What people like
- No annoying ads or trackers.
- Developer fixes bugs quickly.
- Feels like the old Apollo app.
What they complain about
- Search results are often useless.
- App crashes and hangs frequently.
- Videos play loudly by default.
- Login issues keep users out.
Just go for it you won’t regret it
No ads, intuitive, and flexible
Doesn’t load anything
Won’t load a single post, feed, or sub. Is this app decommissioned or something?
Pretty good
This is definitely better than the awful official reddit app, but recent changes have made videos restart when going full screen and they take forever to load, which is pretty annoying. Stuff also sometimes is slow to load in general, but perhaps that’s Reddit’s API? Overall recommend
Not it
Doesn't work. Subreddits literally just missing posts
Still Missing Some Features
The app is basically good, and can be configured to act a lot like Apollo did back in its prime. The one glaring omission is that you still can’t set videos/GIFs to play muted by default. You have to manage the volume on your device, rather than just allowing audio when something that requires it comes along. It’s very clumsy and disruptive for an app that is otherwise a pretty decent browsing experience.
This app is the only reason I still use Reddit
Great app, I don't think you even have to be signed in to use it - I wasn't for a while because it was just nice to not need to use the browser version of Reddit and even the browser version is better than the official app! This app is great
Nothing Loads
Nothing loads. Not home, not popular, not all, not any search. Nothing but the settings. Disappointing.
I really love the app I just would like it more if
It would mix up what it shows on the home feed more from different subs
I know we don’t have much options but COME ON
I can live with the fact that it doesn’t update live. But I couldn’t even get into my profile. It keeps refreshing, and couldn’t access a single post!
iPad doesn’t work
Nothing loads on iPad , works fine on mobile as of July 1, 2026
Elegant and always improving
Nothing out there compares to the simplicity and elegance Hydra offers. It feels natively Apple. The dev team is actively involved in making this the premier Reddit experience with frequent updates. Love it!
Ok Reddit client but can be a battery hog
Would be a good Reddit client if the app wouldn’t randomly decide to drain my battery in the background when not in use.
Great Reddit app
As an Alien Blue, Apollo, and Comet veteran, this app is up there with the best Reddit readers iOS has had. The developer puts in hard work to make it better.
Meh
App would be decent if it didn’t lock most things users actually want behind a paywall. No access to any NSFW subs without premium? Lame-o.
Good in principle.
I like the idea behind it. It reminds of Apollo in some ways, especially the swipe gestures of course. But it lacks all of the polish. It hangs, crashes, bugs out, resets my progress in scrolling through comments and home feed. And none of these things happen rarely. They happen every time I open the app. I really enjoy the rest of the time, but it makes it very hard to enjoy using it.
Even better than Apollo?
Hydra is very similar to Apollo, but has an improved gallery mode and doesn’t require using a Reddit API. Happy to support with the Pro membership, but also great without. They don’t use the official API, so I think there is a possibility that Reddit will update something that breaks Hydra. It’s been going strong since launch though, and I don’t notice any slowdowns compared to apps that use the (expensive) API.
Updates
Each “update” just makes this app worse and worse every time. Now you can’t even use it without following the hydra sub. Absolute garbage of an app.
Picture in Picture
App is good but the Picture in Picture feature stopped working. Please add it back
Bricked asking to join sub
For a while I used Apollo side loaded, but as with side loading it was an absolute pain trying to remember to renew the app and everything… Now using hydra it’s very *ok*… It has a lot of problems and little to no polish. It does work and it is probably the best/closest contender for Apollo alternatives but it has a ton of missing mini-features and still has problems loading some content (Although side-loaded Apollo had issue with certain content to). Ironically, the app got an update? Which completely bricks the app due to a pop-up saying to join the r/hydraclient subreddit with absolutely no way to remove it…
Silences all other audio
Great layout that reminds me of Slide and Apollo. However, the app will randomly silence background music when no videos or gifs are playing in the window. This is a minor annoyance but would’ve really cool if it’s eventually resolved.
Excellent
App
crashed
immediately. deleted.
Best Reddit app out there
After using the now defunct Apollo for Reddit app for many years, I’ve tried many different ones including the car crash Official app - which is awful! Only two have come close and overall this is the best one. Regular updates too. Sadly Reddit have made apps like this costly to support. I’d rather pay a one off fee but doesn’t work like that anymore.
Could be much better
Often misregisters touches when swiping and then freezes when trying to close out of windows. Also has substantial problems refreshing windows.
Good app
Works well but desperately needs a mute videos by default option.
Best Reddit option by far
Reminiscent of Apollo. Easy to navigate, intuitive. The ONLY thing it’s missing is that if you accidentally (or not) swipe from your feed back to list of subreddits and try to swipe back, the feed starts back over rather than from where you left off. But you can set it to hide posts you e already seen so it’s close. 5/5 app even without that feature.
Disappointed
Was a really good webpage app to bypass the Reddit api rules but with the paid features being incredibly stupid no point downloading this anymore. Another one bites the dust
So much better than the official app
It is such a relief to browse Reddit without constant ads. No more disappearing home/inbox/profile toolbar, no myopic home feed that only shows 2% of my subscribed subs. I could never get used to Apollo but I have quickly learnt to love using Hydra.
Can’t Login JSON Parse Error
Started not being able to login a few days ago, otherwise great app!
Like but makes phone overheat
This app has massive potential, although I find it’s one of a few apps that makes my IPhone 17 Pro start to overheat
God-send of an app!
I needed this app in my life so badly! Reddit app is absolute is infested with ads and privacy intruding trackers. After Apollo was forced to close, I found alternatives to the Reddit app by side-loading but it was never perfect and always buggy and had to re-login every time the app was closed. This is better than even the Apollo app for me. It’s been mostly bug-free but the app was released relatively recently so if you find a bug, just report it and move on. They do fix the bugs! I’ve noticed much less bugs than when the app first released. They’re doing a banger job!
Crashes all the time
Just not a polished product. Skip it.
Lots of potential for Apollo alternative
I’ve used this app on and off for a year or so now. It has a lot of similarities to Apollo. I’m sure the creator will tire of hearing it being compared to Apollo but the usability is very similar and that’s what people want. Great app!
It’s ok
Paid for premium, deleted the app less than a day later. It’s fine but not worth it over just using safari or something. Can’t clear data out of it, can’t have gestures duplicates, can’t delete gestures, political filters don’t work for pics, religion filters aren’t available. I’d rather keep not using Reddit entirely.
Well done app
Great alternative to the official reddit app. Would love to support the development, but I'm never going to pay for a subscription service to browse reddit. Would be happy to pay $10-15 up front, but SaaS is gross.
Constantly broken
Dont you love it when your reddit app takes 10 minutes to refresh a feed and logs you out every other day? Broken post and comment linking. Broken user profiles, weird AI integration.
Finally a worthy successor to Apollo
So happy I found this app. Sadly my favourite one, Apollo, is no longer with us, and the best alternative I found so far was Winston, but that requires manual side loading and refreshing bc the TestFlight is perpetually full. This is an app from the store that actually works well and feels nice to use. I think the addition of AI summaries is actually really nicely done, and I actually do use them for the comments often. Not yet 5 stars, because I do still miss a few features from Apollo, and I did have some crashes, so not 100% stable yet, but definitely worth the small subscription price if you use Reddit often!
Won’t let me comment anymore.
App was working fine for a while. Now I can’t make any comments or posts and I don’t think my account is banned because I have no notifications about a ban.
This is the one.
I’ve been searching for a new reddit browser since Apollo went dark. I’ve not been happy with the others, and kept jumping from one to another. Hydra is the one that made me stop the search. It’s got everything you need, and works just right. Hail Hydra!
Useless
Doesn’t load anything
In 2025 it’s the closest to Apollo you can get
I’ve been using Hydra for about two months, and while not perfect, the experience is very good. I fully recommend this for anyone fed up with the default Reddit client for mobile. Give it a try.
Search
Search is useless. It gives maybe 5-10 posts if you're lucky when it should have 50+.
Developer Support
Have gotten support directly from developer. We chatted several times about new bug until he found fix. Awesome.
Doesn’t work
Can’t sign in
