Constant nags. New version forces you to sign up for a trial in order to activate on first install. Keepassium is less trash.
Almost Awesome
Checks all the boxes for an off-cloud password-manager which synchronizes between devices (all offline on local network). Would have rated it 5 stars EXCEPT it has this very irritating issue where it constantly loses track that I’ve purchased the Pro version (required for syncing) and refuses to sync. Restoring the license always fails on first try. Fortunately, it works on second try. But I’m growing weary of telling it over and over and over that I have a Pro License when it forgets and refuses to sync.
Non-Functional and paywalled security keys
App keeps unlocking databases with a security key behind a monthly paywall. Tried it, wasn’t able to get my FIPS 140-2 Yubikey to work.
Capable app
Capable app with well designed UI although the free version spams with self promotion and the pro version is too expensive if you don’t need any of the advanced features. Seems to have lost its ability to read my files in Dropbox via files - was working great now it’s got some weirdly cached copy after an iOS upgrade
The future's uncertain and the end is always near
Just over a year ago I paid $40.99 for a “lifetime” license for the “Pro” version of this app. I’ve been very happy with this purchase but I am now concerned about it’s deprecation. 10 months ago the developer, Phoebe code Limited, released a new branch called “Strongbox Pro (Outright Purchase for Business)” and renamed the original app to “Strongbox - Keepass & PwSafe (The Premium KeePass Solution)”. Then three months ago released another branch called “Strongbox Zero (Local Only Database)”. My concern is this: The current release for the original app is now at 1.54.3 and the 2 branch versions are at 1.54.5 . Seeing that updates are trailing for this, the original product, and not for the newer branches is setting off a “Sunset Version” alarm in my mind. I will leave this review at three stars for now and will update based upon the developers response (or lack thereof).

This would be perfect if it weren’t for the near constant full screen prompts to upgrade to the pro version that get in the way when you’re trying to quickly look up a password or account.

I will update this review based on my feelings about the app after I’ve actually gotten to use it.
Best KeepassXC alternative on macOS
I have used strongbox for at least a year and half and almost forgot about the existence of it. Everything just feels so native and seamless. One of the sweetest functionality is passkey native integration. KeepassXC just couldn’t get their browser integration right, to use passkey I have to often restart kpxc. But with strongbox there’s no such problem.
Pro version not working on other devices
I paid for the pro version on my iPad so I could use Face ID on it. Got that working. My iPhone doesn’t acknowledge that I have the pro version so I can’t use Face ID on it. If we can get this figured out I will be glad to change rating as I do love the app but I need it to recognize my Pro version on my iPhone.
Have had Pro for years, now hassled to upgrade
I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes since Strongbox was sold by the original developer. My facts are that I have a pro account and yet keep getting bothered to upgrade. I will reassess the 3 star (previously 5 star) ranking if they fix this bug which feels designed to build revenue rather than serve existing clients. Besides this new concern, I continue to love the product.

Terrific app
Used to be great, crashes making it unusable
I used it many years and it had always been rock solid. Now with the latest version I accidentally nuked a folder with passwords (not in its backups anymore) and as I was trying to look through some database files, the app constantly keeps crashing and it was impossible to add/open other files due to these crashes. Very disappointing, avoid.
Great password manager (pushy on the subscriptions tho)
Already on Pro yet still getting prompted to upgrade multiple times while using the app.
Wichtiges Feature fehlt immer noch
Warte seit Jahren darauf, dass das URL Matching auch mit Wildcards/REGEX geht. Sehr nervig, dass bei URL mit wechselnden Subdomain-Nummerierungen (z.B. „sub123.domain.tld“) immer sehr viele Treffer angezeigt werden.

Great password manager. I switched from 1Password and have no regrets. I love the wifi sync system and the ability to export to an open standard format.
Spyware?!
It knew my password before I typed it in?! How did it know that?! It must be saving my passwords somehow inside of it and possibly even transmitting it elsewhere like a server. No thanks!!!

Doesn't work with webdav
When I try to connect to webdav server (nextcloud), after choosing my passwords file it says “... davkit error 503”. Tried to fix that, restarted and reinstalled app, but nothing helped
Import from msecure ?
I give up. Where is the menu or instructions to do this, or do I need to go through a csv export then import ?

Great for Apple Users All-Around
I’ve used many password managers over the years. Lastpass, 1Password, Dashlane, and Bitwarden. After abandoning my Windows PC for a MacBook Pro, I was unhappy with the lack of of true integration with iOS and macOS applications. Bitwarden has promised integration with macOS, but it is slow in coming. I found Strongbox on Reddit and decided to give it a shot. I’m very pleased with the usability and functionality. It works just like the integrated Passwords app and reduces the number of taps/clicks to login vs Bitwarden and others. It has all the features I could want. The only thing I would love to see added is the ability to create my own templates for storing information. Currently, you have logins and credit cards. I have more record types I would like to create with their own custom fields. I am hoping Strongbox will add this functionality in the future. For now, I am happy to use the Login record and just add additional fields to it that I need. Well done! 🥳
SELL OUT!!
It truly pains me to say this, but since the original DEV Mark (Strongbox Founder) had turned out to be a complete sell-out, of their masterpiece app, I'm even more skeptical that these DEV’s will maintain it with the same dedication; just look at ‘Bartender’ app. Maybe Mark should have considered selling it to LastPass, because they too, “cared” about your privacy and security. 😂 It's like selling a Picasso at a garage sale and expecting a random stranger to care about it just as much as the sell-out did. That’s how you explore the market, and then you find ways to exploit it! Let the second stage begin! As such, the best I can possibly EVER and will give, is 2 stars. Only because to give the only credit where credit is due.

Probleme mit 2fa Codes bei Einträgen, die gar kein 2fa haben ist noch immer nicht behoben. Nicht empfehlenswert. Bin gerade am Testen. Aktuell bei KeePassium. Werde dort noch bleiben bis folgende Probleme ausgemerzt sind: - OTP: Strongbox zeigt bei Einträgen, die zb durch einen Wechsel mit Import entstanden sind, bei OTP Feldern, die nur „key=“ enthalten und keinen echte Key haben, einen einmal Code an. Der ist natürlich falsch. Strongbox muss unvollständige OTP Einträge ignorieren können. Habe 200 Einträge mit falschen OTP die es gar nicht gibt bzw. Geben soll. Werde jetzt nicht per Hand aus 200 Einträgen das key= prefix löschen. - pdf: angefügte PDF müssen in der App einsehbar sein ohne erst teilen zu müssen. Sorry. iOS sollte da alles onboard mitbringen. Ansonsten vielversprechende App. Mit fairem Jahresplan. Die lifetime Variante würde mit 49,99 besser angenommen werden.
Been using for years!
I don't think I've written a review, but I've been using Strongbox on my Mac and iPhone for years! It just works with no problem and syncs great over iCloud. I originally picked Strongbox because it used open source password formats so I wouldn't be locked in if I didn't like it. While I still appreciate that feature, I don't see any reason why I'll have to take advantage of it!
Too expensive
For an app that uses an open source software to handle the password database, this app is insanely expensive. Again, the software this app is built upon is open source. The dev has the audacity to ask $25/year, $3/month, or $100 for lifetime premium. I get the dev did have to do work, but the prices are absurd considering the hard part (handling the database) was done for them.
Great for everything but passkeys
I’ve been using this app for a few years now, and even bought the lifetime license. It’s been great, except for passkeys. For some reason this app breaks whenever I try to save passkeys from every one of my iOS apps to my db (it both fails to save the key and crashes upon retry). I’m on the latest iOS 26.1, my DB is less than 100KB. Gave up after digging through the settings and subreddit/GitHub. Ended up trying a competitor (that offers similar services, including a pretty neat “rent-to-own” pricing model), which worked seamlessly. So long, Strongbox. It’s been a pleasure after all these years, but I’m moving on to greener pastures.
Facial recognition doesn't work to unlock for Apple Password functionality
I have been using Strongbox free of charge for some time. I purchased the lifetime subscription without first giving a trial a try. I purchased the software in order to use facial recognition unlock especially for use with Apple Password functionality. So, I was fooled. Wasted money on the lifetime subscription.
Buggy at times… back up your dbs!
The latest update has resulted in the app crashing immediately upon trying to open a database. I’ve had one too many problems with this app to the point my confidence in it has me looking for another solution. Updated review 11-25: Appreciate the quick fix to the latest update, thank goodness I frequently back up though and could import my db to another app.
Great password manager with hardware key support
Great password manager. I really like the support for hardware security keys and passkeys. Autofill works smoothly every time. It’s reliable and easy to use
What Am I Missing?
What is one to think of an iOS app that offers integration with third-party storage: OneDrive DropBox Google Drive BUT NOT ICLOUD?
Activism interest
Came to the app to integrate with another database software on iOS. Have been happy with app features so far and really impressed with dev support for activist interests of their users. Hopeful that the free and paid versions continue to be accessible and useful!
Pretty but very limited
The application is well designed. Paying features are fair, but the price is too high for what it’s worth to me. Also no auto-type is a deal-breaker to me, as auto-fill is far from being available everywhere…
Good work
It is bit annoying that every time you trigger the auto-fill, you need text the master password again. Also, the OTP for proton (proton mail/protonvpn) is not generated correctly with the same entry compared to KeePassXC and Google Authenticator.

Greedy Devs at work
To preface, I have never written a review before. The developers of this app did something so egregious that I decided I had to write a review. This app used to be really nice. I could save all my passwords in one place, and still use autofill from other apps. Originally, getting the “Pro” features only cost $40. This included being able to use FaceID to unlock the app, being able to download favicons, and a few other features that I didn’t really care about. I bought it back then, and then I realized that was stupid. I should just type in my password, using faceID wasn’t worth $40. So I refunded it. But lo and behold! I kept the features! For 2 years I still had the premium features! It was so nice! Then recently, when I opened the app again, I was met with a pop up. It basically said “hi user! You know those features you had? Well we took them away. And now, to get them back, it’s gonna cost only $30… PER MONTH!” There is literally nothing in this app that deserves a monthly subscription. The only things that could possibly warrant monthly subscriptions are cloud-based features, or anything that requires the app to use a service requiring a monthly subscription. It has none of these things. Now let’s just say it did have one of those things. In what world would it require enough subscriptions to total to $30/month?? That is just greed from the devs. Don’t get this app. The Apple Passwords app has all of the important features this app had, but it doesn’t bleed your bank account.
Careful, AppLause
Twice now I’ve opened the app to find it asking me for a subscription again, despite lifetime purchase. So far “restore purchases” has worked. But that never, ever happened under Mark. One star down for now and it has me looking for alternatives. But Mark made such a great app, it still is better than any other. Please, please AppLause, don’t squeeze it to death.

Testing Strongbox
User of the 1Password app (old version 6), on iMac, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Linux, I have been testing Strongbox for a few days because it seems to be the best in using keepass databases for my spouse and myself except that... the step is really high and finally I start to hesitate to make the move. 1P's display is much more user friendly and the ability to open multiple windows in editing, auto-fill is also very powerful, and the ability to sort group fields is sorely missing... Of course there are also many positive points.
Latest update takes away Face ID
This is a great app but the release notes don’t mention that to retain Face ID you must upgrade to a more expensive product. This can be bypassed by simply using the Password app to fill in the Strongbox password
Avoid - original dev sold out
I’ve been a lifetime subscriber and booster of Strongbox for years now, but after learning the original dev threw all of his users under the bus to the literal worst buyer he could find, I’ll be making the hard choice to move to alternatives on both MacOS and iOS. They’re already packing it with analytics and constant server contacts and not giving you the option to disable the check, just because you made the mistake of using the in-app upgrade instead of the standalone purchase. They will almost certainly be coming for lifetime users in general soon. Customer support has already taken a complete dive and the focus is moving to features nobody asked for while removing the niche options that made Strongbox so fully featured. Don’t trust the previous, raving reviews. This is a very different beast now.
I’m loving it!
Strongbox is an app for accessing KeePass databases. Its strong point is that it support the Apple ecosystem and works with various browsers. It works with passkeys, OTP, etc. Many features power users would find helpful.

Broken touchid means broken app
Sadly my iPad has a broken touchid and when opening the app it says it requires touchid to unlock. Is there any way to continue to us this app or am I needing to cancel my subscription?
