By far the best but

Best looking boards, the tutor and the stats it shares are great. Vs ai is the best i tried but at highest dificulty its the same bs as all other apps. When it wants it just rolls a lit fatality and u see it comming a mile away. It does have the option for u to roll manual dice which is great. The part that needs more improvement is multiplayer and ranking system

Better than some

I have played many different ones, the issue I have is the AI ‘random’ dice. It is not in favour of the player or the AI just that it generates ridiculous dice patterns. Eg I had the same dice as the AI for 6 throws or I had 4x dbl 3 and the Ai had 6x dbl 3 in the same game. It almost always generates highly improbable sequences that just don’t happen with real dice. You can say that all outcomes have the same probability but with real dice you dont throw dbl1,dbl2,dbl3,dbl4 in a row. Statistically this is almost never going to happen. So it is frustrating to play.

Too many doubles in favour of the computer

I have played this game for years now and generally love it. However, the computer throws so many doubles, sometimes 3 on a row, enabling its counters to move freely around the board. The odds of so many doubles for one player are unrealistic. When this happens I just abandon the match in frustration and that happens A LOT. Reduce the number of doubles to a realistic number and you will give the player a much better experience.

Rigged Dice

I was hoping this was going to be a good app that used genuine random dice rolls…but it’s not. The bot will try to make the game challenging - sometimes in your favor. I can call the rolls the bot will get. Also, sometimes when you get the bot cornered, it will give you the one roll that exposes your checkers. The game is fun but definitely not fair. I received your response to my review. That’s a ridiculous response. Im not saying the dice do not change during the game. What I’m saying is the app looks at the scenario of the placement of the checkers and adjusts the dice results to what the game desires. Of course if I played the game again and manually had the dice roll what was done in the previous game the outcome would be the same. To think the results would be different is insane! My point is the game has logic that rigs the dice roll to be what the programmer has predetermined. If they want the game to be more “exciting”, they will have the dice roll what one entity needs to keep the game exciting. What a pitiful response you guys provided. You didn’t address the main issue I mentioned. So, here is the question, does your app have code that looks at the position of the checkers to determine the dice rolls or is the roll absolutely random? I’m interested to hear your reply…..

Decent - but….

So I play this game often, and over many years. I should have already switched. But I haven’t. Why? laziness and convenience. However I’m going to download another version? My reason? The app will go on incredibly impossible runs over and over again to the users detriment. The probabilities simply aren’t accurate. Example: often I’ll take a safe risk after calculating probabilities; i.e., “this is a safe move and it shouldn’t backfire, as the only way this hurts me is if the computer hits a 1 and a 6 on their next roll (1/18 chance).”… only to see that roll happen on the apps next roll, when it would help the app the most. “Ok, sure that happens sometimes”, I think to myself.. My next roll I need an outcome that should have a 50% (or more) hit rate and miss it. Again and again, while the app seems to land the perfect needed roll on its next 5 turns. It wouldn’t be a big deal if it wasn’t happening time and time again, making it obvious that the app seems to have an “auto screw-you” mode enabled; which legitimately just becomes anger inducing. Surely there are more realistic versions than this. If this is really how probabilities worked, casinos would go broke.

Fixed Big Time

You don’t need Penn & Teller to let you know how a game is rigged. The patterns are obvious, especially the frequent “Great Escapes”, and end-game turnarounds. My favourite though is when the computer rolls two dice that correspond to both possible places for a blot to occur. Or when you roll 15+ times without getting a four on greater on one die. I notice network play is noticeably random, no problem. What I see happening is the computer is a poor player and too often would not win without a dramatic turnaround two rolls before reaching home, and these games are way too frequent. I don’t know and I don’t care how they fix the list of rolls retroactively — but it is probably much less trouble than designing game skills

Love this — one minor issue

I’ve played a ton of backgammon apps and this one is by far the favorite. No subscription. Great AI. Fast and easy to use UI. My only tiny issue is that the description of the various luck factors is not accurate. In this app, "Quite Lucky" is less lucky than "Lucky." That’s misleading. It should be "Slightly Lucky" as the first bracket of luck, then "Lucky", "Very Lucky" etc.

I don’t care what the makers say, that you can prove that it is not fixed, but this game HAS to be rigged. The opponent ALWAYS GETS the roll it needs to capture. It gets doubles over and over again, and I get nothing. There is no way this is random.

An excellent BG app

I've tried many BG apps, and without adding BGblitz side of things it's good, and worth the money. So take the punt. However, spend a little more and get all the BGblitz additions and it transforms into a top game - if only to find out is your opponent WAS lucky! It also increases the difficulty and rates your game play which helps. The tutor is also good (although I wish I could turn it's 'ding' off and retain the game's other sounds) and you can see how your moves rate. (Although I've discovered it's a thin line between risk and reward) that said, the tutor has improved my play. It short, it offers a true and fair game - which makes it entertaining and challenging.

CHEATS!

Play thousands of games and you’ll see a pattern of the computer constantly rolling doubles and always getting the impossible roll to kill your game. After you have it pinned and there’s only one combination that could work, miraculously it gets it. That is followed, more often than not by keeping the player from getting any realistic rolls until it wipes you out. I don’t care how great my opponent is, odds are odds and constant one sided winning dice rolls for 80, 100 games all virtually in a row, do not happen in reason life.

Ruined by Bogus Rolls

It’s a shame the beautiful interface and intuitive gameplay are ruined by non-random rolls favoring the “computer”. Things that happen with ridiculous frequency: - Computer immediately rolls the correct combo to hit your blot. - Computer rolls doubles when coming in from the bar. - As soon as the game turns into a race, the computer rolls double sixes - 1-2 rolls - for both players, but typically when it helps the computer to cover To demonstrate this, play a few matches with the computer rolling, then a few with manual dice rolls. The character of the matches will be completely different.

No Nonsense Gem!

We tried several backgammon apps before finding this gem. Most of the others had annoying ads you had to sit through or unnecessary and distracting glitz. My wife and I use this to play face-to-face at a table. The clearly deliberate effort the developer made to create an easily playable backgammon game and nothing more is truly appreciated. We really like the optional settings for movement style and the handful of reasonable gameplay options. It allows us to tweak it so the controls work the way we prefer. We also like the ability to have the game play out the last many moves itself once the outcome is pretty much decided except the last few moves to clear the board. I was a career game developer and I find myself admiring what this developer has accomplished. Well done!

Good game w some quirks

I like this app and have played hundreds of games, primarily because it providers a player rating and its AI helps me improve. That said, there are some… quirks. For example, I can’t get over the number of times the app rolls doubles to hit my single blot and send it to the bar. This literally never happens when I roll. I’ve read enough review responses from the developer to know his typical replies and I don’t dispute them. But man these quirks happen a lot: out of four rolls in my most recent game, the app rolled double ones twice (!) to hit my only open blots.

Unconvinced the rolls are random

I think this game consistently rolls the only possible combination for the best outcome for it to win. I have seen multiple (at least 6) games in a row where my beginning roll is a 2 and 1 or something similar. The point being the odds do not support that. It consistently rolls higher combination, I can go almost an entire game without a 6.

Rigged?

I love this game but I can’t help but feel it is somehow rigged. The computer seems to throw exactly it needs to go out or to land on me. It’s uncanny how often, the computer rolls doubles exactly when needed or the exact count each time in order to land on me. Happens way too often! UPDATE: I appreciate the response; in reality, I realize it’s not rigged…just very frustrating. Thanks. 2nd Update: I have probably played dozens of games with this app and maybe “rigged” is not the correct word but I fund it uncanny that the computer can roll exactly the right number it needs to put checkers in home, the exact number always needed to land on my checker and the uncanny number of doubles the computer rolls, especially when the opponent is in their home court…definitely giving the opponent the advantage. It happens way too often. I am going to find another game to play with the computer and see if I get the same results. Thanks.

Great but unfair

As per other reviews the computer definitely gets better dice rolls. I play the whole time and I’ve only seen the computer have the first roll, it’s always me for some reason. Secondly it’s started to glitch. For example it left one of my pieces off the board when setting up and I couldn’t move it. But when I tried to take my pieces off it wouldn’t let me because not all my pieces were home (but I couldn’t touch that piece). I know they say they have a button to change the dice sequence and I often press that but that doesn’t mean the computer can’t use a way of working out the future moves and the best possible dice. I beat the computer a lot more with a manual dice.

If they either fix the roll of the dice so it isn’t bias to the computer or gave you the option to roll real dice at home and input the results for your roll and the computer’s roll. After all you aren’t going to cheat because you would only be cheating yourself. The computer at present wins the start far too often. The computer gets far too many doubles compared to the user. The computer gets far too many rolls that it exactly needs compared to the user. I do win occasionally but it is frustrating. The only good part of the game is analyzing the computers strategy. Dice roll

I just got this app based upon the developer insisting the dice rolls were fair, despite critics saying otherwise. Regardless of what the developer argues, it’s clear that the rolls favor the computer. Nearly 85% of the first rolls are won by the computer and doubles are rolled 4 times as often by the computer. Also the total value of each roll is much higher by the computer, allowing greater mobility of the computers’ checkers. It’s very frustrating.

Advanced Level Unreasonable

Advanced level unreasonably difficult in new version. Odds are definitely not fair. I have stopped playing. The board is tilted. Not fun. I just tried the “casual” mode. The board is still tilted in favour of the computer. Far too difficult to enjoy. Now the developer has asked me to Google “does your bot cheat”. I am insulted. I have played this game hundreds of times. I actually keep a log of my scores. My average over every 100 games has always been at least a .600 winning percentage. But with the first 200 games with this new version, it is less than .500. How do you explain that? The numbers don’t lie. This new version cheats IMO. Updated review. While I consistently beat the game at advanced level at a rate of 60% on average, the board still seems tilted in the following scenarios. One when I have open men in the home quadrant, the opponent hits them almost all the time. Second when the opponent has open men in the home quadrant, I almost never hit them. Fix these issues and I will give it 5 stars.

Every game starts with a short note warning you that it appears the game is cheating by playing with loaded dice..... BECAUSE IT IS!!!! This game will definitley challenge your skills as a player as you try to plan different strategies, but no matter which strategy you play, the dice almost ALWAYS work in the game's favour. Yes you will win games, but the game will frustrate you when it constantly pins you deep with many rolls to get back in, and when you think you have it pinned deep, it ALWAYS finds a way out within a couple of rolls.
