Great version

Discovered recently you can look at future dice rolls for either player. Interesting but don’t use it. The one thing I’d LOVE is a tutorial mode. Telling me when there’s a better move - and maybe why. Even without it’s a great way to learn how to play.

Strange changes in the latest update

I’ve been playing this app for many years and thoroughly enjoy it. I used to play, and win 60% in Hard mode, now all has changed, now i very rarely win even in Easy mode. Is there a way to change the random generator? Still love the app though

Beware

This game punishes players for an aggressive, non-traditional style of play. If you take occasional chances by leaving pieces open that require a combination of “both” dice to get you, it will do just that 80% of the time, even if two “specific” numbers are required to do that, such as a 6 & 1, or 2 & 5! This is not random chance!

Not a BAD AI backgammon game

Well, it still cheats. Yes I have read the statistics, but I also got a set of physical dice and rolled the move for each player. With the manual tools, the win rate between the human and the AI is about 50/50. Without the manual rolls, AI wins all the time, having exactly the needed rolls at exactly the correct time. The interface is fabulous, the piece movement is great. You can’t blame the AI for wanting to win and having a way to make it occur!

Cheats when coming back in

I have played this app thousands and thousands of times. It has an excellent interface, the best, and its general is excellent. But make no mistake, it absolutely cheats. How? When you are knocked out and waiting to get back in, even if there are 4 or 5 points available for you to land, 80% of the time you WILL NOT get back on. The dice will land on the blocked points, often for multiple turns. Turn it round - when the computer is on the bar, 80% of the time it will get back in FIRST THROW, even if there are only 2 places open. Take my word for it.

Questionable intelligence

Beautifully constructed game, but the higher competitive levels are harder to beat (playing against the app) only because the app gets 4 out of 5 of the rolls it needs every time it gets an advantage, and competitor rolls go to 1s , 2s and 3s. In these situations, the app gets high doubles in 3 of 5 rolls. There's something wrong with higher level play modes. Update: I’ve continued to play this game despite the obvious advantages it gives itself when needed and the obvious useless rolls it grants its opponent in similar situations (e.g., double 4s, 5s, and 3s when a 3 roll is needed), but I’m reclassifying the game’s methods a flat out cheating.

Chuckle maybe but Definitely Frustrating

Just some observations, I’ve been playing backgammon for far too long, 40 years, and this app for too long as well, possibly 10 years or when it was released. Whilst I’d agree that app doesn’t “cheat” it does have an incredible hit rate which I suspect is based upon the computer working out how I play. It’s quite remarkable that the computer manages to be given the right roll no matter how improbable and I’ve witnessed some that have been truly breathtaking but the consistency of achieving these rolls is pretty high. I say this as I’m now playing at Hard level and initially I have been winning, the last match was 18/8, but it does seem to be increasing it’s wins unless I do a move that makes no sense. It’s also hardwired to take pretty much at any cost: 2 blots on it’s home board? and for three rolls I couldn’t hit one or get off the bar. I accept that it can’t see or use the next 100 rolls, I can’t help but think it would be fairer to have no prepared rolls? Generating one at a time would surely be mirror a normal game? A recent game I had three 1/2 rolls in a row and before that four 4/5 in a row, these aren’t that often but they’re not isolated. I’m also not sure on the odds of consistently the correct dice roll in make or break situations is but the computer manages to, I say this not out of paranoia but from experience. Probably one of the better backgammon apps but as with most “intelligent” computers it works out how to win unless you play randomly that defeats the purpose of the game. It’s no substitute for a real player but useful so long as you don’t let paranoia cloud your thoughts except in a game just now whilst bearing off the computer “rolls” 3 double fives, a two/four and another double five, if anyone knows the odds of rolling four double fives in five rolls I’d seriously like to hear from them.

The Developer has some explaining to do!

How do you get doubles six times in a row? How do you get three double 5 in 4 roles? The odds are not normal comparing to real life! The doubles come in a streak! The program for rolls needs to be modified to simulate real world dice odds! I have been playing backgammon for over 40 years and have never seen the kind of dice roles that this App gives a player!

Put Rolls in LLM

Love the interface, love the feel, and easy to get lured into. But, then you play and impossible rolls just seem to happen over and over in the most uncanny ways. I started dropping rolls into ChatGPT to see the odds. 3 doubles in a row? No problem for the AI - with less than a .5% chance. In a tight race with all pieces past each other? No problem for the AI as I roll 5 under 5 combined rolls in a row. A 0.165% event. This kind of stuff happens consistently in this game. Love it, but had to delete it as I’ve never seen the luckiest human get those rolls. And so consistently when needed the most.

Enjoy the game but. . .

. . .game is slanted to the white. I can be WAY ahead. Then I get knocked off, and the white gets all the around, and I can’t get out until the white is bearing off. I have also tested a theory. I let the computer decide EVERY MOVE, and WAALAA, I won way more than I lost. The algorithms are definitely skewed. Another theory I noticed was if white is ahead, they get doubles, and black gets ones and twos. I play because I love the game, but when it is lopsided, I x out of it, hoping it will reset.

— RodSMFunk

★★★★☆ Australia · v6.3.9 · 18 Jun 2020

good but sort of cheats

the dev contacted me, i have already read his proofs - which he always defers to instead of answering the actual question you ask. i have seen amazing rolls in my life. i have yet to see a player open with one and two and make the same obvious move anyone would across 100s of games - and then change that move only once when they magically knew their next roll would suit the varied opening play they chose. i have yet to play a game with a human in 40yrs, where i know what their next roll is before it happens. not just once but 100s of times accurately. because it is so obvious. the developer is full of it - and i could maybe believe him, except when i roll manual dice the computer loses its magical future knowledge of the rolls. i call the developer out as a liar and i am happy to be proved otherwise in only one way - if the developer is willing to explain the type of neural network model implemented, if/how it learns over time as you play, if it is networked and what biases and data points it is using. one of the potential problems is that the computer and player dice are generated by the same random seed. that is a false simulation. if the neural network is assessing dice sequences and is as i am, able to detect the bleedingly obvious and non random order of rolls, then it has a serious advantage because it is able to adjust to the biases over vast sets of data better than a human this may not be a bad thing, this may make for an incredible AI. The developer in this case needs to explain the AI instead of just saying “look at the roll generator”. Any IT fool knows computers do not generate true random and matched to neural network - the AI will easily be able to determine what is coming up from either set of dice - because of the same not truly random sequence. —— the developer claims the AI does not cheat and i agree. The dice rolls are the problem and it is hard to explain - however after 500 games against expert with a 30% win rate - all i can say is either computers are sentient and influence rolls in their favour or the dev is running a pre scan over the rolls to select “hard games to win”. the setups that happen are beyond belief. it is a total piss take. i can literally pre guess what the computer is going to roll next, it is that obvious of a setup. I am often laughing at how obvious it is. sure the AI is damn good. which is great. i have now been playing it with manual rolled dice and no cheating. yeah it beats me and i beat it and that is fine - it is a good opponent and the way it plays is still really good - surprise surprise though the totally obvious eye roll worthy setups have quite simply stopped and the computer can’t make use of them. nawww. unfortunately the game does not isolate manual rolls in stats otherwise i would happily play another 500 games manually rolled and compare to prove it. so be careful playing on expert, it damages your game because to win you learn to make stupid moves to break the blatantly obvious setup you are in. such moves will not work with a human unless they too have carefully pre selected a dice sequence where you have little chance of winning because every roll is a setup with the exact roll required to stomp you coming next. very cleverly designed, not clever enough to conceal the truth. and yes i enjoy when i lose fairly to this AI.

Avoid - this is not a good App

Whilst the App is technically ok (i.e. it won’t crash) the programming relies on fixing the die rolls to beat you when you play against the App. Some reviewers (I don’t know how authentic they are) will try to convince you that the die rolls are random. They are not for the higher levels. Increasingly biased die rolls are used as a pretence for the App having incrementally better skill. Good and not-so-good

I have played thousands of games of backgammon on this app. There’s no advertising (good) and for the most part, the games are challenging and fun. The bad is that the app gives itself perfect rolls repeatedly, so expect to lose frequently. There’s no element of luck for the computer, but I suppose this is one way to get people to keep playing—if you won all the time, what would be the point? I plan to keep the app, which is why I gave it 3 stars. But if you are a highly competitive person (I am not), you might find this app frustrating.
