Subscription Disappeared
I bought a subscription last month when they had a big sale. It did work shortly thereafter. I just went to read an article & it will not open. So I try ‘restore purchase’ & it says nothing found under my Apple ID. I did not think it was even done through the App Store but through a link on their page. So I went to look for the screenshot of my receipt. On inspection there is a long weird email shown which I did not put in. I did not notice it on the confirmation page. So now I do not have any access, & I am worried about where that payment went. I will have to follow up with my bank. Beware.

Offline reading impossible
The app keeps trying to load ads while offline. I ride the subway and it is impossible to read your article even when the article is loaded. Scrolling down to read more will result in the app freezing as it is “desperately” trying to monetize. They have ads inserted on every paragraph and it is super annoying to read.
What happened to the audio version of which article?
In the past, I have been able to click on the audio and listen to the article being read. I no longer see that option available. Please bring it back.

I am asked to put in my user name and password every time I read news. It’s driving me crazy.
Lacks proper archive feature for readers to access past SCMP
There should be a feature/ way for readers to be able to obtain a full and complete picture of what articles were published for each day’s past SCMP newspaper. For example, if I wanted to read the full SCMP for 25 December 1985, there should be a button that I could click to enable the webpage to present the SCMP as it was on 25 Dec 1985.

There is a big blue block on the first page opening the app. Can’t use the app.
SCMP gets me dialed in better
Bringing this complex world into sharper focus is not easy task. by reading SCMP i can become more informed and confused everyday.
Another china bashing publication
Three issues: 1. The publication only prints negative views about China. Even the ones that are positive, they twist it to make it sound negative. 2. Heavily moderated commenting, also the AI used to filter the comments is really poor. It filters out normal comments. To bypass the filtering - find synonyms or add a space or dot”.” in the middle of the word, like this by.pass instead of bypass. 3. The app is buggy, it’s a javascript application that hangs when commenting and u lose everything, sometimes refreshes why writing, the book marks sometimes are not saved
Screen top ad-banner annoying
Always love SCMP and the app but the latest update having the ad-banner on top of the screen caused a bit of annoyance.

South China Morning News Provides Timely and Pertinent Reliable News
Good news service but poor app function
I enjoy SCMC’s coverage. However, at HK$83/month, I shouldn’t be forced to watch advertisement pop-ups with countdown clocks. These pop-up ads in the app really degrade the experience and cheapen the SCMP brand. Additionally, when clicking through to an SCMP article from another website like Facebook, there’s no “Open in App” button, so it’s difficult to get past the pay wall despite being a paid subscriber. Edit: another unavoidable pop-up today with no desirable option – either “add this section to the top menu” or “remind me next week”. I can’t just read the article without choosing one. Why???
Ads remove please
As a yearly paid subscriber, I cannot stand that ads are very common. Please remove them.
Terrible UX/UI
They tried to make it work nicely with gestures, however due to poor implantation, the swipes don’t actually do what you want them to do. Easier just to use the website
Slow loading news and images
I have been using this app in Mainland China. The app layout seems to be designed well however all the images take forever to load and when clicking and article it takes a while for it to open.

Solid reporting with interesting stories. Surprised that the candor expressed has not been suppressed. Worth reading to understand what’s happening in the China sphere.
The English mouthpiece for the CCP
There is so much propaganda and biased reporting for the china communist party . This is HK version of the China Daily !
Topical. Paid version should remove ads
Obviously a staple source for news in HK. However, the app is fairly expensive for maintaining ads - especially ticking-clock ads. Decided not to renew based on this feature.
Ads with Audio Enabled Upon Opening App
There I am, in my quiet but crowded work office when I get an interesting news article notification from this app. I click the notification expecting to be taken straight to the article, when instead an ad with a literal screaming person starts going off and breaking the office silence. To add, my phone was on silent mode! I don’t know how I could have prevented that from happening, and I no longer trust opening this app in quiet environments in fear of causing me embarrassment.
Can’t adjust font size
The font is too small and there’s no setting to change it. Maybe this new version is targeted at younger readers.
Essential Source
I find SCMP most informative and an up to date source of information for Asia. Its articles are timely, to the point, drawing attention to hitherto unknown facts. No serious student of regional politics and economics can afford to miss this essential source of information.

Good, with some flaws
Overall, I enjoy the content and the generally balanced reporting of news on China. However, there are several suggestions and room for improvement in my opinion: 1. The app should support dark mode so that it makes it easier for readers to read at night or those who want to read the news after they just woke up. 2. Better UI design for iPads. Right now, it is very awkward to operate on iPad, especially when one clicks on an article. The half menu half content display is very uncomfortable and unnecessary. 3. Comment section should be integrated with the page, not be directed to another page
Issue
Can you please STOP with the advertisement playing sound whenever the app is opened? It’s such a pain to open the app and the advertisement plays with sound, especially when it’s an advertisement about some goofy children’s app. This is a professional app so I would expect a lot more in terms of professionalism. Please have the sound muted by default for advertisements. Thank you
Fine content, UI to be improved
Excellent, impartial news content on affairs at home and abroad. Rating would be higher if presentation in landscape mode were restored for the iPad, lack of which at the moment is somewhat irritating.
Please add dark mode
SCMP has been my trusted source for all news related to China. The digital version delivers the same quality of journalism over the years, and I enjoy it. One thing I greatly appreciate is to add the dark mode support of the app. This fix will make the app more eye-friendly and easier to use in late night.
Still charge you full price if you cancel during trial.
After seeing a lot of ads even with the paid version, I decided to cancel. Then I realized that the trial period perhaps is not a trial. IOS says I will still be charged $100 and more. Sounds like some kind of scam, if we think about it. Watch out! Also, the editors need to learn how to be objective on both sides of their stories, and make the headlines less sensational. Even if I still have access to the product, I chose to delete the app. It’s bad mental health.

Wide spread of interesting articles throughout , daily reading can be a chore luckily I learnt a thing or two about speed reading. Digestion or fake news ... new buzz !

Used to enjoy using the app to browse the news. With the addition of intrusive ads, however, I’ve been using this app less and less and just directly going to the website instead.

Please fix ultra sensitive/reactive links in app
You guys need to make clicking links in the app less sensitive/reactive to touch. Trying to read through one article and at least 5 times I’d get taken to another page simply because while scrolling I’d touch one of the links in the articles. Can you make it so it takes more deliberate effort to hit one of the links in an article?

News Goes Offline after Waking Up from Sleep Mode
When reading news, sometimes the phone goes into sleep mode. Touching the screen again wakes up the phone but the news is offline.
Can’t adjust font size
I hope the developer will allow users to adjust the font size of articles. The current font size is a little big. (I’m talking about the iPad version which doesn’t have the A+ icon)
