Genius
It solved the main issue that has stopped me from journaling forever: lack of sync with dynamic Google Calendar
Problems Using Latest Version
I stopped using for a while and now features that had worked don’t seem to work consistently any longer. I did update to the latest version and am on the latest iOS. I will say issues may be related to latest version of iOS, but not sure either way, just very frustrated with the app hence my current rating.
Lovely App
I really like this app and its apple pencil integration is wonderful. The only thing stopping me from a 5 star review is structural and organizational tools like stickers, washi tape, shape recognition and photos are limited and inconvenient to use in their current state. An example being you can’t change the width of washi tape or duplicate it. The basics are 10/10 but with the extras being as they are the app is competing with real paper 1 for 1 and sometimes i think i would rather the notebook i don’t have to charge. It also crashes semi consistantly with bigger notebooks but i have never lost any work so not a huge deal. Overall great app. Keep improving it and i will continue to use it.
Basic
There’s a lot of brushes, but not a lot and lots of sizes except the racer you can’t change the racer size and it’s tiny. The pressure sensitivity is terrible. It’s horrendous when I want to make my writing bigger. I have to press my Apple Pencil really hard against my iPad. Just to make my writing just a tiny bit bigger. Not even a mother would love this face. It has some free templates. Yes none of them are really good to say the least so if you do get the free ones red is kind of mess. It’s not really feels responsive and good for writing this is great for like some doodling and some drawing not so great for actual notetaking.
:/
great app, but support is nonexistent. i also wish that there were tutorials or something with the current version of the app, since i'm struggling with a function that should be possible. great idea, just something to work on
Penbook
It’s an all in one writing app
Annoying!
Cannot get this thing to work. I just paid to upgrade but many features are not available or don’t work. I cannot delete a page from a notebook. The swipe up to get the minimap does not work. There is no organizer button. Tried to submit a support query but the app only launches Apple Mail and I use Google. Would greatly appreciate if someone could reach out and help otherwise I will be canceling my subscription and requesting a refund.
Best handwriting
This is the best notes app I’ve found for beautiful handwriting. I’m an avid fountain pen user in real life, and the Penbook fountain pen tools come closer than anything else I’ve tried digitally to recreating that same look and feel. I also really love the simplicity of the notebooks and overall design. The app feels calm, intentional, and focused on the actual writing experience rather than overwhelming you with features. One feature I would absolutely love is the ability to manually adjust and lock the nib angle, especially when using Apple Pencil. That would make the writing experience feel even more natural and expressive for handwriting-focused users. If Penbook added that feature, it would easily be a five-star app for me.
No Customer Support
I loved this app when I first got the lifetime subscription in 2024, but since all the updates were added, I’m having difficulty with the app. It lags, freezes, and crashes quite often. It shows old books that were deleted and purged. The iCloud sync never works despite the series of troubleshooting that I’ve attempted on my own. The worst part is, I’ve tried reaching out for support on two separate occasions and no one in development seems to care. I really expected more after paying $30 for all the features. It seems I might have to find another app that supports my needs.
Registering Pen Contact
For the last week my Apple Pencil 2nd gen hasn’t been registering. Every like 5 to 10 minutes the screen won’t register that I am writing. But using other apps, the pen works perfectly fine. It’s very annoying since I am using this app to write notes for a class. I hope this is resolved as soon as possible. I pay for this app. When are you guys going to send an update patch to fix this and add writing stabilization?
I love this
And I love it so you don’t have to worry about doing summer work and ya know
Content Deleted
All of my content was deleted that I’ve been storing for over a year
Suggestions
The app is great! I would love to have more stickers though. Personal preference but it would be great if I can link a page of a notebook to another (like my planner) - wonder if anyone else would find value in that. Thank you penbook team!
No real, permanent dark mode + only 1 notebook free
1) The app kicking me out could be due to my location…the connection is consistently just horrible here. Most things don’t load right. 2) No permanent dark mode disturbs me because I’m very sensitive to light (getting migraines from it) and to be greeted by a big white screen just hurts. WHY do we have to manually switch it for every page, snd it doesn’t even save those pages when I make them dark? Other apps charge $ for the permanent all-over dark mode feature, not manual… 3) You can only make 1 notebook, I tried making two and it doesn’t work. 4) Idk what I was thinking, I’m just going to use physical notebooks from now on. These apps suck. Please do not use them if you’re seeking to be productive and not just aesthetic, and also love dark mode. 🫠 So many barriers to getting something done in an app with frequent reminders to upgrade. No thank you. I understand why it’s there, but it’s the wrong vibe for me.
Mostly good
Overall this is a good app., easy to use and fun. The new update changed things that didn’t need changed and made tools a little more difficult to use though. It also made something disappear which is the first time I have noticed that. The two biggest negatives for me are not being able to delete old or unneeded pages or books and not being able to change the title of a book once it is created.
Diario
Muy bueno
It should be easier
This is the least intuitive app I’ve used. I want to like it. It works with the pencil very well. But selecting templates, creating custom notebook designs and working with PDFs either simply don’t work or the features are impossible to find. I paid for this, but it frustrates me every time I try to use it.
Crashing
It’s a very nice app, but it’s been crashing easily since the new update. To be more specific, long pressing tools always causes the app to crash and turns off my iPad.
Lock please
I love this app and have been a paying user for several years. I am also a lefty and the accidental page movement is getting unbearable. I know others must have reported it as well so I’ve been waiting for a fix. PLEASE add a feature that allows me to lock the page in place!
More Options
The app works fine, but I wish there were more options in change the pages colors BEFORE you make the journal as well as being able to have custom covers
This is the coolest thing ever
I love this so far.
⚠️ Journal Editing is Very Limited
Once you create your journal whether or not you use pdf to start it, you can't add more pdf files as new pages, nor can you delete pages once you make any new ones. Back to Goodnotes 😞 And I was really loving the simplicity of it
Gimlet
It’s a good notebook but u need an Apple Pencil for it but no ads really good app
The note-taking app lacks even the most basic functions
The note-taking app lacks even the most basic functions. It cannot copy text from a PDF, perform OCR on text in images, or convert handwritten notes into text.
I used to love it
I have been using this app since Dec 2023 and have loved it — until just recently. I downloaded the latest iPad OS and about the same time Penbook did a big upgrade. The app hasn’t worked well since then. It freezes up or goes to a new page very slowly. I have contacted support numerous times and have gotten little to no help. I have a lot of material I don’t want to lose — otherwise I might consider just deleting the app. I am hoping by putting this review here that somebody will help me with this issue!
only been using it for five minutes, already falling in love lol
get it if you actually have things going on or wanna grow in any area
iCloud sync not working, & no way to manually sync?
I have loved this app for years—it’s so much more intuitive for me than its competitors, who all seem to focus much more on barely usable bells and whistles than the actual experience of writing in a notebook! However, for several months now, iCloud sync will not work between my devices. The app consistently displays a red cloud with an “x,” and tells me that iCloud has to be signed in and enabled for Penbook. I have checked my iCloud settings on both devices and it definitely is; other apps using iCloud sync are working just fine. The only solution I can find is to create a manual backup of the most current version, delete the app on the other device, and reinstall there with the manual backup. This is not a solution! I’d hoped a fresh install would solve the issue, but it has not, even when done on all devices, and I keep losing data—often several days worth or more at a time. As I said, I love this app in every other way, but until this is fixed, it is virtually unusable for me. There is no option within the app itself to adjust syncing settings that I can find. I would love to give this app 5 stars, but I just can’t. Please help!
Confusing
Do not have instructions for this
Crash, crash, glitch, glitch
I’ve had this app for 18 months and have enjoyed it and used it regularly. Not enjoying it at the moment and can’t use a number of the functions that it is meant to have. I updated to iPadOS 26 hoping that would help, but no improvement. Tried to add the advertised 2026 planner - crashed. Tried to add a large pdf as a notebook to annotate - crashed. Tried to add same large pdf in sections but it appears there is no longer an option to add pdf pages from within a notebook. Library icons randomly moving from neat rows to spaced out all over the screen. Pages disappearing then reappearing. Nothing syncing to iCloud even though I am signed in and sync is toggled on for the app. I have deleted and restored from manual backup (thank goodness I made one since it appears to have not synced for over a year!) half a dozen times trying to get it to function normally with the exact same issues occurring. Right now, this app is not worth the money I have paid for it. No confidence that any new notes/notebooks are going to be either functional or archivable. App needs repair.
PDFs won’t upload
Up nail this week, could easily upload PDFs. Upgraded to the legacy version and now I cannot upload anything. Not sure what happened.
My Must Have
This is my go to app for keeping my personal and professional life in sync. I like having the pen options to highlight and mark how I need to and the ability to add pages, format and choose layout is clutch in how I operate. I chose the lifetime subscription and I have enjoyed watching this app evolve and grow in capability at each iteration.
One star
I hate because i could not even draw or write of my day idk why i buy it for nothing but i hate it!
Okkkkk!
I ❤️❤️❤️it
2 star
This app is asking way too much questions
👾Glitchy Book📕
Really great app!😄👏It’s just that when I want to make a book of lists I want to make,I title it”Lists”, and it logs me out of the app.(Like,I see my Home Screen)! I ask you, PLEASE fix this glitch because it’s getting on my nerves.😬
Ok..
Just I put it to more people see this but, I hate I HATE HATE is no good for notes I can’t write good but I’ll give it 4 stars I feel so bad writing this but is my opinion.
Terrible terrible. Terrible. Terrible
Not letting you do anything it is not letting me draw it’s not letting me do anything it’s not even letting me read anything and it says Burke Burke, Burke, Burke. It’s not even letting me draw and there is a pen on the cover.
Its alright
I like it
Great handwriting app marred by horrendous image handling
Edited 11/5/25 — tried to give this app another go with updates. But it is so buggy, I cancelled the free trial after less than a day. It’s a pity really. May be even worse. Could not delete notebooks. After deleting them, I reopened app and found them all back where they were. The only good (great) thing about this app is the pens. Color selection is unbelievably awkward. Assembling a planner with dynamically populated content is cumbersome. Does not list events in monthly view — only tiny color boxes denoting an event but no way to see what the event is. No linking to day from month or week. Still has Great pens, great writing experience, and I absolutely adore the watercolor brush, as well as the ability to add different pens with different settings to the toolbar. However, the app’s horrendous handling of images in placement (no drag and drop), layout and resize, rotation and movement boggles the mind. HUGE crop and resize control overpower the images. Why? Why do you have image handling on a different “layer” that written words? And when I go to that layer to move or resize an image the writing disappears so you have no idea where you’re moving it to? Just bad UI. It’s a shame really. And no text recognition. Not yet ready for prime time.
GOoD aNd BaD
This app is a great idea with the books and stuff but I HATE THAT WE NEED TO GET PREMIUM SO WE CAN HAVE MORE THAN 1 BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please change this! It’s so annoying!
I love this app!
I rarely write reviews, but this is the perfect app for the creative type of person who owns an iPad mini and needs a reason to use the Apple Pencil.
Asked me to review twice in first 30 mins
It’s a great app otherwise so far, I just rate anything that interrupts me to rate it one star cause developers should stop adding that if they want good reviews and not annoyed ones ❤️
Page zoom in glitch
Overall I love this application except for the fact that anytime I try to zoom in on a page it will zoom out randomly and really slows down my note taking
Go girl give us nothing!
The app is great, I’m very picky when it comes to interface and the design of apps and such, and this app is visually appealing, ergonomic and intuitive, but you only get 1 notebook with the free version, which frankly is disappointing. Just another example of companies monetizing everything. I appreciate the experience though.
Please respond
Was very good at first but all my writing is getting faded for some reason as I’m writing why????
Great app for writing
I love it
HORRIBLE!
Whenever I try to write something down it just moves the page position! (°_°)
Lots of great features
It is a pretty good app, the drawing is fun but could be more professional. I would like a write to text option. I would like to be able to pull things from websites and write all over them. Also, I want to freely copy pages and sections of pages I make and paste them where I want them there is a bit of this but not the whole page and not enough. The pick up and grab tool could be more intuitive. Huge variety of templates. Great looking notebooks and the shelf is awesome. Fantastic organizing notebook tool. Keep improving it though.
Glitching
Why is it glitching so much??????????
Wish we could have more then one book :(
I don't like that we only get one book for premium :( even just being able to have two books for free would be better :(
