Wonderful and frustrating
The content is WONDERFUL and has rececently gone through a major update and remastering (thank you!). Now, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it easy to share a link to courses AND episodes. I have several friends who also have the subscription and it is hard to recommend and link up for watching and chatting on all the wonderful material. This is an emportant part of this subscription.
Limited Content if you dont get Plus
I got the Classics membership because there was a promo, then added a bunch of lectures to my watch list. I started several. Then when I log back in nearly every course I had saved is now only in the plus bundle, practically double the price. I will be canceling the membership immediately. There is no way they could have done this intentionally, but it felt very misleading.
Suggestions for improvements
This is a great app, but I would use it more if it supported picture in picture. Consider adding that functionality!
Fantastic way to keep learning
There are so many different courses, the professors are fantastic and new courses are consistently being added- such a great way to continue learning! Highly recommend!
New update sucks

Incredible content but the app has issues
I’ve been using the app for about 6 years almost everyday, through all its various incarnations. I’ve noticed the loading times have gotten slower and slower and the app has always been buggy but seems to be having more issues in the past 6 months. Is there a better place to report this kind of app specific stuff ?
Cant use on multiple devices without breaking your login credentials, making app completely unusable
After four years, it LOOKS LIKE they have finally made an app that is stable and functional... WRONG! Turns out if you try to use their service on a different device, like an android tablet or phone, once you login on the android device, it logs you out out of your iPhone app. And then, when you try to log back in on your iPhone, your username and password no longer works! It says email and password not a match. But I absolutely positively was using the correct password and email set. To "fix this" I had to reinstall the app, which deleted 100 GB of my off-line downloads! This kind of thing has happened so many times and I'm tired of having to waste my time re-downloading my off-line downloads. I love the service but the problems with the app is ridiculous. I think it's time to quit and go with a different service.
App Just Hangs
Tried to launch the app does not go to the login page.
v18 Breaks App Store Purchase
I was forced to update the app to the newest version. When trying to sign in by clicking “Restore Purchase” it throws up a load indicator, the does nothing.
Unfortunate software
Hopefully, this is an isolated incident. However, my personal experience shows otherwise. The courses are world class however the software is remarkably bad. Plan on multiple password resets in order to view your coursework. Each login requires multiple password resets. What a shame.
Add Sleep/Timer Feature
I used the old Great Courses app which, for the most part, is obsolete to this app. However, one feature that needs to be implemented is the sleep feature, allowing you to set a timer for how long the content should play for. This feature needs to make a reappearance.
Be prepared to be frustrated
The app is constantly unstable and unreliable. Your downloads disappear, settings are lost, you're forced to upgrade or logged out unexpectedly, etc. For somebody trying to listen while away from WiFi this will be a constant frustration. In addition, the depth and challenge of the material seems dumbed down since the rebranding from The Teaching Company. Still seems like the best choice for real educational material, but also a shame, given what it once was.

Best investment I’ve made in quite some time
I really can’t recommend this app enough. Forty years after my first liberal arts college education I’m giving myself a second one with this fantastic resource … and at a fraction of the cost. I’ve got notebooks of notes now on Russian Literature, Physics, the Ottoman Empire, Macroeconomics, and Infectious Diseases, to name just a few. It’s so wonderful to immerse myself in a world of learning at a time in life when I can truly appreciate and value it. I strongly recommend this app!!
New forced app update won’t open!
My yearly subscription through apple isn’t being recognized by the app… plenty of other apps do this seemlessly, without kicking me out AND continue to recognize my subscription. Fix this ASAP!
Great app with minor issues
Great app which works well on my iPhone 13. My only real issue is that when I stream the program from the iPhone app to my TV, after a few minutes the program starts playing on my phone as well as on the TV. So I get the sound coming from the phone and the TV.
Great Courses, Inadequate App
My wife and I have long been fans of The Great Courses, even during the dark time when it temporarily abandoned its name; this review is for the app, not the content. It is flakey in its basic functionality, even after the supposedly major 8.0 upgrade: • It often forgets the last lecture I played, resuming instead at the beginning of the previous lecture. • It usually loses my place when switching from video to audio. • It stops while playing in video mode when I lock the screen. This is a reasonable interface decision, though inappropriate for my usage in the gym. But it usually fails to resume when I press the Play button, either on the lock screen or on my headphones. I seem to have better luck if I pause the video before locking the screen.
Playback Feautures with headphones
My only complain about this app is that if you try to rewind with your headphones it takes you back to the very beginning of the lectures instead of the 30 seconds as the app suggests. Unfortunately, because of my job, I’m forced to use Audible if I want to listen to any of these lectures.
Better than podcasts
I’m so tired of podcasts by people with opinions and no knowledge. This is a rewarding tool to enrich your mind from truly educated people.
Great Courses lousy app
While I’ve enjoyed most of the courses I have watched the app is awful. The continue watching can’t be edited.
Good content, app needs some work
Primarily I am finding that it does not record where I am in the lectures, so every course section thinks I am still at the start of episode one. Otherwise my first experience has been positive of the content.

Aggravating login repeats. Does not work offline
I have been a crest courses customer for a decade, but while the app works OK online, very often it will require a login. Then when offline the app is useless. FIX this!!!! The app should always play download content already on our devices
best app you’ll ever subscribe to
YAY you went back to the old name! thanks folks. can we get a ton of courses on AI please, it’s a mite urgent. just checked to see the classic daniel robinson lectures were still there ... phew! new content looks excellent. bravo guys

App crashing after latest update. Content is GREAT!. Can’t allow app to crash I learn on the go! Thanks Update Above crash seems to have resolved. Thanks Excellent content Pls make it run in the background, it stops playing say if I need to open message app while listening. I use video mode. Also, pls make a bookmark function that takes you to the whole course not only to specific lecture. I keep having to go to my watch list to find a specific course. My watch list is huge! Will happily keep subscribing! Totally worth the money. 5 Stars when above issues are fixed Thanks
Content is great - app is a poor
The content and value is 1st class but the app has constant crash and can’t really sync across devices. I would still purchase as the guidebooks , courses and price and definitely worth the cost.

Amazing content from various topics. I've done a bunch of the courses. They are very easy to understand and the video lectures are great.
Losing a loyal customer
I have purchased 117 courses over the past 15 years but will not buy another and refuse to be held captive by the subscription model. This app is crapp and I say that as a career software developer. Downloading my purchased content fails far more often than it succeeds and the entire user experience is torture. You have failed in your prime function, which should be to facilitate your customers ability to enjoy your products. You need to outsource the app to competent developers and get this fixed. Just awful.
Really great, but niggles...
Really great content, prepared extremely well and fascinating to listen to people who are passionate about their favourite topics. Disappointingly, too much content is US-centric. Even things like Everyday Engineering becomes wearing if you don’t care about foot pounds per square inch and the US building code. The app is sometimes disappointing too. Slow to start content and frequently tells me I’m not authorised and I have to restart.
Disappointing
I love the content. I have bought a TON of content over the years. More than I’ve actually watched or listened to. The new Plus app is awfully dedicated to pushing the subscription plan. I don’t want a subscription. And I have no search function to just search my purchased content. Why? Worse, this version of the app has a similar shortcoming to the old app. I download content to watch/listen when I have no internet access. But the app still insists I log in, even to watch downloaded content. I can’t log in if I have no internet access. I can’t log in before I leave, but sometimes it forgets, and I’m out of luck. Very disappointing on both accounts. I’ve been a customer since the days of cassette tapes. I think this app is deeply flawed, at least for a customer like me. Finally, it has no search function for material I have already bought. I have to manually search. Thoughtless.
Needs a Way to Ask Questions
I understand this isn’t a live classroom. Indeed, independent, self-paced learning is what I hoped to get. But there are instances when asking a question, a forum, perhaps, would be vital. For instance, at the beginning of the chemistry course, the professor asks, If you have 3000 students and can seat thirty students per room, how many rooms are in the school? He proceeds to talk about ways of thinking about problems in chemistry, but I was completely distracted, waiting for him to point out that, logically, there’s no way to know how many rooms are in the school, only that the 3000 students would occupy 100 of them. So now I don’t understand if that’s how I’m supposed to think, or not.

Awful Garbage
The old Great Courses app was truly solid. I had used it across generations of iPads. Now, ever since it was retired and absorbed into the great course plus app, I’ve had THREE separate events in which I lost a few hundred GB’s of downloaded courses and thus had to redownload them. I watch these courses when traveling. I don’t want to rely upon streaming the content, especially when my viewing progress is rarely maintained when streaming. I’ve sunk thousands into this now piss poor company. I should have stuck with books instead. Welcome to the unreliability of the digital content world. Furthermore, the current offerings are overtly simplified in comparison to the older courses. Many of the recent courses don’t even meet high school standards.
Great app
I had a slight problem with the system kicking me out but managed to reset my password and restore my purchase after an update. I am very pleased with the content especially languages which are extremely helpful 👍🏻
Content is great... When the app feels like working.
Who do I talk to about the glitches in this app? It often crashes. My downloads just delete themselves. When I try to download content again, it won’t load at all or is extremely slow. I’m always having to restart the app or download it again. What a pain considering how expensive the subscription is!
Wonderful Content, App Needs Some Work
I absolutely love all the programming I’ve viewed thus far. However the app needs some updates. I’d love to see Picture in Picture support outside the app. It works within the app fine. CarPlay support would be incredible too for audio versions. It would also be nice to add an easy autoplay toggle into the UI.

Horrible
The original app is so much better. Courses bought while we had the original app don’t automatically appear in the new app - not just “don’t download” - new app says I didn’t purchase. Then constant pausing because it won’t connect to WiFi (everything else on my phone and iPad does), then it starts to play the same episode from two different spots, so the lecturer is speaking over themselves. I give up. Maybe this is their way of trying to force us to buy a subscription?

Slow to open; non-functional on airplane
I have been listening to great courses since the early 1990s when I rented cassettes. The company has continued to try to meet me via the latest technological improvements. I have purchased many courses. I am able to download lectures. Yet the app does not open without Internet access or requires me to join streaming service while on airplane. Content = 5 stars. Implementation = 0 Stars as I cannot access the content.
What happened to my downloaded content???
I love the Great Courses and have no complaints about content or presentation. But I frequently do not have access to the internet, so when I do, I download a course to watch offline. Until today, that has worked fine, but suddenly all my downloaded content is missing. The download icon on courses is missing, so I can’t even redownload. If it isn’t fixable, I’ll need to cancel, which would break my heart. I can’t afford to pay for something I can only use infrequently. Please advise. Thank you.

My “great courses” from the 20th Century are right where I left the DVD’s and still work as purchased. Meanwhile, Great Courses has become Great Courses Plus! The transition and reset of the password didn’t work; maybe because I didn’t bite your new “subscription” hook? At any rate, I’m writing off my lost digital purchase. Time is too precious to waste chasing locked binary information. I could jump through your hoops and next week a new genius executive will decide to rename it: “Great Courses Plus Plus Infinity!“ And we will all need new passwords again, to get at what we’ve already paid for. No thanks. I’ll just buy my Great Courses on DVD at the flea market. The old stuff is still great!
Love The Great Courses
I have loved The Great Courses content for some time and now, instead of purchasing courses individually I can subscribe and access all the courses I want! 4 star rating? My only criticism is you cannot download lectures for viewing at a later time, otherwise it would be a 5 star app.
Still terrible
Have now viewed previously purchased courses. Download for viewing off line doesn’t work. I have a half TB previously download, un-usable. Also lost is the ability to have my previously purchased courses presented in different ways (a-z; z-a, ; recently viewed; etc. Has been some improvement in clarity. Given the diminished quality of lecturer presentation (they need to learn to be able to present in a natural voice rather then clumsily reciting a script), and lack of interesting subjects,have not purchased new courses. Doesn’t appear Great Course Admin cares. Just a continued down hill slope.
