Quick for a busy lifestyle
I used to read the whole Economist but I switched jobs and didn’t have the time anymore. This is great. I still get updates on the most important stuff. I feel like I’m still connected to what’s going on in the world.
App will charge without access
Espresso’s ‘restore’ functionality is broken and will charge you without allowing access
Students get it free
Been using this as a student. Used to subscribe to the economist but I can’t afford that with the way the economy headed. Still thankful for the espresso
Okay but needs optimisation
The app is feature-wise fine, however what should be a simple and elegant reading experience is marred by performance issues. The main issue I have is that when going between many screens the animation is very laggy. This is most noticeable when opening articles — the main point of the app — where it looks like it tries to generate the article while it’s opening, which will inevitably be inefficient. Better to pre-load the article before it’s opened, or let it open and then load it. It’s a design choice that makes the app feel sluggish. The main Economist app doesn’t suffer from this problem.
App has degraded and increased 170% in price
The content they provide in this app is still 5-stars. I’ve been subscribing to this app for probably 8 years, and for most of that time it has been rock solid. However, recently the app itself has been getting more and more buggy. Literally *every day* now the “subscribe” popup pops up, and I have to tap “restore subscription”, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Of course this decline in quality has been accompanied by a 170% price increase. The content quality is amazing, but the small quantity is not worth $80/year. Thankfully I’m grandfathered in on the old price. Please fix what used to be a great app, and charge a reasonable price!
A smooth digital expresso!
Expresso gives me the essentialist amount of information that I need to know for the day about the world’s political economy. Not too American, not too much information, and not too visually distracting.
Does not recognize my subscription
I have been a subscriber through the App Store for a decade now, and the app recently stopped recognizing my subscription, even though I’m still paying.
Video player
The video player hasn’t been working on my app which is really disappointing because the content is so good and I can’t watch it
Overpriced
Espresso is some $79 bucks for just 4 or 5 articles daily, ie 1/3 the price of regular economist, but for much much less than 1/3 of the articles… and to pick the 4 or 5 free articles or just topics, you have to let the share your data…ie the one article you want to read, sorry not included in this app.
Flaky app
The app delivers great content, but it is not great at being stable. It logs me out randomly and if I’m on the plane and trying to read offline, it’ll disconnect if the screen goes off. The app could use improvement instead of me having to “restore subscription” almost on a daily basis. This is difficult if my internet is slow.
Perfect amount of news for the day
I needed a slim news experience that avoids the hang wringing or triumphalism in a lot of news coverage. The espresso app scratches that itch!
Feedback within app????
Impossible to provide in app feedback because link does not work. Wonder why!!??
Issues opening links
It would be nice if I didn’t have to log in again on the Economist website when opening links in the app.
Surface level news
I really like the Economist, but I can’t afford an extra $300 a year on top of my other news subscriptions. The content barely scratches the surface. I can get more information just from reading the notifications from my Apple News+ subscription. Don’t waste your $90. Get the Times or the Post. I already cancelled my subscription.
Lightweight, but ok
A daily news update from the economist is a great idea. Audio-delivery is very good. The interface is ok, but gets a little confused if you had not completed the previous edition. The goddamn idiotic trivia game that takes up 20% of the time is so out of place that it boggles the mind - I do not want another public radio time-waster.
Great addition of international translations
I greatly appreciate the opportunity to read the morning roll-up of the news in German. I have long trusted the Economist‘s fact based reporting, deep analysis, and relatively unbiased journalism.
Horrible. DO NOT TAKE FREE TRIAL
Inadequate content and atrocious experience cancelling the free trial. I expected more integrity.
Excellent but problems with subscription
Typically high standard journalism from the Economist however every time I start the app I have to restart it and check the subscription, often several times.
Stuck on video
I love this app, but… Having for once used a video selection I can no longer return to the home page. “Home” seems to be the video selections. Removing and reinstalling the app changed nothing. How do I get back to the “start” page?!
Content
Although the goal of the app is evident in its name - the content is nonetheless a little too brief to be meaningful in my opinion.
great
great app
TRASH "NEWS"
cancelled after 2 days of a subscription. their news is so biased to the point of being incorrect... blatantly just not reporting events, misattributing causes etc. on which every reputable news source agrees. i'm a student and i was looking for a good news subscription to keep up w international politics. the economist highly disappointed me. it reads like a tiktok/tabloid with how untrue and blatantly opinionated it is. i know all news has bias, but the economist is way too biased to the point of not being reliable. i guess its reputation is outdated
Valuable daily digest
I find the content to be well-curated, balanced, timely and relevant with a nice dash of humor thrown in.
Great app but personalised content limited
Is there any way I can personalise my feed by choosing topics without allowing my data to be sold onto third parties? It seems to use the personalisation feature I must enable data to be on sold. Hope I’m missing something??? I am paying ~30$ per month so would expect full access to features.
Efficient but costly
Would like a little more news or make the subscription price a little less.
Comprehensive and convenient
I love that I can get a concentration of the most important world news and stream it on my radio For my early morning drive to work. Brilliant!!
Text size setting does not work
The app has a setting to select text size but this slider does not appear to do anything.
The failure of your magazine
You lake if respect for the capabilities of the sitting President, and especially your ignorance of the dynamics of US election. Cancel my subscription , sad after so many years but I have observed your flash and your judgement decline. Essel Bailey
Confusing Data Tracking Policy
The option for “Do Not Sell My Data” offered, however, it is stated that the app will still collect and share personal data with 3rd-parties when it benefits the UX of the service. Why give an option at all? Furthermore, if “Do Not Sell My Data” is enabled the ability to select interest for the 3 daily redirects back to the Privacy Settling page until the option is disabled. The main condensed content available aside from this is well written easy to access.
Missing
Keep getting yesterday’s headlines by mistake.
Espresso by The Economist
Relevant topics discussed at a high level by experts, all in a particularly bite size format which is a great way to consume information. Espresso is a great place to start for students wanting to get interested in global trends and the latest news.
Virtually (?) impossible to cancel
Am now 25 minutes into trying to cancel my subscription. Ridiculous.
Espresso too Lite?
Am enjoying quick reads with Espresso but would more enjoy a little more length and incisiveness. Perhaps quick links to backup articles without having to leave the app?
Pay to read or redirect to browser
This app lasted seconds. Every article but one required a subscription, the one article I could read was opened in browser, Great idea, but tired of downloading apps only to be told I need a subscription afterwards
Exchange rates
Bring back the exchange rates and markets!! Why did you get rid of that?! Also since now it comes out on european midday, i only have time to read it at night. Bring back the morning edition!!
Great
Great app does everything it’s supposed to do. Maybe people you guys should add a comments feature
Great content, but unacceptably buggy
I have always loved the economist espresso, but it’s audio version is horrifically buggy. Whenever you open the app, it still plays the edition of an old (vs current) day and you need to shut down and re-open the app multiple times in order to get to the latest current version. Sometimes, even that doesn’t work - please fix!
Almost perfect
Just make the light/dark mode automatically toggle based on the system theme!
Connection problems
The problem I have with this app is even when the day’s content has been downloaded it normally needs internet connectivity to display it. So reading out of reception, for example on the Tube, is often impossible.
Negative changes
I loved this app before the new version when I’m no longer able to access previous days of news. This is a lack of flexibility to catch up on previous days (I believe the previous version went back a week) & check back if desired. I don’t know why so much content was erased, less value for a higher cost too.
Refreshing
A magnificent achievement. This app is easy to use and to the point. I love the easy access to videos and podcasts. The economist staff has done an amazing job on this one. Nice work!
Can’t re-read
Literally the product manager on this should be a case study on how not to design a product. If you quit the app early, you’ll lose the ability to go back
Great Daily Briefing
Really enjoying this app. It gives you a good overview of the news without dragging you down in detail when you don't want it. I'd give it five stars if the dark mode setting reflected the system setting instead of needing to be changed manually.
Comes out too late
The news update comes out too late for Australian east coast users (and I imagine New Zealand!) I need my news available at 6am, otherwise i won’t get to it. This seems to come out between 7 and 8.30, and not at a consistent time, meaning I rarely get to read it.
Perfect but for one thing
Despite being a paid app, this app also seems to contain full screen ads with no visual clues on how to skip them (swipe). I don’t mind ads but it’s a bit rich having such large and obnoxious (and irrelevant) ones in an app I’m also paying to use. Ads aside, it’s a good app - cheaper and concise access to daily highlights from an otherwise prohibitively expensive publication.
just like an espresso
unforgettable, buttery, silky in a 5-10 min drink.
Terrible Experience Cancelling - TRYER BEWARE!
I tried the trial and didn't find it valuable. So I went to Manage My Subscription and tried to cancel. They make it VERY DIFFICULT! They go back and forth using what appears to be a chatbot. They ask you why you're cancelling, over and over. They offer you upgrades. They offer you discounts. Back and forth, back and forth - even tho with each reply I just played "broken record" with them and simply replied, "No. Just cancel." Over and over. Finally, they cancelled. What should have taken one minute took about 15 (including an aborted first attempt because their site wouldn't register my responses that time and I had to start over). I am surprised. I thought The Economist would hold itself to higher standards.
Great app
But it was better when it displayed market data at the end
Not iPad friendly
The display does not adapt to iPad screen, looks like it’s only made for iPhones, which is a shame.
Informative but expensive subscription.
The application is very great with informative articles but I don't see any point of a subscription of Rs.190/mo. when there are other news applications already present free of cost.
