Amazing app. Updating me on everything that’s happened and more. Provides topics for everyone’s interests
Scammy premium pricing
The subscription had an in-app “on sale” price of $6.99 per month. When it went through authorisation it changed to $24.99. I can see from my subscriptions that it appears to have an ongoing price of $24.99. In-app sale price was a lie. Now I am trying to cancel from the app and it will not allow any option other than to continue at $5.99. Very scammy. Also I didn’t realise the premium content would be weird right-wing stuff, I expected unbiased reporting. It’s truly bizarre.
Update needs modification
On the previous version any picture could be viewed and expanded with your two fingers on the screen as is normal with all smartphones. This ability has gone, can you please change the settings for photos. Also there is way too much negativity in the stories lately. Rapes, murders, etc. Bad enough in NZ stories but a lot of the headlines are world stories, put some more feel good, human achievements etc.
Always a valuable source.
Ian Keeps me in touch with home and family.
Worst app ever
Latest version is not user friendly. It’s not set up logically to find stories. The stories look a mess , you can see what is a headline and what’s not. Team it’s terrible.
Sub
I only read what is free as I can’t afford to pay for subscription. Thanks
Recent changes
I used to enjoy your App but the most recent updates leave readers frustrated about the features that used to be there. Please bring back article to article swiping, good organisation of pieces. As a premium subscriber I’d like just those basics!
Latest update requires PadOS 16.
So it doesn’t work on my older iPad. And the older app has been removed. So now I use my browser as a workaround.
Good app
Nice, I hope it will be free for all the news.
Nothing but premium and never up to date with the latest
For what is supposed to be a news app, there’s surprisingly little actual news. It feels that the majority of articles are behind a paywall and the articles that you can read are often outdated, poorly written or not about anything relevant.
Paywalls
Good app but too many paywalls I do expect to share some articles with friends Also the nature of articles paywalled gives rise to some suspicion they are politically motivated
Annoying you can no longer swipe from one article to the next
Have to click in, and back, and then in to next article- hard going
Notifications
New app is a great refresh, but you just can never get notifications right. So many push notifications of headlines, and the story is nowhere to be found on the app. This didn’t happen on old app so frustrating!
When I travel I can keep up with New Zealand AND International News
To be a useful productive citizen of New Zealand till your last breath to need to keep up with National current events To be a useful productive citizen of the World you need to keep up with International current events. I get Herald Newspaper delivery at my home at the foothills of Mount Eden (Maungawhau) The NZ Herald mobile app gives me delivery of the news of Aotearoa, New Zealand and International News when I am travelling with purpose. Have you even tried to use the app
Fix the page sizing issue with ads on iPhone And the popups are not going away. Latest iPhone and software
Ok
It’s fine
A backwards step
Version 8 of the App gives it a feel more like social media than news. Almost endless scrolling & advertising. If all articles had dates they were published then we would be able to work out what’s new & what’s not. I won’t be renewing my Premium subscription without improvements.
M’eh
Latest update is a step backwards - you used to have the different sections along the top of the screen so you could easily select which section you wanted to go to. Now you have to go to another screen to select which section you want to- not a huge problem but a step backwards from what was available
NZ Herald
I found your news to be better than other avenues. Your news on almost all countries is way ahead of others. Your reported is way better and way ahead of Australian news media. I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to your updates.
New is NOT better
After months of trial and waiting I have concluded that the Navigation and readability of articles on this App are so laced with advertising, videos & photos irrelevant to the article, unclear limits on articles and advertisements, that I am abandoning using it in favour of other superior news sources that are far easier to navigate and read. FAIL . Happy to pay for well written news articles without all the fuzz.
Writing letters to the editor or commenting on opinion pieces online
Overall the website is good. Easy to navigated but it does not allow online comment to opinion pieces which is frustrating. Also broaden the overseas news sources. Why only use material from the NYT or Washington Post? Both are left leaning and have had to issue major retractions and corrections on big stories. Add content from the Wall Street Journal for more balanced content. The coverage of the Govt’s response to Covid has been fawning and lacking independent analysis. By any objective measure keeping kiwis out and locking down Auckland for protracted periods is an economic and social disaster. Yet the newspaper refuses to really spell out these failings.
Why has this gone backwards?
I’m puzzled by the new app, as in many respects it’s inferior to the old. It doesn’t refresh automatically anymore, the ability to swipe between articles is gone, and I’m getting lots of ads in my premium subscription. The previous app was far superior to Stuff’s news app; the new app is not.
Subscription
I miss when it use to be free!!!
The New Zealand Hearld
the New Zealand Herald is brilliant news paper it’s a great way to catch up with what’s going on around the world ….the NEW ZEALAND HERALD is my favourite publication in the whole WORLD
New App Sucks
The App wasn’t great but the update has completely stuffed the layout and navigation of the site! And are you subjected to ads even if you pay for the subscription. All in all poor quality App, poor quality journalism and I am fed up of being conned into paying for Viva and other content that should already be included. I am about to move overseas so I will be glad to get rid of this subscription.
Feedback
Good App but it won’t allow me to comment on articles. Tried numerous times without success
Horrible Update
The new version of the NZ Herald app is awful. Way too much white space and massive banner ads. The previous version was actually quite good. I would prefer to go back to the old version.
Too many “premium” articles
In this day and age NZH downy have a monopoly on news and op pieces. Too many paid articles … off putting
Nz
I like reading this paper it’s up to date stories I live on the Gold Coast and read it every morning
Not supported
Just went to read my morning Hearld on my iPad..it said to update.. so I tied…said no longer supported!!!! My iPad is not that old…please give me the option to load an older version so I can read my Hearld..thank you
Apps good pity about the rampant political bias
The NZH app works well… pity about the mostly biased political journalism championed by the NZH political editor and journalists.
Where’s the swipe?
Why is it no longer possible to swipe through the articles? This limitation has significantly reduced the value of the app to me and subsequently, I’m not using the app anywhere near as much as previous
Premium
Hi I find your headlines which run together confusing. Some captions should not be with the pictures as they go against each other and appear to void the news items - show as being thoughtless. Have only come across ‘new podcast’ and it’s really good. Go the Herald 2025 - the world is being shaken up! Always liked the NZ Herald. Section called Premium that you can only fully read if you are a subscriber. Do young people read the Herald, teenagers, those in their 20s…? When articles relate to well-being/mental health that can help people, don’t section those articles off so they cannot be read in full. It may just be the link needed for some to take a moment to reconnect and change their mind to look forward to a longer path in life… hopefully a brighter/better path Thank you
Nz Herald mobile App
I love keeping up with the headlines
2026 App update big fail
Really bad update. Reading the morning news is no longer enjoyable with this inadequate version - not worth the money.
David shackell
Living brisbane for 18 years, still like to hear what is happening back home
Bad to worse
Latest app update is full of ads, hard to navigate and mostly premium articles with click bait thrown in for good measure. Used to be a good news source.
Sudoku
Since the update this morning the ‘ pencil’ feature has to be turned on for each square and turned off the put in the answer. This doesn’t work properly. Please fix.
Great app
Great content especially the rugby opinions.
June 2026 revamped app needs work
I opened a BusinessDesk story - then could not go back to the main body of the app. Momentum scrolling is not working in Death Notices
What I like about the NZ Herald
Keeps me up to date with current affairs. Provides good “brain food” by way of puzzles etc., Only slightly biased politically. Has some interesting / amusing trivia. Can have “holiday breaks” and not be charged for them. Delivered to my door daily. In the event delivery is missed there is prompt redelivery by just a phone call. — feel proud - you guys are providing a most useful, informative service - even if I do not agree with it wholly.
Award winning news site?
There is a lack of fact checking and in depth reporting. The reporting is sometimes more parochial. There are a few good reporters that give good balanced analyses, but they’re few and far between. A lot of reports seem to end suddenly and half-done leaving a lot of unanswered questions. Recent reporting about the protests and window smashing at Winston Peters’ house for example, had claims that Chloe Swarbrick encouraged this action, however there was no balance put as to whether she really did play a part in it - where’s the fairness and fact checking? Or are you satisfied being a he-said she-said bulletin and just lighting more fires? One article was embedded with a photo of Judith Collins. It was a link to an unrelated article so why have it right in the middle of the item I’m trying to read? It’s a sloppy layout and just click-baiting. There’s very poor reporting on major global political events. I go to BBC, Australian ABC, the Guardian, Reuters amongst others to get real news. The Herald is fine for NZ news like incidents, who died, lots of sports but can’t be relied on for follow up. There is a dearth of good nz news sites especially with the tv news being eroded and it just adds to the dumbing down of our population.
NZ herald
Tells you how good it is then takes far too long to load.
Away from NZ
We live in Australia now but love to catch up with NZ news every day. Thank you for this brilliant App
New app awful
Terrible update. No swiping, can’t zoom In on photos, layout poor. Old app was a vast improvement
Great Perspective
As an American who has traveled in New Zealand several times, I have loved the global perspective that Kiwis have. The Herald allows me to see views of politics in the USA, as well as world events, in a different light. I read it daily. I also enjoy the travel section and other areas.
Nz herald
The amount of articles of note have reduced so much I’m not sure if it’s worth getting anymore. Also I liked the sport when it could be divided into Rugby soccer cricket etc , not all mixed in. I am thinking of finishing subscription- nothing in it. Since Covid
Payed Content
I find it a bit annoying how I have to pay for some of the content I want to read. I don’t live in Aotearoa anymore, but love to keep in the know about things happening back home. This is the only reason I’ve given a 3 out of 5
