Ulysses: Writing App reviews
4.5 out of 5, based on 5,778 reviews.
What people like
- Syncs perfectly across all your Apple devices
- Clean interface helps you focus on writing
- Great for organizing many books or projects
What they complain about
- You must pay to actually write anything
- Sync fails and you might lose work
- Markdown symbols are always visible and annoying
- Expensive yearly subscription for basic features
An excellent purchase
The app is perfect for anyone who loves to write. It is intuitive to use. But even better is the customer support, which assists you with even the smallest request.
Not free.
I just want a good school app something to record and write down the summary of eight days lessons because of how long some of these classes are. You can’t even use this without putting in a card for a seven day trial otherwise you can only look at like five documents of premade stuff. Completely useless unless you give them money.
It works at full capacity
So many great things
Subscription
Says no IAP but this typewriter is $40 a year. To me thats too damn expensive. If im going to pay for an app I’ll use scrivener or pages. I dont see why this costs what it does.
Only 3 stars
Ulysses is one of the most polished writing apps on macOS, yet it continues to use absolutely hideous, always-visible Markdown markup and refuses to give users the option to decide for themselves whether they want to see all those formatting symbols or not.
Big Fan
I really enjoy this app. I love the layout of it and I find it very supportive for me as a writer and someone with lots of ideas frequently. This app is helpful in having a space to express and organize them. I also really love that it can be in dark mode (night mode) with a dark background.
I'm not looking to buy anything
I got Ulysses because it had great reviews and I always struggle to keep writing my books. You would think I would actually be able to use the app once I download it at least some, because you don't have to actually buy the app, but once you download it you can't use it unless you buy it. I'm sure that once you buy it it can be a great help, but I'm not looking to buy anything, you know?
Nice software, but…
I do like Ulysses and think it’s a fine piece of software. However, I’m not keen on my writing being held hostage in a database should I ever cancel my sub. For that reason, I have actually cancelled my sub and switched to iA Writer, mainly because that app stores everything in easily readable plain text files. Whilst the Ulysses DB can be exported to plain text, it’s a bit fiddly, probably by design. There are some features missing in iA Writer like goal setting, but there are decent single payment apps that can plug that gap. Over the years, I also don’t think Ulysses has advanced enough to make the sub worthwhile. I get that they don’t want to bloat the software with pointless features, but given the app’s focus on creative writing, some proper development of story outlining tools might be helpful. So, not a terrible app by any means. I just think, for me, it’s outlived its usefulness.
Pretty but buggy and unreliable (and very expensive)
Update: 04/07/2026 Add iCloud sync to the list of things in Ulysses that have become unreliable. More and more poorly thought out features yet the basics are just never solid with this app. Update: 01/25/2022 Hard to believe, but there are even more bugs now than before. For example, if you put italics (using the "_" tag) between quotes (as one does for adding emphasis to dialog or quoting someone), Ulysses will stick a extra character at random that defeats the italics. These guys keep adding half-baked features but never seem to fix the bugs that make the software unreliable. Update: 09/15/2020 New versions of the app bring more and more bugs without fixing older ones. Ulysses will suddenly stop synching to iCloud with no alert, no means of finding the problem, and no solution to get it working again. The primary value of the app for me was automatic syncing across devices, but even that no longer works. Contacting the developers produces no useful result. Original review: Ulysses is subscription-based, expensive, and unreliable. The interface is clean and simple – which is a compelling feature in software that you expect to use every day – and the promise of automatic sync across devices is compelling. The problem is that there are bugs that just don't seem to get fixed (for example, if you try to re-order a sheet on the iPad version to the bottom of the list it won't work). Sounds like a simple issue to resolve, but it's been two versions at least that the developers have been aware of this and they haven't bothered to fix it. There are other bugs with features like the goal/history tracking of word counts and the inability to bring in anything written in Google Docs. More troubling is that sometimes sync doesn't work, which can result in losing a document you've just spent hours on. Support response has been hit or miss, usually resulting in someone telling you that they'll fix it one day or that any problems are the fault of either other software (such as Google Docs) or iCloud or the user themselves. All of this on an app that costs twice as much in one year as Scrivener – an app with vastly more capability – is for a permanent license. It's not all bad. As I mentioned at the top, the interface is clean and well-designed. If the codebase underneath was reliable, I'd be content with the high price tag and low feature set. As it is, I'm personally stuck with it for a while as I've got loads of material already in Ulysses, but for new users, I'd suggest avoiding the product until it's more stable.
Feature drift
Used to be great. It has drifted far from its original philosophy.
简洁好用
喜欢写小说,有时候也写些杂七杂八的文,页面简洁,专注码字,多本书目独立管理,很满意
Scam
It’s not free. You have to pay $40 a month to type. It’s not worth it
SiD
A great app. Pricey given other options out there but it has powerful features while remaining incredibly intuitive. Great for research, writing, organising and will quickly become the first app you fire up every day.
No sample without “free trial”. Plus bad grammar
I downloaded this to try it out. There is no trying it out without SIGNING UP for a free trial. I don’t do that. Second, this is a writing app, and the grammar in the “you must read this” section was atrocious. Like ESL bad. Too unprofessional for me to go any further. Deleted.
i want to love this app
i want to love this app - it is very simple. but honestly, the user interface lacks…nothing seems to be in a logical place. despite being so “simple”, the functions appear illogically laid out. i tried to get used to the app - i’ve written now 1 partial manuscript, have 2 other ones, and now a 4th that has the complete draft. i wouldn’t say it’s horrible but just one up from that. the concept is great though. today my struggle is scoping a search to -not a sheet- a group - there is a pulldown menu AND an icon, but the search only scopes to the current sheet - and no - i am not confusing the two…this is basic stuff that should work.
Best Ever
I use this App everyday and for just about everything!
Price…
It is so EXPENSIVE as a word app
Great but one thing
I’m on my 4th full length novel. The latest version is fixing what wasn’t broken. Naming a sheet And starting the next adds more unnecessary steps.
Used to be Good
The new updates add bloat, not much useful additional functionality, and seem to reverse some earlier good things. It’s still ok, but other apps now look more appealing for serious writing needs, especially for the annual costs involved.
It’s not a word processor, and in the end, that’s a problem
I have been using Ulysses for about 6-7 years. I have 3 books in print, not best sellers, but published professionally and sold internationally. Lately, Ulysses has been bugging me enormously because it’s essentially a Markdown XL application rather than a WYSIWYG word processor. The reason this is a problem is that when you are writing a long document, like a book, with lots of formatting requirements that are easier stay on top of as you are writing, rather than proofing it all at the end, the inability to switch to a WYSIWYG view becomes tiring and distracting. What do I mean by this? In Ulysses, every element of formatting requires a tag and tags are always visible. So if, for example, you italicise something, the italic format tag takes up a space in the text. There is no way to switch this off. You can hide the tags with a theme, but then you end up with lots of weird double spaces that - at least for me - are like a loose thread to a kitten. Those tags have to remain according to the developer, so I cannot ignore them and they bug me. Also, I sometimes fail to spot where format tags begin or end, which creates proofing issues later on when the text is exported. It’s not a problem for a 500 word essay but it becomes a royal pain when your word count is in the region of 200,000. My basic gripe is that having tags disrupt the text without being able to render them invisible, and retain normal spaces between words, is annoying. It’s like having Word’s hidden characters turned on, all the time. Seamless syncing across devices, and grouping your thoughts and ideas into sheets and folders is wonderful but less valuable now as I tend to write on the same laptop. Direct publishing to online services is probably great too, but I don’t use that feature. But first and foremost, this is a writing tool meant to free up and liberate the authorial mind and my experience is that Ulysses does not do this. Lately, I have taken to writing in OmmWriter and then pasting my new material back into Ulysses, but this is less convenient when, for example, I want to cross reference other material. It makes version tracking of sections of text more difficult. Before adopting Ulysses, I used Simplenote and I switched because I found that service did not sync reliably. I may revisit this choice after a long absence because I prefer using a lightweight editor to get the ideas down and I don’t want to get heavily vested in a complex piece of software like Scrivener.
End game for novelists
I think I have tried virtually every all-in-one writing app oriented at people who do big writing projects like books. Scrivener, Zettlr, Atlas, etc. Ulysses beats them all, for me. It is the perfect blend of feature-rich, well-designed UI, and minimalist, streamlined writing. Every time I think another app can do it better (or cheaper) than Ulysses, I find myself crawling back and falling in love with it all over again. Writing with it is just so smooth, I never have to think about saving or doing backups, and writing on mobile is just as delightful. No other app does exporting as easily or beautifully as Ulysses. There is a bit of a learning curve when you first use it, but once you get over that hump, it's all smooth sailing. I've been using it for almost three years now, and I plan to continue for the foreseeable future. I'll admit, I do wish there was a way to hide the markdown since I really don't like seeing it (or seeing the unsightly spaces when you use a theme that semi-hides it) but that's a very small gripe in the grand scheme of things. The pricing is also a bit steep, but again, there's just nothing else on the market like this, and the developers have done a very good job keeping it lightweight and polished for long-term use. The only thing that would make me seriously reconsider using it is if there was a subscription price increase. If you're reading this, Ulysses devs, thank you so much for the app. It's become a daily driver for me, and I would cry if it was discontinued at some point.
Needs mandatory subscription
Hell no
Learning Curve
One of Ulysses big selling point is keeping writer’s fingers on the keyboard, but there’s a bit of a learning curve to the markup system, and by time you research and learn how to use the software, you’ve already wasted time not writing. Other than that, it’s a fairly easy app, and the export option alone makes it worth learning.
A great experience for non-serious writers with money to burn
There are great things about this app. It is genuinely a joy to use but here are the things that hold it back from being a consideration for those serious about writing: - Impossible to effectively save or back up your projects. (projects being anything in the Ulysees project format) - Asks for an expensive subscription model without delivering anything worth subscribing to (no roadmap, no improvements, no attempt to improve on the basis of online feedback) - Mac/IOS only. Will only sync to iCloud in 2024?! - Several people online have lost weeks/months of work from poorly designed software updates In short, your projects are not saveable, they cannot be effectively backed up, and you will be locked into a subscription payments in order to access your work.
Confusing
In the interest of being clean and correct, it’s often confusing and inefficient.
Love it
I’ve used Ulysses for years and love its integration into apples products. It makes writing a joy and helps boost focus. It has everything built in you need to write your articles, books, blogs or anything else.
“Free” with in app purchases is misleading
Downloaded it assuming it was like most apps that are free but offer in app purchases. One normal practice is: basic usage of the app is there, but more advanced features have to be paid for. The name of this app includes “writing app” so you’d think that writing would be a basic feature and extra stuff is the paid stuff? nope. It’s “Read only” unless you pay. So instead of clicking on either the “Read only mode” button or the “back” button, I just hit Cmd+Q and then “Cmd+backspace” and confirmed that it was being moved to the trash with a double tap on my watch. if you’re fine with such a ridiculous limitation, then check it out, but don’t bother expecting any sort of chance to actually try the app out.
Beautiful and simple; sometimes too raw
I love the native-Apple feel of the Ulysses interface, the relatively simple but effective feature set, and the automatic sharing across devices. So far (after a year) my only complaint is that Markdown still feels clunky. Would prefer a more WYSIWYG editor.
Weired text behavior
I'm getting some weird behavior when I'm typing that's making Ulysses difficult to use. There's a couple of issues. When I'm typing in the middle of a sheet, the text below where I'm typing disappears. Another issue is when selecting text to delete or write over, it doesn't allow selecting the spaces between words. Then when you delete/type, not every character is deleted/typed over. Seems to happen sporadically. It never used to do these. Not huge issues but they break the workflow.
Not meant for iOS
Far inferior to the free Apple Notes app simply because this is not an app that was meant for iOS….its clunky, and if you want to just “write without distraction”, use the Apple journal app on iOS
The most useful app I’ve owned in decades
435,000 words and 5 books has given me a deep appreciation of the magic of Ulysses. I have been using word processing since 1979 (5 years before the mac was introduced). When I started writing novels I went on a hunt for a better tool. Using apps like Word or Pages were fine for a single chapter, but unwieldy as the manuscript grew. Then I switched to Scrivener. Much better and overall I was pretty happy with it except for one crucial thing: it’s poor sync across devices (I’m a 100% Apple person). The transition to Ulysses was a bit awkward, primarily because the developers take a different approach to writing management. It took a couple of weeks to get into the workflow approach that the program encourages. Over time, things smoothed out. What is extraordinary — and a total winner is the perfect sync across both my MacBooks, my iPad pro, and even my iPhone. Brilliant! The series of novel I worked on span a period of over a decade. With all five books inside Ulysses it was a breeze to move back and forth across all the manuscripts. I have always sought out the best tech for any kind of projects (and built several successful companies around that principle). When I hear other novelists talk about writing in Word I simply roll my eyes and know that I’m twice as efficient.
Performative subscription slop
genuinely why is there even a subscription to write when you can literally do it anywhere for free
I am grateful to have it on my desktop.
Ulysses has saved me from totally collapsing and losing all my scripts. It is not however quite as user friendly as I would like.
darkwest
I am using this to correct reams of text 25000 words long. My mac keeps jamming up in this program. Also controls are difficult to work, if they even working properly.
Amazing but not for uni
I got Ulysses to work on various projects this semester and I did truly love writing with it. It has great file organization, and it no-nonsense in terms of extra unneeded features on the main screen, but lets you format anyways. I also like that it has a similar typewriter feature as iAWriter (in the view menu at least on Mac). The main drawback is that this app is NOT designed for academic writing in my opinion. Even if you want to use zotero it requires setting up custom formats and then doing a convoluted export pathways with LaTeX and other software to add citations. I got the student pricing for 6 months but after that I don’t think I’ll be renewing, cause even though the writing experience is great, having to export to word and then add all the citations in after the fact is not ideal.
App So Good I Want to Work For Them
I love everything about this app. The only app I will write in. I love the UI and the features. Best purchase I ever made as a writer. Will subscribe year after year. Can’t wait to see what else they add to it.
Apple Notes Clone
This is basically an Apple Notes clone that you have to pay to use. The utter absurdity of this would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic.
Not easy to use and I did not find it had any thing that met my writing needs.
This is my least favourite writing app
ipad Air
Not great with the iPad Air and magical keyboard, somehow it just doesn’t work with this app. It doesn’t flow at all, it’s difficult to find basic stuff like changing the font, anytime you had hold or italic you have those markings which doesn’t allow you to see the formatting alone. If you try to change the markings style, the old format isn’t converted and you end up with lots of marks you have to remove manually. Nothing flows like it should, you end up deleting a whole paragrapher when trying to change a word. I had to google their shortcuts because they’re not accessible from the app (or I have not find them despite looking for it). Nothing is intuitive. I couldn’t find how to change the font on all pages, or how to consolidate only certain pages not the whole project. I often have to tap the screen rather than use the keyboard otherwise it doesn’t work well, it’s very very annoying. I can see why people would love it though, it’s not all bad, but not great for Ipad. Try it free for a week and see for yourself.
Not bad
Not bad
Used to really like this
I used to really like this app but the new liquid glass update looks terrible and feels awful to use. There's no good way to properly customize the look or the settings so that it doesn't take you back to the library page every single time and it's really solidifying my contemplating jumping ship as its about the only reason I was considering hanging on to apple
Great tool
Would get 5 stars if formatting options were more flexible
Good in Theory, Absurd Pricepoint - Forces Markdown Workflow (no Underline ability)
Hi there. Some general feedback after the free trial and then a nice surprise of $60 for this app so I figured I'd make a review: A) just discovered there's a student discount - would have been nice to know before I got charged the full amount (not exactly advertised. But I get it. Also annoying that you can't "switch" people over - I know what pro-rating means & you can definitely do it if you wanted to). B) Aware this has been asked a few times but I'm a new subscriber so I thought I'd try again as there's no direct help button in the app (another miss for me). Any way to access underlining? I like the layout otherwise for ease of use/freedom from distractions as I frantically throw my thought processes down on a page (Notes ain't cutting it for that!) However. $60 and not able to underline (even if it seems like it was an intentional design choice - Markdown) was not smart IMHO. I'm a grad student/coder and really love the combo of notes, Projects, and the ability to write code snippets, as well as insert imgs/vids/tables with ease - I have a travel blog (& several other sites) this would be amazing for building out the org structures for! But if I can't underline anything, my eyes go crazy looking for breaks in my titles & ideas that are often several pages long (it's just the way I like it, and if I'm paying for it, personally I think I should have that choice). (highlighting is hideous, sorry!) It's also the clear writing standard - if you're using headings and dense text, underline it. So while I like what you've done in theory, I'm sorry to say I won't be renewing. Too difficult to learn an entire new workflow/language that doesn't quite fit with my needs if it doesn't have basic editing (I would literally need to code it in, and that's not something I want to do when I'm jotting down notes/code anyway). Wish y'all the best; I think it's a good idea! But for the love of clear writing (my field/in the biz for 25 years), consider giving users the *option* to underline. Especially if you're asking that much after 7 days. I can’t learn the entire workflow in that amount of time before deciding to pay or not (while having a million other commitments IRL). All this to say, if it were free, perhaps I’d consider learning Markdown and switching from Notes to this - it’s definitely a step up. But not for $60/month. And I realize some people will be using this for other things - this is MY use case. Edit: Re Help: (Sorry - stand corrected - there’s a WEBSITE with FAQs - so you have to do a bunch of work yourself to get the answers - maybe - that you’re looking for. Otherwise you have to contact support & wait for an answer. Again not the best workflow for me). I maintain there’s no direct help search functionality in the app itself. When I search “underline” for example, it pulls up a bunch of general editing suggestions for Mac. If I search new Project, it points directly to the Menu bar where I can start one. Not the left-hand side bar, which is interesting as well.
Cheap, or a mistake?
I’m a legacy subscriber, so I carry on with the reduced subscription although I’m not blown away these days. However, I’ve tried downloading Ulysses for my daughter who wants to write and my ‘family’ don’t seem to be included in my subscription - that seems a bit cheap.
My Review of Ulysses
Ulysses is an amazing app and I use it every single day. I write thousands of stories and it keeps them all where they’re supposed to be! I really love using it.
This is horrible
Bro like I mean it’s free but you need a f- ing subscription to WRITE A SINGLE LETTER
Good but frustrating sometimes
I have used Ulysses a lot and appreciate it a great deal, so thank you developers. Just about to pay for another year. I would appreciate it a little more if 'select all' selected all and not part of the page, and I do not have to choose between good grammar and formatting (especially scripts) and footnotes - as replacing footnotes and reformatting scripts takes a lot of time.
Dishonest
I really loved this app. I bought a complete 'Lifetime' license. Then they switched to a subscription model and broke the agreement. They inrtoduced version numbers but lifetime IS lifetime. What really stings is that I told many of my professional colleague, even strangers about the app. Company with low ethics. Now with IA writer - a bit different but quite happy.
Format...later?
I've done my best to keep focus on the many pages of introduction. The gist I got is that I have to format everything later, as in the fonts and other stuff. Please tell me I'm wrong and there's another way, because I really don't want to go back to Google Docs, whose grammar check actually makes a sentence with proper grammar into something that makes me cringe to look at. I would not like to format later, and would instead wish to freely be able to format it as I go, as I find the whole finalizing process takes my laziness way to long to finish. If I am not wrong about this, please change it, or at least explain the steps that formatting my book would take. It even seems I cannot put it in italic or bold, and no, I would not like underscores by my italic. This sucks for me to use
