I have been waiting for an NDI capable camera with a good UI and Apple image stabilization for YEARS. IT’s finally here and it blows away anything you have ever used. Professional easy of use and it performs well. The Tally lights and recording indicator are next level. Just a joy to work with. Get it.
Hard Pass
I had to download this because Atomos Ninja did away with their Atomos Ninja phone app and went to this. I’m not too sure why I have my speculation because they couldn’t get their app to work with the mic jack. But I have no idea anyway….. So I downloaded this app just to see if it actually worked and it did and then I noticed that it has a pretty good just in camera video as opposed to using Apple‘s default video However, there seems to be an issue. 1. Horizontal video, I started the video with the back camera and then I switched to the front camera and when I did that I was upside down on the screen and in the playback also audio was not synced with video. 2. Horizontal video I started the video with the front camera so it could see me then I switched it to the back camera then I switched it back to the front camera. When I started the video with the front camera so it could see me talking audio was good when I switched to the back camera the video feed looked good. Everything was right side up and then when I switched it back to the front camera, everything was still right side up, so that was good. However, upon playback video was synced with the front camera when started when I switched to the back camera, although everything was right side up when I was doing the video upon playback, everything was upside down when I switched back to the front camera to end of all audio was not synced anymore. 3. Vertical video no matter what camera you start with upon playback. A video is right side up unlike horizontal video playing back however, the audio sync is still an issue if you switch camera reviews and you come back you’ll notice your audio is no longer in sync with your mouth. I don’t know if this is normally how it’s supposed to be. Maybe you’re not supposed to switch the Camera views but I thought it was pretty cool because you can’t do that on my iPhone, but I’m more than likely be deleting the app because I don’t use the ninja phone. And there’s no sense I have in this takeoff space on my phone if I’m not gonna use it for normal videos
Great app, a few concerns about shotbox and image quality
App's been serving me pretty well, but something that slows me down a bit is the shotbox. When loading a preset saved in the shotbox, the settings aren't loaded correctly. I saved a preset that had a 1/48 shutter and an ISO of 34, but upon loading it is always set differently. Would be very glad to see this issue patched in a future update! I also want to ask if it's possible to add a feature that switches between iOS's global tone mapping on/off. I've used it before in an old camera app (that I can't remember...) and I think it would be a great addition for shooting in certain scenarios and gives more consistent looking visuals. Thanks for the great app, love it!

I do appreciate how this app supports syncing to my Atomos time code box! But I would love to see ProRes raw support (ISO and HDR). Also, I find the UI of this app bit clumsy and hard to use.
It’s awesome
As a musician who wants to produce content, Mavis Camera is seriously underrated. I love that I can use this app to take full advantage of the iPhones powerful camera and record 8 channels of lossless audio using my interface to completely capture my performance. Opening the multitrack files in Davinci for iPad is seamless. Even better, I can load the video file in Logic for Mac and it’s ready to go for a full professional mix down. Mavis Camera is a secret weapon for sure.

Hello, Team Mavis! I must say, this app is very well-thought out and packed to the gills with features — absolutely phenomenal. A true gift to indie filmmakers. And it’s FREE. 😮 As a creator, I cannot thank you enough. I do, however, have a feature request: I was wondering if you can add a feature in which gyroscopic data is added? It would be great for a post-production app like Gyroflow would be able to read the gyroscopic data, and use that to help correct rolling shutter. If you are able to do that … I would be in heaven. And I will gladly buy you coffee. Thank you!
Shady - asking me to pay for something I already paid for
I previously reviewed this because of audio issues, and the developer replied by telling me I could use Mavis Camera Classic. Well, before they updated my “classic” version to this, I did pay for the original app (which was the equivalent of classic). So now, I looked up Mavis Camera Classic in the App Store, and it says I have to pay for it again. I figured since I’ve already paid for it, I should be able to just download it. Some shady business practices. My previous review: Audio codec settings? I’m not a professional, but I wanted something more than just the built in camera for iPhone. It worked great until the last update. Now the videos recorded with Mavis cannot be heard when played on a typical PC Media Player. I either have to download special media players or convert my audio to AAC. I tried to see if there is a setting within the app that I can change where I can record without having to convert later but couldn’t find anything. Too bad, I really liked this app before.
Updated Review: most features have been added
Pro Res Support was added, thank you! However the option to record in ProRES 422 to an external SSD as Apple intended is still not a feature thus resulting in saving all the data to the local app folder or directly to your photo library which will fill up way to fast.
The best app
I really love it.
No Apple Log with iPhone 15 Pro and no external SSD
I’ve used Mavis for a while but am very disappointed to see that it does not support Apple Log on iPhone 15 pro. It also does not allow you to use an external SSD drive. Worst of all it does not allow you to record in ProRes on the iPhone 15 Pro as it did on the iPhone 14 Pro. Not really a fully functional pro app. The Blackmagic iPhone Camera app does all three.
Clean Output over USB C needed
Please give me the option to have a clean output over USB C. I didn’t see this anywhere as in option in the settings.

With the latest update, the app’s standout Opengate feature—essential for anamorphic users—has been removed, leaving little to distinguish it from competing options.

Long Time User
This app has always been one that I come back to, because to me, it just has a great “film look” without having to do much to achieve it. Be aware of your lighting and you are off to making movies.

I recorded 1 video that is 1 hour long 2 days ago and the app is STILL stuck on “saving to photos”. What is happening!!??
1 small thing
Loved the app before and still love the new version, but I don’t like the removal of the full frame mode that let me record using the full sensor. Other than that great app.
Needs work
The good: Tons of features. Focus peaking. Zebra stripes. False colors. Lots of controls for bitrate. Timecodes. Presets. Function buttons. Audio Levels. The bad: Doesn’t get updated often. No Dolby Vision (dealbreaker). Not a great UI. No gesture controls. No racking between focus or exposure. No quick way to switch between auto, spot and center for focus and exposure. No way to combine/split spots for focus and exposure. No Zebra stripes for under-exposure.
HDR doesn’t output an HDR file
HDR feature doesn’t work.

ProRes only on iPhone 13 Pro series at time of review
I purchased Mavis camera app on my new iPhone 14 Pro Max and haven’t see ProRes support! Because this app isn’t optimized for iPhone 14 series! April 2023 Update: This app continues to be no optimized for iPhone 14 series with restricted ProRes support to iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max!

Typically a great app, but a problem has gone unaddressed
Mavis is actually one of my favorite cinema camera apps, but since the last update 5 months ago, the bit-rate selection in the settings is broken. For example, if I were to select 100mbit with 4k UHD H.264, rather than the bit-rate actually recording at 100 mbps, it records at 56 mbps, and sometimes a smaller number. The same occurs with the other settings such as HD, where it will not even record 50 mbps. I know Mavis has recently made a partnership with Atmos recently, and hope with their new broadcast system, it will provide new spark to Mavis. Updates have dwindled, which is a shame, since it truly is an amazing app.
Almost perfect but ruined by 1 flaw
This app is the only app I found which allows me to have a greater control of the bitrate, resolution etc. however, for some reason I can’t zoom in with 4K 60fps selected! This alone makes this app useless. Please fix this!!!

Not great with iOS 16
I needed something with some control for a shoot I had over the weekend. Even when set on manual, the controls keep going back to default. This app was recommended by a friend who shoots with it regularly, but he has not upgraded to iOS 16 yet. Wasted my money for sure. Thankfully not an expensive app.
Professional functionality and full potential features.
I downloaded this 3 years ago on an iPhone 11 and was blown away. The features of this app exceed what I have ever experienced, and the functionality is well suited for professional A/V use. I was struck by the interface, which included a both a vectorscope and a waveform monitor. It was unexpected and slightly intimidating to have so many settings at hand all at once. Definitely has a learning curve, and the going over the manual is a must (but easily accessible thankfully). You can’t just bust this app out and start recording immediately; it’s not really suited for casual situations or the average user. The most you can do is go full auto, but you are really missing out on the outstanding capabilities your iPhone has. I appreciate the developers and team behind this because of this apps complexity.
ISO and Shutter Issue
When I’m trying to use a manual selection of ISO and shutter, it automatically adjusts to whatever it chooses. There’s no target or auto setting turned on. Started doing this since last update
So much potential!
The Mavis camera app has the potential to be the best on the market- but, unfortunately, the developer seems to have given up on updates and support. The spec sheet on shootmavis.com hasn’t been updated since the iPhone 11 and I’ve repeatedly sent a request for support because the focus and lighting “targets” become stuck on my iPhone 13 Pro and the only fix is to kill the app and restart it. I’ve paid for the full bundle and am using workarounds because I like the interface so much. PLEASE, Team Mavis, don’t lose interest in this potentially-fabulous product!
Support for synced separate audio makes Mavis the real Pro app
Mavis Pro is the one true “Pro” iOS filmmaking app. It matches Filmic Pro on all fronts: UI, quality, support for anamorphic lenses (like Moondog), and gimbals (like Zhiyun). But timecode support sets Mavis apart. I film with Mavis and record separate stereo audio with high-end mics using Apogee’s MetaRecorder app on another iPhone. Both apps can embed a synced timecode generated by an Ultrasync Blue. I then import Mavis video files and MetaRecorder audio files into FCPX and use the Synchronize Clips feature to get perfectly matched audio/video clips with one click. Works perfectly and saves so much time.
Shutter Angle Broken
I can't get the shutter to lock to 1/48 or 180 degrees. There are more issues, but this is big enough for a 1-star rating from me.

I’ve been trying to get this stupid app to lock at 180° angle and it keeps auto setting to whatever it wants. Ive adjusted the shutter settings and nothing makes sense. Super annoying! I’m be reached out to support and they don’t respond to anything. This was an attempt to find a replacement for Filmic Pro once they go subscription. This is not easier to use. It has potential… but it’s just not there with its finicky controls. Fix it guys! It’s a pain in the butt.

Mavis was ‘the other’ camera app that was serious specs and full featured. Hopefully they can grab market share now that the ‘Video App That Must Not Me Named’ has stuck it to its customer base. would love to see more development and hopefully never a subscription-only model.
Good app, HDR video not working on 12 pro max
In general you should already know whether you want this app as an alternative to Protake or filmic. My experience was good so I purchased, but then when I test the outputted video which was recorded with the hdr toggle on - it turns out to be 8bit sdr. Must be a developer error but it’s a deal-breaker for a supposedly pro app.

This app was abandoned for over a year. Developers not responding on website and Facebook to issues. Now, bam, an update which removed functionality and a "we've been working on another project". Nice. How about a post for all these people with issues?
Would like to be optimistic
Due to recent business changes around my go-to filmmaking app, I’m on the hunt for an alternative. I’ve driven Mavis around the block in the past but for me, there was no compelling reason to switch, especially since it appeared to be abandoned. Now there may be. So, four stars because the app hasn’t kept up with the hardware capability or with gimbal integration. But four stars because Mavis is an outstanding filmmaking app, right down to the details even in the current free version. Superior flexibility (e.g., no forced limits on shutter angle based on frame rate) to what I’m currently using. There are a couple of things I wish the app had, but the core functionality is solid. So, I’m watching to see if the app still has ongoing developer interest. If it does, then it absolutely has my interest as well.

Bought the In App purchases (full pack) and never received it. Never heard back from support so got a refund from Apple.
Good camera app (probably)
This app looks awesome. At a glance... unfortunately you can’t find out if you can shoot in flat or log or use an external microphone unless you buy the add-ons first (which are more expensive that FilmicPro so I presume it will. It would of course be nice to know this info before you spend money on the add-ons. I suspect this is why the app isn’t as popular as some others!! Amazing spectral analyser by the way!
