Amazing app
Best way for solo travelers to meet new people
Useless App
The latest update to this app is pure garbage. You click on a property to view it and there is no back button! You literally have to reboot your device to look at a different property. Insane. I used to love this app. I deleted it and will just use the website.
Mostly okay, but…
I have used Hostelworld for about three weeks, while I was in Iceland. While it functioned as expected and was useful, now that I am no longer traveling, I am still receiving notifications from the app. I want to turn them off, because I get one or more a day and I don’t want to receive any. After a fair amount of research, I still haven’t been able to do this. So prepare yourself; the app can and will hassle you forever.
Customer service/rebooking is impossible
The app will automatically select dates for a random date when refreshed. Once the booking is made, they make it impossible to change. Even if you notice within minutes after booking. Really frustrating when just going back to look at options, the dates automatically change. It’s a money grab and they know it.
Sign in screen is broken
It’s impossible to sign in
love it
easy trips
Es una cuna de estafas
Si cancelas a un minuto de la reserva no te devuelven nada…. hay muchos lugares que no existen
Still best hostel hub
I’ve used Hostelworld religiously since 2013. Four stars because they now include non hostels that aren’t vetted and that’s not what this platform is best used as.
App and website buggy
It’s changed my date of birth and when I try and edit it on the website or app I just keep getting an error!
Always Crashing
It serves a good purpose but it’s always crashing. Or when I’m checking into a hostel to show my reservation, the app never opens. It’s very frustrating.
Best app for solo travelers hands down
Using this app you’ll never be or feel alone as long as you’re using it
Horrible app
There is no customer service at all
Currency conversion rate
It would be nice to know what conversion rate you’re using at the time of the transaction, so there’s no surprises. Thank you.
Put great features behind a paywall
I can no longer access the traveller chat, which was an innovative feature this app had. This is because they’ve rolled out their social pass whereby you can access the chat without having a booking if you pay. Otherwise it tells you that you can make a booking to access the chat. The issue with this is I have 2 bookings right now and it still won’t let me access the chat. So either this is a bug due to carelessness or they’ve just put a great feature behind a paywall.
Adding bookings
I booked a few hostels before actually downloading the app. I booked it through their website instead of the app though. I wish they added a feature where they allowed us to put in our booking code and add that booking to the app so I could have all of my bookings in one spot instead of having to search through months of emails.
USE THIS
This app is one of the best ways to enter the backpacking community all over the world when you’re solo traveling. I can’t recommend enough
Poor functionality, worse customer support
I’ve been trying to cancel a booking for days and the live chat never has agents and directs you to submit a request. You get an automatic reply and the agent who eventually replies repeats the same thing, like they didn’t even read your request / issue. There is no support call center so emailing is the only option. I’ve been having this issue for days and now I’ve lost my free cancellation and have to pay 100% of the cost of my booking when I can’t make it to the reservation, all because their support is horrible and the app keeps crashing when I try to cancel my booking.
Martina
A bit slow the app, everything else is perfect
Hotel prices
This app was great once upon a time…. But now, hostel dorms are costing the same as a hotel room on this app. I imagine it’s because of the fees built into the pricing on the app…. But the entire POINT of a hostel is cheap accommodation. Not spending $70-$100 per night to share a room with 4 strangers. What used to be a wonderful & rich travel experience has been bought out by corporate greed and greed has no limits. Well, I’m certain that soon people won’t be paying these prices since backpackers usually want to save money and have cheap accommodation, especially when sharing a room with a bunch of people.
Great app, but very annoying
The app itself is fantastic, great way to meet up with people from other hostels in the same city you’re living in and they make it super easy. However they spam you with notifications constantly if you’re not staying at a hostel, there’s no way to specifically turn the promotional material off so I’ve ended up using booking.com more now unless I want to specifically meet up with people using hostel world.
Professional organizations
The breakfast is wonderful the space clean , friendly and peaceful. Love the open air kitchen and rooftop seating. This has been a wonderful experience. Had to make to some travel arrangements due to flight cancellations, and the front desk was a minimal and accommodated us, which is fantastic
App not functioning with latest version
I used to always love this app but the latest update keeps me stuck on the first hostal I check with no exit out. It’s so weird and frustrating. I never ever had this problem with previous versions. You also use to be able to check ratings by age and dates, but I don’t see that.
Cheap hostels
I wish the price shown had all the taxes and fees included. Still was cheap but after clicking to book, the taxes were 100% of the price, so the final price was double. Like I said, price was still cheap after taxes but it makes it harder to shop around.
I wish there was a way to view an area outside of the town you searched for
I wish I could zoom out of the map and find off the beaten places because right now you need to know either the town name or the hostel name to find them. It would be cool to be able to zoom around the entire map and find places you never heard of. I think it’s possible on android but not iPhone.
60 trips, 40 countries, 100 hostels & counting
I have traveled to so many countries and I am really an experience focused person. Having the ability to stay in a hostel has been the highlight of most of my trips. Hostel world makes it way easy to book, put a deposit and gives you some since of piece of mind. Especially being a single female traveler I get a lot of invites to travel for dates or seeking connections with people for the first time. Sometimes it can come with a lack of safety or unexpected unknown circumstances. In hostels their is always a sense of community. Eyes and ears are always around! Someone is always speaking English or willing to be parent with your bad translations. You make friends, family and sometimes just pass through and hear peoples stories and share your own. Hustling and the experience presented by hostelworld gives me safety and security and confidence being a solo woman of color, traveling to the unknown and navigating the world! Cheers!

This has come clutch for me through my world travels. Never failed me. It’s a lifestyle now.
Unethical ways of handling business
Have previously had a great experience with Hostelworld. However, my recent interaction with their platform has completely soured my initial, positive opinion of them. I booked a hotel where I wasn’t able to check-in due to specific terms and conditions. I rebooked with Hostelworld to another property in the same city. However, when requesting a refund for a hostel, that I did not even stay at (let alone checked in at), they denied the request several days later. This is absurd as when a service is not delivered upon, payment cannot be expected. However, they took their share of the cut (deposit), leaving the hostel itself without a single cent and me having to pay Hostelworld the deposit. I barely ever post reviews, but this predatory manner of doing business, is unethical and shameful, and therefore I must warn future users of the App. Furthermore, their “4.9”- rating with over 50K ratings here on App-store is likely inflated as the public opinion of Hostelworld on online forums, is far less positive. I suspect they report and take down negative reviews as this one. If not, you have been warned.
pretty good but 1 fatal flaw
it’s pretty good to find hostels and i love the meet section where you can meet other travellers in your hostel or city :) however, my only complaint is that notifications do NOT show up on my phone once someone replies to my message. some meetups never happen because of this. that’s what’s stopping this being 5 star
Lots of creepy guys
Main issue with the app is the amount of weirdos that constantly message you asking trying to arrange some sort of sugar daddy thing. Hostelworld needs to sort this out i just wanted to make friends to travel with and have not had a single normal person message me, only countless creeps. Other than that the app works fine i booked my hostel etc. But, they need to block inappropriate messages and disable accounts that send stuff like that.
Quality Has Decreased
Recently they have changed the app to automatically search for hotels as well, which kind of defeats the point of the app to some extent. It is frustrating to constantly go to filters to filter out the unnecessary 4 star hotels that are listed with the hostels.
My review( professional writer)
Tits!
Garbage app
They’re just trying to sell you something. They ignore all request to cancel account too. Scam
Good for finding hostels
It’d be better if you use: CAD or USD instead of just “$”. Otherwise It could be misleading when booking.
Used to be good
Used to be my go- to app and really liked it. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to book anything with them for the last 6 months as they don’t accept any of my debit cards. I thought it was a property issue, but it has happened every single time. Shame as it is a good app.
Currency
Your charging system is very confusing. Your site quotes me prices in CAD, you charge my credit card in EUR, and the property bills the rest in USD. It feels really convoluted.
Viajar hecho Facil
Todo en un solo lugar, excelente app que te conecta con tu hogar temporal.
Bugs
Can’t sign up or sign in. Major issue
Countries visited
This app is amazing, sometimes can be a bit slow but no complaints. My MAIN complaint is that when you are a guest on a stay, it doesn’t show up in your countries visited portion of your profile. So now it won’t say that I’ve been to Spain and Portugal.
Very inflexible for changing booking length
As an app it works well but twice I’ve attempted to shorten the booking by a night whilst already at the hostel (even for four nights Into the future), only to be told that it was impossible as the hostels themselves don’t handle bookings or refunds themselves. The appeal of travelling is flexibility and spontaneity and HostelWorld does not fit with this at all - I find Booking.com way easier to deal with and more flexible
APP IS SO GLITCHY
Plz update asap!!!! It’s so glitchy and everything takes such a long time to load and none of the buttons work please fix asap!
Clunky
It would be nice if you could change the default currency from Euro to …. well, anything really.
25% More than Booking Direct with Hostels
They overcharge by about 25% compared to booking direct with the hostels. I found this out after already booking about 3 weeks of hostels. I would understand a small service fee, but they charged 744 euros instead of 600 (the rate when booking direct through the hostel). 144 euros is an unreasonable service fee. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
Mostly great!
Good app, the groupchats are extremely annoying. Leaving them does not work
Bit naff
The app has a major flaw: you don’t get push notifications for replies. They have this chat feature to meet people etc but if someone replies to you, unless you open the app you don’t see it. Which is so stupid because you end up missing time sensitive replies - when solo travelling plans are made quickly / last minute etc. Also there’s an annoying bug where when typing, if you want to edit something you’re typing you have to delete the whole message back to the area you want to edit which is so annoying.
USE WISELY
A useful app to see what is available and to see which hostels are safe and reputable, however, their prices are often a good deal more expensive than what they actually are if you go to the hostel directly. They charge booking fees, and depending on the country prices can be nearly double e.g Argentina. Never pay through this app!
Great app
This app was very useful when i’m booking multiple hostels, gave me the best prices!
Worst company ever
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SCAM!! RUN!
Great App, but could use a change
Really user friendly app, but wish they have a map you could move around on and see hostels in different areas. Would help in more remote places
Bad app practices
Great for booking hostels and I like the chat feature but I think in a recent update as I didn’t have this problem before you can’t choose which notifications you get which is pretty basic stuff for an app settings. You have to completely disable all notifications if you don’t want multiple daily promos and ads via push notifications. I’ve confirmed this with the customer support team. Shame because I liked get relevant notifications about upcoming bookings and chat but have no interested in ads getting pushed into my notifications.
Well then
For as good as it is finding hostels, it’s not very good actually showing you your booking. I have booked many hostel stays now and they do not show up on the app. Still says I have been to zero countries and had no stays. So it works well enough until you have to amend a booking and then it’s pretty useless. Also slightly jarring it takes the deposit in euros but that might be a user error more than the app. I have had some wonderful stays through this app and the rating is good but it’s just annoying to stop be able to do the other stuff. And I am not the only person I know to have this issue
