Affordable and Easy to use
I have had this amazing app for over a year now. I recently started canning and preserving my food again and this app has made it so easy to keep recipes that I want to try. Whether it be regular dinners or canning/preserving recipes I have it all at my fingertips because of this app! Please note though: I do still keep hard copy books because it is still technology and there is always a chance that this will go down at some point!
Recipe import non-functional
I was so excited to purchase the plus version of this app and collect recipes that have been sitting around in hard copy. But I’m disappointed to see that the import function is completely non-functional now. Importing from camera just directs me to a page prompting me to purchase plus (which I already have) or the pricier plan, and there’s no way to actually do the import. I’ll be trying to get my money back.
Great
Really handy but lower the prices for premium
Only 5 recipes
For an app marketed as free on the App Store this app only allows you to add 5 recipes before telling you, you have to pay $20-30 dollars to be allowed to add more along with unlocking the rest of the features. While I understand unlocking extra features only allowing 5 recipes for the base is a little ridiculous I would understand 30-50 recipes seeing as they are our recipes we are adding but only 5 seems a stretch. Not to mention they don’t tell you the limit until you’ve reached it so I just spent over an hour entering in 4 recipes before realizing I have to pay to unlock the ability to add more. The app is great but the execution of level locking and transparency is poor.
Love the app… needs updates
I’m on my second year of paying for premium and while I truly love the app, there seem to be minimal to no improvements coming. For example, if the website has sections, it won’t read the sections. Additionally there is no way to “rate” recipes to help build a better meal plan for the week - in fact it doesn’t even de-dupe when creating a meal plan for the week. PLEASE FIX THESE BUGS and it’ll be a 5-star!
Excellent Recipe Manager
I’m obsessed with converting recipes I find on Instagram, blogs, and even cookbooks into meal plans for the week. The cost for Plus/Discover is a fraction of the cost of competitors and it syncs smoothly to other household members and the kitchen iPad for cooking. Love it.
Used to be 5 stars
Don’t offer a one-time purchase for all the Pro features only to lock some of those features behind a monthly description afterwards. Completely defeats the purpose of paying more upfront for a one time purchase. Scummy business practice.
I LOVE THIS APP!!!
This app is AMAZING! It’s so amazing and I love that most of the features are free and the subscription is just $1.99 a month :) please never change that, I just have one thing I’d like to suggest, I’d love if the grocery list had pre generated things you could add or when you add a recipe for it to give you the option to paste those into your grocery list instantly, AMAZING app
Beautiful but pricey.
This app is absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, being limited to 5 recipes without paying $25 to upgrade is very much a dealbreaker. I will be finding a new recipe app, sadly.
Was excellent but need to pay monthly for smart import loses stars
I loved this app and previously rated at five stars. It seems that overtime, they have taken some features and put it behind a monthly paywall. Specifically, smart import where you can get a PDF or text file and have it imported correctly into Crouton has now been moved behind a paywall. I already paid once, if I recall, about $20 for lifetime premium. Now it seems that this useful smart import feature is hidden behind a two dollar a month fee. I do not use this app regularly enough to warrant $24 per year for this Smart import feature. I will probably switch to a different app unfortunately
Perfect but a few features I’d like to request
Please add the ability rate a recipe and it show visually as you look through recipes. I have a lot of recipes and it really helps if I can see which ones I’ve made and rated highly. Also I wish we could toggle between or have added a meal planner queue. I don’t always have recipes planned for a certain day depending on left overs or appetite. It’s nicer for me to have a Queue of recipes to reference that I’d like to try making soon or next.
You pay for it and then they change what you get
I paid for this app to get the ability to have unlimited recipes and to be able to import PDFs and take pictures of recipes to import them. It was great for the first couple months and then they made updates and now those features are behind a monthly fee. Talk about a bait and switch. The app is nice, I like the setup of it, and it is very user-friendly. I just feel like I got swindled out of money just to have features that I purchased for a lifetime taken away.
Paprika-killer!
Thoroughly enjoy using this app, as I was a long time user of Paprika. My only suggestion would be to have synchronization for meal plans with Apple Calendar. I very much need that feature!
Useless
I downloaded to change to metric but everything is still in cups not grams so its totally useless
Great app with a shortcoming
For recipes that have dual measurements (1 cup / 120g flour), scaling the recipe only modifies the first measurement. Paprika scales both measurements, but I prefer using Crouton! This fix would be greatly appreciated.
Really incredible app
I love this app so so so so much, and I love the updates it has received over the years. It easily scrapes websites for recipes and saves them to your local device, and it’s gotten better with time. I have nothing but the highest praise for this app!!!
Could use help in the formatting department.
I’m OCD about the presentation and formatting of my recipes and that is falling apart in Crouton as it doesn’t seem to support tiered bulleted lists, etc. so I’m having to find creative workarounds. Additionally iCloud sync does not work. I added pictures to my recipes from my phone (since I used it to take the pics) and I’ve pushed sync on my iPhone and iPad more times than I can count and the pictures and both devices are still not in sync with each other. The solution offered in the app is turn off a bunch of the features you pay for with iCloud+? So many other apps have figured this out without this - reach out to other developers and ask for help (respectfully). Update: please fix annoying formatting issues like when you try to select text within the steps it wants to drag the whole back of text versus selecting - what kind of UI decision was that - imagine if every item you wanted to SELECT something Apple said no take the whole box and drag it - the more normal behavior is allowing people to select especially since you already have the sandwiches on the side to allow for re-ordering. Update 2: Smart Import is NOT smart. How do you take a numbered list and literally put ALL the steps for a whole section under one number - they’re literally numbered. There doesn’t seem to be a winner in this category of app - all have their own quirks and things that require you to fight the app versus the app just recording recipes as advertised - go figure. The Notes app is still the GOAT at this point. Update 3: another example of UI design and produces unintended changes: I realized I was editing part of a recipe that had already been editing and when to hit escape thinking it would take me back a screen. Apparently escape is programmed to discard all changes without any warning. So 30 minutes of work gone.
Great app! So handy, a little buggy.
I love this app. There are a few things that could be better though. Some recipes don’t import well and all the instructions are put into one step. If I use the share feature in Safari to share to Crouton, it sometimes freezes up and I have to quit Safari to get it working again.
Hangs when importing from website
The import from pictures works mostly okay, as long as the text is clearly visible and there’s not pictures underneath as you often find in recipes books. The website import however is a mixed bags of bugs: it either imports incorrect measures, doesn’t dissociate fillings from crust ingredients and more importantly, nine out of ten times the import will simply hang, with a pinwheel rotating and a text saying import, at which point I have to close Safari and try again. Import from website is what I mostly use and the bugs are so annoying that I’m knocking off 3 stars for these alone.
Great Recipe App
Crouton is a great recipe app. The interface is easy to use and I love that it is AI supported so It intuitively imports and creates recipes from text, links or downloads. I also like the sip by step cooking process where you click and it shows you the next step. I would give it 5 stars but at time it can be buggy and sometimes the imports can get ingredient quantities wrong. You also have to check to make sure they are correct. The other thing holding me back from a 5 star rating is that there is no Android app. Hello? 72% of people have Android phone as compared to 28% Mac. Extensions for Firefox and Chrome are also needed.
Day One Paprika defected to this gem…
Look no further, this multi OS app is the best. I used Paprika from day one. But the development team seemed to be happy no evolving, and also not taking my repeated suggestions to incorporate OCR/AI supported importing from camera. It’s a game changer. I’m at someone”s house, they have that killer recipe in a cookbook, and in less than 10 seconds, it’s perfectly imported into Crouton. And by the way, if you used to use Paprika, one can import your full data set into Crouton.
Awful experience
I installed Crouton on my MacBook M2 running Tahoe 26.5.1 and tried to manually enter a recipe. I first tried to give the recipe a name but I couldn’t type into that box. I thought, maybe there has to be an actually recipe before I can give it a name, so I typed in the ingredients and the steps and tried again. Still couldn’t type in the Recipe Name box. I tried saving it but couldn’t without giving it a name. This really looks like an IOS app that was ported to macOS without rigorous testing. I’ve uninstalled it.
Best recipe app
This is by far my favorite recipe app. My only issue is that there is still no integration with Google Calendar yet. It’s a pain to have to be going back and forth to schedule meals based on my school/work schedule. If Google cal integration was there, it would be unbeatable.
Has potential but no bulk import
This app is better thought through than many, but I already have ~100recipes saved in other platforms. I can export them as PDFs, but Crouton can only import 1 recipe at a time, and each one takes a minute or two to process... and you have to sit there and wait for it to finish each one. It would take many hours of tedious work to transition to it. Too bad, really. Many good ideas in the app.
Apple Recipes
Can't import Apple recipes.
The best recipe APP EVER!!!
Whoever came up with this app is a genius. This app is simple but gives you so much. I love the meal plan and grocery shopping linked to my Apple Notes grocery list which I share with my husband. Might try the discover features. Yes, it is worth the price, I promise because I don’t like in-app purchases!
Subscription required to import recipes
I’m on the plus version and I can’t import recipes from simple text files (markdown) or pdf’s unless I pay for a subscription. Pdf’s might be trickier but a markdown or text file, really? I understand subscriptions when there are server costs involved but for things that are easily processed on-device it’s just unacceptable, especially when a “plus” version has already been purchased.
Paprika import
I really like the app. While Crouton does support importing a Paprika backup, the ability to import the Paprika folder structure would make like much easier. Having to sort my 1400 recipes to match Parila is quite daunting.
Smart import
Should not be behind a subscription paywall. That should be the bread and butter for imports…on a recipe app….
Easy to use, but can’t use on multiple devices
Easy to use and has exactly what I want! However, I’ve downloaded it on my iPad (which will be in the kitchen) and I want to have it on my phone as well in case I find recipes / want to use the grocery feature. tried adding myself to the home sharing feature but doesn’t work (whether I’m logged in in a different Apple account or not). Would be super useful so my partner and I can use it, while it’s also living in our home iPad
New User
I have been wanting to digitize my recipes and after some research landed on Crouton as a solution. So far, so good. Looking forward to fully utilizing its functionality and handoff feature between my laptop for entry and iPhone for accessing ingredients when I grocery shop.
Desktop app leaves much to be desired
- Can’t zoom recipe - no keyboard shortcuts - small windows for editing recipes just more cumbersome to use than iOS apps
If you collect recipes, you want this app
A nicely designed app for collecting and categorizing recipes. It’s not free, but doesn’t cost much, and unlike so many apps these days, it’s just a one-time payment, not an annual subscription. One feature alone makes it worth the price: the ability to import recipes from links (it even detects when you have a link on the clipboard and offers to import it). I’ve used the feature with half a dozen different sites, and the import of the important information (title, photo, ingredients, steps) is always flawless.
Nice looks, pity about high pressure sales tactic.
I’m sure it’s a nice app, and they do a great job with staying current with Apple’s design ethos, but I hate, hate, HATE being pressured into decision-making such as Crouton’s offering a discount if I purchase the full version within the first 24 hours of downloading. Good apps can stand on their own merits. Also, importing recipes turned out to be more of a pain than I expected due to Crouton reading my “2-1/4” that I do for readability as “a range from two to one-fourth” rather than “two and one fourth”. Paprika may be showing its age, but at least it understands what I mean when I scale recipes without having to manually convert to “2¼”.

Easy way to keep up with your recipes
I’ve tried several different recipe managers but this one is my favorite. It easily updates across all my devices and gives you flexibility for portion size. Importing from a website is seamless. Another nice feature is the auto advance when looking at the directions.
Missing features
to the best of my knowledge, still no way to bulk delete recipes. When importing from another app, categories / folders do not sync.
Could use one extra feature request AND A WEB APP PLEASE??
One feature I would love to see is a extra Siri Shortcut for ADDING GROCERIES. You have shortcuts action for recipes, meal plans, and step-by-steps. But it's missing one extra shortcut: ADD GROCERIES TO MY GROCERY LIST. Please add it. And PLEASE MAKE A WEB APP AND A WINDOWS APP. Not everyone who uses Crouton has a Mac. Even I don't have a Mac yet and would be years before getting to own one. At least add a Web App or make a Windows app for once!
Nice app, poor sharing feature
The app is decent and at managing recipes however, huge feature I need doesn’t work. Won’t allow me to share to household/link to another person as a couple this means the app is unusable. The household share feature comes up with an error when trying to share.
Handy to have but import is poor
Imports from Instagram are really poor, and seem to have gotten worse recently. It means essentially the app acts as a bunch of links rather than an holding the recipes themselves, which makes it less appealing. I have increasingly been finding the same issue with recipes directly from websites.
Love it.
I use this every day. It’s an indispensable part of my kitchen.
Crouton: Recipe Manager
I love most parts of crouton. Now that I have quite a few recipes saved it lags quite a bit. The grocery list adds things separately instead of combining ingredients for the grocery list. And each ingredient that’s on the grocery list should also tell What recipe it’s coming from, if that makes any sense. 01.18.26 Just updated my iPad and the app won’t even open. I pad has iPadOS 26.2 on it. Also I’m not able to she crouton with anybody that doesn’t have an Apple device.
Sync with MacBook?
I bought the premium expecting it to sync my account between my MacBook and my iPhone. I spent an hour collecting my fave recipes, went onto my phone and it’s blank… I don’t want my laptop in the kitchen when I’m cooking with my family. Great app otherwise.
Put Feature Behind Subscription
Bought the "one-time" "life-time" purchase for access to features - specifically the "add by text" option - great feature, easy and intuitive to copy/paste a recipe and have it be parsed out into steps, doesn't require "AI" or anything to do either.. too bad it was moved behind an additional subscription after an update. Remember the dev commenting they wouldn't do that for people who bought the "one-time" purchase, but we just get a discount instead. Unfortunate since this was my go-to recommendation for recipe planning..
Needs improving
It’s a great app when it wants to work, a lot of the time the import recipe feature is totally nonsensical and pulls in stuff like photo captions or other non recipe information, the scaling feature also seems to not be accurate a lot of the time. Manually adding recipes is quite tedious on iPad, the scroll menus do not disappear after input and overall is a lot clunkier to use than iPhone. I also really dislike that I can only organise or tag recipes by editing them, being able to move and organise recipes from the list seems like such a basic no brainer and I really can’t understand the logic behind their design here. There’s also no way to rate the recipes, perhaps you could use tags but this isn’t exactly ideal. Improvements are needed both in UI design and the functionality. I hope to see them seeing as you’re more or less forced to buy premium to actually see the full functionality of the app. A shame that the subscription is also forced for full features and not included in the one time purchase, greed and lack of product to back it up really is a hell of a duo.
If Apple Made a Recipe App!
The smoothest and most well thought out recipe app by far. Extremely user-friendly, customizable, and doesn’t have the usual BS/bloat features that other apps have. It’s exactly what you want when looking for a way to organize and share your recipes. I’ll be a user for life 👏
Unable to do basic functions without paying.

Closest to an Apple Recipe App you can get
Design language is very similar to Apple’s, it’s intuitive, you can scale recipes, easily convert between imperial & metric, easily manage multiple timers in app and import recipes super easily from websites and other sources. The one-time purchase is definitely worth it. There is a subscription service for their AI features but you can easily turn all of that stuff off in settings if you want it hidden away. My only real complaint is how the groceries system works. The lack of integration with Apple’s new groceries feature is annoying for me. I use the new feature all the time as it sorts things automatically and is better integrated in Apple’s ecosystem, but I cannot add to the Apple’s groceries list inside the app. I don’t know if this is something that is possible for Crouton to do, but if it is I would like to see it implemented. If Crouton cannot add groceries to Apple’s groceries list, than I would like to see similar functionality in Crouton.
Arabic is needed
Switching keyboard to other languages such as Arabic in the recipe title is very important. I suggest reenabling it otherwise I am using copy and paste or switching to Arabic through voice dictation.
Good app...but
I am enjoying this app, but I cnnot get it to synch across devices and the Household feature does not seem to work - can't quite figure out what its supposed to do anyway tbh. Use it on my Mac primarily, but would really love to have it share my weekly menu and shopping list on my iphone too. Says it is synching but I can't figure out how to make it work across devices at all.
