Works well on iPhone
Presents the magazine issues and articles in reader format, and even allows for exporting pdf versions. Of course, the content is stellar. The Nation is a beacon in the darkness.
Horrible app
This app is terrible. It makes the magazine unreadable. You can’t read an article without multiple pop ups getting in the way. I’m canceling my subscription
App is a bit clunky
The magazine tab in the app works great. You can export articles to Instapaper and there doesn’t seem to be any ads. The website tab with the more recent articles is a mess, however. iOS Subscriptions are not recognized and the ads are relentless. As long as you stick to the magazine part of the app you’ll be fine.
Unreadable
First off I’m a new subscriber yet it keeps wanting to charge me to read past issues. I message their support team eight times and have only received bot responses telling me to check the FAQ where there is no info about this issue. Secondly there are so many pop up and intrusive ads that’s it’s impossible to read the articles. I’m wondering if I should request a refund since I haven’t received my first physical magazine yet. And this organization asks for donations on top of all of it. Very disappointed and wondering why I’m paying for these headaches with zero support.
Interesting stories, terrible app
Video adds takeover the entire screen, buttons to navigate often do nothing (I usually just close and reopen the app to start over), and the search functionality is really bad.
Always Valued
I love the writing in The Nation. It’s forthright and engaging. I appreciate the clarity and unwillingness to accept what’s established opinion on a topic. Each new issue clears my mind and forces me to take a 360 degree view.
Unusable
The constant pop ups block out so much content. While trying to read something, the screen just jumps around because of all the ads. For a paid subscriber, this is a horrendous experience. I want to read what The Nation publishes, but it is frustrating beyond belief and I have stopped even trying to read this.
Real journalism
I’ve been a long time subscriber as well as backing with my dollars. The Nation has been a beacon of truth since I believe since 1865. For a democratic Republic to survive it is paramount that truth should always matter and The Nation is a good place to start in seeking Reason and Logic premises, to process through the mass media.
Ads ruin the experience
As many have expressed the ads are out of control. If I have a subscription the web version should not be overwhelmed by ads. The web version can’t even take my login from the app. It asks for me to login again.
Bothersome ads
I like that you can navigate either through the most recent magazine or the most recent articles. However, the number and placement of ads is overwhelming. I find the ads which pop out of the app in a separate window to be particularly bothersome. I would pay more to have fewer ads in this experience.
Perfect e-mag!
Excellent app that focuses on a magazine structure without the adds! Easy to navigate and read - I love how it’s not trying to mess everything up with adverts and focuses on the articles. All magazines should aspire to be like this!
Wow…terrible app.
Way, way too many ads and pop ups. I paid for a subscription to help support good journalism, but I can’t even read the articles without being endlessly hammered with distractions. Won’t buy another year, that’s for sure.
Needs a way to mark favorite articles
Overall good app, but lacks the basic functionality of bookmarking selected articles. Please add!
One of the least user-friendly news apps I’ve seen
I’m a proud Nation subscriber, but I can barely read it anymore. The app is incredibly glitchy and the ads are completely out of control. You cannot get through half an article without pop-up’s and a self-destructive crash. I’ve stopped recommending it to people because it really is just impossible to consume anymore. I really hope the Nation can soon prioritize upgrading its app to be half decent — with a bare minimum of readability.
Content good, apple app integration bad
The nation’s journalism has gotten even better recently so I would love to subscribe and read consistently… but I kinda thought if I bought a digital sub through the app using Apple account that the app would keep me logged in but no such luck. And since I wanted to avoid spam I used the fake email thing that Apple offers through the App Store and now I can’t get my login info so basically I should have just lit some money on fire
Love it but can we book mark please
Love the digital version on my iPad but can we book mark amd highlight please? I have that ability with any kindle book. When I open the digital version of the nation it does not reopen in the month of publication or the most recent article I was reading. Am I expected to keep a written journal of bookmarks? I consider the nation to be one of, if not the best of honest views of contemporary politics. The articles are terrific, why not upgrade and improve the usefulness of your digital subscription. Both Amazon kindle and Apple Books both provide these features, and Apple text to speech allows the text to be selected and read to users. These features provide incentives much needed in the world of online publications. D. Steven Ledingham
Required to share data; can’t read due to ads
This app is an absolutely terrible experience. Static ads are embedded in the articles. Video ads are embedded in the articles. Video ads pop up on top of the articles, and start auto playing even though I have autoplay turned off. As a subscriber, I resent having to see any ads in the first place — but to pay good money and then not be able to read because of all the ads is ridiculous. Canceling my subscription and deleting the app.
ads and tech issues everywhere!!
With a paid subscription, my expectations were that there would be no ads that popped up while reading articles, and yet it happens every time! I pull up a news story and an ad for a puzzle game overtakes the whole screen. Whenever I temporarily move off the Nation app, (usually to play music or to check notifications) it resets completely to the home screen and I have to scroll back to find the article I attempted to read. It’s such a shame because I heard so many good things about this publication, but the technical issues and overblown ads (even with a paid subscription) are limiting my ability to read the articles on this app!

the journalism is amazing but it’s super hard to login and when i eventually logged it, it didn’t recognize my subscription and keeps asking me to subscribe again

Invasive App Permission?
The Apps Permissions feel too invasive…
Content excellent but app makes it unreadable.
I concur with others that, although I love The Nation and its insightful journalism, the intrusive pop up ads make reading any article less than an enjoyable experience. I get that the subscription price is a bargain, and the publisher needs to rely on advertising revenue to make up the gap. However, something needs to be done to make the app more stable and not simply a platform to draw unsuspecting readers into watching a video ad. I am seriously considering unsubscribing. That would be lost revenue and a loss for me. Please do something about this app.
Terrible app for a great magazine
Boy do I wish this app were good. I primarily read news on my phone, and I would read The Nation daily if I didn’t have to contend with an impossible and ugly interface that keeps kicking me out of each article I’m reading, requires I log back in continually, shows me many ads (as a subscriber!) and is just genuinely unwieldy. If anyone is listening please make a totally new app your top priority! (The best magazine app interfaces, fwiw, are The New Yorker and The Atlantic, even though the latter has outdated politics)

Why are there more ads after subscribing? I can't even read an article without the app trying to get me to accidentally click on some ad. Fix this
Ads make for a frustrating experience
The app runs like a poorly designed website, with ads popping up or videos autoplaying, causing the page to snap to the top or disappear behind the player. It’s worse than a website, in fact, because at least a browser has a Reader mode. As a paid subscriber, I expect a less disruptive experience with less intrusive advertising. But I guess even The Nation is subject to the need to squeeze every penny out of its online presentation. Or maybe this is a clever ploy to get people to read the print version, where the ads can’t force themselves in front of the articles.
Confusing and inconsistent links
Hard to keep in the app when ads pop up and merely grazing the link tips me out of the app. The ads are distracting and often bizarrely unrelated to The Nation’s and my demographic so I’m not sure why they are paying for space (even though I don’t click on ads anyway). Also, the app assumes I’m not subscribed and it’s easier to go down that route than to log in which annoying. Lastly, hard to track particular authors like Mystal and to search for key phrases. No worse than The NY Times app where I go to Google to do the search, too.
Publication is Great; the App is Pants
The publication is great but let down by the lack of usability within the App. Any successful search takes you to the article but does not then have any link to the issue. In order to find an issue you have to continually swipe through reams of front covers and there doesn’t seem to be any way of enhancing or defining search. For instance my search for April 2018 produced an article from August 2018. Well, suppose I should have been pleased it got the right year! Basically, the App is pants.

One of the best built apps available to read a magazine. But it crashes every time when my iPad is not connected to the Internet. Can you fix it ?
Terrible App
I am a subscriber and this is making me consider canceling my subscription. Flashing ads load over and over. I cannot access stories and it keeps prompting me to log in.
Can't download last two editions :(
When it works, this app is as great as the content. However, the last two editions will not download to my iPad. Both just say "starting" next to them. Fix the problem and this app is a five star app.
