I rely on this app
I upload all my patterns to KnitCompanion. I used to use post-its on paper to keep track of my progress, but my post-its would lose their sticky and fall off, and I’ve knit and purchased so many patterns over the years, I’d need some big old binders to keep them all. I much prefer the app. I think it’s brilliant, and I happily pay the annual subscription for access to all the bells and whistles, which I use regularly.
Bait and switch
So sad about this app, I paid for the lifetime version, and now they’ve made enough changes where that version isn’t available anymore. I was able to creat charts and change colors of my markers, flip designs and merge them together. I loved it, until they got my payment for a lifetime, then they made all the features only available if you pay a yearly subscription. So my PAID subscription now I get the FREE version that everyone can get, so what did I pay for?? I understand it’s the way of the world to make money, but how many people did they lie to about the lifetime version? I wouldn’t pay for this app again even if it did my knitting for me, burn me once, shame on you…I’m not getting burned again.
Will be perfect with some minor adjustments
I absolutely love this app even though it’s not perfect yet. It’s absolutely worth using the paid version, that way it enables the developers to work on updates. I use it on my iPhone and iPad and the only problem I have had with the app is, too often when I move the line highlighter to the next line the page defaults back down to normal size. So I believe there needs to be some work on the zoom element so it will stay zoomed until the user pinches the screen out or double taps to return to normal screen view. Once the zoom issue is sorted I will be absolutely giving it 5 stars.
Womp womp
If you are a cross stitcher wanting to use this app to mark up your digital patterns, pass on this app. I can find no way to mark a single stitch. Groups of stitches- yes. Also, the app does not accurately identify symbols. I’ve spent hours researching and trying to get it to work properly. Support and tutorials are extremely lacking.
Not bad but could use some improvement
It’s nice but it’s not intuitive on how to reset the number on the side, or reset if you accidentally mark up the page. Except if I rotate it but then I think I loose all the marks I’ve made? Just some uxui/design stuff to hash out. Otherwise I am paying for the subscription so I’ll still use the app. & $30 a year isn’t bad.
Game changer!
This app has helped me be so much better organized and saved paper! I love it!
knitCompanion
I cannot get my patterns moved from the older app..to the newer app…I do not have Ravelry and only a few patterns were in Drop Box..they did move..all the others are just in the previous app on my previous Ipad.
Sharing
Love the app so far but it’s not sharing between iPhone and iPad..I have to open both to make sure they are both on the same page. Am I doing something wrong? I only have the free version but considering upgrading…
iCloud Sync Not Working
I can see the huge benefit of this app and have high hopes for it. But it doesn’t properly sync with iCloud and for that reason it’s not super useful for me. Especially when I switch devices. Hope they fix this problem in the future!
Pros and cons
Lots of great tools. A bit tedious to learn to use them all, and I forgotten by the time I start my next project. The one thing that really counts down in stars is that this does not sink between devices. Why oh why does it not sync between devices. That would be a game changer.
Game changer
I’ve been using knitCompanion for almost 3 years now, and knitting has never been as good as it is now. I can have multiple projects and work on whatever I want that date by picking up my knitCompanion and I know exactly where I am and what I need to do. I love it I wish we could just buy it once rather than one semi annual renewal. I think that’s a bit steep.
Awful UX
I found this one of the most complex apps I have ever encountered. There is nothing intuitive about it whatsoever. So many places to go and look for tutorials on their website but even there it's confusing. It should be renamed knit confusion.

Stopped syncing
I initially liked this app. It has a very nice appearance. Then, for some reason, it stopped syncing with iCloud, even though I had it set to sync with iCloud. I was in the process of knitting a shawl and lost track of the several rows I had knitted the day before. I had been using my iPhone to count the rows and had 20-something rows when I stopped for the day. When I went to a different location the next day and opened the app on my phone it said I had just 14 rows. I need an app that can maintain an accurate count and that can be used with both an iPhone and an iPad. Sadly, I will be deleting this app.
Scribble not working with Apple Pencil Pro
All is well except when using my Apple Pencil Pro in a new iPad mini, it does not bring up the scribble options like my Apple Pencil does on my older iPad Pro. Please update. Thanks
Easy to use but a few small bugs
I’m currently using KnitCompanion for the first time, to make an overlay mosaic afghan, and for the most part it’s great - much, much better than printing charts on paper. The Magic Marker feature that counts the stitches is the best…when it works. Sometimes the counts are missing or incorrect, so I have to do a quick check before I start each row to make sure. When that happens, deleting the Magic Markers and re-creating them sometimes fixes the issue, and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s still worth the subscription price, but would be nice if the counts were 100% accurate.
Awful UX design m, better options out there
The app feels clunky and unintuitive, and the overall UX design is honestly very outdated compared to what you’d expect from a paid tool today. Navigation isn’t smooth, and simple tasks take way more tapping and figuring out than they should. For something that’s positioned as a premium knitting companion tool, it feels like it hasn’t kept up with modern app standards. There are plenty of other knitting apps out there that are easier to use, more polished, and frankly, cost less. At this price point, I expected something much more streamlined and user-friendly. I wouldn’t recommend spending the money on this one when better options exist.
Apple Pencil?
Do you plan, as less elaborated knitting supportive programs already do, to include support for Apple Pencil to include scribbled notes into the text or the chart, above to the present highlighting feature? Whereas we like the Knit Companion so far, we miss that scribbling feature dearly. We might change our rating to (5) * * * * * once the program will support the use of pencil.
What Happened!?
I have been using knitCompanion for years and have really enjoyed it. However this new update doesn’t work right. I change colors for my row slider and it doesn’t stay. Once I leave the app (not close, just go to a different app) the colors change and doesn’t keep my current row highlighted.
Great but…
On the whole a great app and works well. I especially like the fact I can highlight where I am and use the vertical line to score through the column I’m not using. But since the last update I seem to have my project listed over 100 times, and none of them will open so I’ve had to print the pattern and try and figure out where I am as I can’t access my project anymore.
WOW!
I’m a fairly new crocheter. I was looking around for some good apps to mainly use as counters - I was using the files app to read my PDF, and an ancient row counting tool that just didn’t work too well on my iPad. I looked around the app store and everything is so outdated or just lacking any user friendly interface or real functionality. I started considering buying a mac so I could make my own app! (I’m a developer) So color me surprised when I found out about this app - it does everything all in one, and is pretty customizable! I’m able to easily track my stitch count, rounds, and have my PDF open for the pattern! Not to mention all the other features like leaving comments and being able to mark the page. I was fully prepared to build out my own custom tool, and I am so happy someone tech savvy who loves yarn arts did what I would have done! Great app.

Great But...
I love the app, you can connect to your raverly you can upload your own pdf from inside your files or iBooks. But you can’t upload a bunch of files at the same time sadly, it would be great if you could go into your iBooks or files or added storage device, select all the files you want to upload and just press upload, but maybe in the future
Great app, but….
I have been using knit companion paid version for many years and find it amazing! But when I wanted to renew my subscription this year, it was nowhere to be found under my app subscriptions. After contacting kc support as well as Apple several times, the only option they both came up with, is to resubscribe, which results in a hefty price increase of approximately 75%!!! As a loyal, long term customer, this is really disappointing….
Just ok without upgrades
Allows import of patterns from Ravelry, which is nice, but I need to be able to draw vertical lines to divide lace patterns to comport with stitch markers - or at least to see 10 cell increments - but it seems to allow neither. Not willing to subscribe for $30 yr. Deleted.
Best Knitting Helper
I just love how this program grows along with me. In the beginning I just used the counting features but now love being able to move the pattern instructions around so that I don’t have to keep flipping back and forth And when I work with charts I know right where I am. Fabulous program and I have so many beautiful hand knits to prove it. Sewdelighted
This Sucks
This is not intuitive at all. I have watched videos over and over and checked out the Knit Companion Ravelry group and googled. Every answer in Ravelry is that KC will “ open a ticket”. This is unacceptable. I would like to use magic markers feature to change colors in a chart. I am paying for the yearly subscription so this feature is in my plan. I have been trying to go this for several days to no avail. This is a WASTE OF MY MONEY.
Couldn’t cope without it!
I’ve been using knitCompanion for a long time! It has helped me try more complex knitting styles and learn things. Also I have a disability that impacts my memory so having this means I don’t have to find pieces of paper etc. Love it!
I used to like this app
I actually loved this app until recently when the app started closing for no reason. If I am in it then move to my browser or another app, then come back to this app, it is gone. I have to totally reopen it. It never did that before and just started. I contacted Help & Support and the person on the other end was a jerk, telling me that that’s what apps do is close when you are not using them. I have never had an app close on me just because I moved to another app on my desktop. I asked to speak to a supervisor and the person ghosted me. NOT happy at all. I have had the paid version of this app for years now and the Support used to be much more responsive than this. If this keeps up I might just cancel my subscription.
Keep updating please!
Great app! I’ve been paying for all the features and haven’t explored all of them just yet. Only complaint I have right now is that linking YouTube shorts doesn’t work on the app. I’ve commented on the designer’s video about this, but really they need to be viewable on the KC app. It makes it inconvenient when I have to go back and forth between YouTube and KC especially when I have to view the pattern and the video together while holding yarn and needles.

Does NOT sync across devices
I have a paid subscription to knit companion to try out all the functionality. Unfortunately this morning it proved to be an epic fail. It does not sync automatically across devices. I am very disappointed as I use a large iPad at home and a mini for my commute. This morning I was unable to track where I was in my pattern on my mini after using my big iPad last night so I had to find an alternate row counter so I could at least keep track of how much I had knitted on the train. Don’t get me wrong, the pattern was there, but non of my progress notes were. Not terribly helpful…
Double charged for subscription upgrade
I renewed my essentials subscription in December 2024 and paid $19.99. Today I decided to upgrade that subscription for $29.99 to Setup + Essentials and was charged for that in full without getting a refund for the $19.99 I paid last month. What's up with that?
Long time user and lover of kC!
This app is everything a knitter needs for pattern management and keeping ones place in a chart and/or pattern esp if you have many instructions to follow at one time. I’m dyslexic and can have trouble tracking a line across a row so this app is a god send. Yes it does take time to learn ALL the in and outs of the app but that’s only because it offers so much. I use this app everyday.
Don’t pay for full version if you want to keep using it!
Just paid for full version and now it won’t do anything at all! Won’t even let me change the page on my pattern and won’t let me close the App down and can’t even restart my computer. Also doesn’t synch up from computer to phone app, if you mark something on one it doesn’t show on the other so your progress can’t be tracked. But that was when it was actually working, now it’s not doing anything at all so guess that doesn’t matter anymore.
Best, but a pain still
The best knitting app ever, there simply is no competition. It has so many amazing features and tools. Unfortunately, the lack of competition also means the user interface is A REAL PAIN to use, especially if you don't set up new projects super often. The naming and organization of features simply boggles my mind on a regular basis. Some things you find in setup, like smart shaping counters. Linked counters, however, are found in the edit stage. And linked counters don’t link to your chart, only to their own little counter. It’s not intuitive and the documentation/instructions could be improved, but it’s still a Buy it now! for me. Couldn’t go without it :)
I Must have missed something
My patterns are all stored in Books on my iPhone - I can’t work out how to open them in Knit Companion. I could not access support or FAQ on the page I was stuck on. There was no option to go to a home page so I cancelled the free trial, sorry
Great - but overdue an update
Uses battery like it’s streaming or playing a video, etc. cannot be used Picture in Picture while watching something else. An update to fix both these things would be valuable. Very handy for row counts etc, suspect other apps may be easier on battery life.
Perfection
Before I found Knit Companion, I took pdfs of my patterns and marked them up on my iPad. I thought I was so smart. And I was. KC just happens to be genius. I was immediately addicted to how easy it was to use.
Fraud
The app once purchased is ONLY on that device, you have to purchase for each different device, for me that is not fair! You should be able to sync your app over different devices. The app itself is difficult to use unless you know what you are doing. There are lots of tutorial videos but hard to understand. I will stick with the other app I have been using for years. Thank you but no thanks.
My go to app
Lots of features I use and many more to learn. I feel the developers are trying for excellence and I hope to enjoy the journey with them. The only frustration so far is thumbnails are too small to quickly recognise what the pattern is so when browsing I have to open and see. Thanks for advice that it’s in the pipeline 👍so it’s a keeper 😊
Knit Companion
It looks as though it would really help me, especially the chart feture, but I cant figure out how to use it.
Helpful, but has issues
It’s not an easy or intuitive app to use, but once you get the hang of how to put charts and keys, written instructions etc into a project, it’s a very helpful tool to have. The ability to colour code odd/even rows, and reverse the colours so the background is coloured and the row to knit is clearly shown is really great. I don’t use the tools that auto-count various parts of charts much, so can’t comment on them. Being able to zoom into charts and set up multiple counters is great. The negatives: it’s very hard to learn to use, even with videos and advice, so don’t expect to be able to pick it up and use it immediately. It has a habit of utterly forgetting everything and taking repeated poking/restarting to find projects and pdfs again (I suspect an issue with the interface between the app and Dropbox, as my wifi is fine and no other apps have issues). It also absolutely drinks battery, so make sure you take a plug and cable with you if you want to use it. When titling pages in a pattern you can only use letters, no numbers or punctuation, which can be annoying too. And finally, the app owners can be stand-offish, especially when it comes to dealing with app issues or pricing. I originally bought this app when it was first released, at a cost of £14, with an agreement that all updates would be included. After two or three revisions and a new version of the app, I’m now having to pay £20 a year. This caused a lot of bad feeling with early adopters who bought and tested the app when it was way more expensive than most. To sum up, it’s helpful to have and I rather prefer to use it for projects than not, but it’s issues are obvious, very annoying, and don’t seem to ever be fixed. 6/10.

Love this app! It has everything and is easy to use. There’s a lot of things I will probably use as I do more complicated things but even for simple patterns it’s got all you need!
Very Useless
This is quite a useless app, at least if you use the free version. No crochet, tons of outbound links, seemingly no way to create patterns without paying. Don’t waste the space downloading this.

Has a lot of issues
No idea how to work the app as it doesn’t come with instructions and isn’t exactly user friendly. After watching tube videos I’m still in the dark about most of the functions but muddled through. I was working on a Cross stitch and recorded each stitch only to find all my work had been removed and not saved next time I loaded the app so had to work out where I was again. The tools for cross stitch also missed finding the same symbols so I had to go through and manually mark them. Lasted two days and removed the app and went back to paper charts. Certainly not worth £20 per year, rubbish app for cross stitching or diamond painting conversions.
Good but glitchy
The app is brilliant when it works. But every few weeks, it gets very glitchy and won’t do what I’m telling it to do. For example, I I got zoom in and the pattern jumps all over the place. A bit if work and this app would be 5 stars.
