Flawless app
The app worked perfectly. It took just a few minutes to submit my New Zealand traveler request for me and my wife. I paid once for both of us. The passport scan is easy because it just needs the two lines at the bottom of the main page.

Overall good with one suggestion
The app is easy to use. The photo capture isn’t bad, at least I had minimal issue getting the photo done. The one suggestion I’d make is to be able to add the visa/entry authorization to the ‘wallet’ on my phone. That would be better than the steps to display it from the app itself.
Poor performance
The app is inconsistent when attempting to confirm passport information. It won’t allow the applicant to confirm correct passport information, so the app stalls at that point.
Renew option
Please consider adding a renew option in this app. My eta expires in one month and I want to get the new one now so I’m ready for my trip. The app won’t seem to let me. So I have to do this through the website and pay extra.
Fixed issue quickly
Initially, I got stuck due to a bug in the app. They fixed it, and now everything works. Quick and easy!
Stopped working!
An earlier NZeTA expired. When I open the app to apply for a new NZeTA the app gets stuck with a message that it’s checking my NZeTA status. It never gets this done. I checked that I have the current app version installed.

Checkbox broken
Update: they resolved the below issue and the application is now a smooth process. Rating increased in light of the fix. The app is currently unusable due to a confirmation checkbox that cannot be selected.

The photo setting is hopeless, it can take days to get a photo that it accepts, and you can’t move on until it has accepted one…..

App didn’t update when the visa was approved and ended up having a difficult conversation with check in crew because I couldn’t find the email that had been sent saying the visa had been improved. Please fix the bugs as this may have been the difference between me being allowed in or not!
Not Able to Use
NZeTA my phone was just updated to new software iOS 26.1 and this app does not work with latest update. Hopefully it resolve in few days as I fly to NZ in 12 days! 😬

Doesn’t work on US passports
US Passport scan doesn’t capture all required information and there is no way to manually enter it. Have to pay more and use browser.

I received an email telling me that my application had been accepted, but even days later, my status has not been updated on the App.
App Doesn’t Automatically Update Status
Although my application was approved in less than 11 hours, some two weeks later, the app was still showing it as pending. Discovered that you have to drag your finger down the screen to manually force it to refresh and update. Should really be set to auto-refresh on each launch, or include an on-screen instruction on the need to do this manually.
Mostly good and easy, needs updating
Easy to use, great feature is it does multiple people per entry. Problem with recognizing newer bank cards, and taking the photograph regularly misrecognizes multiple people when they aren’t there, so needs a manual “take a picture now” button. Did a great job of recognizing passports.
Version 1.7.4 is broken
Current version (1.7.4) of the app is broken. May work if you can revert to an older version or wait for the next version which hopefully will fix the problem.
Easy to use
It was easy to use, taking the photo is a little tricky ( though Australian app is worse in taking photo, tried probably 15-20x on Aus app). It took few tries for my husband and when it accepted the photo, he was talking and so his mouth was slightly open. We did know what made it accept the photo eventually, because it automatically takes the photo. Me and my son, got our eta issued within 30 mins while my husband got issued the next day. Disappointed with the tourist international fee. As a tourist, we will be spending a lot already in the country (tours, hotels, restaurants, etc)… but looking forward to visiting this beautiful country.
Very hit-and-miss
Had three people to apply for visas for a family trip. First person competed their application fine, but was unable to add any more people on that device due to a t&c’s accept button being missing on an iPhone 14, so had to use another device. Second person on iPad Mini was able to apply no problem, and was able to start application for the last person. Third person was able to scan passport, but trying to scan their face was impossible. Was instant for first two people. Tried on multiple other iOS devices in the exact same scenarios, lighting and positions but couldn’t get it to work. Third person was forced to apply using the website which costs slightly more.
So faulty
I had to try several times to apply and I was finally able to for the payment to not process. I closed out and restarted and now it’s charged me twice for my application. Now I need to try to get my money back. It’s unfair to tell people to use the app to apply when the app doesn’t function properly.

This is frustrating. I am stuck on step two out of five. The check box “the information is accurate” Cannot be checked. Restarting the phone, deleting and downloading the app does not fix the issue. multiple attempts and still cannot move onto the next page.

Don’t trust the app
We didn’t realise we had to apply for our son (we are NZ passport holder) who is a U.K. passport holder. Applied via the app at the airport and then after 40 minutes decided to ask the airport check in staff if they had received it. The airline had. 40 minutes after going through security the app still says pending. Obviously we should have done it earlier but the fact the app doesn't update at the same time I would always check with the airline.

Confirm button not working
Currently there is a bug that will not allow passport details to be confirmed on the app once a picture has been taken. The entire application grinds to a halt….Please fix ASAP

Zoom View issues
When the iPhone’s display zoom is set to zoom (Settings > Display and Brightness > Display Zoom) then the continue button at the bottom on page 3 is not visible/accessible. Tested on iPhone 8. Please fix.
Smooth
The NZeTA app worked very smoothly. Passport scan worked well and you are allowed to retake the photo of your face multiple times…and the hints of how to position your phone camera were helpful. The remainder of the questions (at least for a US citizen) and payment process were seamless. Nicely designed app, especially compared to many government apps!

Not as bad as you think
The reviews here were a little worrying but it was fine for me! I had to retake the Live Photo a couple times (because I wasn’t happy with it - not the app) and the first time it lagged so I closed and opened the app again. The next time I retook the photo a few times and it was great, no lagging at all. Got approved within a minute! Can’t wait to visit NZ in a few weeks!
Crashes and takes very long, website faster
While checking in for a transfer flight via Auckland the attendant told me that I need a NZeTA even if I never going to leave the transit zone and only will spend 2 hours in transit. They also told me that with the NZeTA-app it’s easy and will only take a few minutes. There will be enough time to get the NZeTA in order to be able to check in for my flight leaving in 3 hours. So I downloaded the app and had no problem to scan my passport, but when I had to take a photo of myself the app crashed, again and again and again. Probably 15 minutes later after having restarted the app more than 20 times I eventually succeeded and could take the photo. Paid the fee and submitted the application. And then I waited ... 1 1/2 hours later and much closer to my scheduled flight it was still pending. A phonecall to immigration in Auckland didn’t help and the airline attendant didn’t want to check me in without a granted NZeTA. I could already see my aeroplane leaving without me, when I read in these reviews that the website was much faster. So I tried the website, submitted the required information and paid again the fee. Only 30 seconds later, the NZeTA was granted. It took a big load of my mind. 2 days after I arrived back home, the NZeTA requested via the app was eventually granted... By the way, I didn’t spend any money at Auckland airport (even though I would have loved something to eat and drink) and will avoid transiting in NZ in the future. The only countries which I experienced requiring a transit visa were the USA and Russia...
worked well and fast but no information how to handle 2nd. surname
Very fast process and data are correctly. I did not get information if the name of birth ist relevant like in the online form. So I added it manually ...hope this is acceptable by customs.

You are ruining lives
The APP is broken. After scanning passport successfully, the “please confirm all details are correct button” is broken. I’m coming for a funeral. I ended up applying online with a longer processing time. Absolute incompetence.
Works pretty well now
This app works pretty well as of August 2022. The UI does not look great but fortunately we do not need to look at it everyday. Payment experience could be improved by integrating with Apple Pay.
Reflection problems
Got one passport done, wouldn’t work on mine due to reflection problems. There was no reflection. Maybe the online fee should be lowered to the same as the app fee until they sort out the issues.
