Love it
Really loving the app so far for both videos and photos, especially with an anamorphic lens and taking XPAN style shots . However I’m currently having an issue with the desqueezing on videos. When recording the desqueeze to the footage, it only gets it right about 25% of the time. I have to toggle back and forth between desqueeze or not and record multiple videos for it to work right.

I’ll get right to it: the results I’ve gotten with this app have been astonishing. I love exactly where this app is taking me. My only criticism is an inability to customize the UI so that things are easier to see and that settings are easier to find and to lock once I have Established them. I still haven’t been able to get the zebras to work, which is my only main criticism.

Fix the user experience
I love your app and love the simulations and how I have been able to record some great videos with it, but please improve your UX. Example, when I am on the film emulation screen, how do I go back to the camera view? There is no back arrow no indicator, nothing. Fix this please. It should be an easy fx.

Nice app, I like the quality of the photos and simulations. I think as the UI/UX is refined the access to shutter/focus/aperture will be easier. Thanks for the app!

Great App But Missing One Thing
I love this app. The color profiles are great, the level of control is insane, and it’s all super easy to understand. The ONLY thing it’s missing is that it can’t be opened via the Camera Control button, and that there’s no control to add it to the Control Center or Lock Screen, which means if you wanna open it quickly, it either needs to rest on your Home Screen, or you need to make a Siri Shortcut for it.

Great for LUTs, missing basic features
There’s no alternative if you want to use custom LUTs from non-iPhone color spaces like Fuji. However, it’s missing a lot of basic features. For example, there is no option to save photos only to my camera roll. To save to my camera roll, it also saves to the app storage, which is now taking up 13GB and there’s no way to bulk delete these photos either so I have delete one by one or uninstall and reinstall the app. The navigation is also tricky - multiple swipes and taps to simply change the focal length. Would be nice if we can customize the top bar. Lastly, it mutes all audio when entering the app which feels unnecessary.
Great
I’ve been using this for a bit now on subscription and really like it. I don’t think there is anything else like this that I’ve found on the App Store, film emulation but realistic and lot over the top. There are bugs here and there, more than I’d like to see, but definitely worth using and worth the subscription cost for me. I will say I am not a professional or anything, just enjoy this!

Almost there, Pearla!
You are like… 79% of the way there. The film emulation is dope. The open gate is dope. The LOG formats n LUTs??? Pitch black screen when using any LUT. UI? Rather annoying. Some sections you literally cannot get back to the camera from. When looking at photos/videos, you getting back to the page with them all on it takes a while. All that said. The film emulation section is cool. Most of the recipes aren’t really that great but the first two are so usable it almost makes up for it lol. Better UI. LUTs not creating pitch black screens & better UI makes this app better than most of these others.
So slow and buggy
Promising though not free if you want access to more features the app is almost impossible to use and doesn’t have the option to use the camera button on the phone. Very slow.
Buggy
I absolutely cannot get the animorphic part of this app to work correctly. No matter what setting I try , my footage doesn’t look correct . I even have to turn off “ record “ in the anamorphic section because it does this weird zoom in to the left . It seems if you close the app , all sorts of weird things happen , like lens choice disappearing. Or maybe just changing a setting messes everything up . Plus lack of user luts is a bummer . I really want to love this app , but I have already emailed them , messaged on Instagram , no response
Honest Take After Usage
For starters, 4K open gate is amazing, love it, Love the grain, love taking photos, The image quality you can get is amazing, i haven’t touched the base camera app for a while, however there are persistent issues i must point out. 1. Applying a Monitor LUT freezes the live preview 2. UI is nice but a bit impractical, the concept of swiping is cool but it would be easier to make a toggle option to use buttons instead, at times it seems like the swipe feature just decides to not work, maybe user error, but Id rather just have a button so i don’t miss a moment because I was changing my grain level. 3. I deeply hate having to scroll to enable auto features (white balance for example) it would be easier to make it a toggle option to “Auto”
Horrible UI design
very difficult to change settings, some config(like exposure)are unable to save. Tap the viewfinder and focus mode will change to manual forever(unless I switch it back), I means, seriously? Bad UI design, I’m confused by the way to switch between photo/video, when tapping the video bottom, what’s the photo/video capsule for? Why not just change to photo. The developer should pay me to use this app
Good, but (still) buggy
Updating my original review, the issues I was having have been fixed, which I have to give the creators credit for, but there’s some new little issues and some QOL features that seemingly disappeared with the new update. As others have mentioned, sometimes the exposure will automatically drop until you tap the screen or jiggle the EV slider back and forth. The other thing that’s really been bugging me is the removal of the “dark overlay” for different aspect ratios. I like to shoot in 4K open gate and compose for 16:9. In the previous version, the edges of the viewfinder would be darkened to help better visualize your 16:9 composition, but now all you get are the grid lines, which are so faint as to be basically invisible if you’re shooting outdoors. Also I’m pretty sure I used to be able to select an aspect ratio for my grid lines and have it be my default, but now if you pick say a 1:1 aspect ratio it’ll only show you those grid lines until you tap the grid lines icon again, then it defaults back to 16:9 and 1.77:1. If that didn’t use to be the case.. it should. Finally, and this is the biggest annoyance, I really don’t need the focus and exposure settings to switch from auto to manual if I just tap on the screen to select a different exposure area or to refocus the camera. I’m just tapping to help the camera focus, or to assist the auto exposure, but I still want the settings to stay on auto like they were. If the white balance and tint can understand this, I’m sure the exposure and focus can too. The UI could also use some work, especially when it comes to the settings. Having to swipe around the top is pretty confusing sometimes, I think having a side drawer would be so much handier. All that said, it’s a great app for what it does, I’ve tried so many others and I keep going back to it because the quality and features are that good. These are just wishlist items for me that would make it perfect.
Pretty misleading
Despite the app being free to download, it puts you through the setup, sets all permissions and signs you in, only to lock you behind a subscription plan where the only “free trial” is on the yearly plan, this is mentioned at the very bottom of the app description when i personally feel like it should be at the top. Prices arent too terrible, but for a camera app it should at most be a one time purchase. For those willing to subscribe, im sure the app is good and does exactly as it says, but for those expecting a free app offering this functionality you need to look elsewhere.
Concept is good but didn’t liked the interface
The ability to change film presets is really difficult. Also we can’t see the effects in real time. For a first time user this app is really complicated.

A Filmmaker’s Dream with a Few Hiccups
Pearla has quickly become my go-to for adding that authentic cinematic vibe to my videos. The open gate recording feature is a game-changer, letting me capture footage in a taller aspect ratio that feels truly professional. But what really sets it apart are the filmic emulations—they’re not just gimmicky filters; they’re thoughtfully crafted to mimic real film stocks, giving your shots depth and character. And the film grain? Oh man, it’s the best I’ve seen in any app. It adds that perfect organic texture without overpowering your footage—total magic! with 3 grain size settings and 3 grain strength settings, you can always get the perfect look. That said, it’s not perfect. The interface takes some getting used to; it’s packed with options that can overwhelm newbies at first. The subscription model stings a bit too—why not a one-time purchase option? And saving files? It’s needlessly convoluted, forcing extra steps that disrupt your workflow. Overall, if you’re into creative video editing and don’t mind the learning curve, Pearla’s worth it for those emulation and grain tools alone. Highly recommend for aspiring cinematographers! Slight update: when I originally downloaded this app I had access to 60 fps and 199 Mbps but now that I downloaded again for my new iPhone, those options have been removed and the Max options are 30 fps at 99 Mbps.
Promising but not easy to use and still lacking professional necessities
No manual focus adjustmetn during video recording renders this somewhat unusable for professional and calculated workflows.

I want to like this app so bad the UI has always been so over complicated and hard to use they really just need to hire a new company to redo the thing entirely instead of just tweaking it. when you go to your gallery the picture pops up as a full screen with the rest of your pictures below them to be scrolled through but there are no buttons at all to get out of this screen and go back to seeing them all in a grid. swiping up or down sometimes work to get you out of it to go back to the camera. you used to be able to see a preview of each film emulation filter but now you have to go to settings, click on the filter, go back to the camera to check it, then go back to the setting screen to change it again. instead of seeing them as you are changing them like any other camera app. I also cant figure out how to save the pictures or export at all because there are no settings or buttons in the gallery when viewing your images. You can just view them, but they are not showing up in my iphone gallery at all. I had “save photos to gallery” toggled off but now that I turned it on there is no way to save my previous pictures to my gallery unless I screenshot them. Overall very poor ui and frustrating experience

Very nice -Exposure Issues
I have been having a great experience overall with this app, my one gripe is the auto exposure seemingly gets stuck in this positive loop every so often and when i tap on the screen to try and readjust it i think i might just be making it worse. I’m not sure if there are any specific settings that i should be adjusting to fix this or if i can change it manually but other than that i have been loving the app thank you! edit: I am using an Iphone 16 pro max

Tons of Potential but UI is Horrible
I will start by saying that I did purchase the yearly subscription for this app. Everything that is included in this app is well worth the money and very well done, however, there is one major flaw, the UI. As a tech nerd, as someone who has ran a media business now for nine years, and if someone who is around various different types of technology each and every day, I struggle to even find my way around this app. I’m not sure if there are bugs still being worked out, but there are numerous times when the toggle to switch from video to photo mode is just gone and I literally cannot even use the app for what I need it for. Ever since upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the front camera is also completely broken on the app. Whenever you enter selfie mode, the video turns the entire selfie camera to landscape, however, not like you’re filming in landscape, like you rotated a vertical video into landscape, very frustrating and annoying. There is also very little intuitiveness when it comes to any sort of design help or accessibility, at times you can’t even figure out how to advance to the next screen because there are no buttons, everything is a slide over mentality, which is fine, but half the time it doesn’t work. In the end, definitely has a ton of potential and I really enjoy what it is, but they really need to work on a few things that I mentioned as it basically at least to me, makes the app completely unusable.
Great for Film Photography!
Love it! Discovered them via Insta sponsored post and have been using them for about 7 or so months now. Definitely gets my “film” photography fix. My only gripe is I wish they have some sort of a quick access toggle via the lock screen. I had to create shortcut for it to be able to launch it from my lock screen.
Not usable 14 pro max
Constant freezing and crashing since purchased a year ago (Gaslighting me into a support ticket won't fix your broken code. If your app can’t stay open on a fresh-out-the-box flagship without crashing, the issue isn't my 'technical cause' it's your development)
False colour for monitoring
I have been using black magic camera app for my Film making so far. And I recently came across Pearla. I really like the open gate and log recording. the only thing this app lack is false colour for monitoring. I am using false colour in the black magic app and record recording using pearla. As soon as we get false colour, this will be a complete app for Film making.
What Happened?
Loved this app earlier this year but one update moved the film emulation away from a live preview now there are no stocks to choose from? I find I need luck on my side to swipe back to the camera from the settings.
I’ve been looking for this
Makes no sense to bury some very important settings for the target audience of the app —like formats, compression, codecs and etc. Makes even less sense to bury the LUTs and film simulations even deeper. Not even a preview with some stock image so you have an idea of what to expect of the looks? Also, there’s a fine line between being minimalist and obtuse. Could it be the iOS 26 update? But there’s no way out of gallery view back to share the footage/photos. There’s no long press to share. Just now after googling was I able to go back from the media library to the camera. Minimalism is a fancy word for functional. As of right now, the app isn’t very functional. Lots of potential though. I’m hoping the navigation issue is due to the new iOS.

With all the other options on the App Store, a mandatory sub is wild. The app is cool and works as advertised, but it’s not different enough to warrant a recurring cost. If the dev adds a reasonable one-time buy, I’d probably come back.

Great app but.. no flip image when using an anamorphic lens!
Media Management/Storage
The media roll section is very lacking. First of all, saving out is counterintuitive. Most apps, no matter what, go into “select mode” when you press and hold an image. However, in this app I need to scroll all the way to the top to tap “select” if I want to export out, let’s say, my oldest photo. When you have 150+ photos, that’s a lot of scrolling to do. Or at least have the “select” button be persistent on the top of the scroll as you scroll throughz Second, you should be able to hold and drag to select images. It is very time-consuming to tap every single one of the photos. It is a must, as most apps do it everywhere in the ios ecosystem . Third, this would benefit greatly if it let you sync up with iCloud Drive, because the app itself can be a storage hog due to the file sizes. I would honestly prefer an option for the app not to keep images in the app’s own roll whenever I opt to save to the iPhone’s camera roll. That way, I don’t have the app taking up so much space. I’d rather the photos go directly and primarily to my camera roll. There has got to be a better and more efficient way to do that. The app takes too much storage due to the very unorthodox media management. Love the features, don’t mind paying for what it offers aestheticallyc but it has got to be updated in things that make it easier for users to do simple things
The new update
I really enjoyed this app before the new update as it allowed me to use their “Pearla-LOG” feature, especially since i have an iphone that doesn’t allow me to record in LOG. It was one of the MAIN reasons i purchased this app AND bought a subscription as well. Now after this update I’m unable to use this feature, as i’m still paying for the subscription as well.. i’m not sure if it’s just a hidden feature now or what is going on? i would appreciate any help that can be provided! thank you so much!

Was really excited to use it but I could not even login to the app using Apple ID, wonder when the bug would be fixed.
Zoom glitch

Used to be great
In May 2025, it was awesome. Was in the middle of a project when suddenly, on a shoot day, I just couldn’t use the features I needed and my media wouldn’t save to my photos app, which made this unusable when I actually needed it most. Didn’t have time to relearn it on the fly. Would pay for it again if you reverted the UX decisions that were recently implemented.
It has PROMISE.
I would subscribe to this app if it worked as intended. One of my LUTS keeps freezing the app when it doesn’t do it to other apps, and I can’t get it to take anamorphic stills even though I’ve pushed the monitor and record option. I really wanted to like it but for me I’m in the intrigued but not subscribing camp.
Best app for iPhone video
So far, super cool. And can’t wait for release of 3.1!! Pearla, soon to be the one that all others follow.
Unusable UX
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to navigate between settings or file history effectively. It’s frustrating enough that I am uninstalling it.
Improved UI and more intuitive in V3.01
Great app with improved UI and fantastic film emulations and looks. Occasionally still a bit buggy but V3.01 is a big step forward for this camera App The Film emulations are excellent and the ability to do open gate and log recordings is a huge plus.
Flawed & Buggy
This is a fantastic premise of an app, pushing the boundaries of iPhone photography and videography but is buggy to the point of being unusable. Every single time I’ve used this app, for photo or video, I have encountered serious bugs and crashes, I’ve lost multiple photos due to it crashing when it’s trying to save the image. Charging a subscription fee for an app that’s essentially still in beta is kind of weird. A one off payment to help support the developer would be more understandable.
Potential but lots to improve
Love the idea of open gate on an iPhone, not sure if there’s a system requirements for the app to film open gate but I have a 14 Pro Max and it was dropping frames drastically with H264 encoding at 23.976 with one of their film emulations. The image looks fun and promising! I could see myself getting used to it and loving it. Also the way the menu currently is structured is pretty confusing with having to scroll the top to see all the options. I really hope they figure out the user interface and the drop frames. Maybe the dropped frames are because I’m on an iPhone 14 Pro Max and maybe it’s flawless on a 16 Pro . But once it’s ironed out, I’m more than happy to pay a subscription fee to use the open gate and film emulation options. Keep going devs!
