Good content, bad app
If you just want my to read the articles, just go to the web site. The app doesn’t remember where you left off. If I am reading an article and leave the app to answer a call or a text message, the app reloads when I go back to it, and I lose my place. This is really weird behavior. I might keep the app for the games, but I’ll just go to the web to read the articles. At least Safari keeps track of where I was, even when it refreshes the page.
Great content but app needs fix
Love the content! Really love the audio!! BUT app issues. I pause the audio, start it again and the article plays from the beginning. If I leave the app even for a second it reboots. No other apps do this on iPhone pro 15. Make using it frustrating. Tried contacting support but their app won’t let me!

Forced Subscription
I expect better these days than a surprise 3 mo subscription after a monthly sign up. Also have to go through several steps to request (not actually achieve) a cancellation. Scams work this way - it's a shame New Scientist does as well.
Incredibly intellectually stimulating
As I read an article my mind races to exciting new places. These “places” have vistas that are beautiful beyond description!
App is not scalable.
Unlike many other apps, you cannot make the print larger. This is an enormous shortcoming. Their demographic may just include older people with scientific interests. The app should be more accessible.
Top notch content 2ed class app
I have been a subscriber to New Scientist since 1964 when I received a subscription as a 16th birthday gift. It is still the best general science publication available in English and as a weekly they break a lot of news now that quality daily newspapers have been gutted of quality reporters. This app would be fine if I could adjust the text size and font. I have written to the publication several times since this app was released. Once this app has how it handles text size and font selection I will be glad to change this rating to 5 star

I like audio on an I phone I also like how when I read an article of interest you immediately show me similar articles in your library that could be of interest to me and is related Very important Please make sign in as easy as possible Yes content may be stolen by bad people BUT!!! A difficult sign in also means content is stolen from many more paying subscription holders Their time is very important. Endless hassles to your subscription holders means they STOP putting up with your worries about theft of content I am increasingly just going to my 20 dollar a month AI account. As no endless sign in hassles. No asking me the password for my grandmother’s sewing bee. AI has instant Access and gives science answers not with a 5000 word essay but an answer to my science questions in a few hundred words. You are not competing with content thieves You are competing with an AI account that never asks for passwords and responds succintly
Can’t read the articles
I do not have the subscription. That being said I make sure I limit the number of articles I actually go into every month bc you are only allowed 3. For the past 4 months I have not been allowed to read ANY OF THE ARTICLES. I go into read an article I am genuinely interested in and I automatically get closed out saying I need to buy the subscription . I should have 3 free articles every month per user agreement. I literally cannot access any articles and because of this am continually missing out on important information I would like to learn. Fix this or get back to me cuz this is highly frustrating.

Love the publication but the app could use some minor improvements - scrolling articles is jumpy because of the nav bar - scroll acceleration is also on for some reason, this is usually a feature to mimic macOS on windows, not sure why it’s happening on iOS - no search, at least I was not able to find it
Not connected from site
Good articles. I’m a subscriber. It doesn’t jump from a twitter link to the page in app. In app, no search function. It’s so stressful. Please fix it!
No App Support so I must write here.
Where is the 'Favorite This' Button? Where is the 'Back' Button? I received a Notification of an article which I wanted to save to read in the morning. I could not find a 'Save' or 'Favorite' Button, though it may have been in plain sight somewhere. So, I thought, maybe I must hit 'Favorites', in there top right corner, if I remember. Of course that listed all of nothing, those Favorites which I had saved. Maybe I couldn't find the button ever since I have downloaded this App maybe a week ago. So I tested getting back to my article by pressing each of the buttons beneath. Nothing. No way to get back to what one is reading. I certainly would not pay anything for an App like this. Is it because it is late that I cannot find a button?

Sensational News. Charged me during free trial.
Titles all feel like they are geared toward the sensational/dramatic side of news instead of focusing on factual science. I was charged even though I cancelled during free trial.

Content great, new app sucks
Love the content but the new app forced on us a couple weeks ago is a massive down grade. Very disappointing. I can no longer see which articles I’ve read or even which issue I’m on. And night mode has disappeared. Very frustrating to try to read. Was much better before “upgrade”
New Scientist
The magazine is wonderful, but the app barely works with iOS9 . . . crashes frequently, won't load some copies, won't delete others. Bloatware.

Ban Banner Ads for Paid Subscription
New Scientist (a great magazine by the way) I now places banner ads (driven through Google) at the bottom of every article page with the latest app update even on a fully paid subscription. No option to pay an additional amount for removal of these banner ads. This isn’t ethical as the ads also appear on all prior paid subscriptions when no ads appeared before. These prior magazine issues were stored on my iPhone (or so I thought). These prior subscriptions were paid at a higher rate then than now so how is it the ads can now be placed on my prior paid subscriptions where they didn’t appear. I suggest that New Scientist decision makers rethink their monitizing policy change. Otherwise it is hasta la vista. Update as of 3NOV2019 Happy to say that the banner ads don’t appear any more for paid subscriptions. Excellent magazine as I did acknowledge earlier and still is.
Great content, app needs some tweaks
Only disappointments are with app design: 1. when reading in Night Mode with low brightness and Night Shift on (how I have it set all the time), linked text (in red) are nearly impossible to read while parts of the article still have bright white background as if “extra info” ignores fact night mode is on 2. When checking for updated content (nearly every time app opens) please remember which article I was reading and where in the article I was and go back to that spot rather than to all the cover pages. I can easily see cover pages by pressing home icon but have to manually toggle through them and scroll down articles to find where I last was
Not perfect
If you're a long time reader of the paper magazine, you may not like this app. Different feel, article titles are different, no new content. Why not provide us with something closer to The Economist on iPad? For me, even a straight PDF of the magazine would be better than this. At least, I'm now getting NS on time!

I paid $100 for a subscription that the app does not recognize. I am out the money, and New Scientist refuses to do anything to help me.
Two improvements needed
Should be able to change to a sans serif font like Calibri to make it easier to read. In dark mode it is very hard to read the red text. Try some other colour. Love the magazine.
More bugs
When I read an article from the magazine, there is always the top thick panel with white background and black icons on top of the white background. I find it annoying because it cannot be hidden or changed to white icons over blackground (night-mode). Grateful to root up the bugs.
A better life with science
New Scientist makes important scientific understandings accessible to non scientists. It’s a great publication.
Unable to cancel
I have about 3 weeks to cancel (new subscription) but there is no “manage subscription” page.. just a 1/4 page of nonsense in very small print. WTH?
Good app
Good magazine
Far inferior to Zinio
Was reading NS in Zinio, then switched to this. Landscape mode cuts off images with no way to scroll to see the rest, app always opens on table of contents instead of where you left off reading, no way to bookmark anything. Terrible reading experience.
Very navigable, short informative pieces
I love these dense scientific three minute reads. Much more fact based and long term news than the 24 hour cycle. I wish all articles were listenable but there are many.
The best content in the worst app
I have read and loved New Scientist for over 2 decades. This app does not do justice to the content. The app retains control of how and when content is downloaded. If you’re in airplane mode, for example, or commuting in a metro with no reliable Wi-Fi, you’ll find that the app did not download most images. Or it stopped the download after a few sections. Or, worst of all, it automatically deleted content you’d spent time downloading. When I say “spent time downloading “, I mean just that. You must scroll to the end of every page for the entire issue if you want it to land safely on your tablet. But don’t go too far, because you don’t want to trigger auto-delete by accident! It is only because the magazine is so good that I put up with this nonsense. Maybe I’ll try Zeno instead.
Enjoy my subscription, in-app browser lacks features
Really enjoy the selection of informative, well-written articles. What bums me most is opening links in the in-app browser is a dead end; there's no option to open the page in Safari so I can save to read later instead of interrupting my flow.
Joy and Wisdom
News in general or even hearing bits of what is happening in the world nowadays can be (is!) frustrating and aggravating. Reading about new discoveries, insights and changes to largely accepted knowledge is exciting - and relaxing. I find it so encouraging that disciplined and civil scientific debate continues, and the breadth of topics and accessible reporting engage my mind without stressful thinking. So I enjoy reading about new learning in and about our world, and can relax without the vexing politics and human affairs in general. It leaves me grateful and fascinated in this amazing world that we live in.
In app purchase doesn’t work
The in app feature doesn’t work. I can’t log on with my Apple account ID. Good content, but for a science app, you think they’d know how technology works.
Sharing New Scientist Articles Disabled
Unfortunately the iTunes version of New Scientist does not allow us to share articles via email, even to yourself! Best to get New Scientist directly from them.
Most engaging and informative magazine I read
New Scientist consistently publishes, accessible, fascinating, and timely articles about everything from snails to planets to universes and back to gut bugs. I still love the economist in the New Yorker, but if I had to give up one magazine, it would not be New Scientist.
I paid $99.99 but got nothing.
In my iPad settings, this app is listed as paid until next March, but the app can’t be made to recognize this and it demands another year’s subscription. There are far better, far less buggy places to read about science on the internet. And this app’s layout is also ugly.
Almost great
As good as the print edition, however the links that go to other articles rarely (actually never) work. That interactivity and info networking would be the point to me of an online edition. However everything else works the way it should and its convenient, thus 4 stars.
