Nice idea but unreliable
I love this idea. I was so excited by it. I’m on my 2nd notebook. But it is extremely unreliable. The pen doesn’t work half the time. Pages are lost. Very very disappointing.
Moleskin pen no longer supported
I have had the moleskin pen for years . I had to update my Notes and now informed that my pen is no longer supported. I have to buy a new pen to use my notebooks. My current pen is functioning fine. Why must I buy a new pen? And the new version pen is not available for purchase. True business inefficiency. The excuse I have received from Moleskin is that the previous pen is 10 years old. Be clear: App was updated to eliminate the pen. The pen is based on Neo-pen and paper technology. This was an absurd attempt by a mediocre company to sell an over priced pen. Do not contact me again. Minus one star.
Vaporware
Update Aug 5 2025 I’m happy to report I’ve been able to add stars to my review. The new version of Notebooks, after some growing pains, supports the features I had when o bought my smart pen 2 years ago. Sync works, transcription is good even for my chicken scratch, and I’m beginning to see value again in my investment in the Moleskine Smart system. Update OCT 22 2025 I can’t express my disappointment enough. There was a silent decision to disable sync in Jan 2025 while working on a new improved version. So far I’ve been given 4 release dates. June of 25, Sept of 25, Oct of 25, and now in a response to someone else’s comments, Nov of 25. 10 months without sync to their server, and no end in site. I purchased this and one of the key features was sync between my iPhone and iPad. I paid a premium price for what I assumed was a premium device and service. What a let down. UPDATE July 3 2025 I’ve had to remove some stars. Several months ago, my sync stoped working. I was told at the time that they were working on a new version, and turned off the sync servers to get ready for the new product, and it would be ready “hopefully by June” I’m disappointed that users weren’t notified that sync would be disabled for an extended time, and that there is no updated timeline for the new version. I understand there are often delays in software development, but the overall lack of communication leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when cross device sync was a key feature Moleskine announced for this product. **original review** I purchased a competitor’s product last summer. I had an issue and contacted support, and no response to multiple inquiries over a couple of weeks time. I decided to purchase the Moleskine Smart system as a smart notebook is helpful in my work, and it lives up to its promise. I did have a minor issue which I’ve reported to their support, and got a timely and helpful response. I wish I bought this system in the first place.
Getting There
App works pretty well but doesn't capture everything. The constant reminder to leave a review is frustrating and knocked it down two stars.
Better But Still Needs Work
The most recent version has improved. Digital transcription very dependent on handwriting. Integrations with Apple Calendar and Reminders leaves a lot to be desired. Tags can be applied but they do not show up on the page in the app and cannot be applied to a specific section of the notes on a page. Hope they continue to make improvements.

Due to the recent update, my current pen is useless. Support is abysmal.
New to Notes!
Wanted a way to digitise my meeting notes - from 2 different meetings - so bit the bullet and bought a second user Moleskine pen and notebook. Copied one existing notebook to a Smart notebook and the system seems to be working well, even in Welsh! I’m told that a forthcoming update to the Notes app will sort a few problems out - March / April? - at the moment I cant update or log in. Fingers crossed! Will also need to tidy up my handwriting!
Disappointed, after spending so much on the smart system
I don’t understand what is going on with their app, but the writing doesn’t make it cross device, and setting up an account to do so is bricked. You thus must pick either your iPhone or iPad. You can’t use the app on both. I’m super bummed out right now as it’s pretty much useless to me at this juncture. Bad development!
Beta
How do we sign up for the Beta? The fact that I can sync across accounts is annoying. Additionally, this would be worthwhile if it also had a digital notebook option so that I can go back and forth between my Apple Pencil and my Smart pen.
Absolute nightmare
Super happy until they updated software. Then complete endless nightmare. The pen would not sync my notebook then it could not write to more than one smart notebook at the time- I had a planner a small pocket version and the regular notebooks- tech support said tough luck reset the pen and you’ll lose all the writings. Then it lost my older notebooks. Then they said I had to block notebooks, unblock them, etc. Total frustration for months. I asked for a new pen so I can keep working… crickets. Be aware
New Moleskine Notebooks app is unusable
The original Moleskine Notes and its successor M+ Notes both worked well. They connected to the pen and updated reasonably quickly. It was relatively easy to find a date or page. The new version keeps telling me I have multiple versions of my notebooks and asks me which one I want to keep. For example I have one notebook labeled 2026, but a message pops up whenever I use the pen, i.e. write a word—pop up, do I want to make this my default notebook and archive the others?—write a second word—pop up, do I want to make this my default notebook and archive the others?—write a third word, same pop up. Seriously annoying. The new app doesn’t completely update. Many pages are blank or contain only a small portion of the content that is in the paper notebook. There doesn’t seem to be any way to go back to the old app and retrieve everything that the pen wrote. Very disappointed. Would rate it a zero if I could.
Missing direct link
It would be helpful to connect the Pen with Notes on my Notebook and not only with my smartphone
Would be great if it worked consistently!
Use this tool and then realize it’s not capturing and I can’t go back and get those pages. It is NOT intuitive AT ALL. This could be so much better with just a little fine tuning. As a CIO this product makes me sad as it’s sooo close.

Was quite skeptical of how useful this would be. Can only say, I love it and now only hope they develop a square paper notebook and add something that can keep the pen with the notebook….
Old Moleskine app was better
The old app version allowed you to customize the notebook cover (title, band color, paper style, etc.), create multiple notebooks, customize font, and insert images which is so much better than what this app version has to offer.
Ganz gut.
Also bis jetzt klappt es ganz gut. Die Transkriptionssprache habe ich auf deutsch eingestellt. Nach Installation der Sprache deutsch ausgewählt und die Transkription hat recht gut funktioniert. Ich brauchte auch nichts groß ändern. Mal sehen wie das dauerhaft läuft. Edit : leider kann ich mich nicht anmelden. Solange das nicht funktioniert, 1 Punkt Abzug. Einen Account habe ich schon. Mit den anderen beiden Apps bin ich angemeldet, das funktioniert. Nur diese App noch nicht. Ich warte ab.
Frustrating tool and little support
This is really meant for non-Windows users because there is not an option to be able to use this with windows. So now I have to use my little tiny phone to see what notes I wrote. But that is only when it works. My pen has not synced with my app for the last week and so it’s pointless to even have this tool. It’s also really frustrating because the notes do not always get recognized by the app. You have to have the app open and with you for it to have a digital version created. I have had to go back and rewrite my notes on top of what’s already there in order to make sure it gets digitized. There is almost no troubleshooting information or knowledge base.
Wonderful if they fix it
I love the idea of a paper notebook that’s also digital. For me it’s so much better than something like Remarkable. The Moleskine notebooks are lovely and the 26 planner does link very easily to Apple or Google calendars. But the software is terribly unreliable. I’ve been trying to get it to sync across devices all year and you never know if will work. Now you can’t even log in to sync because this has been disabled ahead of some major upgrade (for which I suspect we should read subscription). There’s a post here where that upgrade was promised last September. I’ve just been told by support that’s now the end of December. So I can’t sync between iPhone and iPad at all right now which is a real pain. Come on Moleskine. Get your act together. This should be so great.

New update to the app is quite hilariously bad. The last one wasn’t great but was intuitive and kept things in order. The only thing users want is the digital copy of the writings they make on their notebooks. But the update seems to try to be something else that no one really asked for. The data transfer is also very poor and i wish they gave me a warning in advance so I was able to have a copy of my data from the old app. I’m sure there’s work arounds for the data transfer as well but because the interface is hard to navigate you end up with lost data or just feeling really unorganized.
Is this app still being maintained?
Love my Moleskine Smartpen even with its glitches. I have not been able to update the app since version 1.03. Is it still being maintained? The App Store reports later versions but I can’t update to them. Thank you.
Still waiting for tech-support
I purchased a pen and a few notebooks and I’ve been having syncing issues across devices since day one. I sent tech support 4 separate emails in the last two two weeks and I haven’t had a single reply. It’s pretty disappointing considering the high cost of the device and the beautiful notebooks. I love Moleskin and have supported the brand throughout the years, but I’ve been pretty shocked at how unresponsive their tech-support is. I hope they will prove me wrong when they read this. (Additionally the pen’s battery life is far from what was advertised. But my main issue is not being able to sync properly, despite trying every troubleshooting idea available).
Not worth the price point if paying retail for the hardware.
The smart pen itself is made by another company Neo lab. My pen does not have any firmware revisions available for it. It’s still on revision one. Meaning that they have not worked on the software for the pen for a considerable amount of time and have never released software updates for the firmware of the pen. My pen / the software has issues with digitalization, and will sometimes draw random pen strokes. It also has had trouble registering pen strokes towards the top of the page. The app user interface is confusing and hard to navigate. It feels like the software hardware combo was rushed to market before working out the bugs. The pen itself is a good weight but feels like it might become uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time. Would be nice if there was an open source component to the software so independent developers could work out some of the bugs and speed up the revision cycle.
Game changer
This is great! Hoping someday it’s the new norm and the price for the whole system comes down. I’m eagerly awaiting a desktop application for Mac!
New update is horrendous
The original app wasn’t flashy, but reliable and fairly intuitive. The newest update has been a cluster from the beginning. It is incredibly slow, choppy, nothing is loading. It will not load any of the pages. Absolutely useless now.

Lost notes
I have my old not book with my notes in it, and the file on my Google drive but I can’t open it. I hadn’t used it for a while and changed phones but I think since my google account is in the cloud, it’s backed up! I like the concept, but I think I’ll be backing up to pdf as soon as I transcript.
Poor app ux and support
I have tried to create a smart account for the last two days. The account creation process doesn’t give any sort of confirmation, when I try to login the request times out, and as a result, I have not been able to see my notes on my iPhone and my iPad, which is what I would’ve wanted. Additionally, I have not even received a reset password link so I don’t really know what to do. I love the pen, but the digital support is definitely not up to par.
Nice idea if it worked
The app and pen seldomly work. It gets stuck while transferring to the app. It’s not much more than an expensive pen. Not ready for prime.
Holding users hostage
I cant believe the company is forcing me to sign up for a service I don't want to access my personal notes. I will not use the smart products again
Very good but with poor bits
Firstly I bought this primarily to transcribe notes. I am an author but still find ideas come easier with a pen than a blank screen. I was actually quite amazed how few typing mistakes it makes transcribing my scruffy writing! However, whilst it uploads multiple pages in text format correctly, the Word upload of multiple pages is rubbish. It gets the order wrong and duplicates pages. The other consideration with text is that you get a line feed at the end of every line in your notebook. This can make reformatting into a word document a pain. However , I found a workaround. When writing my notes, I write hash symbol (#) every time I want a line break in the final document, I then upload text and cut and paste into Word. It takes seconds. Within Word, I replace every line break with a space and then every hash symbol with a paragraph mark again this takes seconds. I then tried drawings. These you can export as jpg and png with and without the background lines but you can also export vectors. This is particularly useful as in an another package, I can then scale the drawing to whatever size I like. It is also easier to edit it as discovered that every time I lift the pen, it leaves an editable line. I was so impressed with this feature that I’ve gone ahead and bought a plain notebook purely for drawings. I should also add, when I bought my plain notebook, I bought a second lined one simply to save on postage cost and you do have to suss out how to have two notebooks on the go at the same time within the app, otherwise you will get in a horrible muddle, but it’s not that difficult. You archive one before starting on the other and then archive that if you want to revert to the one you were using originally. I don’t think you can realistically expect to be able to produce a finished document in your notebook and not have to edit it somewhere else afterwards. As long as you accept this proviso then for transcribing handwriting and uploading a rough diagram, then this is proving to be extremely useful to me. Had the Word upload worked, I would probably have given it five stars.
The app does not sink with the calendar as it states
I have tried to make the app sink but no luck. At thee two stores I went in Paris where I purchased my smart planner, none of the managers knew how to help me. I have emailed twice and I have not received a response. What should I do?
Incorrect dates
Since the new year all my notes have been dated back to 1969??? With no option to fix it!
My good pen
I bought this product three days ago and it is really interesting I am doing my sketches and some of my notes in this book but since I’m not using English handwriting the ability office scanning English texts is not useful for me but using different pen colors and different pen thicknesses is very interesting for sketching and doing detail design.
Smart Pen Doesn’t Work
I can no longer use my pen. It says it’s “no longer supported”. There was nothing wrong with my pen, it worked fine. Now I have to be a new for for $200(+) or I can No longer use my system. There should have been a notification that said to not update the app or your older pen won’t work. This feels like a scam to get me to pay for a new pen.

Poor app
Same as the other reviews. Really like the concept but the app doesn’t seem to sync or update the pen. It’s a shame because a few less bugs and a slightly better editing experience (such as being able to easily manipulate pages) and a way to better integrate with either apps such as Apple notes would make this great.
A flaky and frustrating up
Plus points 1. The hand writing capture is pretty good Minus points 1. The translation from image to digital is quite poor - hit and miss really 2. The transfer of data from the pen to the appl is flaky - always takes ages and prone to locking 3. Limited features I don’t this this appl is production quality is more like a beta.
Briilant
I was nervous about buying it , just another gadget, but it is brilliant, having your hand written notes in your phone , makes such a difference if your someone who is a note taker.Cant recommended it enough.
YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICES
The original app was never great but it worked and I could keep my content locally without using their cloud services. This new 3.0 major update forces you to upload all of your old notes to the cloud. After updating the app, they give you an option to export your old notebooks to an offline format (probably pdf) but that option only comes up once. If you skip that export option (which I did to better understand my options later in the legacy notebook migration flow), you’re basically screwed; you are forced to upload all your content to their cloud. If you don’t upload your content to their cloud, they lock you out of YOUR notebooks. IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICE, YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS. In summary: - It costs over $200 USD for their criminally mediocre “smart” pen - NO OFFLINE OPTION: In order to use Moleskin’s “smart” notebook system, you are forced to upload your content to their cloud services. - This is an egregious, user-hostile change to this moleskin “smart” ecosystem. I’ll admit the physical Moleskin notebooks are wonderful. Great products. But the “smart”/digital side of the ecosystem is a scam. We, the users are now the product. They’re going to milk us for our data and we’ll inevitably find out about a massive data breach at some point. Do yourself a favor and avoid Moleskin’s “smart” products. I feel anything but smart for getting so invested in their garbage.
The app doesn’t sync my notes anymore
The app worked fine the first two months. Then, when I didn’t sync for a longer time and more data was left in the smart pen I would never be able to sync it again. The app takes forever during the syncing and in the end t just freezes never finishes the process. If everything worked it’d be an amazing app
Pen connection issues
The pen will often show as on but is not communicating with the pad meaning re-writing again. Not good.
Could be worse.
I used Livescribe before and am new to this set up. I’ve read some reviews here that are less than favourable. My experience so far is that it works and offers more features and an infinitely better experience than my last system’s app which was awful. My teething issues: 1. There is half a page that didn’t upload to the phone (Some of which was used for calibration). 2. The pen had to be re-paired to the phone on my second use. Feature request: 1. Ability to view pages in reverse to the current view, ie; oldest first. 2. Backup to iCloud instead of only Google or Microsoft as options. 3. The option to customise the use for the on paper envelope icon. Or, at least the option to choose email the pdf, email a transcription or both as an option in settings. I haven’t used this system much yet as this was a gift from a friend but despite the pen feeling a little cheap on the whole it is already better than Livescribe’s set up. Mostly centred around the app, theirs is terrible this one works and offers more. I will return to this review after more experience using the pen and app The pen etc… I have is an older version that charges via mini usb despite being a brand new unopened writing set. So far, so good and I hope it stays this way, and if implemented, I would make good use of my suggested features.
Really Impressed
I have the late 2021 version of the Smart Writing Set. Everything works as it should. I’m left-handed and write at a strange angle but with the exception of a few words the OCR works really well. Calendar syncing is particularly good. I can’t comment on the old version of the app, but mine has worked without fault.
Suddenly the new app forces to create and account and send my private notes on their cloud
It looks like they decided to introduce AI features nobody asked for and charge a subscription fee for that. So, they give customers no option to keep the setup they had before: with no account and everything stored locally.
An extremely poor upgrade with fewer features than 1.0
The push to an upgraded app has run into so many issues - this has been going on for over a year now. With fewer features to 1.0. From the migration does not work, nor does the lack of recognising that the pen has been used to draft a number of additional notes to pages in the book. When syncing the pen - my notes hadn’t even been uploaded to the app. I may as well have just underspent and purchased a standard pen and paper at this rate. 1.0 was fine - only issue was with the sync to gdrive in its latter stages. Now both apps appear to have been rendered useless. I’ll continue with 1.0 until the upgrade is finally ready. I just hope its worth it when 1.0 is discontinued, otherwise - there will be a lot of customers migrating to other platforms. Edit: this has been improved of late and although there appear to be fewer bugs and issues with the app and pen, there is still some work to be done on the conversion from handwriting to text formats. Maybe this will be improved overtime as my newer pen is getting used to my handwriting. Please also note that one needs to upgrade their pen with this latest app as the old one doesn’t pick up everything on the tablet.
Access to my account
Hello, I can't access to my account from the app. How can I synchronize the different devices? So I can see all the notebooks in all my different devices? The error message when I try to acces to my account is:(Notes_2_0.LocalServiceError error 1.)
Does t do what it says it will
The tech and the app are not what I would expect from a world class brand. Clearly moving from traditional books for writing in, to a technology play has failed. The one thing it is designed to do - sync your pen with the app - it doesn’t do. My pen never completes a sync and therefore the data in the book is missing parts. Waste of money. Multiple upgrades still no solution.
