Missing 1 Key Feature
The basis of this app is amazing, I use it everyday to study multiple subjects. However the search feature is only basic. For example when searching my tagged highlights I would like it to show me only highlights that have #tag1 AND #tag2; instead what you get in the results is highlights that have #tag1 OR #tag2, which makes locating what I want more difficult than it could be because I have a lot of tags for different subjects and documents. The implementation of a sophisticated advanced search would make this app 5 stars for me.

My MacBook & iPad, though fairly new, have give me nonstop issues ever since getting them & I am so sick & tired of it, so I have switched to using a Microsoft Surface Pro instead. I have invested a lot of money into MarginNote though & would be the happiest person alive if you made MarginNote compatible with Windows. Please please please consider!!!!!

Not convinced
In concept, this is an amazing app. But in the 3 days I’ve tried to use it has crashed multiple times. It can’t handle epubs very well. It can’t bold the text so it’s hard to read. Written annotations don’t show up in line, you get a box where your writing should show up. Even the *most* basic and clearly written text cannot be OCR’ed successfully. I could figure out how to activate Apple’s OCR in the app (and that might not apply to hand written notes). I think that some part of this app should be open source so that there is always a clear way to know your notes are not trapped in a proprietary format/system. The PDF export isn’t perfect.

iPhone好久上4？
OCR left me speechless
Every few months I always come back to this app because it’s such a neat idea. But for some reason I can literally never make it work in practice. Right now I have to go through several giant big PDFs for studying, and so I wanted to use this app to accomplish that and signed up for the OCR function. To my dismay, I have discovered that this feature is beyond unusable. Skips over / doesn’t recognize 2/3 of the words I am trying to highlight on one line, jumps three lines down to the middle and then highlights through the rest of that line. And then even the pieces of text it recognized, I get wild nonsensical strings of text that resemble an alien attempting to mimic English. maybe the PDFs I am trying to work with just have some mysterious property that baffles computers, I have no idea. but I do have some other much simpler OCR text snipping apps on my computer that are usually able to recognize the text successfully. So I am bummed and because I wish this app could be my go to. Best app for study and review, however…
I recently experienced frequent forced termination, which means the app suddenly quits without warning. There was one instance where I lost all my data in the file that I was editing before the sudden quitting. It seems that there are bugs in the app. Hopefully this issue could be fixed soon.
Mindmap Handwriting?
Why is the handwriting option in the mindmap overview gone? Without it, the experience is only half as good as it used to be. Any plans to revive it?

By far the best study app, and it's not even close
After going through a ton of apps I was seriously thinking of returning the IPad before I found this app. Forget woodnotes or notability, if you need a good app for note taking, annotation and studying, this is it! Edit: this seems to be essentially abandonware so 1 star off. If devs continue To be dead I’d say avoid this
No way to contact the developer
Since on iPhone pro max, the two sides on screen is not full and feel like waste of the screen space. tried to contact developers, no response! So I will put a review here, but willing to buy new version but hate to be neglected!
it is good but missing some important feature
i enjoyed using marginnote if i only use it solely, but marginnote is not a whole knowledge base system. If they still plan to develop marginnote as it is, they should really be catching up with the linkage functions to other knowledge base apps, such as Notion, or Zotera for research, otherwise the back and forth switching experience between apps is just annoying, and I just keep forgetting about using Marginnote at all in the end.
Don’t buy it
you buy version 3 and after one year they release version 4 where you upgrade for free thanks . Iwas wrong first time think i must buy for second time thanks developers

A little difficult to get used to. But, I managed.
Customer support is a joke & common issues with the app go unaddressed
The English website has practically been abandoned and users with syncing issues, OCR issues, etc. get the same copy-paste, lacklustre responses. Really unfortunate considering there’s no alternative app this efficient but it suffers from issues they don’t seem to care about addressing. If you primarily consume content in a Latin script based language, you usually won’t have any problems, but Japanese language OCR support and character recognition is garbage despite having to pay.
No Windows or Browser options
In my household we have PC’s, iPad and iPhones. It’s too bad there’s no options (app or browser app) that will work with my PC’s. I’m not buying a mac just for this app.
So far, so powerful
I can’t believe a tool like this exists. If only it’d existed back in grad school. Oh, well! I have it now, and it’s affordable, complex, but oh-so-simple to use (in my opinion, I see other users have had trouble, so maybe a more thorough and user-friendly tutorial?). I was considering LiquidText, but no offense to the developers, this is the app to use for all things studying and annotating long texts.

Great tool but can be better
This is a great tool to help in study, I really hope the text-box function in the Annotation mode can have better option for adjusting the text font size and color, especially in the Dark Mode. The present text-box font size is too big for added annotation besides the PDF document, and there is no color option either. Also the Dark Mode can use some improvements for the pictures colours, the colours seem off when we choose to work on Dark Mode. Hope we get some updates on these issues soon, thanks.
Excellent idea - with much more left for being good.
iCloud Sync is horrific and it's been like this for many years. Nothing has changed and upgrades are non-existent. There are many reasons this application should be your go to document reader. The solution for reading, note taking and possibly having mind maps or flash cards across many documents and connecting them all into one document is good. The reason I did not give this app five star: iCloud sync is problematic. I have multiple devices and sometimes certain documents just wont sync across devices, they just get deleted on the iCloud folder but remain locally on one device (the one that tries to sync it to iCloud.) Sync across devices is critical. Best practices for highlighting as a way for note taking, mind mapping and connecting document notes and ultimately sharing is too difficult to figure out.
Please add Dropbox Integration
This a great tool for learning and organizing information. My main deterrent for using it regularly is the lack of Dropbox or google drive integration. With this feature, I would gladly give it 5 stars.

Unless you pay the monthly subscription this is completely useless. It might be useless even with the subscription, I can't speak to that.
Some of the keyboard hot keys doesn’t work
For example, click the touchpad with 2 fingers(should work as right click) now is altered with touching with 1 finger. I can’t use esc (in my settings as the global button) to escape from a writing task. Hope to include more of these Magic Keyboard functions to make your product more magic xd.
Great app but terrible iCloud syncing
This is an almost unique app that’s very good at working with several PDFs simultaneously . . . But its iCloud syncing is among the worst out there. On the Mac OR the iPad, everything’s fine, but woe betide you if you try to use both. PDFs sometimes show up, usually they don’t. It’s random and aggravating. The forums are filled with complaints about the wonky syncing—for years now. Fixes are promised but do not happen. There is no support to be had because there’s nothing that can be done. Leaving feedback for the devs results only in boilerplate replies. As I said, if you want to work with multiple PDFs on either a Mac OR an iPad, it’s really stable and I’d recommend it, but it’s highly unreliable if you need to switch back and forth. I’ve just given up on a fix ever coming.
why i have to purchase again and gain
It's a really good app, but i have to purchase again and again. My first purchase was at the beginning of Sept, then at Sept 20th the app told me that if I want to continue using it i have to purchase, i purchased again, and today (Oct 31) the app said i have to purchase it.
The Real Champion of Interactive Research, Study, Learning
The are three apps in this arena: 🏆Margin Note 3 (The Champion) the only one that can TIMESTAMP VIDEOS!!! I pay for the super affordable yearly OCR, it saves my butt when I run into these weird pdfs that for whatever reason, you cannot highlight or copy text from it.. I run into this A LOT with research PDFs and older Books made into PDFs. The fact that you can import a video and then make mind maps from particular sections of the video and whenever you tap on the mind map, it takes you directly to that part of the video… this is chef’s kiss🧑🍳💋 Every feature is so perfect for me, I can go on & on with the perfection that is margin note 3. Instead I’ll focus on it’s shortcomings that I have noticed: 1. When searching keywords in a document or multiple documents, you cannot type in the date. For example I can only search: bone degeneration But say I wanted to search for bone degeneration on a particular date? Say in 2015, unfortunately, I cannot type in: Bone Degeneration, 2015 (nothing comes up) so this means… I have to ‘manually search through every bone degeneration document that appears and locate the 2015 ones. EXTREMELY time consuming if you have 1000’s of documents. 2. Should have auto dark mode that follows iPad / iPhone system settings. Mine are set during they time, it’s in light mode and at night everything goes into dark mode. Because Margin Note 3 does not offer this, I have to ‘manually’ change it all the time. 3. When using margin note 3 in dark mode, it MESSES up any images in color you may have, they end up looking like x-rays, so if I’m studying art, anatomy, architecture or anything with colorful images.. well, you can’t see that image b any more, it turns into an xray. 🥈Liquid Text (2nd Place) —> Recently as of 2023 - 2024, has had a major resurgence, their YouTube channel is SUPER active…. They are showing a lot of lawyers & students using their product in ‘Real Life Use Cases’ and the lawyer showing you a case they worked on, and how they used liquid text used in the case (they literally pull out the document inside liquid text and breakdown all the uses they went through in real world cases, brilliant marketing and shows the power of the software, same with the student. That said.. as I watched these amazing videos, I noticed - they were copying Marginote 3 features - these are features they did not have before. I must admit, Liquid Text has an amazing UI & UX if you download their app, it gently teaches you how to use it, in a very intuitive way, mainly… Because Liquid Text does not drop everything it offers, on you… Rather, they copied game tutorial style, in the sense that… they will not teach you about a feature ‘unless you tap on the said feature’ this is when the person learns, because they are trying to use it. Why such a write up ✍️ from the second place contender? In hopes that Margin Note 3 learns from them, in the way Liquid Text copied from Margin Note 3, but in the following ways: 1. For Margin Note 4 - Simpler UX & Minimalistic UI 2. For Margin Note 4 - Learn from Liquid Text Tutorial, download their app, it’s free, see how they implemented that elegant Tutorial? make sure your next UX & UI hire, has a vision of a tutorial at that same level or better. 2. Wake you YouTube channel, it’s dead, show people using your app in real case scenarios 🥉Flexcil (3rd Place) —> Sadly compare to the above, this is inferior product. That said, I rather enjoyed it’s UX & UI (simple & minimalistic is key!) I say inferior compared to the above, that said this really is an excellent product and would had been number one, if the other two did not exist, what brings Flexcil low, is that they are settled on providing bare minimum features.
Not so user friendly and with features as other note taking apps
Other apps are far better in terms of user friendliness, features, automatic updates, and customer service.
Good app
I am still exploring its functions. Mindmap is useful. But I am not sure how does the card function works. If I only want to study details of a topic, I am not sure how I can put them in one card with this topic. Not everything has questions and answers, the font and back parts of the card feel useless.
No Dropbox integration?
It doesn’t appear to function with Dropbox, so I’m returning it.
Complex and hard to use with almost no documentation
This is not an easy to use or intuitive app. It appears very powerful, but it is very challenging to learn to use.

Pictures get inverted colors in Dark Mode
When I open a PDF in Dark Mode, the colors are inverted and the selector for "Color correction for pictures in Dark Mode" makes nothing.
Great app
Perfect app to study! Too bad that the app doesn’t work in a split view. I think there is a bug but when I put it in split view with another app, my apple pencil is shifted by like 3 inches.
Too much effort to learn with poor documentation
I got the app hoping this would be my go to app for study and note taking allowing me to link notes from different sources. It does that but because there is far too little user info from the developers. It takes more time than I am willing to invest to learn how to use it. I can easily take my notes in one of the many easy to use note apps available today and link them with hyperlinks for cross reference. If the MN3 developers would come out with a few good instructional videos and a digital user manual it would make things so much easier than digging in blindly to figure out how the app works.
Not intuitive
I have been trying the trial version for 3 days now and I still don’t know what I am doing. There are no instructions and the user is left fo fumble around. The intro videos are of limited use as they do not explain what they are doing and for what purpose. Eg. I have drawn a box around the text I am interested in and it shows in the side bar. I do that again for another paragraph and the same thing happens. However I cannot drag the second text box to make a mind map and I can’t find how to do that. All in all I am sure it is a good program if you are familiar with it but not if you are new to it. I thought it would be good for me to complement Liquidtext which I use and which has some limitations, but I do not have the time to fumble around with Margin Note 3. So it gets a 3 star for lack of purposeful instructions (or if there are, I have not been able to find them! Which is a design problem in itself!).
Really amazing tool for organizing thoughts
I use this app as a tool for studying leaning and analyzing the holy book and it works so well for this purpose. I love the features it has and it’s everything I was looking for but couldn’t find with other annotation apps. I paid for the full version which is so affordable and have no regrets.
Time to find a new app poor support with issue
Emailed support over 6mths ago and now I’m getting a 3rd email and no communication between them. 90% of the time when trying to move files into the folders I created it drops when trying to get to the folder. And after finally moving the files to folders it drops them back to the root folder. Moved the same books back and fourth for the last 30mins. Today is Sunday July 2nd…started at 11am it’s 11:40am. Sad because when the app works it’s great…..
Almost...perfect
This is my everyday app in my medical studies. It just fits my learning style, automatically creates maps with the excerpts of the concepts I highlight in the pdfs, allows for an unbelievably quick and precise text search on the imported pdfs and within the maps, and finally solved the sync problems among mac os and ios. What I don’t like is the lack of documentation, it’s almost learning by yourself despite the “tutorial” concept map they have, files and folder management lacks of structure and flexibility, but it does the job. The one thing that bothers me the most is the reduced color palette for excerpts, there is a full color pallette for fonts but not for excerpt boxes, why. Despite the limitations I just mentioned, the app is so powerful with excerpts creation and several review modes that I strongly recommend it, just take your time trying it and discovering its strengths and you’ll be well served. There is a memory (anki) card creation tool included but I rarely use it for lack of documentation.
Can’t change the template colour!!!
I want a black background. The fact that you can’t change the colour on the mind map is completely heartbreaking because this app looks so good. But it’s definitely a dealbreaker for me.
Continually crashes - update - sorted. Still no manual...
I’ve just upgraded from Marginnote Pro but on testing this new version it has crashed 4 times in the last 30mins. I’ll be asking for a refund and revert to the Pro version. PS There is a link to a user manual on the website but you just get a 404 error - not available. For an app this complex you need a manual.... Update: Fast developer response - thank you. Updated app and it has now worked flawlessly for 3hrs. Your users still urgently need a manual though as we can only use trial and error to see what the controls do. Up for 1 to 3 stars now. Awaiting further response concerning release of user manual. Five stars are waiting for you!
