get it back. If the music didn’t cost an arm and leg, I would not be using it! I
The sound of silence
[update to previous review] After some delay I finally got the credits I purchased last year and could begin test the app. Thank you Henle support for getting my issue resolved—and thank you for the extra credits! ***** The good stuff ***** The app is very smooth and responsive and (after a short learning curve) easy and intuitive to navigate. Scores are legible and the ability to annotate without a physical pencil is amazing. (If only we had this 40 years ago!) Based on the urtext complete Beethoven quartets the cost is very competitive with printed scores: $64 for the set vs. $153 from Amazon—almost a 60% discount. And you don’t need to lug a backpack full of scores around. ***** Not-so-good/needs work ***** Scores are scans of printed editions sliced into staves, not digital vectors. This has some knock-on effects: Supported zoom levels appear to be limited (via SCORE SETTINGS > Stave Spacing). Changing orientation to landscape shows a higher resolution rendition, but only 1-2 staves vs. 4-5 in portrait. You will want the largest tablet screen you can get. Print quality is … terrible. The score images (printed on a 600 DPI PostScript laser printer) suffer from severe aliasing and are pretty much useless. If you need hard copy buy the excellent printed edition. But then you’ll need to transcribe all your annotations by hand. And get a fat backpack to lug the paper. ***** Summary ***** If you need to schlep a large collection of scores around the campus and don’t have the budget of the Hamilton production this app is made for you. The annotation capabilities will be an invaluable layer of frosting on your cake. If you cherish high-quality musical typography and need paper scores the Henle app will disappoint.
Prima
Rach 3 all fingering work LOST TWICE.
I spent so much time working on this workhorse, to find out that all of my fingering work for the concerto disappeared, twice! Can you please do something about this Henle, I hope this doesn’t happen to anybody else!
Bravo!
So disappointing
I consistently have problems opening scores that I’ve purchased, scores disappear all the time. Very buggy. Such a shame since the concept is so lovely.
Eraser function isn’t working
Everything is great but the eraser function is not working.
Fan mail
I love the Henle app! The digital music is beautiful and easy to read, as you would expect from Henle. I think that the two-finger tap for going back to the beginning of repeats is absolutely brilliant. I find the built-in metronome very helpful. It’s faster than reaching for a separate device, and the pitch works well for me. Thank you, Henle!
Fix it
Turn the page and it’s blank. Unacceptable
Weird in-app purchase model, purchasing experience
Will start by saying in a sea of music publishers, Henle stands out. Their printed editions are coveted by musicians worldwide. Their attention to the smallest visual details creates an elevated experience when reading their scores. Their design-forward, musician-centered approach creates premium products that are a joy to use. Musicians like me get genuinely excited when they see a Henle score. Like most musicians these days, most of my music collection is digitized. So when I saw they had a digital app, my immediate response was "Take my money, please!" So why 4 stars? The scores themselves are stellar, and live up to expectations. The process of purchasing them is not. Instead of a 1:1 transaction (you purchase the score for a set price), you purchase a bank of 200, 500, or 1000 credits. There is no 1:1 relationship between credits and score prices. For example, the complete Hadyn string quartets costs 1980 credits. Which means I would have to make two 1000 credit transactions and leave 20 credits on the table. This process is clunky and unnecessarily complicated.
Henle scores are good, but this app is terrible.
Implementation is barely there. I feel like there is no organization in my library. The search function for the Henle store especially is straight up to find any score it’s a straight up nightmare. Why can’t I zoom into the score?
Not keeping up
Love the scores, but lots of minor annoyances. Have to reload several times when iPad restarts. Very limited annotation symbols. Annotation hides top and bottom lines of piano scores, sometimes. ForScore was at same level two years ago, but now is far superior. What keeps me on this app are the Beethoven piano sonatas, where I can change fingering editions with one click. That being said, the written comments aren’t available so I still have to keep my Schnabel on hand.
Great Sheet Music, But Improvements Should Be Made
I’ve been using this app for about a year now, and the app has never bothered me enough to not give it 5 stars, but there’s some VERY obvious issues that could be fixed to greatly enhance user experience. No. 1 - In the annotation tool when you disable touch to only use the Apple Pencil, you can still put dots on the score with your hands by accident, but not lines. No. 2 - It seems completely random, but sometimes when you switch between annotation tools it will jump back to the start of the page when you’re zoomed in, which has wasted me a lot of time and is frequently annoying. No. 3 - Sometimes when you try to erase an annotation when zoomed in, you’ll have to tap super far to the left or right or up or down for it to delete. Pretty much everywhere EXCEPT the annotation. It makes deleting things super annoying. No. 4 - If you don’t hold the Apple Pencil or your finger down long enough while making an annotation, a dot will appear at the end which is really annoying when using the highlighter, and deleting, or moving annotations. No. 5 - WHY CAN’T YOU MOVE BACK OR FORWARD WHEN LISTENING TO YOUR RECORDINGS?? I recorded myself playing the Ballade No. 1 in G minor op. 23, and I have to listen through the whole thing just to hear the coda. I’m sure if you downloaded the recording THEN you could move back and forth, but for something as quick and convenient as the recording library, I’d expect it to be done there. No. 6 - Please allow us to view the difficulty rating of the piece BEFORE we buy it in the app. It’s not too big of an issue because you can just go on the website and view the difficulty, but seeing it from the app would be nice. Last but not least, No. 7 - If I ever lose my account, all of my music is gone. I also can’t share the music with others unless they have an IPad too, which many don’t. The answer to those problems is obviously PHYSICAL sheet music. I think when you purchase a piece on the app, you should receive a 1 time use discount code for like 30%-50% off of the paper bound version. I also think you should receive a 1 time use download for the app if you buy the paper edition. I’d love to own a copy of the digital version for convenience, and own a copy of the physical version for the long term. I know you can print it from the app, but I want an actual bound version with that classic Henle blue. Those are my issues with the app. If they were fixed, my review would be far beyond 5 stars. For all that the app is and all that it’s not, I still recommend downloading it.
Totally Unpractical and Flawed
Just awful to use. The annotation tool is so awful that it is hard to understand how it came to light. I love Henle and I wanted to get this app so I could mark the score without destroying my paper edition. That function is basically so cumbersome that it is totally useless. Just wasted money buying credits for something that is unusable. What a wasted opportunity to create a beautiful app. Such a disappointment.
Ansonsten weiter so!
Printing Failed Constantly
I bought music through this app because sometimes it takes weeks for physical copies to be shipped, but it’s a pain that I cannot print he music I purchased out or open them through other apps. It just keep failing and close the app every time I tried to print or share. Quite disappointing.
Needs much improvement
I obviously love having these additions available in an app, but the app itself needs improvement. Often my purchased and downloaded sheet music does not show up in my library section. This makes it unreliable for use concerts especially in places where Wi-Fi is not available.
Best place to buy sheet music
I mostly use the Henle library app to buy sheet music because they allow exporting / printing. With the latest update the quality of exports is perfect for a large iPad Pro so I highly recommend this app.
Paper is better
U can’t write on top or bottom of the page because their writing menus block those areas. Absolutely ridiculous
Loses my annotations
I love a lot about this app, but i cant use it when it keeps losing all my annotations. Whether I'm on wifi or not, within a week all my annotations are gone. This has happened several times, and it’s infuriating. Devs — this completely destroys the app’s usefulness to me — in fact, it makes it worse than useless because my work is lost. Please fix this — before you get overwhelmed by reviews from angry musicians! Your app is gorgeous but destructive. Maybe rename it Cleopatra. [UPDATE: Developers promptly responded and were able to restore my annotations. Thank you!]
Not very good
Would be very happy to pay for official Henle ForScore files. However, this app isn’t great, especially when everyone uses ForScore already, and it’s so much better. The one cool thing about the app is that you can see a bunch of different fingerings. Henle should stick to what they do best— engraving— and leave the software development stuff to ForScore. Perhaps the two of you could work out some DRM thing (even though I hate DRM generally)so Henle can be sure they’re paid.
Fine but can be better
I have been using this app for one semester now, it is fine and I like the idea of good edition music becomes electronically. Also appreciate different fingerings from several wonderful violinists, there are some great suggestions sometimes. The first thing can be improved is the sections when adding written notations in the app. By that I mean a white area would appear when using the apple pencil, and the upper and lower part besides that are gray. It seems like the creator was trying to organize it in different layers, and the problem is that when the pen or eraser tool is used in another layer, it is not working, therefore cannot erase what is not in this layer. I am not seeing the reason why such hassle is needed, just create several layers for the entire page would be better I think. The other thing that has been bothering me is the sensitivity of the app. It seems like there is a hard time for it to identify whether it is the palm or the tip of apple pencil was touching it. I am not sure if it is my iPad's problem, but it occurs pretty often and reached a point where I was frustrated by that and want to delete the app. Not sure how you can fix it but it would be really helpful if there is a way to change that.
My needs are not extensive
I wanted to be able to add my own annotation layers so I could enter editorial marks from print editions that I own. I said that here in a review and I got a prompt response showing me how to do it. I am upgrading my rating to five stars.
Hard to use
Search function doesn’t work well. Your files don’t load right away so if you have a minute to play piano it’ll take 10 minutes before the app “remembers” what songs you purchased really terrible experience. Edit: the developer says there is a problem with the app. Yes I agree but it is not an installation problem, it is a problem with the app. Buy the PDFs separately, or use a different app, but don’t count on your music to show up right away.
Buggy app and unreliable.
Update: Changing my review to 4 stars. For some reason, the app started working again today - just after New Year’s. I now am able to purchase credits and download music. My previous purchases have also been restored and I was able to download it on the cloud. Taking off one star, because when I tried exporting it to a pdf format (iOS device), the notations looked skewed and shrunken. —————————————————————————————— I downloaded this app just 3 days ago and made some purchases. Just during New Year’s Eve, I noticed that the app suddenly wasn’t working. Store can’t be accessed, website link goes to a 404 error page and all my purchased downloads are not loading. I have done the troubleshooting of deleting the app, then relogging into my account. Nothing is still loading. Please issue a bug fix!
No support, slow startup, and more
Takes a long time to start (more than 40 seconds). Sometimes displays a blank page when changing pages. Poorly organized - should be organized by book. No support. I wish I had bought the actual books instead of the digital versions.
Ok
Pretty good but inconsistent. Some scores include fingering while others do not. The customization feature is nice but the score doesn’t scale correctly when in landscape orientation. Being able to jump straight to a bar or movement is great but what I really want is the ability to show just a few select bars as I learn a piece. If I’m concentrating on bars 25-38 I just want to see those bars. Annotations are a nice feature, but the highlight brush is too thin; I want to highlight entire measures. Placing fingering annotations is frustration as it requires multiple annotations, even for standard fingerings. All in all this app is ok but I probably won’t use it much due to the above.
Exceeds Expectations!
This App is the entire reason I purchased my iPad 12.9. I love Henle Editions and have duplicated everything I have in paper scores and added much more. I couldn’t be more pleased!
No longer can export scores
The app no longer can export pdfs for use in other apps. Support said it’d be fixed, but it’s been over a month
Annotation Tool Still Flawed
I have been using the henle app for years and have bought scores worth of hundreds of dollars. Great and high-quality scores and all that, but the absence of an “undo” function is hugely disappointing for people who want to write on them. The eraser tool works only when you tap on each stroke and sometimes it accidentally deletes things like fingerings and there’s no way to bring them back unless you remember them. Please add an undo function!!!!!!!!!!
Really deserves improvement
The concept is fantastic. The implementation is only halfway there. Just started using it and already finding little annoyances that pile up with the result that it tend to get in my way as I play. The score annotation, for example: whenever I make a small highlight of a single note (sometimes to identify the melody so I know to sound those notes a bit louder) the app draws an additional highlight dot as I lift the pen or my finger from the screen. This obscures the note far too much and is just otherwise ugly. Another necessary improvement is the ability to have multiple copies of the same score for different annotations (practice vs performance) OR to allow multiple layers of annotation to display at once and then assign layer groups to quickly select which layers are displayed. I really want this app to be improved, as it is such a fantastic concept that musicians really need. It’s such a shame that something like this doesn’t enhance my playing but rather gets in the way because of little oversights in design.
Amazing app with great features
The digital music is amazing and the features with the annotation, metronome, and others make this app the best digital experience for their music!
Great scores, terrible app and zero support
I recently downloaded this app with great anticipation at being able to use outstanding scores on my iPad Pro. I started downloading several hundreds of dollars worth of scores when the app froze and wouldn’t reopen. I sent an email to app support and have received no response. I am deeply disappointed and wouldn’t recommend this app or the Henle Library at this point. I hope this company can get its act together and provide a functional app and proper support to match the quality of its scores. We deserve better from Henle.
Gelungene App
Useless
The app currently doesn’t allow me to use credits I already purchased. I just get an error message.
an app made for boomers by boomers
for context: i have a free subscription provided by my university and i use an ipad pro i’m using this in 2020 and so far, the user experience has been ok. the interface is kind of clunky, but i can import scores to another app which i appreciate. henle downgrades the score quality to make you want to buy the print edition, which is capitalism at its finest. i get that. what makes no sense is the fact that big books are separated by piece (aka the well tempered klavier is not in 2 volumes, it’s by each individual prelude and fugue) and the search engine isn’t very good at finding exactly what you’re looking for. i’m glad that my university paid for this because i wouldn’t spend my own hard owned money on this until the developers make some changes to make this more intuitive. please consider having the option of downloading books by full volumes (like the beethoven sonatas) and by single pieces.
