My first one

I didn’t see any reheating instructions. Where would I look for that feature? I live alone and often times cook for 2 or 3 persons so i have leftovers.

Terrible app. Apparently an untested app.

I do not recommend this product based on the functional inconsistency of the app. if you appreciate poor performance and frustration, this device is for you. UPDATE: With the new updated app performance has improved dramatically.

Miserable app

Did the app work? Yes, that’s why it doesn’t have 1 star. But it was a maze of pop up adds, banners alerts and all kinda of nonsense just to turn on and use my sous vide. They literally forced me to pick a recipe to cook at first, so I “cooked” burgers. Eventually I fought through the junk and was able to set the temp on my machine but that really shouldn’t have taken 5-10 minutes after pairing

Super cumbersome

I know how to sous vide. I just want to set the temp and time. Everyone know how to sous vide - google and AI exist. With this I have to answer 99999 questions before I’m forced to make a choice which may not be exactly what I want. Not to mention give my email, sign in, etc. if it was simple I’d give five stars. But the hassle, oooof.

Updates are hidden

It’s time to update it says (often) so try to figure out where to find the update and meanwhile every page tries to sell you a subscription for $69 a year. There are many better sous vides out there. I’ve since bought anova and so much simpler to operate, very straightforward and if you dont have your phone handy you can do the A from the screen on the sous vide itself. Joule has since updated things w Breville, on Beta testing now, and it is supposed to be much improved. Also Joule has a very good customer service w prompt responses w live people. That is important to me

This is the old app. Get Breville+

Update: the company released a new app under a different name, abandoning development of this joule app. The improved software lives under the name Breville+. Get that app instead. — The hardware is simple and effective. My only complaint is that it wasn’t designed with any temp display or adjustment buttons, so is entirely dependent on being programmed via the app, joule, which is utterly abysmal. It doesn’t find and reconnect to the hardware after app switching or going too far away for bluetooth. You have to kill and restart the app to get it to reconnect/sync to get the current status or make changes to temp/time. There’s virtually no software bug maintenance / support going on; as of this writing the app hasn’t been updated in over TWO YEARS.

Great app.. Once..

Once upon a time there was an amazing product called Joule! It had an app working with it which made sense! Then one day, the app went gray and dull… A new app was coming, they announced! Oh joy! A year went by and still no new app for the people of distant kingdoms.. What may become of my amazing little gadget?

Nothing but frustration lately

We used to love using our Joule Sous Vide but lately it’s so frustrating to get connected to the device. I’ve uninstalled the app and reinstalled and I still have to kill the app every time I want to do the next step. I end up killing the app like 5 times just to start the device and to stop it. The app needs work

Half the time it won’t connect to the device. It’s extremely frustrating because its the only way to control the temp and cooking time. I like the circulator, and use it a lot. I really dislike the app. Even after the firmware update the app has connection issues. I would have given the app 2 stars, but the circulator does a good job when it connects, so 3. They really need to work on the connectivity between the app and the hardware it controls.

Really bad connection between app and device

I have had a Joule device and app for many years. Every time I turn it on its guess work whether it will connect properly or not. I’ll be standing right in front of the device so both internet and Bluetooth connections are available and it will spin forever and time out not being able to connect. After a couple of tries sometimes it will connect. Sometimes when it is to turn it off I’ll give up and simply pull the plug. But that inevitably causes problems the next time I start it. I’ve got lots of internet connected devices. Generally they will respond in under a second. Whoever wrote this app and created the device doesn’t know what they are doing. If I had to buy another one again I wouldn’t get this one.

Terrible App

I love sous vide cooking but this app really temps me to toss this appliance and get a non-app dependent machine. While I have no problem initially connecting, setting the time and turning off the machine after cooking is complete is awful. I have to code and restart the app multiple times, it gives multiple errors (all the while saying it’s successfully connected to the appliance) and takes at least 5 minutes of back and forth to just turn off. Typically I get annoyed and just unplug the unit, however if I do that, then I get and ERROR the next time I open the app to use it. It would be great if it worked, but it’s been two years and I don’t see that in the future.

5 stars for device, 4 for app

Pros: -Moron-resistant setup (no such thing as ‘idiot proof’!). -Device itself is probably the best sous vide immersion circulator on the market. -Videos showing how the food will turn out at a given temp/time combo are very useful. -Extremely easy to just get on and cook. -Some regionalisation in the recipes e.g. UK-specific foods. Cons: -No display on device - must be done through app. It’d be nice to be able to glance over it to check everything’s OK. -Takes 20-30 seconds to connect every time you want to check up on your food (see above). -OK ChefSteps, I’ve seen the latest ‘What’s New’ and read the ‘Safety Information’. STOP CONTINUALLY PROMPTING ME!! Please add a “I’ve read it” tick box. -More recipes please. Especially long, slow all day ones. -The Joule device is capable of maintaining temperature to within ~0.1 degree C. Why then do the recipes only generally go in increments of 5deg? Finer control would be nice. -No ability to modify cooking temps or times when using recipes. I mostly check what’s recommended from the recipe and then set something close manually.

Connectivity issues

When I bought my Joule and installed the app 4 years ago, it worked very well. Quickly and consistently connected to my device for remote operation. I could put my dinner in an ice bath, then start the cooking remotely from work! Excellent. Now, I don’t dare. It frequently won’t connect or connects, but fails to control my device. I’ve tried a system of my Joule, reconnecting to the Wi-Fi, reinstalling the app - no avail. The hardware itself still works very well, very well in fact, but I’m afraid the software is to blame. The last update says “We’re turning silver!” I’d agree and add that it probably needs to be considering Hospice at this point.

The software is unreliable and takes a long time to initiate.

The device is nicely designed - love the magnet and one button The software though is not reliable. Everytime you come back to the food while a cook is on it bugs out on you - has to reconnect and the the hotspots don’t respond. Set timer is lit up orange but no amount of pressing it causes a response. I’m constantly having stop the application and restart to get it to respond. Things that could take 30 secs take 5 mins or more

Frustrating app for a solid appliance

The app inserts itself into your cooking workflow with the promise of greater control and automation. But ultimately it creates more work for you. My main issue is the ability to simply turn it off. Yes, I set it for 24 hours, but I would like to stop it at 23 when I’m in the kitchen. The app? Unresponsive. I usually have to hard restart my phone to get it to stop. Disappointed

Come on Chefsteps

It does not make sense to me as a user of the original Joule, that I should get a gray icon. The UI inside the app is still orange. I see that you want to differentiate between the old and the new app version, but why should your already existing users suffer from this? I mean - either you should rebrand the whole app, or just make the Turbo version stand out in another way. Also, please make it possible to remove the commercial for the Turbo in the app. I live in the EU, and cannot purchase the Turbo = It should be possible for me to opt out of seeing that as the first thing.

App is PAINFUL to use

Ok, so I haven’t updated my joule in a while so maybe I’m partially responsible but wow. I had to restart the app about 6 times to actually get to a point where it informs me I need an update. No big deal. Update stalls. Restart the app again. Update is working. Tried to set the temp, app froze up, another restart. I finally get the temp set, water gets up to temp, tried to set a timer…. Would not happen. Tried to restart the app a few more times. Sous vide turns off at one point. Get it back on, a few more restarts to ensure it’s still cooking. tried to set a timer one more time and failed. I’ll just use the phone timer but jfc i hardly want to cook now. Fix this garbage app
