When opening the app first is a pop up with a 50% off offer, I click no thanks and it takes me back to that pop up every time. No point in downloading if you don’t want to pay the app is useless.
The simplest (thus best) budgeting app
I’ve been using Pennies for several months now and the thing I love about it is its simplicity. I’ve used other apps like Mint, but I always found myself losing steam because it was so complex - all of the automation made the app less useful, not more (and I didn’t like giving them access to so much data about me). Pennies is the complete opposite - the simple UX makes it so easy to stick to. I rated 4/5 because one area where it could use some work is the Notes system - it would be super useful to be able to modify the default/persistent Notes. I have a number of recurring expenses that don’t fit neatly into the defaults. Of course I can type in a custom note, but once it rolls off of the most recent notes, I have to add it again, and sometimes I forget how I categorized things and will use a different note later on. This makes it hard to consistently track a category over time.

Can't try it out.
This was disappointing as I can't use any features at all without signing up for a trial subscription. I'm happy to pay, but not so much when it looks like I can do all of this with a mobile-optimised spreadsheet. Does it at least connect to a bank account? Better to spend more for more features from a service like YNAB.
Technical Issues
I’ve had this app for two years. It has a small memory for businesses that you enter. So you have to re-enter the business almost every time. Every time I use the app it suddenly just disappears from the screen and you have to start all over.

Really good except for one annoying flaw
This is a really good budgeting app. Great UI, attractive, and easy to use. However, I have one complaint that I'm sure is a bug in the software code. When reordering budgets (I have a LOT of them - close to 50), the app lags terribly and won't scroll as you're reordering the budget, so you have to move it to the top of the screen, manually scroll, and then repeat until you find the position you want the budget to be in. If I'm reordering alphabetically, for example, this can be quite annoying! Either the scrolling mechanism needs to be fixed, or an option should be added to sort automatically without having to manually do it. Otherwise, well done!!!!! Please keep up the great work!
Buggy
Bought the app after trial period. Now freezes and when I restart my phone i have to re-enter my budget, and to add further, I set my pay day fortnightly and it calculates more days left than what I actually have until payday, ie; 11 days left when I have 4 days left.
Eh
I enjoyed it until you now have to pay £39.99 a year to use it. If I had that money spare I wouldn’t be using a budget tracker. Also, £39.99 in my opinion is a steep price for what you actually get.
Simply yet Effective
I recommend this app all the time to people for multiple years now. This has transformed how I budget. I find it such a simple way to track your variable costs (like groceries, fun spending, etc). I always update it right after I make an expense (like I have the receipt in my hand from the grocery store). You have your “running total” for each category, right in your pocket, to check so easily on the go (vs updating a spreadsheet at the end of the month - which is retroactive vs proactive). It has helped me be intentional for the last few years and save effectively!
Used to be a great app
I have used this app for years and loved it. But one of the latest updates changed the rollover feature. It used to ask during the budget setup if you wanted the budget to rollover each week. Now it doesn’t ask and I always forget. The only way to do it is to create the budget and then go into the edit menu and change it to rollover. And if you forget, tough luck. Unlike what the app says, yes you can change this at anytime, but it will only be for going forward. If you forget and the next week starts it won’t recalculate. Stupid update. I’m going to have to find a new budget app.
Great tool
Up until today I’d have given this app five stars as it is a brilliant budgeting tool and really helped me manage my finances when I was in difficulty. I don’t think a subscription for a budgeting tool is a good idea, but I understand the developer needs to fund it. There was a glitch that meant I was asked to pay even though I’d previously paid for the app, but that is sorted now.
Rip-off
I bought this app about five years ago, and using it weekly — and now I cannot use the app anymore unless I cough up for (yet another) subscription. Thank you for the years the app did work, but you’ve just spat in my face; I guess I have to find another solution now.
UI change
I’ll be honest I haven’t updated the app in a while so I don’t know when these UI changes came about, but i accidentally deleted it the other day and had to reinstall and now the UI has changed when setting up a budget and honestly it’s ugly. The buttons are ugly, the floating lists with fake drop downs used to choose your settings (changed from the scroll menu) are ugly, the fact that i have to type in the decimal point now instead of it automatically being included is annoying. I wish developers would just let us CHOOSE how we want to interact with our apps instead of forcing UI changes on us that can never be modified. my app has looked and function same way for 10 years until now and i’m seething. ultimately still a good budgeting app though.

Maybe a winner
So I’m coming from YNAB and I’m used to that level of tracking everything and budgeting. I honestly have nothing against them except the yearly fee is kind of ridiculous. That’s what attracted me to this app that has a one time fee which I think is great. I’ve tried every budgeting app out there and this might be the one. I’m actually confused by the simplicity since YNAB has me thinking I have to track everything and you can’t do that here very well. I have to make my mind up if I value the complexity of YNAB or the simplicity of Pennies.

Really like the app, but want more from the Apple Watch version.
I really like using this app for one off budgets and really enjoy that there are Apple Watch widgets to see the total you have left on a budget. My biggest gripe is that if you have more than one budget, you can only use the budget that first on your list. I wish you could choose which budget you want to view on your watch. Would be a game changer!

Pretty useless?
The app interface is nice, however, I wouldn’t mind my money back as there is little point to this app - no assets and liabilities or reports or any kind of expense analysis, just a manual entry number counter? Unless I am fundamentally seeing the app wrong, there is no way to build and Analyse a budget or cash flow or anything of the sort?

Great money tool for when you are on a budget! Update: Although I do not agree with monthly or yearly subscriptions, I do appreciate the effort and the value this app offered at one point, for me. It is a great tool if you have the resources. Best

App doesn’t work
I’ve had this app for years (6+) and I use it in a bit of a backwards way where I assign my “budget” as what I really want my savings goal to be so I can see how much money I need to make each day doing freelance, side gigs, etc to meet that goal. This app has been fine for that until today when it took me back to the start screen so I clicked get started and nothing. Closed the app again and nothing. Went to the App Store and clicked on app support which just took me to their website talking about how great it is. My phone doesn’t show the app needing to be updated so I’m not sure what’s going on or if the app just finally died since it’s been the same for years

Not Very Useful
I don't get how this works for tracking expenses. I can really only see how it might be a little bit helpful when budgeting for something like a holiday. And you can't seem to add future expenses, the calendar wheel constantly takes you back to the current day. Sorry - I wouldn't have bothered rating but I paid for the app so it's a let down.
No longer syncs across devices!
I’ve been a long time user of this app and absolutely love the simplicity of it. But it no longer syncs across my devices like it used to do. This has been an issue for at least a year. Even though I have iCloud syncing enabled, the app doesn’t sync. Instead the little cloud icon just freezes up and never syncs.
Been a staple for a long time
This is one of those apps I’ve had on my phone for a long time. I use it on and off. But always a helpful app when I need to get back on track with my excess spending. Devs… two comments. I would really like to see usage of the new widgets! And most of all, in the widget I’d like the option to see how much I’ve spent in period and for today. It just seems to work better for me than how much is left.

Simple and incredibly useful
Like most people living through a cost of living crisis I am having to be a lot more budget conscious, so having an app like this is incredibly useful. I particularly like the Apple Watch interface. I have noticed recently however that some of my entries appear to have been automatically deleted, resulting in there appearing to be more money at the end of the month. Hopefully this is a bug the developer can address.
Not bad but...
...I emailed you in Aug 2016 asking that the app's badge show the balance remaining of the current budget, without the cents, so we don't need to open the app or Today widget to see it. You said it was a good idea, so... any news?
Nice for a single person!
Nicely designed, simple to use and it has an Apple Watch component as well! Can't use it though, since my wife and I share the budget and is single user only. We each have icloud accounts, and Apple makes sharing an icloud account painful and confusing.,If we could store the database as a shared icloud FILE, or dropbox, this would be a winner. Too bad.
Life Changing
I had this app on my phone for a few years before finally using it. I was in debt at the time and struggling. Finally, I decided to face my problem and I started using this app. I sure wish I had started it sooner! It got me on track and allowed me to see where I was spending my money and made me think before spending when I needed to save. I have now been using it faithfully for 3 years and it has truly changed my life for the better. Everyone should use this app! It takes seconds to track and you’ll happily see your bank account balances go up when you stay within your budget.
Find Something Else
I purchased this app with the intention of using it to track bills. What I got was a simple and clean, designed app with literally no way to use it for simple bill tracking. It allows you to create budgets, but perhaps I’m missing the trick for how to properly use it. Definitely not worth five dollars!

Is ok, find it odd the iMessage app has more capabilities (sharing) and they don’t sync together.
Was a great app
This app was great but recently it’s been very buggy and slow. Every time I open it it takes atleast 30 secs to stop loading and let me put information in, it also constantly forgets my budget name like it wants to reset itself
Achingly Slow App
Why use an app that takes 5 minutes to load? I’ve given this “productivity app” that much time to load up and it is wasting more time than it is helping. I will update this review once this issue is fixed (it’s been a year since developer decided to not address this issue despite the update stating otherwise)
Much improved
The horrendous performance and synch problems of a few years ago seem to be firmly in the past now (although I eventually had to delete all my previous entries and start again from scratch to get the app to function again even after the bug fixes went in as my existing data seemed to have been irreparably corrupted somehow which was a little annoying) but I’ve had no trace of a problem with the old creeping slowdown horrors since. I can recommend the app almost unreservedly now and am glad I didn’t abandon it completely as I almost did, with the only real proviso being that it would be nice to be able to create my own permanent categories without, for example, having to type out “Groceries” or “Parking” manually every time I buy same.
Apple Watch bugs
Great app for the iPhone but too many Apple Watch bugs.. keeps crashing and can't add expenses from the watch. Please fix.
Great App Annoying Bugs
Love this app used it for many years, but seems the support and updates aren’t very frequent, the date picker for inputting previous Expenses is completely broken and I’ve emailed the developer but no response. Such a shame as it’s a great app, just needs a little love!
